04:23 how dare you?!?
Who let you in ? Lol
Gretta is that you, Jk what's up Peg?
You know It's a good channel when peg is watching.. P.S. always great content...
Two of my fav diesel guys!
Slave lake's getting jealous that this can isn't near it!
That’s funny you had a chicken in the shop. Cause back when my wife worked at caterpillar, one of our chickens rode in the frame rail of her pickup to work one day and ended up running around the lot and had a bunch of the techs out chasing it around. Never did catch it.
I worked a shop where turkeys roamed locally.
And when you are face to face with (let’s be honest, a RAPTOR)
Never underestimate a bird.
One good thing about heui engines is it's hard to hurt one due to oil pump failure or running it out of oil ECT because no oil psi won't run
Um hpfp sending metal through the system don’t hurt a thing lol
Great video that shows what your “snoopdogging” troubleshooting technique has done: you saved the customer money by finding the exact problem of low fuel pressure was a solenoid vs. changing out a pump, and you enhanced your “cred” as a top notch diesel mechanic. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
This video helped me diagnose my 7.3 powerstroke crank no start. You explain the heui system much better than any other video I’ve seen. Thank you
As I watched this video lot's of memories were brought back. I miss my Freightliner 3126 CAT
Some people like to throw sh*t at all these newfangled electronics, but I found them very useful when diagnosing school bus engine problems.
@@Islandwaterjet yes but you also get rid of tens of thousands of your bottom line, the electronics aid immensely in getting more fuel economy and torque out of it at. I would agree the newer vehicles may have passed the point of having a good balance of tech to improve performance and simplicity for reliability.
You should have charged him for a set of spark plug wires and spark plugs while you're at it.lol great video 😎😎
Nice to see a man with consistent diagnostic abilities and he also works for an equal opportunity employer!
Wtf? Lol
That chicken better be careful around all those Cats.
From my experience with powerstrokes, it's almost always the IPR.
Knipex makes great stuff. Stings a little paying for them, but no regrets.
I’ll second that. They make quality tools. Their adjustable plier wrenches are awesome.
Ye first hand pliers I've bought where the teeth don't get immediately chewed up on steel
they sell them at menards..not to bad on price there..
I have knipex pliers that my grandfather brought back with him from Germany at the end of WWII and I absolutely love them.
I have rarely been disappointed with a USA-made, or European-made tool. Knipex being Made in Germany, of course.
The Knipex plier wrench is currently my favourite tool, super handy.
Glad you posted the part number for the IAP solenoid block off. Need to get me one. Like your videos.
Glad your back. Always enjoy the uploads
Another great and informative video Josh. Keep ‘em coming
I love the Knipex tools...i have flush cutters, diagonal cutters, the plier wrenches and various snap ring pliers, never let me down.
My German boss says it's "kneepex" fwiw.
Knipex, with a short "i". Dont know where your boss is from in germany, but he is wrong. We say it like that here, lol
@@Catluke96 not my tongue so no clue here...but great tools either way.
@@drrrrockzo I'm from northern Germany, we say Kneepex round here...
Always learning new piece of useful information watching your videos. Thanks a lot!
It is nice to see another video from you, Josh! Hope Thanksgiving was good, and Christmas is better!
Thanks for the video. Love the troubleshooting stuff.
Love your informative videos 👍
It would be great to see more vids from you. It's always so interesting.
amazing vids
Great video. Very informative.
Another great video Josh!
Your knowledge is great, I learnt heaps with your uploads. Many thanks.... :)
i really love watching your videos even though I am no tech but I wish that I have gotten into the field 40 years ago.
The grass is always greener on the other side,
But grass is always green.
Consider yourself lucky you are not burned out and destroyed inside from the industry.
I can wait until the next video when we find out the chicken has been promoted to management.
It would probably do a better job lol
well done mr.josh honestly you are intelligent man
Great video keep up the great work very informative
Missed the videos happy to have a new one.
