I really like these long term reviews, you know so much more about a product after using it for awhile and putting it through paces. It seems like a nice upgrade and still best all around action camera, especially if your first priority is using it as rugged action camera. Great review!

Good video!! I've had the Hero Black7 for a couple of years now, and I just bought the Hero9. I think it definitely is worth the upgrade for 3 reasons: 1) Horizon lock -- the amount of time I've spent in post straightening footage is riduculous!!! And I'm SURE I'm holding the camera straight!! 2) 2.7k at 120 FPS with hypersmooth. Buttery smooth slo mo you can zoom in on. 3) The media mod mic add on. You almost had to contort yourself to get a decent mic on the GoPro - customized cage, extra cables, stupid size mic that turned a low-profile camera into something that has everone staring at you, then asking what you're doing. No thank you. As a bonus, the media mod has a couple of cold shoe mounts that I can put a light on. Have you ever tried to hold the GoPro & your cell phone with its flashlight in one hand to get a shot of yourself at night? You have to hold them in one hand, because its tooo awkward to have both arms extended when you're trying to vlog at night. So these may seem like small things, but to me they were huge issues & the GoPro9 was totally worth the price to fix them!

Don't worry 'bout that lens - it isn't that fragile. The Hero 7 is also great. In terms of image quality - the 7 and the 9 are anyways pretty close. As you notice - same processor inside.
Get a Hero 7 and look at the Reelsteady Go software. It's amazing but check out the modes with the software before you purchase. If your happy with 4k 30 or 4k 25 (you can stretch this a little in post for 24) then I say go for it.

I bought Hero 9 couple of weeks ago. Not regretting. I agree with everything in this video. UI is sluggish but you won’t spend much time on that. Video quality and stabilization are next-level.

How did you experience the user interface? Was it slow?
I use the GoPro primarily as a dash cam when riding, and find it good for that purpose. Definitely better than my Insta 360 One X with its 1990s looking footage :)

Unfortunately, the camera replacement part of the subscription plan costs $99.00.
Even after the second update there are noises in the dark areas ( not talking about filming in the dark, but the dark areas of the footage filmed in a very bright sunny day )

I use adobe Premiere Pro. Good features. It used to crash a lot some time ago - seems to be a lot more stable now.

Collected over the years. Some are form Epidemic Sound, some from Audio, some from smaller sources.
Purchase my Hero9 at the end of September 2020--great camera and all works fine except the USB-C port is malfunctioning. It does not recognize the Media Mod and it intermittently connects to my PC. Charging is hardly ever a problem though.
To day I looked at it under my microscope and found that one of the pins on the USB-C connector has burnt halfway through the plastic of the connector. B&H won't take it back so I hope that GoPro replaces it for me.
You may try purchasing the GoPro Plus - can come handy in such cases.
But even without it - it is a clear reason for replacement.
Hey Just found and love Ur channel... I film my channel on my mobile phone and looking to upgrade to a GoPro 9 should I? I have heard it freezes and you lose footage on the trail that could be scary thanks heaps
GoPro's freezing has been always a very wide topic. Generally - I'm a fan of Hero series and usually prefer them over the rest - mostly because of the flat color profile. SHooting with action camera is different: you have no autofocus/shallow depth of field option, but it's much more portable and can give you the freedom for shooting form a lot nicer angles. Just forget about good low light performance. The rest is really cool!

I had the Hero 9 for 3 weeks before sending it back. Footage was awful most of the time... support said it was bad firmware so I updated the firmware which ended up practically bricking the camera. My first (and last) GoPro.
Sorry to hear that you are disappointed. Well - this is as good as action cameras are these days. You may check the Sony ZV1.
@Tech4all Hi Michael, Great Content! I'm thinking of buying my new first GoPro. I do have a few questions though.
1. Does it overheat easily after long period of high resolution recording? Or would be it better to use a capture card instead and just plug into pc for storage?
2. Any heat issues when use as a webcam? If not, when use a webcam, is the gopro charging or on external power supply?
Hi Alvin! The GoPro gets warm, however doesnt overheat. It is normal to have devices warm up these days - processors are pretty powerful.
No issues as webcam. Works like charm.

It doesn't. It's my mistake - the resolution is 2.7k. Sorry about that and a good catch!

