    ✅ In This Video
    This video goes over the pros and cons of each type of camper AND three questions to ask yourself BEFORE chosing an Rv.
    What are the pros and cons of selecting a camper that you drive versus a travel trailer that you tow?
    I've met so many people who've bought the wrong camper-- and now they're stuck with it. Don't make this mistake!
    Are you planning to boondock, stay at campgrounds or camp at state and national parks? How long do you want to stay before breaking camp?
    Learn the pros and cons of owning a Class A motorhome-- towing, setup time, how often to break camp that is ideal for this kind of camper. Where can this camper go and where is it not suited?
    Learn the features and benefits of a Class B camper van. What are they good for, and what are their limitations? Can you live fulltime in one?
    What's so great about Class C campers and what are the downsides of owning one? How often should you break camp with one of these?
    What are the pros and cons of towing a trailer?
    If you are thinking of buying a bumper trailer, what do you need to know? What is the good and bad about owning this type of travel trailer? What is like to drive one?
    Are you thinking of buying a fifth wheel camper? What type of camping are they best suited for? How long is the setup time? What are the downsides of owning a fifth wheel?
    I've owned seven campers including a truck camper, bumper pull travel trailer, two class C motorhomes, two fifth wheels and a camper van. No type of camper is perfect. It's all a trade off as they all have upsides and downsides. This video goes over the pros and cons of each type.
    This video will help you find the perfect type of camper for YOU!

    Main point as you said is to match the rig to your style of camping. Big difference between part time and full time traveler's needs. When it comes to space it's not the size of the space but the effectiveness of how the space is utilized. When I was 21, I lived and traveled in a 1965 VW factory camper for a year and a half. Never felt like I needed more space. Now 50 years later we travel 10K miles a year in retirement but maybe 8 to 12 weeks a year total. We've done coast to coast trips living in the back of a pick up with a topper shell on the back, eating in restaurants and occasionally staying in motels when the weather was bad. We got our first pull behind (a T@B) as simply a means of saving money on travel expenses (which reduced our costs by about 60%) and to have a means of sitting comfortably at night to edit and download video. We moved up to a larger TT when we decided to do this more seriously and then moved up to a larger 2 axle, one slide out unit for more extensive journeys. Eventually we almost gave up on the lifestyle completely due to constant and routine failures due to improper assembly and construction in the TT industry. I always said that they were built by drunken chimpanzees on a Friday ! Eventually we discovered truck campers (which because of the smaller volumes tend to have better quality control) and fell in love with the concept. It took us 5 tries to find the one that suited our needs and budget and we're glad that we finally found that "sweet spot". Takes about 10 minutes to disconnect the tie downs, raise it up and drive the truck out from under it. Takes about twice that long to mount and secure it. Even so, we never take it off in our travels as we like to have all our stuff with us (including bathroom) when we explore on a daily basis. Benefits of a truck camper off the top of my head are: no tag or registration fees, no separate insurance policies or premiums ($15 yr add on to truck policy), no additional tire, axle, wheel bearing maintenance costs, simplified set up and tear down procedure, the ability to make a U-turn anywhere an automobile can, the ability to easily reverse for any required distance, the ability to park in any parking lot space, the ability to fit in any size campsite including most tent sites, better ground clearance for semi-off road travels, much less expense when passing through tolls (charged by number of axles) and making passages on ferries (charged by linear foot), and my favorite as a UA-cam creator, the ability to stop and pull off to the side of the road in an instant, almost anywhere in a limited space to get that classic shot of wildlife, waterfalls etc. :-)

      Yes! My first camper was a truck camper. It was pretty basic. They sure are making much nicer ones now. Can't beat the convenience! You guys can camp ANYWHERE. Just moving up from my 21ft camper van to my 30ft fifth wheel changed closed a lot of options for me as far as which campgrounds I can fit into. BUT I wanted the convenience of leaving "home" without having to break camp. I would definitely get one of those new fancy truck campers some day-- if I could afford one. Enjoy!

    The Super C is a relatively new RV type, but they’re basically a big rig front (like a Freightliner) with an extremely strong chassis. They’re safer than a Class A because the engine is forward of the driver. They’re also easy to get serviced because you take them to big rig truck service centers, and the engine is much more accessible. They can tow much heavier weights than a class A. The down side is they’re very pricey. My favorite setup is a 5th wheel.

    • @LizAmazing
      @LizAmazing  3 роки тому

      Those are some great plusses to the Super C- thanks so much. I am seeing more of them in the past year so they must be getting popular. Agreed that they are pricey. The main difference between a driveable and towable is that you will get more living space with a towable. However, if you are always on the move, a driveable is the way to go.

