    wow this is really helpful! kinda late but im making a game about alchemy, you have your character accept quests that upon completion they rank up the first one to get the max rank wins but to do so you need to complete harder and harder quests, you craft stuff, collect materials, battle, use skills unique to each character, use items! im trying to make it easy to play but complex enough to make players think of diferent ways to play it

    I'm trying to create a cooperative strategy game with simple rpg elements. Each players is the crew member of a ship and can enhance his skills (as mechanics, biology, leadership). It's quiet in an early stage at the moment but i want to keep the game simple and those videos are really helping. Thanks!

    Thanks for the information, it was very helpful. I'm creating a board game, as components at the moment it has: poker-sized cards, a board 10 in x 30 in, a dice, a Sand timer and some tokens and pawns. You helped me a lot because I was stuck, now I know I have to make the prototype of my game as fast as possible, there will be time to improve it as far as the image is concerned.

      Yes, I remember you stating that you want player interaction and a heavy theme. We should do a new video on the variations of theme and how you can slip them into your game not just with mechanics. Love your theme of Vikings by the way.

    Whats up man! Just subscribed i am working on a few games right now, one i am making a print up on. Its a nice small footprint treasure hunting euro card based came with variants. Also been making another for about 2 years now of a territory control/ combat/ hand management with blind bidding system. L9ve seening other people putting work in where they are passionate. I use photoshop with excel for my cards. Tried NanDeck and it was to restrictive for what i was trying to do. Great videos and i look forward to watching more.

    Really enjoyed these videos. Me and my husband enjoy board games so much but recently we have been looking for a decent horror movie trivia board game and we have yet to come across one that looks similar to what we want in one. We are just thinking of ideas right now but I think we might try to make one we know we would be interested in playing.

    Hi Travis! Great videos!
    I'm creating a serious board game for algorythm teaching, my public is brazilian freshmen, people who are learning "If else"/"Do While"/etc structures. I'm working with a transport/conflict kinda game (something like one team, as a caravan or independent members, trying to cross the board carrying packages, while the other team tries to snatch the packages).
    I would love to see more tips on how to design the board itself, like:
    Should I used fixed obstacles in the board drawing (like rocks, houses, etcetera) or should I leave them loose (as pieces that should be positioned)? If they're loose, what kind of rules should I make to define how they can or cannot be positioned and by who?
    Hope you read my comment!
    Thanks for the awesome videos!

    I’m creating a strategy RPG board game and am closing in on testing it myself. I have a few win scenarios, a name for the game, a logo, a fun mechanic I tossed in there, player and NPC figurines I’ve sculpted and painted, a world map I’m not certain I want to paint the territory lines on, and thinking about how I want to use cards in it.
    I’d like to do a pile you want and a pile you don’t want to draw from, however, would like to keep it from being overwhelming. I imagine a stack of 100 cards for spells, events, equipment, and mercenary cards will do the trick. It’s for 1-8 players ages 13+.
    I don’t have any towns and cities on the map and have a feeling that will come next, yet, I’d like to give players the ability to set up their own base. In which case, I’ll have to sculpt some fortresses or just 1 fortress and duplicate that a few times.
    I might have already sent a comment last night, but kept on deleting it as I kept on answering myself.
    It’d be cool to get some feedback. Also, thank you so much for these videos. They’ve helped a lot.
    Also, I’ve left out the rules and directions as I believe they’ll come along as I play test it.

    • @TIMORUMGamers
      @TIMORUMGamers  6 років тому +1

      Ah, RPG Board Game! This is a difficult feat! However, if done properly, it could be awesome.
      Onto my feedback... you may be putting the "cart in front of the horse" here with putting so much into the actual prototype. Remember, prototyping is ONLY for TESTING. You can spend a LOT of time doing sculpts / painting - it seems like you are an artist.
      Pump the breaks on the physical components and spend more time in the testing phase. It doesn't seem like you've sat down and played a full game yet. What is the gist of how your game is played? What is the "fun mechanic?" Also, the rules and directions are going to by WHY people will play your game.
      I'm glad the videos are helping! Get those playtests in and let me know how things go for you!

