  • Quake is a first person shooter that was released by id Software in 1996 and the first game in the popular Quake series of video games. In the game, players must find their way out of various maze-like, medieval environments while battling a variety of monsters using a wide array of guns.
    The successor to id's Doom series, Quake built upon the technology and gameplay of its predecessor in many ways. Unlike the Doom engine before it, the Quake engine offered full real-time 3D rendering and early support for 3D acceleration through OpenGL. After Doom helped popularize multiplayer deathmatches, Quake added various multiplayer options. Online multiplayer became increasingly common, with the QuakeWorld update and software such as QuakeSpy making the process of finding and playing against other competitors on the Internet far easier and more reliable. Various multiplayer mods were developed including Team Fortress and Capture the flag.
    The game received much acclaim on release and its commercial success led to several sequels, starting with Quake II, which abandoned the gothic stylings of the original for a science fiction theme. Because of this, Quake has since been recognized as one of the greatest achievements of the video game industry, influencing games that came after it, as well as the artforms of user mods and machinima.

    Rather funny that Quake's two most basic enemies (grunts and rotwheilers) are virtually the only ones you face in modern military FPSs.
    But Quake had many, many more.

    Quake 1 is my favourite in the series. I'm still disappointed that the sequels did not follow the Lovecraftian aesthetics but instead became one DOOM clone after another. I sincerely hope Quake 5 will go back to its gothic sadistic roots.

      Devil's Advocate Thank god Id is the one making that game. Bethesda fucks up alot but Id software has done nothing but improve since the 90s. Quake Champions looks good, and if Tom Willitz is half as good as Hugo Martin when it comes to game direction, it will be.

      Ben Bell I disagree. The music and game in general was very rushed. The only memeorable song was the title theme. The rest is just atomospheric stuff that drones on forever. If anything, I believe they're best game so far has been Doom 4. They've done nothing but improve since the 90s.

  • @gamersforge
    @gamersforge 10 років тому +51

    You missed the most important part of what quake really did.
    TeamFortress (TF), Capture the Flag (CTF) etc.
    Quake is the definition of FPS by itself, much more than DOOM - but what it did for the gaming industry is something so far reaching, few even grasp the concept.
    Not only did it spawn mods like the above, and multiplayer competition gaming as we know it (I ran the first official TF tournament and we had a prize pot of $10k! back in 1997! this was unheard of back then) -- but Quake brought gamers and enthusiasts into the fold of creating new content for the game with the blessing of the game developer (and we even got help from them via tools and modding support). This was completely unheard of before. People who tried to create new levels, mods, etc were often sued by the game developer before Quake.
    Can you name me a game today that is successful that doesnt have player-modding and/or content available for it?
    I know not one.
    In fact - most of the top games of the last 10 years are only the top games because of player-made content and mods. Half-Life? Was just another fancy new FPS without a player-made mod called counterstrike. The entire TES series? Without mods, good - with mods, legendary.
    Quake paved the way for player-built content, mods, and so on.
    Quake paved the way for multiplayer gaming, and e-sports as we know it.
    Quake is king, all hail the king.

      Actually, I think making maps and all was already possible with DOOM. Also, Half-Life was not "just another fancy new FPS". It was highly praised way before Counter-Strike.

    • @richardg5301
      @richardg5301 9 років тому

      gordonkris Half life definitely was not another shooter when it came out, it was considered revolutionary for the genre. I don't think counterstrike would be what it is today if valve hadn't seen the potential in it and picked it up for an official release. There were a lot more memorable mods that came out for Quake than Doom though.

