You are awesome! Im a 65 year old puerto rican grandma who makes all the traditional dishes that my kids and grandchildren enjoy! You are definitely true to our unique traditional cooking! My sofrito is exactly like yours! God bless you! Sigue adelante!
None of my Rican exes, brothers or dad ever cooked. I admire when PRican men cook. It's amazing because I never experienced it. That's why I like watching the videos.
+Carmen Nieves Awe thank you . I love to cook as well as do almost everything. You should never limit yourself to what you can do . Being a woman or man. Thank you once again for watching! Please visit our website www.thefreakinricanrestaurant.com
The Freakin Rican Restaurant Love this recipe. I make it every year for my family in the holidays and they love it. I wanna know how do you reheat the arroz con Gandules? I put in an aluminum pan after I cook it.
So nice to see the traditions being kept. Too many of the younger generations that weren't born on the island don't know how to make authentic Boricua food. Gracias for teaching them lol. Bendiciones.
+Jeannette Rodriguez Thank you for watching. Its a good feeling to do this and people actually watch it and give positive feedback. Thank you . I love you for following us. !
Jeannette Rodriguez I was not born on the island but my tia always taught me as a child and now I teach my half puertorican children the tradition like u said it should be kept 🙏😘
I'm in my 50's and my mother is the last of the Mohican's when it comes to the traditional foods. If my sister and I and maybe for a few of my cousin's don't pass it onward our traditional Puerto Rican foods die with us. It's so sad.
Hi. Just wanted you to know that I had this dish at a friends home who's Puerto Rican. His mom made the dish and it was fabulous. I've asked for the recipe for a couple of weeks and I never got it from her. Saw your video and made it exactly the way you did. Even down to the making a hill at the end. Let me just say that it was 50 times better then my friends Mom's dish. I made it for a Cleveland browns football party today and it was the hit of all the dishes. Thank you so much. Maybe you can help with the browns winning a game now.
I lived in Chicago right next to Puerto Ricans family they would make this dish every day I would beg for a bowl they used a sausage but I don’t know what kind I saw this recipe and it’s been like 50 yrs but I’m Ready to make it now
This recipe is PERFECT!! My boyfriend is Puerto Rican and he thought it was exquisite. A few recommendations for people like me who enjoy a good shortcut: Gandules - if you are using canned gandules, there's no need to heat them up beforehand or add extra water. Just pour one can in at the same time the chef in the video adds his gandules (including the water that's in the can) and you'll be fine. Sofrito - I used the pre-made tomato based sofrito by Goya and it turned out great. I also still added the tomato sauce as directed in this recipe. Banana leaves - I wasn't able to find these, and it came out just fine without
WARNING: If you use canned gandules and/or store-bought sofrito like I did, you will need to decrease the amount of salt you use! Thank you for posting this recipe!
This right here, this recipe, is the national championship food of Puerto Rico! Awesomeness! I rocked it perfectly the first time. Now I need some pernil and tostones and maduros and some beans and some pasteles............ ;) This rice is a meal all on its own and is fabulous. Thank you again and God bless.
It looks delicious!!! It’s best to wash rice. By washing the rice you’re actually removing excess starch and helps the grains remain separate. Let’s not waste the rice water! You can use the rice water on your face daily. Rice water has humectant properties, which could give it hydrating and plumping benefits. Que Viva Puerto Rico!!
You remind me of my nephew soo much. My type of channel. Love how relatable it is down to the broom resting by the window in back. Takes me back to my childhood in NYC 🗽 with mom, my titi and abuela. I’m going to use your tips to make my rice tomorrow for my friendsgiving luncheon at work, ty freakin Rican
Aww thats how you do it.. Feed his soul. Makes everyone happy when they smell or eat something with such wonderful memories.. Its just instantly takes you back to that time. Thank you so much for sharing!
I'm part Mexican & Idk if it is just older Mexicans don't like to share their recipes, but I found the same kind of behavior with PR women with their recipes also. I went shopping and I'm Puerto Rican but I never felt so happy shopping food that's on your recipes. My mom would be upset but truth is I just felt so happy my refrigerator is full of food I haven't made in a very long time with new ingredients thanks to you 😍💋
This is the ABSOLUTE best Arroz con gandules I have ever tasted. The only tip is to be careful with salt. I cut back on the added salt significantly and rinsed the olives and gandules. Thank you for the recipe.
If I'm not mistaken, he accidentally said one portion of salt in one part of the video, and another portion later in the video. I agree...it was too much salt (ask me how I know😅) I love this recipe, bit put the brakes on the salt. Thanks Freakin' Rican, for this recipe!
I made arroz con gandules for the first time using your recipe and it was a hit! Thank you for sharing and this will be my arroz con gandules recipe from now on. ❤
THANK YOU FOR THIS RECIPE!! I FOLLOWED THE RECIPE BUT OMITTED THE SALT PORK AND HAM AND IT CAM E OUT AMAZING. I MADE THE MISTAKE OF ADDING ONLY HALF A CUP OF WATER TO GANDULES BUT NO DAMAGE DONE. I SERVED THIS WITH A PERNIL AND MY DAUGHTER AND I LOVED IT. WE BOTH AGREED IT WAS THE BEST RICE I EVER MADE. I AM NOW COOKING LIKE A FREAKIN RICAN - BUEN PROVECHO!!