    I had a 22" Wilderness TT. At first I liked it, but I took it with me on a job 400 miles from my home. Stayed in it every night . When I came back home I parked it and didnt go in fro a year. The sway bars really helped in towing. In retrospect if I had it again I would change the inside to give me more room. The bed was in the back and took up way too much space. I think a smaller bed and a small recliner would have been better. I was by myself. I dont have it and it I did a lot of camping I would never get a TT. Maybe a small class C 25 feet or less. The ONLY thing a TT has over a mobile unit is if the engine in a MH goes out you're pretty much through for a while. Great channel btw

    As a RV owner I ran into a real problem with my Travel Trailer as has many. The trailer frames are thin metal and of a poor grade of steel. Our trailer was making sounds as we backed into our camp sites and I thought is was to be expected , but after viewing a youtube video about frames cracking and breaking I inspected ours only to find 7 places of damage . My frame was in danger of collapse , The tremendous twisting on the I beams had caused the cross braces that kept the I beam in its proper orientation did two things . The cross braces pushed through the Door side I Beam and Pulled the weld out of the other side . The I beam vertical web cracked / spider cracked both sides . And were permanently deformed , leaning to the door side at the bottom. This was caused by sharper turns to the right which caused such tire scrub . You can see this when backing into a camp site or making a right turn which is always sharper to the right in America. I recommend regular inspections of your Frames from 4 ft before and after your axles on the I beam web and spring shackles and even springs . Also on 5th wheels when you load your trailer weight on your truck look for movement in the exterior facade from the basement forward. Any cracks indicates a cracked frame that can destroy your unit quickly or worse. These things are easily welded up if caught in time as I did. A rust colored thin scratch about 1 inch above the Flange of the I beam is a crack that has rusted . Usually you can see some form of deformation at the crack. Its a unfortunate reality but its managed easy enough for RVs with more than one axle. Its a well known problem .

    • @LizAmazing
      @LizAmazing  Рік тому +1

      Oh no. Sorry this happened to you. Thanks for sharing about this. You've done a good service by reminding others to inspect their frame. Thanks again and hope you have that behind you now. See you in the next video.

    Very helpful video, thanks! I have decided on a fifth wheel but I do want to boondock. I’ll have to do more research on how long of a rig I can get and still be able to do that in the parks. I did see a cute 24 foot fifth wheel but that went fast (used). I’m in no rush and will definitely adhere to your helpful tips! So much to learn!

    • @LizAmazing
      @LizAmazing  4 роки тому

      Hi Sophia. Yes, so much to learn. Smaller is better if you want to be nimble, move often, and boondock. I went from a 30' fifth wheel to a 35' fifth wheel a few months ago. We are limited to which state and national parks can take us. However, as fulltimers, it's nice to have all the comforts. Been on the road 18 months now. Happy camper shopping to you. I think you'll like how much better a fifth wheel pulls than a travel trailer. Enjoy!

    I see this is an older post, but I'm a new subscriber Liz, and thought I'd respond. I've been camping since I was a child actually, as my parents took us camping every summer! After I got married, I've had travel trailers, slide in campers in the box of the truck, and now have a 36' diesel pusher motorhome with 4 slides and a residential fridge. It's 12 years old now, but many pass it off as being brand new, and I do much of my own 'fix-it's' and all maintenance. I get about 9 miles per gallon (diesel) and pull a Honda CRV behind, for...as you say, once your set up, having a vehicle to check out the area and get groceries is just prudent! We do 'some' boon-docking, but generally stay in RV Parks/resorts, and still own our 'sticks & bricks' so generally do our camping in the summer months, as we live in Canada, and travel south to Az in the winter. We're coming up on our 40th anniversary, so it's been a long haul of work, kids and house renovations/maintenance, and we figured it was time to 'get out on the road' and not be bumping into one another! There is just SO much to see in all of North America, and we've seen much of the west coast, and will see even more of it, but want to include some east coast adventures at some point as well. We've driven to Alaska twice over the decades, and I always look forward to the next time, as there is just so much to see there, and of course the scenery and wildlife is awesome. Stay safe Liz, and I'm quite enjoying your video's! I'm also looking at e-bikes, and after watching your video on them, it should now be somewhat easier! Thank you!

      Hi Dale!
      So nice to hear from you and welcome to our channel! So cool that you pretty much grew up camping! And that is great diesel mileage you are getting with your Class A. Paul and I want to get to Alaska some day- I bet it is everything everyone says it is- and more! Agreed that there is SO much to see in North America. And at 19 months in, we are just getting started.
      We also don't do a lot of boondocking. Really, only if we are traveling long distance and stay the night at a rest area or Walmart.
      E-bikes are the best! We just reviewed Paul's bike after he's put 1000 miles on it. Check it out here: ua-cam.com/video/5X6C1oCxPUg/v-deo.html
      And we plan to be in Arizona this winter. Would be nice to see you at a campground! Safe travels to you as well, and congrats on your upcoming 40th anniversary!