    Fun and solid review! One thing you may have needed to mention is how Quake differentiates itself from other games by using the strategy where let enemies fight each-other. You mentioned the lack in ammo in nightmare, but at nightmare skill you often just need to run through a hall and let all hell break loose while you hide and avoid, and then just finish off the remaining, weakened enemies. I really love using that tactic and miss that in other games :-)

    I grew up with Doom and Quake 2, born '91, but for some reason we missed Quake 1. I just recently started playing it on Quakespasm with a controller and MY GAHD I love this game, maybe even more than Doom.
    Its got a lot of the same oldschool charm of Doom (to me anyways, gotta get the textures all pixel-ey.) but is so much more evolved. The verticality, that original id team finally getting to work with full 3d is something special. Not to mention the grittier, darker, grungier feel and all the lovecraftian elements. Trent kills it with the soundtrack. All in all, Quake (1) is truly something special.

    One thing I always found kinda funny with this game are that the flames from torches and even some of the muzzle flashes are actually models. Even today, I think most fire effects are just really fancy sprites (just doubled and tripled up a silly amount of times). gave you a thumbs up because it's my all time favourite game, but you haven't covered the multiplayer that was really strategic especially in a 1on1 deathmatch, there were really a lot of tricks, weapon and item domination, each sound you've made mattered, and so on... epic!

  • @alewis514
    @alewis514 10 років тому +4

    Most modern FPS games don't have level design as we know it at all! It's completely on-rails ride full of context action shit. And those expansions, you really can call them expansions, unlike today's DLC content. There's vast selection of custom made level packs - some of them could be called expansions on their own - like Nehahra or Warp Spasm. This game awards exploration, especially on high difficulty modes finding a secret with lots of health and ammo in it, this really does help the player, and after playing it 10 times over, I have no problems completing this on nightmare in 1 day.

  • @SeekerLancer
    @SeekerLancer 5 років тому

    Quake's expansions were the first time I think it was really worth it to pick up an id Software expansion, as their previous ones were often sort of afterthoughts. I count Spear of Destiny and Final Doom in there even though they had standalone executables. They always just followed the mantra of, "more but harder and not as good." The Quake Mission packs were definitely harder than the base game but they actually did things with the level design, weapons and enemies to make them stand out (I suspect a lot of that had to do with the ease of modding) and were well made enough to be worth playing through. I'm glad Quake's campaign gets more love these days, back in the day it was all about the multiplayer because people were kind of tired of the Doom formula, even though Quake's single player is fast and brutal with an incredible atmosphere that its sequels failed to emulate.

    I just want to say thank you for giving me the push I needed to finally play this. I'm a few years younger than you and my parents were really reluctant to buy games for me around the time that this came out. I owned Duke Nukem 3D Atomic edition but apart from that and occasional demo discs my FPS experience was very limited (didn't help that my brother and I were Blizzard nerds). I took it upon myself to really get in to Doom two years ago and have absolutely loved it but there was so much less to make me think of Quake. Brutal Doom prepared me for this gore-spraying masterpiece of a game and I'm already in love.

    When DOOM came out, it was ahead of it's time. Today if you look back on it, it seems very simplistic, but I remember first playing it and thinking "this is fucking awesome!"
    It was challenging, required you to use strategic attacks, and by the time you beat the game it left you thinking "damn it's over??? I wish it wasn't".
    I could say the same for Quake 1 and 2, it's one of those 'ahead of it's time' 90's games that is still a classic to date. Recently bought the PC version of Quake II, and it doesn't disappoint :)

    After over twenty years of playing through the campaign on normal, I've replayed the game on Nightmare. I found it... surprisingly easy.
    I am unsure if I just have godlike FPS skills due to growing up with them as my main genre in the 90s, but after breezing through my recent replay of Return to Castle Wolfenstein on the hardest difficulty, I'm now on a quest to play all the oldschool FPS games I can on their hardest modes, whether I've played the games before or not.

      I've played them all, even the HD versions.
      Though I'm intent now on playing all classic FPSes on their hardest difficulty. Will work my way through all the remaining Quakes (sans Champions) then hit up the Doom series. Serious Sam will probably be after that.

