Good info there, with the fuel check valve there the torque is important. we had the pressure gauge on the fuel and slowly torqued the valve up and over torqued and the psi would change, set at spec. it is correct psi. A trick with the viscus damper is take the temp with a temp gun before starting, cold engine then run for 5 mins and take the temp, it should be warmer then the first temp reading due to the internal ring moving through the fluid inside the damper, if the fluid has gone bad (hard) there is no temp change. We change them at 800,000 km/500,000 mi as precaution to save crank.

It is a honor for a tech, when a customer request you and you only. Back in the day I had a few out of state customers. I dislike checking fuel psi at the quick disconnect port. The psi is before secondary fuel filter and you do not get a true reading of cylinder head psi. I have done this a few times when I just can't fuel psi where I like it. I take the 75 lb regulator apart and give the spring a little pull. I have also seen people use the 100 lb regulator out of a REGEN engine. I have never tried that, afraid of blowing EUI seals out. Also on older FTP taken that spring out and give it a pull as well. Any time I have the front damper off, I try and talk the customer into replacing the front seal. I also like to data log and do my high speed five cylinder cut out test and see what RPM's each cylinder will hold. Fan off, A/C off, Air compressor off.
Don't worry, Josh - _damper_ is the proper term everywhere. Because it _damps_ the vibrations. Same as how a "shock absorber" is actually also a damper (and it's the spring that actually absorbs the shock.) A dampener would be something that makes things wet. 😁

Thank you for explaining the why you do things. I am not surprised someone would drive from Texas it is hard to find a good tech much less a great tech. Most of the auto techs in my area closed over the plague time and there is no one I have tried that I trust. I am always surprised that techs do not notice the camera on the windshield and the phone calls, etc in my vehicle while being serviced are sad to very funny. My vehicles are older and the dealership keeps busy on new vehicles and do not want to work on older rusted vehicles. Stay safe and healthy, thanks for the education again.
CAT 314D Serpentine Fan Belt. Took 1hr to try by oneself, then took another hr with 2 people - One spinning the crankshaft and feeding the belt on the pulley. CAT made 2 belts - One was about 1/2" longer. I had the longer one and still took 2 people to install. Very limited space for 1 hand / arm & belt felt it was still approx 1/4" too short to fit quickly. Cursing words flew around like normal vernacular ;)
It’s had to find strait worker. You putting out the process. And the way you handle the issues. Is like a interview. Awesome. I did a year at a dealership. I retired from the military after 5 tours. Injuries took me out. But there are real turds.
Good mechanics/shops are hard to find. I’d drive to you in a heartbeat!! Back in the day I had a 3406E and nursed it with blown liners from Iowa to buffalo, back to nampa id, to get it to my mechanic.
Learned the cruise control trick on the first Detroit I drove. I was told the oil pressure would drop so low at idle it would die. So raise it off idle and keep the oil pressure up.
There's also a fuel bypass valve in the engine mounted fuel filter head. As for that pump spring, that's a light spring. Stretching it an inch and putting it back in does the same thing. But, given the likely age/miles on the pump, I've had them go bad at 250k miles before. Anything over 400k, for sure replace it. Not much more money than replacing the pump, after core is returned.
Massive thumbs up mate, as an Australian guy I have never ever heard the word "Dampner" until I started watching US mechanic content and I can say that only in the US have I ever heard anyone say that word; the rest of the world calls it "Damper". "Dampner" is not a real word
In the US, nobody says Damper in my experience. I remember thinking Damper was a weird word the first time I heard it. Everyone looks at me weird when I say it.
I consider the host of this channel to be a premier source of mechanical knowledge in the 57 years of my lifetime. Due to lack of financial resources I've often had to be my own mechanic involuntarily. Not that it does Josh any favors, but it does give me a little bit of solace that I'm not the only one that sees red when trying to do what seems to be simple mechanical tasks that turn into trying to move the earth type of headache.
I've followed your channel for years, had an MXS, and now a BXS. I shimmed my Mxs and fixed this problem. But due to the style plug in the bxs it is impossible, and it's been fighting me. I just replaced the transfer pump and it got better, but have NEVER known of the regulator by the filter housing. I literally changed my pump yesterday and this video couldn't have been better timed! You do us acert owners a great service and on that note! Thank you for all you do, it's immensely helpful!