Can you please tell what mic adapter shot gun you featured here? Loved the reviews.
I used the 3.5mm adapter and used the VideoMic Pro. But it will work great with simpler mics as well.
I have read in a lot of videos that the go pro mic adaptor 3.5 mm is not compatible with the go pro hero 9. but at 12 minutes in your video I see that you have it equipped. Have you not had issues?
It's expected to be supported with a firmware update soon enough.
If I’m going to purchase my first GoPro should I purchase this one or go for the GoPro 8. I wanting to shoot my nature walks and possibly some cinematic work and music videos.
You won't notice much of a difference between Hero 7, 8 or 9.
I personally would probably go for a Hero 7 - has the same CPU and sensor as 8, and has the replaceable lens.

GoPro is way better than the dji you recommended people get. What you used this GoPro for was the bare minimum and so was your settings... Tons of videos available on YT that can help you tinker with your settings and get the settings to what it needs to be. The GoPro isn't a show off social media camera.. just to say you have one. It can do a lot more than what you were using it for.
You can say similar things about Osmo Action and they would be correct too. I am still a big fan of GoPro - just think that they can do a lot better than adding software features, which they can add without releasing a new generation...

Hey Rachel; True that - quite a nice setup. Not exactly a rig - it is a cube with camera mount options plus light (called Mirfak Moin) and a microphone - also by Mirfak. I think they used to sell something like a smartphone vlogging kit containing most of them.

Hey Somesh - there are a lot of wonderful cameras out there. As a first Action cam - it's great, although pretty expensive. You can always get something cheaper to figure out what your priorities are.
I noticed at one point you had it zoomed into 5x. I haven't found the zoom option. What am I missing?
This is a software-zoom that I've applied in post-production so that we can see more details about the image quality. So sorry about the confusion caused. There's no 5x zoom option inside the GoPro.
I am currently waiting for mine to arrive and I definitely am looking forward to it. My last GoPro was the Hero 4 Silver and i was pretty happy with it. I guess it was time for Upgrade though an that it will be worth it 😁

I've noticed a lot of comments about microphone problems. Perhaps a batch with issues. GoPro have had such troubles in the past too.

The flagship phones do not have this easy to carry form factor. But no - the image is not better than a flagship.
If you want a dedicated camera for traveling - think about the Sony ZV1.

I bought myself a GoPro 9 when there was a discount in the GoPro store last week & till today I did not have any issues with it

@Olivier La Buse many people have had problems with their GoPro but you can not generalize it to all cameras of them..I had no issues with mine yet - but I have it just for 1 week 😅
@Olivier La Buse no no😂 idk but I think the battery life is not really longer than before (even though I had no GoPro before -but from my old ActionCam the camera was running ~2h) -I mean 1h recording and the battery is fully empty? :(

I'm going on vacation soon this summer and would like to film this with an action camra I can borrow one from a friend I have the choice between the osmo action and the go pro 9 the go pro 9 has better colors in the go pro collor mode because i cant Edit the Videos after but I am afraid that I will lose a lot of videos because i hear it freeze ofteb my question Does the go pro 9 still freeze often? Heey, nice to emeet you here. Well - the Osmo Action is clearly still a lot more stable than Hero 9. But I've never lost a file because of a freezing condition. It's just laggy.
Quite good review. I like "ocasional freezes". My last Gopro (Hero 6) freezed so often that I reached my limit and decided no more Gopros beyond my trusty Hero 4 Black and moved to the DJI Osmo Action. I never regreted this move and will all firmware updates (1.10 now) it has become incredible. Absolutely reliable, never a glitch or a freeze. Intead of the crap 9 I bought a DJI Pocket 2 and I loved. Not a single advantage on Hero 9 against my 2 DJIs.
The Osmo Pocket does not compete with the Hero. These are two very different devices each with their pro's and con's. The Hero is an action camera. Rough, tough, inherently waterproof, dust proof, amazing electric stabilization (generally better in high light), and simple/straightforward features well-suited for easy, quick, on-the-go usage. Basically, everything the Osmo Pocket (1/2) is not. The Osmo is a camera on a mechanical gimbal not meant for action. It allows for smooth pans, tilts, programmed sequences, subject tracking, amazing mechanical stabilization (generally better in low light), more features, more complex, take your time with it. Basically, everything the Hero is not. I think almost no one should buy a Hero, because the truth is that chances are your life is too boring for a Hero. But if your life is not boring, the Hero may have a place in your bag and it is the best action camera hands down. I think almost no one should buy an Osmo Pocket, because they are too expensive for what they are.
I think Moments talks about the Osmo Action which is indeed a lovely action camera. Its firmware is a lot better than what we have on GoPro.
@@TechMishka Whoops, looks like I read too fast. In that case, yeah, no, the Hero 9 blows that away. At least the Pocket does win at some points, albeit not at pure action camera needs.

