I love how the game is balanced to encourage using all your guns by interesting enemy behaviors. Like the rocket launcher would obviously be bad against the Fiend an enemy that jumps in your face but the Double barrel is perfect, zombies can only be permanently killed by gibbing which encourages explosives, The nail gun for evasive flying enemies etc. I know this isn’t anything unique to Quake but I think the weapon and enemy balance they have is why the gameplay is so addictive and pitch perfect to me

    • @nitramdh

Most of the weapons in todays fps are Hitscans, you just pick the one that have a decent spray pattern. On Quake you swap guns all the time plus the damage is always consistent, if you hit you know how much you dealt.

Apart from the fact that enemies don’t get pushed back like in Doom or recoil in response to the impact (actually Bethesda Doom games don’t have that either). The double barrel shotgun’s model is too small and the sound effect is not bassy enough.
But stupidest is the super nail gun. It’s just a more powerful and ammo hungry nail gun. Which is just a mini gun. Also the lightning rod is so awkward to use and ammo hungry. I hate it like the rail gun because you have to be aimed exactly at the model to hit it, oh and it eats all your ammo in seconds.
Really the only good weapons are the Grenada launcher, nail gun and double barrelled shotgun.

    • @ollytherevenant1653
      @ollytherevenant1653 3 роки тому +13

@@ribenasquash the nail gun is more useful on weaker enemies and if you need DPS it’s really good for some of the tankier dudes. I don’t find the lightning gun awkward to use at all not sure what makes you feel that, also it’s a very powerful weapon so limited ammo is to be expected.

Every member of NIN at the time contributed sound (including Chris Vrenna who later came in to work on Doom 3's sound after the deal with Trent fell though), as well as American McGee, John Romero and some pre-existing sound libraries. I think the NIN team is responsible for much of the synth-y stuff, McGee's stated they had access to audio equipment that the Id guys didn't. *Hopefully* that includes the Quad Damage firing noise, which has remained a series staple, but I can't say for sure. Many of the vocals don't seem to be Trent's, but I'd bet anything on the player jump noise being his at the very least.

Ranger's double-barrel might be a semi-auto "tandem" gun with all of its significant parts duplicated. But in the old Doom it shoots so slow that you could be easily overrun, it was mainly for picking an enemy at a time. Shotgun in Quake is a little weaker, but it shoots 3-4 times as fast...

I just CANNOT stand the art style and weird sort of half serious theme of DOOM Eternal where canonically you are just insanely powerful regardless whereas in older games it was you the player alone prevented such a fate and the atmosphere even reflected that sometimes, particularly in QUAKE and i don’t care what anyone says i think the story was just far too overbearing and took away from the ‘DOOM experience’ where really what makes these old school games special is the connection between main character and the player and that kind of dynamic influence you have on character and in Eternal that essence was absolutely pulverised. I was so disappointed when Eternal came out as I was expecting a little funkier DOOM 2016, not a complete 180 in almost every aspect of that game; I thought DOOM 2016 was near perfect… That’s just me though.

For 23 years now i think this is one of the best goddamn 3D shooters with an absolute perfect dense and eerie Lovecraftian atmosphere. The first time i played it was on the Nintendo 64, when my dad rented the game from a video rental store (back when you could still rent games too) and the Soundtrack was terrifying and really enhanced the offworldly vibes. When i got myself a copy of the Saturn in 2000, it introduced me to Nine Inch Nails in the best form possible. I even played a homebrew version of the PC version on my Dreamcast in 2005 and PSP back in 2007. The game has since been always part of ANY PC operating system install. No matter if Desktop or Laptop. It just has to be there. Of course nowdays with source ports. And till this day Quake and Quake III Arena are the best of the series. The Sci-Fi setting of Quake II and Quake IV just doesn't work… That's not Quake to me.

  • @nathane5287
    @nathane5287 3 роки тому +4

    Awesome retrospective.
I kind of missed out on Quake when I was younger, too young when it came out (6 or something), and when I got my first PC when I was 12, I was all about Half-Life, Max Payne, Aliens versus Predator 1 & 2, and then later when I upgraded for HL2 and Max Payne 2 I discovered Doom 3, Quake 4, Prey, Halo and then FEAR, and those became my favourites (I had other non FPS one, C&C Tiberian Sun, Red Alert 2 I remember being really big for me, and later SW Jedi Outcast & Academy, and Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, and Dawn of War)
So the OG Doom & Quake kind of went past me, I was happy with the sequels and saw little reason to go back being a kid.
But now, with retro FPS games coming out in the last 3 years, I think the biggest thing that stands out about them for me over the flashier sequels is just the level design and architecture which were integral in creating an atmosphere, this subconscious sensation of running inside an infernal machine, being a rat inside a massive vertical maze.
Stuff like regenerating health, reloading, cover, run speed, those are things that work in their own gameplay balances, and it's a shame that they've influenced game direction after 2002-> in an unbalanced way, but in my mind the loss that was the biggest was a sacrifice in level design, until the indies and modders now.
So yeah, Quake has gone up there for me, as a newcomer.
And Slayer's Testaments, man, that "mod" is more of a game now, tons of cool maps, a lot more systems, it's just so ambitious and works together better than most of those Doom 2016/Eternal mods which lack the whole package that ties it all together, they often lack the maps that utilize the gameplay and enemies.
And Slayer's Testaments feels fresh because it isn't just a copy-paste of 2016/Eternal, but has it's own maps in the theme of that universe, within that old school level design philosophy.
I almost wish it were a paid game at this point, put it on steam -- If nothing else, put it on steam as a free mod that requires players to own Quake & 2016 & Eternal to be able to play (like Enderal for Skyrim or RealRTCW needing you to own the games - requiring them to hopefully appease the publishers about it not feeling like it's money out from their pockets), and then whenever the modders/devs do make their own game, people can see that they already have right there on their developer page one of the guaranteed highest rated mods on steam.
Hopefully Wrath: Aeon of Ruin turns out great despite the rocky development.
Doesn't Doombringer also use Quake 1/Darkplaces engine?