    Great job. We had a 35' 5th wheel toyhauler & loved it. But when we went from 2 to 1 F350 trucks it became a pain to remove truck bed cap & install bed hitch every time we wanted to go camping. A tree fell and cut 5er in half. We decided to get a bumper pull TT. I didn't want to go over 30'. (Husband thinks bigger is better-Not) it tows really well with husky hitch. Unhooking & set up does not take very long at all as you mentioned. Knowing the rig & hitch and how it works helps. We are weekend warrior's but take two 1-week journeys when we can ... coin toss >

    Thanks Liz for all of the info. I’ve been thinking I had my mind made up twice now. First I thought camper van, then decided it won’t be big enough when I have a dog and decided Class C would be perfect. Now I don’t know again. I retired recently and really hope to live winters in my rig in the S.W. doing a lot of boondocking. I was thinking comfort and caution/safety with the C and being able to drive off if not feeling safe. I saw a great interview with a woman in her Lazy Daze and fell for the rig.

      I've had two Class C's and I think they are great for solo travel. In fact, I met someone at a campground who has been soloing in her Class C for three years. Yes, they do feel a little top heavy, but man-oh-man do they have a ton of storage. And they are WAY cheaper than a Class A. Also you can more easily find 24 -29 feet Class C's than you can a Class A that short. I am not familiar with Lazy Daze-- just googled-- they look cute! Happy shopping!

    Lots of great information ~ Thank you! I have an Aspect Winnebago 30 C and I absolutely love it! It is aerodynamically perfect and has a windshield, instead of an overhead bed, so I can get up to 10 to 12 miles a gallon on the freeway ~ and, sometimes, even more if the wind is at my back. 😉 This is absolutely perfect for me and it has three slide outs, a great stereo system and $16k worth of added options. I have automatic levelers so there is no problem with setting up and tearing down. Takes about five minutes tops. I would highly recommend Winnebago's for anybody starting out. They're very well-made and since they've been around for so long, it's easy to get parts anywhere in this country. Anyway, thank you for your great video(s)! Enjoy them all!!

    Hi Liz. Just found your channel today. Good job! My wife and I love the outdoors. Hiking and biking are something we both really enjoy. So last year we bought a used pop-up camper. In short - we loved it. We also loved the experience it afforded us in the outdoors. This is where our thoughts started running rampant. We quickly stated thinking of where we could go and Yellowstone became our destination for late summer 2020. Because of the time invoked in setting up the pop-up we determined it would not be a preferred camper on a 3-day cross country trip (one way) not to mention the uneasiness of thinking about camping in bear country in a canvas topped pop-up camper. So...by fall last year we purchased a 2020 Jayco WhiteHawk 24MBH, a 29’ travel trailer. I think (for this time in our lives at least) we hit the proverbial nail “on the head!” We love it. As we look at it we want a nice place to stay when we go to the outdoor places we want to go. Now we have one - everywhere we may wander! Keep up the good episodes!

    I have an Aspect Winnebago 30C and really love the lay out. It does NOT have a bed on top of the chassis, but instead, it has an aerodynamic design to help with the gas mileage ~ I can get 9 to 12 mph with this design. I also love the master bedroom with the Queen size temperpedic bed! It's a definite "glamping" vehicle, but very practical as well. It has the automatic leverers, and 3 slide outs, so it takes less than 2 minutes to set up. A definite plus ~ just thought I'd chime in and let you know that all class C's don't have the big bulky bed on top ~ Winnebago really has their design down and I recommend the Aspect 30C ~
    Thanks again for all your good viewpoints!

    I purchased a bumper pull bullet 221RBS I think. I have been out 3 times this year and I really like it. It has an electric hitch jack and electric stabilizers. Hitching up and unhitching takes very little time, allowing for easy set up and break down. I like the interior, my dogs do as well. There are two Great Danes who live with us and travel with us. So far so good.

    Great tips!! We are an Airstream Interstate 24' class B. Diesel vs gas RV is a big deal too. We are Mercedes Sprinter turbo diesel: mpg from 16-21mpg unless we're towing our 4300k# Jeep then 14mpg!! That's still great! We looked at every combination RV you discussed. We attended rv shows for 2 YEARS before deciding for many of the reasons you mentioned. 👍 the National/state park 25' limit was also a factor for us!👍 Additionally we love the heritage luxury of the Airstream brand. We love our rv for 3-4 day trips or a just a one night trip to Montery or Napa just to have dinner. We even parallel park it in downtown Carmel for dinner!! 😋🍷🥩 Perfect for 2 adults and 2 small dogs with a KING size bed. Depending on where we're traveling to, we either tow our 2 door Jeep ( my favorite going offroading!!) our boat, or our Ironhorse trailer with our mud/snow E bikes and much more like our Pit Barrel Cooker (becausewe like cooking for groups)! All that said, we wouldn't full time in it. Your videos are great. I'm sharing your channel with our friends who are newbies! Keep on!!