I have a small pair of knipex pliers like that and they're great often a go to tool
Great job. Your the man
That stuff in the spray can, is called "majic in a can" ! 😃 Great Video, THANKS
JPaydirt calls it "Start You Bastard".
You are a genius man.
Ah good call on those pliers! I hate those solenoids on the c13s. The fuel enable valve, the IVA oil control valve, and the CGI control valve solenoids always give me an issue. The nut gets stuck to the coil part and the whole damn thing spins. A normal wrench won't fit on the base. You have to grind it down to fit.
Love the videos buddy
Outstanding!
Ah the good old cats, sweet video bro, nice change of scenery
Given the extra layer of components and complexity in a HEUI system vs a common rail system, I have always wondered why Cat and Ford went with the HEUI for so long.
At the time heui was the best option for high pressure electronic fuel injection. Of course until common rail became standard. It’s very capable, as oil pressurized over the lower viscosity fuel easily creates desired injection pressure.
Keith Also back in the mid 90's when the HEUI system came out emissions weren't as tight. HEUI could provide the needed pressure. Standards got tighter requiring much higher pressures at the injector tip for greater fuel atomization. Common rail systems have tip pressures as high as 30,000psi. Common rail is more expensive, tolerances are way tighter to get the needed pressures.
Decades ago we found oil type and condition was the biggest factor in longevity and reliability with HUI motors, to the point
1.we ran remote oil system extra volume (ROS)
2. We ran extra bypass oil filters ( 7micron)
3.we ran centrifugal oil filtration ( spinner filter)
4.And a 4micron in line filter to HUI pump supply oil circuit.
This gave good oil pump life, good viscosity longevity and exceptional HUI pump and solenoid valve life.
This was an evolution in a large fleet addressing reliability issues thru failure analysis and trial and error over time but any one can do these upgrades quite easily and effectively if you have a HUI system, the only issue we saw was oil migration into injector harness but this seemed to become less of and issue as we removed more carbon from oil with filtration upgrades , oil seemed to be less conductive and didn't affect injector operation even though slight leakage from passthru plug still present
At the time of its development, it was the most technologically advanced Diesel fuel injection system that had ever been invented, quite a modern marvel to have an electronically controlled instead of mechanically controlled system. On top of that, you could change the power level at the click of a knob, or a reflash without changing any of the injection hardware. Ask the 12 valve guys about that one.
Ford never used HEUI themselves, they were using Navistar engines.
Nice Video Josh....
If you don’t like spraying starting fluid directly into the intake, if you have a second person handy, I always like to grab a shop rag and put a little gasoline on it and pop one of the air to air boots off and while your buddy is turning the key trying to start it, you’re spreading the rag right across the air to air. I personally just like doing that better than starting fluid, but I have used starting fluid many times lol. Great video
Gasoline has more resistance to Detonation under heat and pressure, called octane, where starting fluid is extremely volatile under heat and pressure, so I don't understand how Gasoline is going to start a cold engine better than starting fluid or diesel fuel for that matter.
@@goodmanboattransport3441 they don’t need much. A little bump of gasoline vapors and it’ll come to life. I’ve never locked a motor up with that technique. I’ve locked them up with ether though several times.
@@tywinters9462
Great care is required using ether, it doesn't take much and never let the glow plugs heat up, that's a recipe to blow up the intake on a diesel engine. I've found cranking until you get some smoke, then a quick 1/4 second shot gives that little bit of fire to light the cylinders
@@goodmanboattransport3441 I don’t disagree. Yea you just have to be careful. I’m not against using ether, I always keep a can with me in a pinch.
Yo love the content!!!!
Love the videos
Wow, a new vid from “the ape” AND snow!! It’s an early Christmas! 🎄
Thank You again for all Your 3126 guidance , bought my 2002 GMC T-7500 / 3126 new .... use Your Amazon Affiliate link often
Nice video sir. One thing I always stress to customers is check your engine oil level first, if the injectors are passing oil into the fuel system, eventually the engine will die and have a hard time starting. I also remove the nut holding the solenoid for the Injection Actuation Pressure Control Valve and slide it off the IAPCV and use a 1-1/8 box end to loosen the valve. Keep up the good work 👍
apprentice here, what will loosening the valve accomplish?
