I came off Klonopin abruptly at a detox center. 4.5 months later I reinstated onto Valium per recommendation of my doctor and people on forums. I had an extraordinarily horrible reaction to it with extreme lasting effects. I am now 13 years off and still sick. I have improved since then but it has been HELL.

@@michelebergman4336 OH no, I've been off all benzos for 13 years. It got so bad, I came off the Valium, was in a hospital for 2 months, then went across the country to see a doctor who was 'benzo wise'. I've wondered the same thing about going back on Klonopin, but no way of knowing. I think it was a kindling effect.

@@michelebergman4336 ahh klonopin is way stronger then the standard valium, that's why people have so much trouble getting off it, a taper is to be directed by the patient not the doctor, going back to klonopin would start kindling, that's the last thing you want, that's why the Ashton Manual tells people how to figure out the taper that best suits there body and mind.

I am 61 years old and have been medicated for panic disorder with xanax and paxil at a high dose for 30 years. I am fully functioning , work a high level job and have no panic attacks . My medications have not been changed in 30 years. I want to live my life out in peace as i am. Prolonged withdrawal sounds like a torture session that would last years. Why would someone my age ...who would like to retire and enjoy my life be forced to go through this terror?

I can only hope and pray it will never poop out on you. I never felt the need to change my klonopin dosage either. I was “only” taking it 1x/day at the end thinking that was better. *see interdose withdrawal. The problem is “continuity of care”. Doctors retire, new doctors only hear “benzos are bad” but do not understand why. The people left on them need protection. There should be laws protecting people from being force cut, but also limiting new patients to 7-14 day PRN RXs. I have friends hurt unimaginably 7-10 years later from “only” taking it two weeks. I first got hurt “only” taking it twice/week and then letting the RX run out. Geraldine Burns introduced a “Massachusetts Benzodiazepine Bill” to the Massachusetts Legislature trying to protect patients like yourself from benzodiazepine injury and benzodiazepine tapering injury. I suggest you find “The Benzodiazepine Information Coalition” on UA-cam and see the testimonies of all the hurt patients. Hurt doctors, nurses. Hurt “regular” people.
People get worried this medication harmed community is going after benzos. Trust me, these people are here to protect you. Doctors retire, while the message still is not clear. They’ll rip people off a benzo and throw people on an antipsychotic in assisted living not understanding people are getting hurt by that process. Especially adding dopamine antagonists that masks some of the injury while ruining you from that moment on.

Same here, I found that out the hard way my first time reinstating took me 2 weeks for the withdrawals to subside. Had to be admitted to psych hospital. Unfortunately had a bad reaction to the antidepressant that I was given, had breathing difficulties that was frightening. Switched to a new antidepressant, I know I'm shaking my head at myself. It's just that I was so very desperate as I have been badly harmed by a SSRI. I just wanted my world, my identity my sense of self back. I had to CT because I started to hallucinate, paranoia and hear a voice telling me to jump out of a window along with muscle spasms and feeling manic thanks trazodone.

@salomerummel6920 I've been on and off for the last 6 years but I initially was on a high dose for a long time. My first time I just lost my doctor and couldn't get another doctor to continue or even taper. Back in 2018 or so I eventually called a helpline and the guy told me the only way to get help would be to say I was suicidal then they would have to give me medical attention. I do that and first thing they say Is no benzos so at that point I put all my faith in to just quitting. I think they gave me one dose the whole week I was in.
After 6 years I finally talk to my family and tell them I need to see a specialist after trying everything else and after we meet he says all he does is taper and if I tried to see any other specialist they would just taper me quicker...
So sorry yeah I'm currently on like 15mg of diazapam a day. Taper 2 mg every 14 days. It's horrible. When he first started me back on clonazapam I could go camping and stuff with my family. Now I'm on diazapam it's just panic attacks throughout the days. Some days are OK then I wake up in a panic so I just don't know what to do. When I'm like this all I do is isolate. Akathesia is horrible.