    I have a 21.5 travel trailer, and absolutely love it. i saw your video about your accident before I bought it. That must have been terrifying. I agree that you have to take responsibility for knowing everything about your camper, so I have taken your advice, and tried to learn as much as possible when we first purchased it, but I learn new things each time I tow.
    I have a weight distribution hitch with anti-sway, and I have found that it's easy to tow (relatively small camper), and hitch/un-hitch. So happy with my choice! Thanks for all the information!!

    There are also towing campers for motorcycles as well as ordinary street bicycles. Some of the super expensive Class A campers have literal garages built into their tail end section known as a toy hauler or in the center underneath the living space. Some toy haulers are also units that you tow. On the fringe side of things are house boat Class A campers that can transition from land to water and back again from boat ramps. If you're an explorer there are expedition types of motor homes that are among the most ruggedly built for trips that may last months or years totally off grid.

    Good video! I had a truck camper and I did love it. I didn’t take it off but had I kept it longer I may have? After spending the summer in NM during monsoon season, had I taken it off I’m sure she would have rolled in the high winds, the truck kept her tied down but it was shaking a lot during high winds. I had a 11.5 Lance offering fully contained with shower and extra space in the kitchen for cooking. The disadvantage was had to have a 1 ton dually 8 ft box so she ate gas getting around 9 to the gallon. Six tires to replace instead of 4. They are also not the easiest trucks to find, used. New they are really expensive and my choice for living on the road is less is more! The high clearance was good for off road but you still have to be careful as it’s high profile and top heavy. It was ok for me being a solo woman but eventually I knew I would like a couch or comfortable chair to lounge in, having only a dinette to sit at and the cushions aren’t all that comfortable after extended sitting, and there was no extra room for even a smaller chair. I sold it and have grounded for a season. If I were to go out again( I am peeking at campers) but still not sure what yet. A class b van seems like the good fit having a sofa/bed but I wonder if over time I would feel cramped again? I also had someone knock on my door one night and they were not there to tell me I was parked in a private zone. I had no way to get to my truck and luckily they left, no harm but it made me think more, being solo woman for safety reasons. I like the idea crawl out of bed and get in the seat and go if my safety is being compromised. I like class c, far as amenities but again you’re driving high profile rig and in winds it’s a white knuckle nightmare. I have also heard they are built very cheap, unlike the truck campers?? They rattle apart going down the road. So a smaller 5th wheel might be where I land?! If I could find a 19 foot scamp fifth wheel, I’d be on the road yesterday. They can be pulled with a half ton or smaller and are built to last. Fiberglass with one seam so less chance for leaks and far less maintenance. They are a rare find and sold 10 minutes after advertised. They are easy to tow, less chance of sway or fish tailing and easy to unhook and have a vehicle to drive off camp. Have a small private bedroom, not a lot of space for storage but that’s what the extended cab is for...my ‘basement’ as I called it. Living a more minimalist life with less stuff is my way to live. If I have to have all kinds of amenities, why leave a home, but that again is personal choice? I have watched many u tubes of full timer RVers and see they sell often to find the right fit? It’s good to hear from others pros and cons, but ultimately it comes down to what one individually likes and it may take a few to find the right fit. All worth it to be out there living a life many only dream of doing...time will tell for me. Thx Liz, very informative video!

      So glad you are doing the research and really thinking things through. If I were solo again I would have the same thoughts. I LOVE truck campers but they just aren't big enoubh. I've owned a camper van and a couple Class C's, but they have their drawbacks as you mentioned. I really loved my little fifth wheel bc I didn't have to break camp whenever I wanted to go to the grocery. I found with the van I missed out on exploring bc it was just too cumbersome. Here's a tour of my fifth wheel, perfect for solo travel! ua-cam.com/video/PFAZY8PHyDo/v-deo.html

      @@LizAmazing Wow, what a beautiful fifth wheel Liz! I could definitely see myself living in that. I know, as you mentioned some things you would change and now of course, you have a ‘handy man’ for some things a woman contemplates doing or changing. I wanted to replace my truck camper faucet in the kitchen. It was an older one and short so hard to fill pitchers, etc. upon pondering all the lines were plastic and it being older I learned to live with it as I was concerned of causing a crack in brittle older lines. A lot of things I did fix, pained the whole interior and replace circuit panels and easier things I didn’t think I could do but was so happy when I did and yay...hot water again. I am steering more toward a smaller fifth wheel upon looking at other u tubes and I would like a 1/2 to to 3/4 ton so it would be smaller than this one. I agree totally on the back window!!! One thing I did love about my Lance was all the windows it did have I even had a front window over the cab bad...but higher probability for rocks and leaks. So many things to consider but I know if and when the time arises the right rig will come. Thank you for responding and maybe one day I will meet you both ‘ on the road’
      God Bless and be safe.