@@busterscruggs3031 which valve are you referring to??
@@dougbaer5752 sorry, the iapcv
When you remove the IAPCV, you can put the test plug in and dead head the HEUI pump.
@@dougbaer5752 cheers thanks, I'm just learning electronic fuel systems in school right now
Dam good battery or no compression 😅
I have one of those Knipex plier wrench things, I like it but prefer the basic water pump pliers (knipex) because they grip better and are narrower.
Keep it up buddy 😎
Thank you Terry.
Cab was filthy!
Good video
Hey Ape, must say I enjoy watching your videos man, really edifying. Thank God I haven't experience some of the issues you talked about but atleast with what I learned I can use that to do a lot of preventative maintenance. Here's a question I want to ask you. I just got an 05 w900l. Coolant keep seeping through radiator cap. I recently change the cap b4 cause I lost the old one. The other day I saw my radiator cap turned almost half way. What do you think the issue is?
LOL, the chicken not surprised. It is northern (your state 😁) amazing but different people. Amazing content!
Thanks for coming in today 🤙
"Poultry-based employee" 🤣🤣🤣
Killed me. Love the wordplay.
Tnx the vidio i get many about HEUI
those Knipex are great! and they are non marring...
Good job quickly fix n cheep
Had a 5.9 with very similar conditions
I've been hoping you'd do an upload soon, but it's a double win with the 3126.
I'd love to come out oo retirement and work with you. Great Videowork with you.
I have a 7.3 Powerstroke and to my knowledge they use this fuel system from Caterpillar. I was having an issue of the truck not starting and I found the Injection pressure was not high enough. I was only building 200 psi. I replaced the IPR from Ford which I'm sure they get from Cat. It solved my problem and I haven't had a problem since.
I wish I lived close by your shop. In BC those guys would have changed everything until it was fixed.
I had on old RV Cat that wouldn't run bottom feed tank .Tank had 2 inches of silt on bottom cleaned it out Runs like new got the RV for 2500 bucks Yee Haw Drove it to Canada and back to Florida .Cats rule!!
Sweet diag for the Hei pressure test. I was betting the shutoff was bad. Coulkd you feel it knock when activated?? Good catch!
Won’t start that’s great! That’s exactly what I said earlier today with my 01 f650 3126b!
Great video! I have two 3126s in a small church bus fleet, this is exactly the sort of content that will come in handy someday. What is the part number of that block off tool?
After recently getting set up with Cat ET, seeing you use it makes A LOT more sense. It seems to be a very simple and easy to use diag platform Thanks again and have a Merry Christmas season!
Block off tool's part number is in the description :)
one time a crawfish somehow made its way into my shop, which is weird cause i live in pennsylvania, and the nearest body of water was like a mile away 😂
gotta watch out working around them chickens, they tend to have a FOWL mouth!, bwahaha. Keep up the good work Josh.
What diagnostic software are you using?
Great video, btw!! Thank you for everything you post!
I had the same thing going on over thanksgiving with my 3126 unfortunately i had to do 2 heui pumps and injector o rings
Great video man, any chance you can share the part# for that dummy actuator?
Thanks in advance
My bus / daily driver has shutters in front of radiator so we can put all the heat inside the bus to keep passengers warm in winter, shutters recently been misbehaving opening n closing while it doesn’t make sense like closed when warm engine or open when cold engine cold out. Has vacuum to engine block on an electrical sensor.
Just put cardboard on the front.