@@AdeptApe so I've changed all my sensors fuel temp, barometric, intake air temp, intake manifold pressure, iva oil pressure, iva solenoid, new ivav harness, new motor harness, diverter solenoid. Thank you for putting the part # for the fuel transfer pump spring. My local Cat dealer told me I had buy a whole new fuel pump. Trying to fix a only start with ether issue. Has to be fuel delivery... I think?
I bought a 2003 International 9200 with the 6NZ Cat-15 because of you and your videos on this channel. The crankshaft had seized the 5th piston and I am having it rebuilt. Hopefully it will be my last truck to retirement. Thanks for your informative videos!
I think I'm going to pull the radiator on my 387 lol. Not much room at all . I'm going to install Pittsburgh powers mercury filled balancer along with a new damper. My damper is originally with 1.4 million on it . Mine has a vibration under heavy load also so it's time before I break the crank lol. Good video.
On the destruction you said that " it pretty much destroyed the piston " . NO it absolutely, positively, with out a doubt Destroyed the piston. Years ago I had a 3208 in a 225 backhoe that got overheated. Each head had ¼ inch wide cracks, and when I pulled the rings off the pistons I was able to twist them like bailing wire. I kept on of them for years to show, I had 8 complete turns on that ring. 2 new heads, new rings, (well complete overhaul used the same pistons) and put it back to work.
One trick that might have made installing the hard to access plug easier is to cut a section out of a correct size allen wrench, slide a ratchet spanner over it and push on the end with your fingers or lever bar while turning the spanner
That’s the benefit of trucking. If you find a good shop or mechanic you can always book a load to go there. Have you publicly announced which location you work at. I wouldn’t mind having the valves set on my C-12 and the Allison transmission serviced. It’s a motor home so you might not want to touch that. 😂😂
Every time I get a bad vibration in my 379, it usually ends up being a bad engine mount. Either the bolts backed out of the bell housing mounts or the rubber biscuits are shot. The poly insulators seem to last better. The tell tale is that taking corners will increase or decrease the vibration.
Might have to send you some destructions for your videos. Last week pulled a 3306 head and the block was warped and the liners were uneven. The deck plate was a bow shape LOL. 3516 pulled the head to find a hole in the piston from a dropped valve. I have seen a lot of very destroyed CATs
Hello, I have a C12 Caterpillar, and I have a problem with the injectors, where the spring is, the diesel returns, and the oil mixes with the diesel, and I would like to know what the diesel pressure is in the injectors, the pump has already been changed of the dissel and the pressure, and it cannot be fixed, very good video, 👍
The viscous dampers do slowly die over a very long time. But the rubber dampers on gas engines work until the rubber just disintegrates with the inner and outer part of the harmonic balancer banging away at each other. The customers come in thinking the poor running, noisy engine is a goner.
Hey get the 1/2 12 volt Milwaukee it's small and it packs a punch my tool guy let me borrow one to work on my dodge and it was amazing so I bought it I use it for everything big now bc it's light and small and if u put the 6 Amp battery on it makes it even better
According to Bruce @ Pittsburgh Power, the vibration damper should be changed at 400-500K miles. The silicone fluid the inner ring slips around, gets hard. The ring can no longer move independently so the it can’t dampen vibrations.
Thanks for another great video bro. You are one if not the best 🐱 mechanic out here today. I appreciate all of the knowledge and awesome videos. Keep it up. Am always following you. 💯💯
Cats don’t like air in the fuel. Get a AirDog Champ, they take out all the air and you get an even fuel spray which means more power because of the better combustion. 😊
Man do I know about seeing red. I’ve had my wife watching me cuss and yell, her comment was and you love this. Well I do but on occasion I do get frustrated. So I know where your coming from. I just started working on diesels because I’ve owned a few and currently I bought a motorhome with a Cummins engine. Had to put on a injection pump and there was no room, you know the rest,
Josh, did the customer give you any feedback on the power, if he noticed any increase in power. I've changed out the pump and the pressure regulator on a couple of Petes ( 3406E and C15 MXS ) in the past as they were well used trucks before they were in my hands and the E series started loosing prime and turned out to be the worn pump/seal but I had no gauge at the time to check the before and after pressure delivery but did notice my fuel restriction gauge went up a bit as the new pump could actually suck properly. The C15 on the other hand was pulsing the dash gauge and test gauge and after replacing the pump that issue was gone. The long and short, those pumps don't last forever and after the frustration you had getting to that spring you might opt to put in a new pump in the future as that is a horrible place to work, right beside the frame and all the wiring stuffed into the frame channel, I totally understood your red screen ! LOL.