    Another great video. I can't even imagine having to run a generator while going down the road to keep it cool! Ick! I think Class B or B+ should meet my needs initially. I'm not interested in boondocking unless I'm following someone else or maybe joined a caravan. Maybe one day when I retire, but I'm still going to be working behind a computer for at least another 10 years. I have to hover around cities, need a full-time Internet connection, and I don't want to be limited where I can park. Funny thing, I asked an RV Dealer (online) about an 18' Travato sitting on their lot and said I'd come by to look at it on another day. I drove (30 minutes) up to the lot, parked right in front of their office, saw at least 3 blue shirts (making sure a large class A and 5th wheel was being hauled out accurately), they were incredibly busy(?), and I walked around about 15 minutes (sound of crickets). The doors (to campers) were all locked. I walked back to my car and left. Not one person (except a customer with a salesperson asking to pet my dog Drogo) said boo. Guess the year is not deep enough into the end.

    • @LizAmazing
      @LizAmazing  4 роки тому

      ConnieMacks Well that’s terrible about that Rv dealer! I think many have become lazy since the market was so hot. From what I’ve heard, it’s cooling off some. I am not sure if that’s true or not. My experience has been the bigger dealers have it going on- organized, attentive to customers, fast and efficient repair service. You would only need to run the generator while driving if you have passengers sitting in the living area- as it will get hot. For you driving, the dash air will be fine. But if you stop to have lunch on a hot day, you will need to turn in the generator for AC. But I think a Class B is a good option if you need to be urban. You’re way more nimble! Or if you are not going to be moving from place to place that often, then something you tow. Happy shopping!

    Nice overview Liz. We had our 1999 Class A 35' Itasca Suncruiser for 19 years and now have a 35' 2017 Newmar Canyon Star. Both are Ford V10 gas models and average 5 to 6 mpg while towing our Jeep Grand Cherokee, not the 2 to 5 you mention about 6 minutes into your video. They have been quite easy to drive but strong cross-winds are a hazard. Registration and insurance was much less with our older RV! We have a 2000 Roadtrek 200 (B+) that is perfect for us. We have always traveled in a van of some kind but this is out first motorhome. Travel 10 months a year and then visit the kids for Thanksgiving and Christmas, rinse, repeat. It has a lot of storage for its' size. A permanent bed in the back so no put away and setup. Most of our time is spent outdoors except for inclement weather. With the bed in the back (with TV and computer) and a TV up front (with a computer), we have spent three days inside waiting for weather to clear.
    We boondock (with solar) and very rarely have to run the generator and can stay a week in one place before the black tank is full and the fridge is getting empty. Every now and then we will go to a campground to take care of the essentials but find them noisy and crowded. When we camp with friends that have larger rigs, we are relegated to camping in larger open and easily accessible spots because they can't get near where we usually like to camp. We follow two tracks a lot.

    • @LizAmazing
      @LizAmazing  4 роки тому

      Sounds like you have a great setup-- I had a 21' Chinook camper van that was just too small to fulltime in with my dog and I. Rainy days were the worst! But I sure loved the convenience of being able to go anywhere, stay anywhere! You must have a larger fresh water tank than most to be able to last a week. I've boondocked with other Roadtreks and always heard that fresh water holding tank was not big enough.

    • @bandsee6263
      @bandsee6263 4 роки тому

      @@LizAmazing It has 35 gallons fresh, 27 gallons grey. The black tank is the problem, 12 gallons. We do carry an additional 7 gallons in a tote but rarely need it. Navy showers stretch the water and water conservation for the kitchen too. One pot or pan meals are the norm with paper plates and bowls. The smaller Roadtreks have much smaller tanks. It took a year of research before we settled on this one. Newer ones started leaving stuff off to save money.

    I have had a TT and a truck camper. I sold the TT because I bought a boat and of course couldn't drive them both. I was a little intimidated by the truck camper at first but after my first trip I loved it. But I did have to take it off when I took the boat because I didn't like launching the boat with it on, though I did a few times. It is a hassle getting it back on (taking it off is the easy part!) but it got easier over time. I had it for over nine years but it became harder as I aged to get up into the overhead bed and also into the camper itself when loaded on the truck so I sold it last year. I have been researching getting a Class C since I still have the boat, though I'm not sure I want to launch it with the Class C, as I would have to pack up every time I needed to launch the boat. I found your video so interesting and am glad I found it! Thank you!