solid review. this was gold for me; "if you already have a hero7 or 8... you may barely notice the upgrade..." that settled it for me. i have a hero7 and like its SMALL form factor and seeing that the new hero9 is bulky and incompatible with my previous stuff. NOPE. ill wait for the hero10 or 11 to ensure i really get more for my money.

Great review! Interesting to see that low light performance is actually worse than the Hero8. I wasn't expecting that!
We've got the Hero6 and I was keen to get the Hero9 due to the better image stabilisation and the front facing camera. However it does seem like there are some big tradeoffs, especially in regards to weight. This makes me feel better about waiting for the Hero10, which I'll probably have to do anyway as I'm living in Nicaragua during the covid pandemic and I don't think I'll be able to buy the Hero9 here.
There are awesome deals for Hero 7 and 8, and they are excellent cameras too. Keep safe!

Well I decided this year to stay with the 8, it's not that I don't appreciate the new things, it's just that most of them aren't necessary for me and mostly because it doesn't seem like I'm going to travel any time soon because of covid :-(
I wonder, if you shoot in low light in smaller resolution, will the GoPro 9 give more details actually cause maybe it does some pixel binding or will it be the same?
BTW, The horizon leveling works only for 45 degrees without the Max lens, but what they forgot to tell us is that you can enable the Max mode and use horizon leveling in any degree even without the Max lens (it does crop the image and lose some details)

Yeah, it was a surprise that part about low light. Sadly, lowering the resolution doesn't make much of improvement... Will keep on testing it, but so far doesn't look that promising.
My greatest disappointment is GoPro keeping the old CPU. It's still a wonderful action camera, but not that much better than the Hero 6 for instance...

Yeah, makes perfect sense to keep up using the Hero 8. Maybe we will see something new from DJI, or maybe the Hero 10 will be the one worth our attention.

How long can you film on one battery charge 4k?
if it is a continuous video - the battery may last close to 2 hours.
1:40~ without frwd screen and auto switchoff(1min) of rear screen.

Compression, LUT/grading. The camera is pretty good.
I thought the whole bundle price seemed really good until I thought about shipping and import fees. At least here in Canada.
If I order from GoPro with the sub bundle it is $399.98usd + $20usd shipping + $45.50usd import for a total of $465.48usd.
Converted to cad that is a total of $597.41cad.
Meanwhile, on amazon.ca, right now, the camera is selling for $529.00cad with free shipping and no import. Even after sales tax it would be cheaper to buy on amazon.
I think the sub bundle deal is a great deal for Americans but it doesn't really offset the cost of bringing the thing in from the States if you can buy it from a local source.
PS: An annoying side note. The bundle deal has existed since the day the GPH9 launched but on Black Friday they changed the website to pretend like the deal was a black friday deal. As soon as black friday was over the site is now pretending it is a "holiday sale." Feels manipulative. ;)

The difference is not that huge, but apparently the 9 has some features that are quite attractive. If price doesn't matter - get the 9.
Well I"ve owned a Go Pro since GoPro 2 came out...and I have NEVER had a hard time centering filming myself or my kids - you just can not miss if you aim the camera somewhat centered...and being in the in the frame - even when there were no screens to view at all.....The angle is so wide that you'd have to be pretty off center by a long shot to miss yourself in camera ....This camera makes it dummy proof to be able to vlog without needing to see yourself in a front view screen...
Agreed. However - there are some situations where you may not be perfectly centered. Or you may not be sure about the mode of shooting - this is when the screen can come really handy.

I use the phone app when I'm clogging in a closer proximity...and want to use narrow or linear...I agree...but the older versions had only one perspective ..wide..lol..so you couldn't miss...
Is there a site that lets us know what the major GoPro 9 lens focal lengths are --- equal to 35mm photography (my career was in 35mm still images so I'm still in that mind-frame).

Hero 8 black is cheaper and both has similar video quality .
If you care about horizon leveling get hero 9 it also has max lens support .