Can you do a toolbox tour
its always amazing to watch your videos.....is there any colleague who works on hydraulic side? please refer me his channel, thanks
Hello Josh
Is there any particular brand you recommend for combustion leak detector? Such as uview
The chicken is the best part of the video lol
Had the same problem with an International HEUI engine
I dislike the C7 but the 3126 seems to much more reliable. We still have a couple of them where I work.
From my experience they’re loud, burn lots of oil, and like to throw rods.
I checked harnes wiring c15 after checking hard to start ?
I checked all plug alright ?
Please let me know if you know?
I from TOGO 🇹🇬 Africa country
Do you have the pn for that dummy solenoid plug
Is there a CAT i could put in a 98 dodge ram 3500 currently cummins and automatic?. Would the cat bolt up to the auto
do you have the cat number for the dummy valve
Im from Canada , Do you have an amazon link for the knipex tool? I really want to support your channel
The dummy solenoid that you used in the video. Any chance you may have a part number for it ?
Yes please send part no.
Will we see more of our new feathered mascot?
I have a C7 2005 F650
KEY ON IM GETTING NO POWER TO HEUI. The ecm fuse hit the ecm combines with the ignition to ecm to fire the ecm which feeds the engine portion of the motor? Im curious on my next move. I hooked a laptop to it but not able to connect like its not fully getting power to the connector for diag. I put a power probe into the diag connector i have hard power on 6 out of 8 pins. The two pins have power but like a flickering dim light. Any thought on my issue sir? Tia
Do you recommend an after market diagnostic system for Detroit diesel? 12.7 Detroit
Hey i just bought a freightliner with the caterpillar 3126 engine. I drove it from california to arizona which is about 300 mile or so. It was driving fine , but as soon as i got home and was ready to park. It started smelling like burned rubber and i saw a cloud of white smoke from the front of the engine. Now it cranks but wont start. I made it start for a few seconds but it starts smoking right away and it seems like something locks up from where the serpentine belt is and it makes the engine shut off. Any idea to what it might be ?
Fastest way to check ICP issues is dead heading the pump with a gauge. Or popping the valve cover off and physically checking for excessive oil leakage around injector seals while cranking or running.
I Air check for O-ring leaks, without pulling the cover...disconnect the HPOP supply,I use a fitting that taps right into the port...air it up to around 120-140psi ....then,take a plastic bag and wrap it around the breather tube and see if the bag expands, from the leaking, compressed air @ the injectors...as the compressed air will fill the block with pressure and vent out through the vent tube
And agreed...always deadhead....just make sure you have a gauge that is made for liquid and goes to 6k psi and also make sure the gauge hose is rated for up to 6000psi..Ive tried 2 wire 4000 psi hydro hose and it popped.
I've thought about that years ago when I would work on the 444 and 466s but was worried about tearing up a good pump by dead heading it if something else didn't give.
@@markwilliams4525 nope...wont hurt it one bit,as long as you do it for no more than 20 seconds at a time...as soon as you release the key from start,(left in on),The IPR valve will let it bleed back down..just make sure you use 6000psi 2wire hydraulic hose and a liquid gauge rated for 10000 psi...the gauge should jump up to about 4000psi,within 10-15 seconds
@@markwilliams4525 its actually what international/Navstar calls for when diaging the HPOP
I can’t find the cat block off tool anywhere, so you have a link?
Did you ever find the number for the bloke off ?
I know where the chicken came from. The other side of the road. Lol
I had an oil pump break off one of my customer trucks because the front main cap was loose. Came in for a front main seal leak. One bolt was still holding on and I unknowingly pulled that bolt first and nearly dropped it on my face. Lol
Where you get those gloves ?
How can I get in touch with you I need help ASAP with my 3406 b timing advance
what is the block off tool part#
so they are using starting fluid with a grid heater? how does that work out
Do you have the part # for the test plug?
I love knipex been using them for years.
In the description ?
We used to remove output line install a line with tee 8000 psi guage plug the end of the tee, crank, dead head test should get near 4000 psi if it can then leak is an injector upstairs
It’s just like a 7.3 ipr valve same function
