    Exterminator wanted 5k to heat treat whole house...2k to chemical treat. However, they were only in one bedroom (bad infestation) and wouldn't only do that. Physically smashed them daily for 3 months with blood everywhere and labor intensive...kinda gross. Kept coming back...bagged box spring and mattress which helped. Used a 10 dollar bag of diatomaceous earth the last month...consistently applied with homemade applicator on all of the bed and any areas where they can climb up. No bedbugs today for the first time!! Is non toxic, but use a filter mask when applying, consistently put it on all of the bed for at least a month (to kill all life cycle stages) and be patient since it won't kill eggs...use a shop vac to pick up also. A 10 dollar bag of DIATOMACEOUS EARTH will take care of your bedbugs!!

    Not freeze. Heat. Hot to the point you can’t be there while it’s that hot, hence exterminators using huge tarp things to cover home while they use the machine. The heat machine costs thousands which is why the experts charge so much…So DE dusting (gotta be really determined as robin stated even if you aren’t really infested) along with the furniture covering, using industrial dryers to dry clothes and then bagging them and the best is STEAMING (bed, carpets, etc). Kills on contact because of the heat.
    All of this together is best for getting rid of them. It takes time, effort, and Im assuming therapy if you are totally infested and hate bugs because i saw 4 and got to work. My uncle worked for Orkin for most of his life and told us what to do--> It’s never one thing. You have to do all of this and guarantee they leave.
    And the bugs live in walls too. They are only known as ‘bed bugs’ because they travel to your bed when they smell CO2 which is the air we breathe in and out. They can tell when we are sleeping or not (unless they are starving and will risk coming out in day time) and then if they have a good host for feeding they will live in your bed or couch or wherever there is a body. They are actually called wall bugs because they usually travel through wall esp in apartments and hotels.
    So while you’re dusting those cracks, Make sure to dust your outlets (safely, with breaker off), the wall borders, the light flicker, shelves, etc. And steam everywhere if you can (Amazon have small and large ones or a industrial store for big ones or a company).
    If you live in an apt or hotel, they will keep moving EVENTUALLY (still takes time) and find other hosts to feed from. Which is why i took a month long vacation (I washed and dried clothes and shoes and left to my moms lol) after i did all of my treatments. It’s been about a month. Not one. I am still dusting, steaming and vacuuming because they caused me some paranoia and anxiety because if you see one bed bug then that means there are about 100+ somewhere in your home and that means there are 1000s+ of eggs.
    Steaming/ heat rid eggs which is most important. Thanks for coming to my TEDtalk lol hope I helped someone! (repost to help save sanity and research)

    Pretty much Diatomaceous Earth, Crossfire insecticide (Only seen it online), Heat treatment and Steam. Caulk any gaps. Throw out invested furniture if severe or deeply penetrated. Put all furniture on a small block on top of a glue trap. That is what I paid $1,200 to exterminator to learn. The heater and blower they use cost around $1,200 and the rest of the stuff is pretty cheap. Once I get rid of these damn bedbugs I'm just gonna buy my own heater and blower then do everything else myself if it happens again. Never know what you're going bring home anymore.

      I know it is crazy you never know what you're going to bring home anymore I take the bus a lot and I'm always so paranoid my daughter takes Ubers when I get home I either throw everything I'm wearing in the washer immediately or I spray my entire outfit and choose pocketbook and everything was 91% rubbing alcohol. Just to be safe these bugs are nightmare and I do not ever want to deal with them again when I had them my landlord at the time had in the lease that they would not take care of them which everyone says is against the law. And I didn't have the money to hire an exterminator to deal with them. My neighbors above me brought them she worked at an airport and they didn't tell anyone well she told me and then I didn't know much about them and then we got them and then they moved in the downstairs apartment saying they just wanted to because of their dogs and they threw a bunch of their furniture away so they spread them from that apartment to the other apartment it was insane trying to keep them at Bay for months and months. Thankfully I'm in a new place now and I still worry a lot I have PTSD from them little bastards.

    I am 26 years as a pest controller, been dealing with bedbugs since about the year 2000 when they began to reappear. If you want to DIY, I always suggest to people that ask to use a dust formulation (over the counter sprays are not as good. Most are pyrethroid material such as Deltamethrin which bedbugs are more tolerant of). DE is a great choice for DIY, bedbugs will not grow tolerant of this material. I say be thorough as possible. Invest in a good flashlight and a duster. Strip down your bed and flip over your mattress and box spring. Thoroughness will only increase your chances of success. Dusting takes practice and the right touch, this is a reason pest controllers have full time jobs.

I didn't have to waste money on those little apple traps, cos it essentially is the same thing. But I am worried that diatomaceous earth itself isn't going to help on its own as much as its probably the only thing I can afford to try. I have a clothing steamer...the ones u fill with water...that would take ages. I'm so grossed & freaked rightt out. How these little bastards can detect our breath/carbon dioxide blows my mind, but what blows my mind worse is knowing no one has a cure to completely eradicate most pests/parasites. Grody. I may have went overboard and had pretty thick piles and didn’t *fully* spread it out, but did some. I didn’t realize until after that people were saying to really brush it into the carpet. Hopefully it’ll be fine? Did you have any issues with breathing it in since you did larger piles rather than spreading it out?