I really enjoyed watching your videos, please I want to ask what was the engine doing before you decide to replace the damper and can the problems also applies or happen to 2500 series Perkins generator?
a damper is used as a dampener of vibrations. ones a verb the other an adjective. vibration dampening or dampener is a description of what it does. Damper is what it is.
That owners are prepare to travel a substantial distance for your services speaks to how hard it is to find somebody that you can trust not to rip you off. It took me 30 years to find motor services that I trust. Oddly its run by a guy who I first met as a spotty teenager hanging out in his Dad's coal yard. Hes so busy thatr he doesnt need to invent faults and for jobs he thinks someone else would do better he refers you to them.

Oh boy I'm glad I'm not the only one seeing red when work on truck😏
Very well done buddy. You have a way of explaining that is relaxing yet concise. Also love the lengthy videos like this one. Cheers!
Big thanks for the video. I have the same engine and same problem. Sounds like some good maintenance to start out with, my truck has over a million miles.
I have to say your work is spot on people come a long way for you to work on there trucks just says something about you work
You are the Ape Man !
I am the Walrus Coo Coo Ka-Chooo
It’s also said that an old damper is the contributing factor, leading to a broken crank shaft.
Imagine that, the torsional vibration under load!
Stay safe and healthy, thanks for the education again.
thank you for your endless impressive videos, you are very inspiring
Great video !! Great diagnosis and workmanship too !! Love your humor too, take care.
Thanks 👍🏽
always a joy to see your spirit animal (the goat) in action
There is nothing worse than putting in a spring loaded check valve one handed in a tight space! I've invented new cuss words doing that job.
That was some great info Josh! Thanks a lot for sharing some of your knowledge!
@@AdeptApe amazing how different the US is to the rest of the world
Most applications in America call it a “Dampener”
@@mtvrchannel3051 Interesting, Must be a US only word
Thank for watching the videos Chris and thanks for keeping those Cats running.
@@AdeptApe so I've changed all my sensors fuel temp, barometric, intake air temp, intake manifold pressure, iva oil pressure, iva solenoid, new ivav harness, new motor harness, diverter solenoid. Still skipping, it only does it when above 175 coolant temperature. Like skips until it picks up fuel and then runs fine until you get out of the throttle like coasting then repeats, when weather temp is below 60 degrees it never acts up at all! It loves the winter months. Any thoughts I'm at my end, and really don't know what to think. No check engine codes at all.....
@@chrisarcher4098 Have seen EUI's fail hot. When engine cools down start hitting again. Most of the time it is five or six EUI. I put the truck on dyno and load it down until misfire starts, use ET to locate which EUI has failed. Right now a EUI from Cat is month's out.
@@johngoldsmith6629 that's exactly what it is doing, when you say EUI you're referring to the injector right? I was definitely wanting to get it onto a dyno very soon. I've covered all other basis.
@@chrisarcher4098 Yes injector, twin turbo part number 10R1273, if I recall and get a new hold down bolt 8S9191. Single fuel tank or dual?
knackered Dampers destroy crankshafts all the time........good call that the customer knew something was wrong, and the issue was corrected. If something sounds or feels wrong, it usually is.
Any good mechanic can relate to seeing red. I sure was yesterday working on my 3126 (well, adding electric fans to the charge air cooler as part of my electric fan conversion in my RV). Great video!
Thank you for putting the part # for the fuel transfer pump spring. My local Cat dealer told me I had buy a whole new fuel pump.
Trying to fix a only start with ether issue. Has to be fuel delivery... I think?