You’re right about Trent Reznor’s soundtrack being key to its success. Quake 2 is really just a game made in auto- pilot. No Romero meant Carmack took creative control and he made Quake 2 out of cardboard and Rivita’s to match his personality.
The reason Quake is such a masterpiece is because of the cohesion of all its elements and it’s restraint, Romero drops mushrooms and creates a vivid and unique universe then Carmack crafts it into something practical. Quake 2 is just practice. Quake 3 Carmack admitting he has no ideas at all and just makes a death match game.
Quake won’t be repeated any time soon. There is too much anxiety in game development. Everything has to be bigger, bolder and brighter (or muddier and gloomier this past generation). But art isn’t about adding things, it’s about leaving things out. Ok baroque art is about finding the most ostentatious and be bombastic end product but if it’s going to be art there has to be a strong and clear vision and meaning.
Half Life 2 achieves this with the environmental design being so bleak and deserted, almost haunted, using muted tones and utilitarian urban design. The meaning is that society has completely devolved in tyranny and mankind is in a state of near collapse. So the elements all combine (no pun intended) to amplify the other. This is what is meant by “greater than the sum of its parts”.
Quake achieves this with it’s tightly controlled blue-grey and brown natural textures of wood and stone. Everything is wood, stone, iron or water. The levels are all castles which are claustrophobic and damp and mossy. The sound design is echoing and clangy and scrapy. So the elements all cohere to one another. But above all, the ambient/industrial soundtrack ties it all together and draws you in, in stark contrast to the “wake up” power chords and riffs from all subsequent Quakes that simply follow and don’t add anything to the narrative.
So the concept of a cohesive and holistic approach to narrative is what’s missing from modern game design. Everything has to be multiplayer which harms the ability to craft a narrative and personal journey. Nowadays you have to have the latest effects and devs can get carried away.
I would like to see a considered and well realised world in a modern game but there are too many pressures to comply with such a game not being difficult, having online be the focus and an aversion to any theme which takes a unique and original direction.

Its default control setup also stuck with me for so long: forward was the right mouse button, with sidesteps being period & comma. I never bothered to rebind anything so I just played it like that, and then used to also change the controls to that for every other FPS I played because that's what I was used to - it was YEARS before I finally switched to the WASD scheme.

TBH most of PC gamers didn't get specific GPUs until Quake 3, which indeed REQUIRED a graphics card. That was a huge turning point for PC gaming. Luckily it happened at the same time as the arrival of Riva Vanta, which the first trully affordable fast GPU, and Voodoo's Glide was on it's death bed. I think you can pin point that as the very moment nVidia was set to become an empire from the underdog it was.

lol jk! Good video, hapi burfdai Quake, and the news of ID creating a Quake singleplayer reboot is lit. Quake 1's story lends itself to exploring varied environments and dimensions - visiting a Q2-like realm but not limiting themselves to just that is possible. Indeed, 'alien humans' appear as Sentinels in nuDoom and could explain knights and death knight as well (if not an evil offshoot from that society).
Even Champions I've noticed was wise in incorporating more lovecraftian elements, and promoting Ranger - all BEFORE retro ranger and retro dm6 reared their awesomely polygonal heads. All in all, I hope this new reboot looks to Quake 1 and it's mission packs the most.

I was 9 years old when Quake came out but haven't played it until I was like 12 due to our family not having a PC. Even though 3 years was an eternity in world of FPS games back then and I've played many games that came after and prior to Quake, none of them mesmerized me to the same level. I fell even more in love after I've learned what Quakeworld is - to this day this is my benchmark of what online shooters should be about, even though I do not play anymore. When I've first got to play it with that amazing soundtrack (played pirated version without music first), it felt like being transferred to another dimension.
Few games, or in broader sense, products of culture have made me falling in unconditional love for them. Quake, Fallout 2, Wipeout series (from third one up to Omega Collection titles), Doom Eternal are the games I could bring to desert island and never get bored by them. In movie space, I feel the same about Alien, which I have watched more than 20 times through my life now and each time I loved every minute of it.
Yeah, Doom came first, DN3D set new benchmarks when it comes to interactivity, Unreal had huge levels with outdoor areas and good enemy AI, Half-Life turned the genre upside down, Soldier of Fortune excelled in gore and the list goes on and on.
Thing is, all these games have not captured the same thing that Quake did - a feeling of being transported to a twisted, broken, corrupted and rotten world full of dread.

The 3 sounds that I can't unhear from Quake
    1. The sound of shooting with quad damage
    2. The ogres grenades pinging
    3. The spawn slapping the walls

I want Quake V to be made like DOOM Eternal and to keep going with the II and IV storyline.

This was the first game I ever played growing up, and used to play it with my Dad in co-op.
It's no small statement to say it's been a major factor in who I've become.