I was told by a psychiatrist similar to him( works in antidepressant and benzo withdrawal) that reinstatement can work up to 2 years off the meds. I was off Wellbutrin (300 mg) and Lexapro 10 mg 1 year + 3 months. I was advised to start at 20 mg Wellbutrin. I immediately had horrible side effects, but I was hoping for improvement in time. Over 2 months I was up to 50 mg, then 75 mg for a week. The whole week on 75 mg I was a rageaholic, and developed severe akathesia!! 😳😳I was up all night shaking and pacing and panicking. Now I was terrified of coming off too quickly but I had to stop immediately. The side effects went away and my protracted damage remained. It is now 2 years 1 month off cold turkey of the 2 meds (advice from a coach) and starting to feel a bit better.

He’s correct. If you get too far out, it’s really a new set of symptoms that doesn’t respond to the medication the same way because the brain is damaged. It feels like it might be (partially) saving you but it usually never works the same. You’ll sit and slowly worsen your baseline and then need to come off. You often wind up one notch worse. I had 3 quick taper jump attempts where I reinstated 9-15 days. I kept reinstating ever lower and banging my head against tolerance until I finally broke through. (Using my head apparently, because I finally pushed through and did not reinstate.) I think I SHOULD have, but that’s a coulda shoulda woulda. I got impatient and quick tapered the last 0.75mg/day of Klonopin over 45 days. I pushed passed the 15 day mark things started to explode. By day 90, I was asking for brain MRIs and physically got one by day 120. Showed nothing. The tinnitus explosion was from another planet.

I was roughly 6-7 months out after being cold turkeyed off of 6 psych meds including klonopin all taken daily for a year and a half. the only way was to reinstate and updose klonopin and go back on anafranil. it saved my life. I wouldn't have survived without reinstatement. Slowly tapering and almost off it all and it's soooo much better. It took me roughly 2 months or so for the pain to stop after reinstating. It was hard but I was a severe case....it worked.

    • @kevk741
      @kevk741 20 днів тому

@@4GSLmusic I tell everyone there are different levels to these injuries. Most of my worst symptoms always erupted months after I was off, doing exactly what you describe. I was always pushed back to paincare by 2 years off. The pain med would go sideways faster and faster like everything else. Anything that helped, I had to taper in the end. Even after only a few days. I’d take hydrocodone for one day and spend a week tapering out of it. The pain got so bad I had to try and stay on the opiate. I’d eventually have to taper and bring on a benzodiazepine to help. I’d come off both and shit would erupt again.
I hope you are like Nicole Lamberson PA. She reinstated at 4 months in raging akathisia and tapered over 18 mths and her akathisia was gone. Of course she still has all kinds of leg pain over 12 years later. I have seen more people reinstate and end up worse and trapped trying to taper. It’s a very risky maneuver. I have reinstated daily benzos 3-4 significant times. I probably have a dozen actual kindles. Most of my friends in chronic akathisia who reinstated the benzo to taper more slowly have regretted that decision with every ounce of their being. My friend Samantha had to go to Switzerland after reinstating 9 months off. She tried bringing on Mirtazapine for sleep at 5 months and then brought Ativan back at 9 months off. She could not survive another taper and was slowly worsening.
It’s really about how much you got hurt. These meds do not work the same once injured and can worsen you in ways they didn’t before. Once your dopamine is deregulated and down regulated, everything will work differently. Once your dopamine system is hurt, even hormones or food will react differently. People can become intolerant to nearly any substance or food or otherwise. Histamine centers get ruined.
I do believe some people are just prone to these tardive symptoms after coming off, but I do think those same people can make it infinitely worse if that stuff is going to happen each time.

Dr Josef, could you please talk about assisted suicide for mental health going on in The Netherlands and Canada? Zoraya Ter Beek is scheduled to die by euthanasia this May. She went from psych meds, to electroconvulsive therapy, to now assisted suicide. 3 doctors have signed off on her death. I don't know how anyone hasn't considered iatrogenic harm for her case. It's now the meds>ect>assisted suicide pipeline.

I know you’re playing with camera angle but we are in a new era the interview angle only works if someone is actually interviewing you and you need to be looking over the shoulder of the interviewer-it’s ok just to look straight at the camera the switch in angle is not needed so feel gratuitous and distracting-what you have to say is way more important-I think it’s ok just to stick with the straight shot talking directly to the viewer plus it adds the dimension that we are getting a real up and close conversation of a doctor. Your personal style and empathetic approach comes through and it is very comforting-what we don’t get from most doctors these days

He told me to take 2 Xanax a day and to stop complaining basically. Except this was not the normal start up effect. It was an adverse dangerous reaction. I quit after 3 weeks. 2 years and 4 months off I am still struggling with PAWS.