Thank you for explaining your evaluation of dampers
Hey men great video. My truck dose the same thing under a load I have a MXS. Definitely going to look in to it. Thank you keep them coming.
I bought a 2003 International 9200 with the 6NZ Cat-15 because of you and your videos on this channel. The crankshaft had seized the 5th piston and I am having it rebuilt. Hopefully it will be my last truck to retirement. Thanks for your informative videos!
Those are great engines, hopefully it'll give you lots of happy miles.
Had a 972 roll into the shop with your sticker on the side this week. Somehow, they cracked the transfer case.
Thank you very much brother God bless thank you for the pointers you are awesome
Good video.
Great Job Josh!! I will pay you a visit if I ever come your way. Stay blessed
Excellent work, thank you for sharing your knowledge, 👍👍🚛
cool trick on raising the RPM. My Ram Cummins has that same feature coincidentally
One trick that might have made installing the hard to access plug easier is to cut a section out of a correct size allen wrench, slide a ratchet spanner over it and push on the end with your fingers or lever bar while turning the spanner
Save the extra threaded rod that you cut off when installing a new brake can. It works great for installing the damper
do those dampers come off easy are do you need a pulley thank you for your time
@@serpentrae they come right off ez
@@CTX50 thank you much appreciated, stay strong
I have that same CP impact! It's a great little unit
I thought you were in boise lol we drive a simi past your shop going to Portland from Kansas city. We love your show and cats we got a 3406b
👍🏻 Nice finds. Enjoyed the video
Detroit and Cummins also call it a damper. Pickup trucks also has front end steering parts called dampers. I don’t know why I hear dampener so much.
I'm gonna assume Josh didn't even bother to put in his mic when installing that sucker which means we missed out on some entertainment
Thanks for what you doin . Looks like I got the same issue.
Thumbs up, great video, bring the I Do Cars guy in on the scored piston story?
The red…….. I caught myself laughing instead of sharing the frustration. Well done.
Awesome content
Thoroughly enjoy watching
Great detail
Got my damper from Bruce. Opted for the added balancer also. Huge difference!
What's wrong with the damper ? Why it needs to be replaced? Thank you for the nice work
Thanks for another great video bro. You are one if not the best 🐱 mechanic out here today. I appreciate all of the knowledge and awesome videos. Keep it up. Am always following you. 💯💯
Best channel on UA-cam!
I'm glad you think that, I'm certainly not claiming that though.
Had to put on a injection pump and there was no room, you know the rest,
How about giving some part #s like T-Pump spring kit
Thx
Does the transfer pump spring the same on the c13? If so can you link the part number or where to purchase
Oh, I wish there was audio during the red, haha
Great video
Really enjoy watching
Helps me understand my 6nz
That owners are prepare to travel a substantial distance for your services speaks to how hard it is to find somebody that you can trust not to rip you off. It took me 30 years to find motor services that I trust. Oddly its run by a guy who I first met as a spotty teenager hanging out in his Dad's coal yard. Hes so busy thatr he doesnt need to invent faults and for jobs he thinks someone else would do better he refers you to them.
What causes a fuel knock and the fuel out of the return from the back of the head after a complete rebuild. Working on a cat 6nz
Great job on making these videos! Always great help and information.
What part number is for regulator and o-ring? I did see the one for the spring on the package. I'm currently experiencing the same symptoms.
Thanks and look forward to more videos.
Josh u got the part number for the valve and seal
should the pressure gauge hold pressure after you shut the engine off? which check valve is involved?
Just torque while in gear and it holds fine
What ever happened to torquing in sequence? To not only get the proper final torque but to tighten something up evenly. Say 50, 125, 200 ft/lbs.
What would be the odds of having you do a set of up pipes on my '95 7.3? I live in Oregon
Was he loosing power as well? I have tbe same problem, it almost acts as if it was being starved of fuel.
Thanks 🙏🏼 going to fix my 550 kw generator I’m in Haiti 🇭🇹 the generator can go one day working non stop and two time a day it will stop working code low pressure going to verify the fuel pressure then do your step then after my plan is to replace the fuel sensor
Man you a Dam good man for maken these video thank u
Thank you Billy.
Josh, What is on the trailer beside you during captains log? Yours?