    I used a a Hoover to help a friend vacuum up 5 POUNDS of DE when she did not know how to use it and sprinkled it everywhere.
    When I got to her house, she was standing on her porch crying, because she tried to use a shop vac to pick it up and that is blew it everywhere making more of a mess.
    The Hoover didn't bat an eye, took care of the whole problem.
    She was so impressed she went out and bought a Hoover just because.

I want to apply this to a foam mattress under the liner but afraid of laying over it and breathing it in with just a liner and cover sheet in between; I assume laying on it and moving would disturb it. You might want to mention that DE will destroy your vacuum cleaner if it's not a shop vac or wet vac type vacuum cleaner which are designed to handle material such as DE. A regular home vacuum cleaner (bagless or not), (upright or floor model), is not designed to handle material like DE.

    • @BedBugHeatersByZappBug
      @BedBugHeatersByZappBug  9 років тому +26

      meatball2005 Thanks for commenting! While we've heard from some sources that shop/wet vacs (or a vacuum with a HEPA filter) are necessary to vacuum up DE that hasn't been our experience. We've been able to vacuum it out of our carpets using a simple Hoover vacuum very easily and with no damage to the vacuum. If you do find that your vacuum is unable to get DE out of your carpets you can always spray it down with water and then scoop/sweep it up.

    • @MBill2005
      @MBill2005 9 років тому +6

      ZappBug I used a brand new upright bagless, Hippa filter Bissel vacuum to clean up the DE I had spread on the carpet in one room and the plastic base plate housing on the vacuum just blew apart and fell off, rendering the vacuum unuseable and unrepairable. It was a good vacuum but obviously it was not designed to deal with the likes of DE. I just thought I would share this with anyone who may plan on using a similiar unit to clean up DE. If I find myself needing to vacuum DE again I will be sure to use a shop vac for the job, as I know for certain they are designed to deal with essentially any material, dry or wet.

    • @MBill2005
      @MBill2005 8 років тому

      +csifwtt You may want to take a look at the units they offer on amazon.com. You will find a range of sizes and prices. They even offer small size shop vacs that are rather inexpensive and if the area you need to use it on is not too large that size might work just fine for you without requiring you to spend a lot.

    • @MBill2005
      @MBill2005 8 років тому +1

      +csifwtt You know, .. I should mention here that I had put down a much heavier amount of DE in my space than the woman in this video is demonstrating. It is quite feasible to me that if you would be applying a similar amount as she does in the video your vacuum probably won't have any trouble dealing with it. ........ I might also add, ... that IMO and according to most professionals today, a better form of DE to use is a product called; "CimeXa". ... It is a combination of DE and pyrethum which is a natural insecticide derived from chrysthanenum flowers. CimeXa is more expensive but is much more effective. You can find it on amazon or at other retailers.

    • @MBill2005
      @MBill2005 8 років тому +2

      +csifwtt - In my opinion when dealing with bed bugs it's always better to play it safe and have the HEPA rather than not have it. The issue here concerns the exhaust dust from the vacuum that could easily carry some of what you are trying to get rid of.

      I would not suggest this. DE has sharp edges which tear soft exoskeleton of the bedbugs and causes desiccation. If you clump the DE together this may lessen the material's effectiveness. If you want to use Boric acid as a paste as folks do with cockroaches you can try it. But using a duster is more economical and less noticeable.

    So it's safe for pets and food grade can even eat.. but regardless of human or pet we're not suppose to inhale it... uuum so how can I be sure my pets aren't gonna breathe it in when I start spreading it around.. does it settle once put around the house and lawn!?.. or does it store up more dust when coming in contact with it. I live in a Windy City .. so I'm not confident in that my pets are safe while having this stuff blowing around on my property

      Humidity in the air on the dog's skin moisture in the dog's food all makes the dust of the diatomaceous earth settle and stick to it. You can use this in a mixture of one pound diatomaceous earth to one gallon of water and spray it. The water deliveries will evaporate and the diatomaceous earth will stay adhered to whatever you sprayed it on. It's not just floating in the air waiting for you to suck it in.

    So can I just dump some of this on top of my boxspring so it’s under my mattress and they get exposed to it when they try to travel? Or is that going to cause issues when I pull up my mattress later and it’s all dusty? What do you do with the dust that point?

      A tube sock with a tight-knit, and a funnel putting diatomaceous earth in it tie a knot in the sock. Pat wherever you want the diatomaceous earth to go. That's how I treat my animals, they're small Chihuahuas and the diatomaceous earth is way safer than pesticides for their health. In addition a sock full of Diatomaceous Earth in your car can keep your car from smelling really musty in case you left your window down and your car got rained in. Diatomaceous earth is silica when you buy a new jacket or shoes and it comes with the package of silica gel, it is pretty much the same thing only not food grade. Which is why it says do not eat it.