Can attest to a similar experience in a different class of drugs, albeit a few months, 3 to be precise. The only thing that makes me feel better is being dead on with detox, diet and a fierce schedule so I don't slow down and fall into the physical/psychosomatic mauling I experienced. Not a victim, but my time on a drug and DROPPED off it suddenly has certainly, without a doubt changed my entire life path.

I got way worse at months 9-11. I'm at month 16 now into month 17. My symptoms have evened out but are still noticeable but incrementally getting better. It isn't linear though. It's like 2 steps forward 1 step back type of progress. I'd give it another couple months to see how you feel. If it continues to get worse maybe reinstating would be worth a shot. I was on for 22 years in addition to other substances in that time frame as well. I often have days where I feel stuck and feel like this is my new normal and then other days I feel like my old self again. It's hard to know what normal is for me because I was on SSRIs from the age of 17 to 39. I do know I never felt like this before medication. I was simply experiencing depression and anxiety in my teenage years, which most of us do... I'm not fully healed and sometimes I'm wary of sharing advice in my fragile state but I hope this helps you a little bit. Keep fighting. We all need to keep fighting. We're in this together.

It is true that SSRI/SNRIs generally have quite mild side effects. The most common side effects include nausea, dizziness, sleep problems, and dry mouth. In most cases, these side effects are mild and go away on their own.
However, it is also true that a smaller portion of users may experience more serious side effects, such as agitation, mania, suicidal thoughts, and sexual problems. It is also important to remember that it can be difficult to discontinue SSRI/SNRI treatment, and some people may experience withdrawal symptoms such as fatigue, anxiety, and dizziness.
You mention that older antidepressants (TCAs, MAOIs, Mianserin) do not generally have these problems. This is partially true. These medications can be effective for some people, but they often have more and more serious side effects than SSRIs/SNRIs. They can also be dangerous if combined with certain other medications or alcohol.
I agree that it is important to be critical of the pharmaceutical industry and that you should not blindly believe everything you hear. But I think it is wrong to scare people away from using antidepressants. These medications can be very helpful for people who suffer from depression and anxiety. They can save lives and improve the quality of life for many people.
Using antidepressants and benzodiazepines the right way
Antidepressants and benzodiazepines are two types of medication that are often used to treat depression and anxiety. While they can be effective for many people, it is important to use them the right way to avoid side effects and dependence.
Right dose: It is important to take the right dose of antidepressants and benzodiazepines. Taking too little may not make the medication work, while taking too much can cause serious side effects. A doctor can help you determine the right dose for you.
Right patient: Antidepressants and benzodiazepines are not right for everyone. They should not be used by people who are pregnant or breastfeeding, or who have certain medical conditions. A doctor can determine if these medications are right for you.
Right duration: Antidepressants and benzodiazepines should only be taken for as long as needed. Taking them longer than necessary can increase the risk of side effects and dependence. A doctor can help you determine how long you should take these medications.
Use with other medications: Antidepressants and benzodiazepines can interact with other medications you are taking. It is important to tell your doctor about all the medications you are taking, including prescription medications, over-the-counter medications, and supplements.

Fast tapered last summer from 1 mg klonopin. Reduced by .25 mg every couple of weeks down to .125 for a week then jumped off. It was hell! I thought I was dying. I reinstated at .25 and that wasn’t any better. I went up to 1 mg and felt like a zombie. So I went to .75 and it took two solid months to stabilize. But I started a water taper immediately from .75. Now at .18 mg. I’m almost done! I suggest a 75% reinstatement. Then taper. Of course, it’s different for everyone, and reinstatement will take time for you to become stable.
For note, I was only completely off for maybe 2-3 weeks before reinstating. My taper has had ups and downs, but I’m sleeping and can drive short distances. I can cook dinner and take long walks in the park. I hope this is a positive outlook when I jump off again.
