This honestly solidified my career aspirations, thank you. I find the dynamic nature of the mind, that you find frustrating, to be beautiful. Isn't it fascinating just thinking about the neuroscience of a shift in our perspective to the world? I was typing this up and as i was typing the "if you know you know" part really hit home haha.
Same here. To me, both pyschiatry and neurology are so interesting and appeal to my deeper interests and fears at the same time. I hope you can do well!
Compassion fatigue...thanks for that comprehensive nomenclature reminder of what to call something when you want to put your head through concrete. You rock. I'm not even a doc or looking at going to med school but I learn something every time I watch one of your videos!
Great video as usual Dr. Jubbal- one important point to be made is that because the environment is “chill” and the specialty is non competitive, it does not always attract the best people. In a field like plastic surgery the vetting process is intense. In psychiatry there are a lot of mediocre residents who are unlikely to advance the field and to have a very shallow, checklist, oriented way of thinking about mental illness.
@ yes, research. But also practising in a thoughtful and complex way- not relying on DSM checklists, prescribing unnecessarily, and developing a more complex way of formulating patients.
Hello sir , I m India,Due to some issue, I started medical school at age 25. Right now I m in final year mbbs(MD) my current age is 30. I done step 1 with score 236......... Could there be an issue with the match due to this? 🙏🙏
The fact that Psychiatry is a medical specialty is absolutely wild. Most of the diagnoses 1st line treatments are SSRIs or 2nd gen antipsychotics. And it has been proven that there is no correlation between low serotonin levels and depression.
We use a lot of medications even though they are not correcting a deficiency. Serotonergic enhancement can facilitate neuroplasticity as well as “take the edge off” for lack of better phrasing… they aren’t perfect meds, as with all pharm it’s about tradeoffs. Specialty training is important for judicious prescribing imo, I agree there is an overprescribing issue, but remember that >50% of SSRIs are prescribed by PCP’s… not throwing shade, but more mild mood disorders shouldn’t be jumping to pharma therapy only, as appears to be the predominate issue I’ve observed personally.
Well, that is the recent assertion by Joanna Moncrieff in London. There's a lot of controversy swirling over that right now. It will be a while before it is "proven."
One of the reasons psychiatry needs to be a medical specialty is because we have to distinguish between mental illness and medical diagnosis that look like mental illness, (anemia can look like depression, hyperthyroidism can look like mania, etc.) -something that only doctors can do.
This is more “why I wouldn’t” not “why I didn’t” as you are discussing things you learned throughout your medical career through the present instead of your perspective as a medical student.

@@nathanielpekas4469 He spent about a minute describing some things he saw on his psych rotation but they’re all interpreted in the lens of his entire career. My point is he never seriously thought about becoming a psychiatrist during medical school.
I agree that there are good and bad residents in every field- but as a whole less competitive specialties will probably attract, on average, worse residents, since most people can easily get acceptance. Also, many people go into psychiatry for the lifestyle, not for interest in the field, as in plastics or surgical fields.
We got "why I didn't psychiatry" before GTA 6
😂

Awesome! Glad the video helped add clarity. That’s my hope

9:48-There was a popular book inspired by that. It was written by a plastic surgeon (Maxwell Maltz, MD) and titled “Psychocybernetics” .
Okay, wow! That's far from being biased personal opinions. This is very well thought out, thank you.
I am caught between psych and family med. not matter which one, I have mid level creep to worry about
Wow I'm at the exact same state. Between psychiatry and GP in the UK
I think you can find a dual specialty program
@badushathahir5263 so question, are yall experiencing the mid level creep too? Was just curious
how old are you
I would like to see more on the mindfulness apps. Bringing objectivity to subjective field is amazing
great content as always! and yes, please cover the medication devices in a separate video, i would love to hear more about your experience 😊
studio/office looks clean 👌🏽

What do you mean by advancing the field? Like research?

Why do most psychiatrists and psychologists don’t take health insurance?
Their own mental health.
12:00 This is just a form of Neurofeedback!
Psychiatry has never been a "whole person" science for me. My doctors were cruel and superficial. Checklist skills only. No real interest in outcomes.
Can you talk more on those devices Kevin? Fascinated by the EEG band and their utility 😊
Whats the 2 app used to tract heart rate and brain waves ?? that would be a cool video to expand on
You should do Why I didnt Oncology! Thanks KevJu(m)bba!
you think people making $350 an hour up to 850k a year being a senior correctional psychiatrist are weird? stick to family med
wow, i love that
Love the glasses look.
Rumor is he doesn't even need them. Just a fashion statement.

Your age shouldn’t be an issue. A lot of people start residency at around 30, like I did.
0:45 weird camera angle.
When is "Why I didn't I choose OBGYN?"
are you on finasteride?
You must be joking. A psychiatrist helping people? What a joke.
What weed are u on?
Second Camera angle isn't necessary
Disagree 😊. Sometimes necessary to break the monotony of a video like this where it’s just mainly talking. Plus his office setup is neat !