    Mate I was 14 when I bought this game. It traumatized me but couldn't put it down. Quake was my very first PC game. Fucken best memories. I remember when I bought Need for Speed Road & Track 1994, fuck , I thought it was the most realistic thing ever. Look at us now, we have Witcher, Crysis Series, we've come along way.

    I kind of expected more from Quake. But I remember being really dissapointed. It had zero interactivity (bullets did even leave marks on walls) and most of the levels were kind of the same without any objects in them. So I went back to playing Duke Nukem

    Beyond multiplayer, Quake 1 also has a very active single player community which produces single player maps of very high quality - almost all of them better than the originals. Last year there were even some mapping "competitions" (well, sort of) around some themes where people created some fantastic maps. Check Quaddicted, which acts as a single player quake map database and also provides the "Quake Injector", a custom map manager and downloader that takes data directly from Quaddicted's database. If you do that, make sure you use a modern source port like Quakespasm... or well, just use Quakespasm since that one seems to be the most compatible with all mods (Dark Places is also popular because of the effects, but several mods break on that because they rely on bugs that were fixed on DP).

    in some places like the regularly made walls (man made) look a lot like Quake 2 that it'd be hard to tell the difference between the two in a screen shot especially if the weapons weren't shown. The orge guy also seems to have a quake 2 counter part in the mini chainsaw gunner whom also has a great weapon and will strike with melee attacks when up close to the player.
    edit: I remember that you could look up and down but you had to put mouse look on one of the buttons or else you'd be stuck in a doom style look.

    (for perspective, I graduated from high school in 95) I played and enjoyed Doom before it, and had my first multiplayer FPS experience there, but Quake blew my mind. These were my personal FPS glory days, not because I was good or anything, but just because it was such a novel experience. Blasting some fast music and playing big DMs was gamer bliss. A bit later on, I also played the shit out of a mod called Future vs Fantasy. Class based team FPS... hmm, was it 20 years ahead of it's time or is Overwatch 20 behind?

    Quake I: too much to say. This was not only the first FPS i ever played, but could replay it every few years and not get bored. The soundtrack for starters, well i still havent heard one so good. Trent Reznor in his prime, the many other-wordly small sounds echoing here and there....the different a nd unique sounds even each level had all to its own.
    What A GAME!
    Then the game play is still one of the best, most interesting and coolest experiences. Only Half Life for me or Q2 is equal.
    Why companys cannot make games like this, i dont know. But im just glad Carmack and company did. Playing this game with my best friend in ‘97 was just so fun, as the game and its levels and enemies were so captivating that over the years we and i would play it again, and again.
    Best played btw with a joystick if you can hook that up, lol...then it really feels like your there shooting.

    I only played the shareware version when I was kid and so I decided to beat it now. I just did so last night and my only real complaint was the boss fights were too easy. Like the final boss basically consisted of just running down a hallway and walking through a teleporter. Other than that, the game was wayy better than I was expecting. The hype is definitely deserved with this game.

    If you're using one of the ports you have to turn off texture filtering (gl_texturemode GL_NEAREST_MIPMAP_LINEAR in the console), to get the beautiful pixelated look of the original release. Its graphics have a certain old-school charm, especially coupled with the atmospheric soundtrack and artwork. The game kind of feels like a fast-paced, action-oriented Thief: The Dark Project (my favourite game), thanks to the atmosphere and level design, but maybe that's just me. So glad I finally got around the playing this masterpiece.

    I play this remastered at times, and it is the best. You have to play it on 2nd highest difficulty at least for the experience.
    It is fucking hard, and it is a very good game to test your wits. One time I was against a horde of shambler, fiends, ogres, vore and a few others with onyl shotgun ammo, got them to monster in fight each other.
    I wish there were more games like this out there. Some variation in levels, new enemies, and ka boom, instant success.

    About one of the two most important aspects, i.e. its amazingly fast & playable multiplayer mode, there's one single sentence in the review...
    And about the other, i.e. being the first truly playable 6-degrees-of-freedom action shooter: none.