In the early 1990s, I went to school with a lady who made this dish for an eating meeting function. It was one of the best flavored rice dishes I had ever tasted. I spoke about this dish many times. No one I asked had an idea of the name, much less a recipe. I found your video (2017) and made it. Delicious! This was better than how I remembered the original tasting.
I followed your instruction on youtube my PR Arroz Con Gandules is ABSOLUTLEY FANTASTIC!! Thank you so much!! YOU ROCK MY FREAKIN PUERTO RICAN RICAN CHEF!!

Hi I’ve been watching your videos for the past 2 years!! I moved to TX from CT and they have zero Puerto Rican restaurants around here!! I finally got the confidence to make your sofrito recipe as well as arroz con gandules!!! I can literally cry right now, because the smells and flavors are exactly how my Abuela and Titi used to make it growing up..memories. Thankyou and God bless!
The way you describe the recipes makes it easier for me to make. I love Puerto Rican food and Italian food. Going to be learning from the best here. Stay blessed young man. From Riechell (NYC)
It’s my first time seeing your video and I love how friendly, passionate and knowledgeable you are in your instruction. I really learned and love to look at your videos. Thank you so much.

They're made the way I love. The way my best friend's abuela from P.R. used to make them. Wish you the very best and can't wait for the restaurant opening. Much love.
Since my father could not always find banana leaves, he would use half of a damp paper bag instead to cover the rice. Same concept just an easy solution when you are without. Thank you for the recipe, I look forward to making it myself.
+Odaris Brunk How are you ? Im glad you enjoyed the recipe. Yes we must be creative at times..lol My reason for the banana leaves is the rich flavor it gives the rice. I love you for watching. Thank You
Wow!! My mother use to make a mountain with the rice also, and I myself do the same thing. My mother passed away 30 years ago and you bring me so much good memories of how she use to cook. I love the way you cook. May God bless you today and alway.🙋🏻♀️🙏
I love watching your videos and I appreciate that you take your time and cook the old way--not with canned everything! Muchas gracias y dios te bendiga!