      Hi Meri! So glad you enjoyed this video. People do tow in tandem but I don't have the nerve for that. But even with a camper van you would have to pack everything up to be sure everything stays put for the boat ramp. I trust you will find the right setup that allows you to camp and to boat. Heck, there's even some pretty impressive inflatables out there. Of course, you would still need room to store it. Another option, if you have a John boat or something not too big, is to get one of those systems that will lift your boat up on to the bed and overhang the cab of your pickup truck. That way you could still tow a travel trailer. Best of luck!

    Great video Liz! I love how you broke everything down into different categories of RV. One thing I dislike about my trailer is the smell. It is kind of an acrid odor and I'm not sure where it is coming from...seat cushions, drapes, or even walls and insulation. I've heard that formaldehyde is used in the manufacturing of RVs, but I am not sure if this is the problem. Have you had that experience and if so, how did you eliminate the odor?

      two things come to mind...mould and black tank. rvers say its not if its when that water enters a trailer as its inevitable that all rvs leak in the rain as some point. you can get a wet meter from amazon its a hand held unit that detects moisture, turn it on n aim it at all areas of the rv...when the alarm or gauge elevates you know where the mould n rot is so you can tear it out n have that section rebuilt and resealed. as for the black tank there are youtube sites that have plenty of solutions for that or use a compost cedar shavings toilet much easier to empty n enviro friendly. no tank to clean or dump site necessary ...just like taking out the trash!

    The only thing I can add is that even with a good anti-sway hitch a 'bumper pull' can be downright scary to drive in crosswind conditions. 5th Wheels are still susceptible to crosswinds but less so because the pin weight is positioned over the rear axle of the tow vehicle.

    • @LizAmazing
      @LizAmazing  4 роки тому

      Paul Baldassarre That’s a good point. Crosswinds are also a factor when driving a Class B- I struggled to keep mine in the lane when driving across the West. Also a problem when big trucks passed. Are you planning to get a 5er?

    Excellent video - watched it several times over the months! Actually one of best - with on the road examples of each and pros and cons. When you said some parks limit the size to 25', is that the trailer only or inclusive of the hitch? Also, I presume if you have a small fifth wheel attached to the bed of your truck, the 25' would be the trailer only?

    • @LizAmazing
      @LizAmazing  4 роки тому +1

      Yay, so good to hear! This video took me probably the most time than any other video I have created. There really is a lot to talk about and a lot to consider when buying a camper and figuring out what type is best.
      When the parks say 25' limit (or 30' or whatever) that is the maximum total length that will fit in the space. If your trailer is 25' you can fit in one, but then will likely need to find a place to park your tow vehicle. Some sites have a place where you can pull in next to the trailer. Others have designated parking lots that are sometimes a good distance away from your site.
      Our current trailer is a 35' fifth wheel but we tell the campground (or when booking online) that we are 38' because of the bike rack on the back. Also, if we have a choice, we will go for the longest site so that we don't have to try and squeeze our truck in sideways.

    Hi Liz, I enjoyed your videos.....Especially the EBike vid, I also embraced the EMTB life and love it. I own a Class A Diesel Pusher, and absolutely love it, I’ve owned 4it RV’s in the past, with my last one being a 32 Ft Bumper Tow. I’ve looked at various set ups before deciding on a Class A. I looked at a fifth wheel but the issue there is that to live full time you need to make sure that you get a good quality unit, cheaper ones just don’t last. An average Fifth Wheel set up will cost about 75 to 100 thousand then you need a truck to tow it......Needs to be big enough to handle the Unit, preferably a 1 ton truck.....Diesel and should be a dualy for stability, this will run approximately 80 to 100 grand also....Units are so big now that anything else is dangerous. You also need to ensure that your not overweight.....This is a huge issue as a Fifth Wheels has a lot of storage but it cannot be loaded fully as it will be overweight.....I literally took 5 years and watched a lot of UA-cam videos before deciding and in my opinion a Class A Diesel Pusher is the way to go.....It actually comes out cheaper over all than a Fifth Wheel and much easier to maneuver and park....As I said, only my opinion. Take care.....