I am curious been looking into purchasing my first action cam with everything you mentioned considered i am leaning towards the hero 9. Right now however they are 129.99 $ difference between the 8 and 9 and the 8 is actually the bundle !! what do i do in this situation is the 9 going to justify the 130$ jump ?
I think the Hero 8 is a better deal for the price you mention. It has better low light performance and pretty much the same grade of stabilization.

Gopro 9 is missing a very important feature: Live Preview on the Gopro app is not supported while recording video. That feature was available in the previous versions. Most of the time I use my phone to preview what I am recording. By missing the said feature, I can no longer frame/record perfect shots when my Gopro is 20ft in the air on a monopod/selfie stick. Very disappointing.
Likely it doesn't show because you are connected via Bluetooth.
@@TechMishka I always connect via Wifi. Please visit Gopro community web - a Gopro official has confirmed that the missing feature is truly not supported in GP9 !!

The Hero 9 is in some ways superior, but the Osmo Action gives me everything that I actually need..
Which would you get? Gp8 for $135 barely used or gp9 $290 new?

Great breakdown of the pros and cons of this camera! Would have been a whole lot better if this video was viewable in 60 fps to be seen as a vlog and not a movie.
60FPS takes so much more space and feels a little weird to my taste. But if you need some of the 60FPS samples - send me a reminder via email and I can upload a lot of them.
@@TechMishka an 8TB hard drive costs a little over $100 on Amazon these days. I've made every video on my channel exclusively in 60 fps and the main feedback that I get is how "life-like" or "true to life" they are. It just makes the viewer feel like they're there. That applies only to vlogs that show the real world as it really is. This certainly doesn't work for movies that try to remove you from the real world and give you a dreamlike experience. In those cases, lowering the frame rate down to 30 or 24 or even lower sometimes gives the effect to pull people into the vision you might be going for. Back in the day, the "real filmographers" thought that producing videos in color removed the cinematic effect they were going for, until they died out and became extinct like the dinosaurs and the elevator button pushers.
I'd also add, you mention that the 9 doesn't really have the innovation we are used to from GoPro. I think for this gen, the Max Lens Mod is their "big innovation" but given that it is an accessory and has been a relatively hard to get accessory so far most GPH9 users don't actually get to experience it.
Yeah, makes sense. It's a good idea, but ... there are a lot of aftermarket solutions that worked well even before. They seem to have locked us to use something that only they produce.
have you experienced any overheating with gp9?
It gets warmer, but never got into overheating condition.
Gopro 9, zoom function. I have zoom displayed in lower right corner of my cam, set up in preferences. Regardless of the setting, standard, activity, etc, the zoom function is greyed out/ turned off. How do I use, the zoom function for video? Does it only work is some video settings, not all, which video settings allow me to zoom in and out? Very frustrating
It works in certain scenarios only. Try shooting in 1080p, and it should be activated.
It would make sense to mention about max lens mode using benefits … they are awesome 🤩

Right now - no. Son there will be an option to use the famous 3.5mm adapter.
I have massive problems with the sound on my GoPro 9. A lot of my recordings have weird popping sounds in the audio. Havn't been able to work around it.
Heard some other people reporting the same. Perhaps a replacement is the only way fixing this...
How many hours last for using , after one full charging.?
Depends on many things - recording resolution, frames per second, length of the videos, screen-on-time, etc; If you record in 1080p and don't stop the recording - it may work fine for more than two hours.

Of course. But you may save some dollars and get Hero 7 or 8, as they are both great too.
Replacement is not free. Read the TOS on gopro's website. It's actually 100 euros every replacement.

Hot or warm? There's a big difference. Often cameras can get warm and that's alright.
It is a vlog strengthened action camera. I would keep my GoPro 8 and wait for the next gen.

Nope, I don't have any of these. The only remark I have is some light microphone glitch. Always used Sandisk card and it works fine. Menus are very slow though.
Thank you for your honesty. I imagine many folks were pissed when their shiny new hero 9 would not fit into their action cam gimbal. I will wait for the Osmo action 2. I suspect they purposely waited for the release of the hero 9.
Given the fact that Hero 9 just now catches up with the front display, it would be so interesting to see what's cooking from DJI now 😇
I plan to get Hero 9 (my old Sony HDR-AS15 from 2012 is slowly dying on me).I used it mainly on my mountain bike.
So Hero will be my next choice.