When my grandma used to call it salt poke 😂 on another note it’s amazing how other people tell you to use something different in your family recipe! FOH 😂 i love this channel and love watching you cook poppy keep up the good work tho you see Atlanta on my profile I’m from Brooklyn!!
Freaking Rican I want to thank you soooo much. for this years (2019) Thanksgiving meal, I made your version of arroz con gandules and pernil, and let me tell you it was amazing! Everyone kept coming back for more. This was my first time making these dishes and it made me feel wonderful. I could not stop talking about your channel and I reccomend them to watch and subscribe to my sister and friends.👏👏👍👍👍
My son addicted me to the pernil and arroz con gandules. I got a craving for it again a few days ago, and he said if I picked up the pork he would make it. But, I forgot it was coming up on Easter and he doesn't have time to make it now, so he sent me the link to your vids on the pernil and the rice. Going to season up the pork tomorrow morning, Saturday, before we leave for our DD's in NY, and roast it on Tuesday when I get back. I am a bit of pantry prepper, so when I realized Puerto Rican pork and rice was going to be a staple for us, I stocked up on everything I need to make it but the meat. The son works full time and goes to school on the the weekends, so I didn't want him to worry about having the money to buy the bits and pieces when I got the craving, lol.
I love how you really enjoy cooking and I know your food is delicious. I followed your recipe for sofrito and can't wait to try your arroz con gandules. It looks amazing! Also, I'm really enjoying your channel. Thank you!
Dude, omg! when you made that little mound with the rice it reminded me sooo much of the Moms, she always did that with her rice too, now you schooled me on the banana leaves with the rice, i bet the banana leaves be killin' the arroz con gandules with Sabor Mmmm! it looks good. I'm a try it your way the next time i make arroz con gandules. BORICUA SIEMPRE!!
Just discovered your channel and followed your directions for roast pork. My kitchen smells wonderful. My husband is from Puerto Rico and lives in Canada with me. My MIL taught me how to make rice and beans, same ingredients, except different method. I am enjoying your cooking technique for the Rice & Beans, however, I am using Pink Beans. I do not have banana leaves but will be searching for some soon. Looking forward to your next video. Sandie
I believe ya. I was looking up which nations ate the most fish a few days ago thinking it was Japan. You guys were #1 fish eaters worldwide. Japan came in 3rd.

I have been looking for an authentic arroz con gandules. Oh my!!'!!!!!!! This is it. I follow to a -T-, con a little less sal y muy buena!!! Perfecto! Gracias amigo.
Awesome recipe!! Just a heads up bro, get rid of that cutting board, it dulls your knife with every pass you make, that's why it looks like your knives struggle to cut through things. Wood or plastic...is the only way to go.
The Traveler That’s why you replace the cutting board very so often. The marble on is beautiful but it does mess up you knives. This recipe is AWESOME!
I teach new hires for the he company I work for & I fix this in the last day of class. I just finished my rice & it always comes out perfect. Can't wait till they taste is 12 he's from now. It's always a hit
+Maribel Torres How are you ? It really is slammin. Any and everyone you have over will fall in love and not stop talking about your cooking.. Let me know when you try it.. buen provecho. I love you for following!
Do you ever do the rice so you get the pegao on the bottom? My most like part!!! And you did eat one of the olives!!!! This makes me want to cook right now!!
Thank you for your posts. I no longer have my mommy around to ask for recipes and 'how tos'. I used your video for sofrito as a reference as I forgot some ingredients. And also, I see other videos of things I want to learn to make. Thank you thank you 🙏
I used about a 1/3 cup achiote oil that I made and I also added 1/2 tablespoon of tumeric powder and 1 packet of Goya Sazon/ azafran ( saffron)! Not sure if it’s the correct way but it has a great flavor and beautiful color without being crazy salty! :)
Awesome content!! Love love your videos!! Your not a pure Puerto Rican if you don't make the mountain! Go Mom!! Thanks you for creating such fabulous videos!! God bless you!! -Christine
Love, love that you use the plantain leaves over the rice! That's what I'm talking about - old school! Man, I could almost smell those leaves! Wonderful! Great and simple explanation and a pleasure to see your video. Thanks for uploading it!

This recipe is PERFECT!! My boyfriend is Puerto Rican and he thought it was exquisite. A few recommendations for people like me who enjoy a good shortcut:
Gandules - if you are using canned gandules, there's no need to heat them up beforehand or add extra water.