    • @LizAmazing
      @LizAmazing  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Gus! Sounds like you did your research well. And you are absolutely correct about the Class A diesel pushers. Paul and I intended to buy a Class A (instead of our new fifth wheel, trading in the one shown in this video) but could not make the numbers work for us. He's 70 and the insurance, oh man, was much higher when comparing fifth wheels to Class As, plus the extra fuel consumption. And then the toad- I assume you are also towing something? We do like the nimbleness of Class As and still talk about getting one someday.
      So we ended up with a Solitude which is is a couple steps up from the Reflection fifth wheel. It will last longer and we have our weight and towing capacities (slightly) within specs.
      Glad you have an EMTB, too! Paul and I would love to go riding with you sometime. If you haven't already, check out our bike channel: UA-cam.com/AmazingBikeRides

I also envy Paul's skills... sounds like you can fix anything :) Here is my question: Have you experienced any difficulty finding campground with your 36' fifth wheel? I'm aiming for a 36' but concerned that i might be limited in my choices of campgrounds. Thank you for all that you are sharing with us. Kind regards, Pierre-Michael.

    • @LizAmazing
      @LizAmazing  3 роки тому

      Hello Pierre-Michael! First of all, thanks SO much for your kind words about our channel and videos! Going over 27' pretty much knocks you out of all national park campgrounds (with some exceptions) now that we are 35', we will also likely not fit in many state park campgrounds. Since we are fulltime, this is not a consideration for us. We can stay outside a national park and drive just our truck into the parks. This is because of being fulltime and thus having not having the time constraints of people on vacation.
      We think smaller more nimble rigs (I started out in a camper van) are the way to go if time is a factor and you need to get right into national parks, or want to boondock.
      We are Thousand Trails members and know of only ONE park of their 100+ in the system that cannot accommodate us. And that is Oakzanita. There may be others in the northeast, which I've heard can have some tight campgrounds. You can try calling around to campgrounds in areas you'd like to visit.
      Short answer: no problems!
      And here is our video about Thousand Trails if you haven't seen it. We camp at resorts for next to nothing! ua-cam.com/video/cbZC97DWFe8/v-deo.html

    Thank you for your video! I am a single female p/t camper, with my young daughter and our dogs. I currently have a 25S' Trail Sport TT. I previously had a 21 'Jayco Qwest TT, which was way too small for longer stays of 3-4 weeks. I am only 50, but am having a lot of health and mobility issues, so I want something easier to connect/tow and set up, and preferably something with more room. I am also eligible to retire in 5 years, and want to be able to live in my RV for at least half the year at that time. I was thinking that a motorhome might be my best option, however I've recently been considering buying a truck, so I could go with a fifth wheel. There are so many awesome floor plans that I love. I was worried that maybe a 5thW might be too hard to drive, so I'm relieved to hear you say its actually easier. Do you have any tips on what type of truck to get? Being that I dont yet have a 5thW, I want to make sure I get one that will leave me a lot of options for trailers within my weight class.

    • @LizAmazing
      @LizAmazing  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Connie! Definitely get the fifth wheel first, or at least decide on it before getting the truck. And then get more truck than you need for the camper so it will not overwork the truck. This is one instance where you need to put the cart before the horse! And I love 5th wheels better than Class A’s bc you get deeper slides and higher ceilings so they def feel more roomy.

    As a single person, I feel much safer knowing I can just drive off when I want to, rather than having to go outside to get into a truck that tows a trailer. I have a vintage Toyota Mini Cruiser, low mileage, in great condition, very inexpensive, and excellent gas mileage. After buying it, I discovered there is an RV club for Mini Cruiser owners; the members are very enthusiastic about every aspect of RV Mini Cruiser ownership. Eventually, I would like an Airstream big enough to live in, after down sizing. But, for occasional camping, or overnight trips what I have works well for now. Although, they are supposed to be large enough for a family of two adults, and two small children, truth is, there seems to be just enough space for one person plus a small dog. Fore me, more than that would seem crowded, as I like to take along hobbies to do in the evenings. Having a separate bedroom, and larger bathroom and kitchen areas would be an advantage. The shower basically fits a two year old child, rather than average sized adult. I use the over cab space for storage, rather than as a bed. It is true that being short enough to park in a regular-sized parking space can be an advantage, especially in State and National Parks. Purchase price, insurance, fuel and up-keep, are all minimal on this RV, making it a great way to 'test the waters' , or decide if RVing is for you, or not. And, the Toyota engine makes it very reliable, albeit not enough power if you like to speed down the freeways.

    Rented a C, hated it. Way too small.
    Borrowed a B and being 6 '4" tall and preferring a bench seat and table yo eat at and the loss of some room that is available in the A made it a non- contender.
    As far as class A, a couple of deal breakers from me were the lack of bench style seating for dining table.
    Non- walk around queen bed.
    Not having a separate toilet.
    It seems all of them are lost under 34 feet.
    We don't west coast and so far all the state parks from Indiana southward allow 34' RV's.
    The size is not bad to drive, but I drive some very large trucks...up to semi's so my view may be skewed a bit.
    As far as gas mileage, we just drove the mountains through NC, Ky, TN and Ga and average almost 7 mpg while pulling an HHR on a dolly.
    As far as hauling a car around?
    We saw no difference in hauling a trailer vs a car with the exception that we are in a comfy and easy to move about "home" with our dogs and with no crowding or cramping like a pick up truck would be...to us.

    Wich RV should i buy? I'm inclined to a camper van or a class C.
    TY

      Hi Paulo!
      In Europe you need something small and nimble. I'd get a camper van for sure. Sounds like a fabulous adventure!!! Have fun and take lots of photos.

    Is that a fifth wheel hitch or gooseneck?

    • @LizAmazing
      @LizAmazing  3 роки тому

      It is a fifth wheel hitch with an Andersen Ultimate hitch. More here: ua-cam.com/video/LB5Z8IPXtug/v-deo.html
      I don't think it would be classified as a gooseneck but I'm not sure. Let me know if you know.

    Class B is not meant to live in it full time... it's for weekend getaway.... Class A is good for across the country roadtrip and long distance journey.... my favorite part of Class A is the panoramic view on the road.... the view is breathless..... plus, it's fully habitable and can take the place of hotel room....

    • @LizAmazing
      @LizAmazing  4 роки тому +1

      Have met a lot of people who live in their Class B's full time. Definitely not for me. I did it for five months in a Chinook camper van and that was more than enough!
      Class A's are certainly the way to go: you are nimble, hitching a car up is easy. I love those big front windows, too. Happy trails to you- hope to meet you in a campground someday!

    The elephant in the room that no one ever seems to address, is the massive depreciation all of these categories of RV's undergo. Even with careful shopping and selecting a nearly-new used model, that's already passed the steepest part of the depreciation curve, you're still talking about six to seven percent per year depreciation. Does everyone just accept this as cost of admission to the nomadic lifestyle. If you're trying to live a frugal lifestyle and save for retirement, it's tough while the roof over your head is leaking money the entire time you own it.

    • @LizAmazing
      @LizAmazing  3 роки тому +1

      Good point. We and many others still find it cheaper than living in a house. There are a couple ways to make this life frugal, one is to set up your address in a state where you don't pay income taxes and the insurance and health costs are low. Here's our video about that: ua-cam.com/video/PGRyDN1SVu4/v-deo.html
      The other consideration and it's a biggie is keeping your "rent" low. Even if you rent monthly or seasonally you'll be spending $500-600 a month easily. And most people choose this life so they can travel. We do it for an average of under $150 a month. Here's how: ua-cam.com/video/cbZC97DWFe8/v-deo.html

      @@LizAmazing We still have 2 yrs before early retirement. We're thinking mid 70's GMC. We like the driving ability on that GMC and we're going to do the build out as there is so much wasted space. Plus we see that most of what we like is for vacationing only. They're reasonably priced for the 1st time out the gate👍

    Is the 5th wheel easier to backup than a pull behind trailer?

    Travel trailers are bad for newbies....it's so stressful if you're new to hauling and not good for tight road....if you travel to a dead-end, you're in big trouble trying back out or turn around.... I stick with a small Class A motorhome....

    • @LizAmazing
      @LizAmazing  4 роки тому

      Wise words there. Yes, travel trailers are popular because they are often cheap and light. I actually totaled a travel trailer and the truck I was towing it with. Story here: ua-cam.com/video/DKW7chy9i9Q/v-deo.html

    We're only going to be on this earth for a short time, so when I do decide to hit the road, and i'll be solo, I'm going to get a nice 45 foot used 5 to 8 yr old Prevost Diesel Pusher Motor coach, and if I do decide to stay somewhere for a week or more and I'm not planning at all to tow any vehicle, I'm just going to rent a small car wherever I'm at to get around, most car rental agencies will bring the car to you and pick it back from you, with the money that I save in paying for more fuel towing a car then the extra insurance and up keep on another vehicle, cheaper to rent a car if I really have to, or before I hit any campground I'll make sure that I stop and stock up on everything I need and a lot of times you'll end up meeting someone at a campground who has a car and for a few dollars if you need to go to a store they would more than likely give you a ride.

      Sounds like a good plan! Let me know how it goes. I’ve been on the road solo for over a year. Cactus Gardens RV Park offers a shuttle service so that would be ideal. National Parks will be more challenging as they tend to be remote. Also your Class A will be too long to stay in the park itself. Again, a shuttle service may help. When I stayed at Yosemite Lakes they had one that worked in the busy season. Happy travels!

      So sorry for your loss of your wife. I know it's got to be so hard. You are doing the right thing by being sure you have something to look forward to, such as camping and fishing. I find ALL states to be friendly. I am from Kentucky and relate better to southern folks, I think. But truly I have been on the road since 2018 and find campgrounds full of friendly happy people.