When you can't find banana leaves you can boil a green plantain in water and use it without the platano to cook the rice. My mom did that.
you can find it in the frozen section, especially in Asian store
Wow!! My mother use to make a mountain with the rice also, and I myself do the same thing.
My mother passed away 30 years ago and you bring me so much good memories of how she use to cook.
I love the way you cook.
May God bless you today and alway.🙋🏻♀️🙏
its good to know my rice is bangin cause i make it the same way, the only thing, i never tried frozen gandules. that may be my new way :) gracias

Sabrozo gracias por dejarnos mirar como ase er arroz con gandules
Freaking Rican I want to thank you soooo much. for this years (2019) Thanksgiving meal, I made your version of arroz con gandules and pernil, and let me tell you it was amazing! Everyone kept coming back for more. This was my first time making these dishes and it made me feel wonderful. I could not stop talking about your channel and I reccomend them to watch and subscribe to my sister and friends.👏👏👍👍👍
These are the 2 I plan to make as well
My son addicted me to the pernil and arroz con gandules.
Thank you!
Best arroz con gondules recipe on UA-cam!! Perfect texture and flavor
Dude, omg! when you made that little mound with the rice it reminded me sooo much of the Moms, she always did that with her rice too, now you schooled me on the banana leaves with the rice, i bet the banana leaves be killin' the arroz con gandules with Sabor Mmmm! it looks good. I'm a try it your way the next time i make arroz con gandules. BORICUA SIEMPRE!!
You are a tipical Puerto Rican cook,'i love it.
Omg delicioso!!! Thanks for sharing Freakin Rican!!
Lately I haven’t been too happy with my arroz con gandules, so I shall try this out!
Sandie
I made it and I give it 5 stars. Fluffy and so tasty. Thank you for sharing your video.
PR Rice is the best rice! And I speak with a level of authority as I'm Norwegian!
Norwegians eat fish. Nothing but fish. :(
LOL
😂😂😂
I love fish.
😂 have you tried to make it?
I believe ya. I was looking up which nations ate the most fish a few days ago thinking it was Japan. You guys were #1 fish eaters worldwide. Japan came in 3rd.
Thank you!! I see the banana leaf is the secret I been missing. I'm very grateful for your tips! God bless.

+Robin Wrice How are you ? Im glad you liked our recipe.. Yes it full of flavor.. Thank you for commenting and following us. We love you for that!
Love your channel in the future can you list the ingredients..
I love my rice but I've only ever made Mexican and Asian rice so now I gotta try something different which is why I'm here. Looks good.
Awesome recipe!! Just a heads up bro, get rid of that cutting board, it dulls your knife with every pass you make, that's why it looks like your knives struggle to cut through things. Wood or plastic...is the only way to go.
BUT, marble is easier to sterilize
The Traveler That’s why you replace the cutting board very so often. The marble on is beautiful but it does mess up you knives. This recipe is AWESOME!
Thank you for excellent work in cooking I like the way you explain. You are a wonderful cook
Tembleque next. Shout out from Brooklyn.
I teach new hires for the he company I work for & I fix this in the last day of class. I just finished my rice & it always comes out perfect. Can't wait till they taste is 12 he's from now. It's always a hit

I'm eating this now as I watch your video. I made it the other day. One of my favorites...
Do you ever do the rice so you get the pegao on the bottom? My most like part!!! And you did eat one of the olives!!!! This makes me want to cook right now!!

karla jetson the burnt part on the bottom of the pan.
Faith Derek oh yeah its good :) I love it
The pegao is the best part! My mom and I always split it.

Thank you for your posts. I no longer have my mommy around to ask for recipes and 'how tos'. I used your video for sofrito as a reference as I forgot some ingredients. And also, I see other videos of things I want to learn to make. Thank you thank you 🙏
Have you tried making it with achiote oil.
Thank you so much for sharing this viedo! 😊 I'm looking forward to more of your videos.