    • @kaoskryst6688

      TIMORUM Gamers awesome is what I’m aiming for 3:D
      Yeah, placed the pieces on the board and a lot are too big for it, however, I believe I can add a new play feature to the game with them that ought to be pretty fun. I’m about as creative as the next person lol. They did come out pretty cool and cute though.
      I haven’t play tested yet and want to give players that wow factor when they pick their hero out, or say “this is cool/terrifying/exciting”. I want the players to know they’re playing a cool game that’s fun and the pieces feel good to hold and pick up and admire and inspire them to want to get into that character or aspire to be cooler than their hero or be in the same league as them. To make them feel like they’re a part of something fantastic and have great memories playing with their friends and then later going on other great adventures in the world outside of the game with people they care about. I want to create that bonding feeing while also getting players into that competitive spirit.
      As to how the game is played. You’re the hero/commander, have generals to aid you in establishing command posts to train troops in your conquest for legendary artifacts to aid in world domination. It’ll play a lot like risk with a little bit of MTG to spice it up. And if that’s not enough, players can try their luck in exciting the fears of others as they take a spin to benefit themselves, or perhaps a teammate, or make everyone sweat when it lands on some devastating options.
      As to why people will play the game. Why do people stuff themselves at thanksgiving? It hurts so good to tap into the sadist and masochist in us all. With that said, I believe this will be an adult game the teenagers want to play but have to beg their mommies and daddies to get it for them or Santa’s not getting it for them.
      Bwehahahaha lol
      I believe that captured the gist of it, if not, let me know what I left out.
      I appreciate the feedback a lot.
      When this game is made. You will be one of the few to first crack open This Epic Game of Awesomeness to enjoy with your family and friends.
      Also, the next chance I get to work on it I will cut it down to cardboard cut outs and let you know how the primordial soup plays out.

    I'm making a spacegame. Using hex tiles as a game board. I'll have different kinds of cards in my game as well as cubes (to represent different resources etc). I made some stuff a while ago to play test n i did play test it a few times jyst myself, however now I have shifted the game a bit and a lot of things have changed. Now I'm trying to figure more of the game out to make more parts so I can play test it. Unfortunately I legit have no one to play test it with but I'm still busy working on it and coming up with new ideas every day.

    • @TIMORUMGamers
      @TIMORUMGamers  6 років тому

      I definitely understand where you're coming from. For now, I would suggest you simply playtest it as much as possible. Then, when you're ready, bring your game to a local game store and see if you can find some play testers there. You also may want to check out board game geek to find playtesters - however, with that said, your game will need to have the capability to be printed out. Finding other game devs is another great way to get playtesters - you test their game, and in turn, they will test yours. It may seem time consuming, but I think it's a great way to get a different perspective, especially one from another dev (we have a tendency to think differently than the random player). Keep having fun and let me know how it goes for you!

    Hey! First I just want to say I've found your help videos for designing a board game super helpful!
    Secondly I'm working on a fantasy strategic war board game, and am wondering if you have any ideas on weather a hex movement grid, or a "point-to-point" location movement system is better?

    • @TIMORUMGamers
      @TIMORUMGamers  7 років тому +1

      For every question like this, I would go back to my brainstorming phase answers. What kind of "user experience" is it that you're trying to accomplish? And, what experience does each mechanic provide for you? Hex based movement is going to be a more "strategy" based movement system than hexes. Can you give me an example of what you mean by a "point-to-point" movement system?

    • @TheJoshman01
      @TheJoshman01 7 років тому +1

      Something like Napoleonic Wars, where you can only move along a pre-determined path between, say Berlin, and Prague. Usually following some sort of road system.

    • @TheJoshman01
      @TheJoshman01 7 років тому +1

      Also, thank you for responding to my question!

    • @TIMORUMGamers
      @TIMORUMGamers  7 років тому +1

      I think it depends on how important movement is in your game as well as its complexity in terms of user experience and in its execution. Pre-determined pathways will need to be tested rigorously since balance in terms of movement will be asymmetrical. Whereas a grid overlaying a map lends itself to a different "feel" of movement. Unfortunately it's not too cut and dry, but I hope this helps with your thinking.

    I have a question for you, or anybody that watches this...
    Boardgames using dices always have this 'luck' thing. You need to be lucky with what you role to beat the opponents and win the game.
    What is a good alternative object to replace 'luck' or dices for actual skill or being smarter then your opponents?

    • @TIMORUMGamers
      @TIMORUMGamers  5 років тому

      Usually something that has a static number will be more "skill" based as opposed to being luck based. This can come in the form of a cards or just being a mechanism (a set of rules) that you have in your board game. I hope this helps!

  • @nibalmadi3096
    @nibalmadi3096 6 років тому +1

    Thank that really helped me, This is my first time trying to create a board game, it will be about Art (art Culture) in the same time we want this game to be fun and adventures (something like Mansions of madness or Zomicide ) because we don't want the players to get bored. What do you think ?

    • @TIMORUMGamers
      @TIMORUMGamers  6 років тому

      Ah, sounds like a bit of a "learning" type of board game! These are very difficult, because they are so often just not fun. You can do it, just make sure to focus on the fun and adventures and let the art / art culture be the flavor. If it's not fun, no one will play. Create your prototype as fast as possible and get it on the table to see what works, what doesn't and be honest with yourself. Off the bat, a mechanic I think would work is where the player must evaluate the value of the art work before they purchase it... or maybe steal it - Makes me think of something akin to National Treasure or Oceans 11.

    I'm currently working on a paintball board game, there has only been one other one released to my knowledge back in 2002 or so. My games mechanics are much different/better than the older one, so would it be worth it to make it even if one has been made already?

    • @TIMORUMGamers
      @TIMORUMGamers  6 років тому +1

      I would say go for it! If you're looking to get it to a publisher or self publishing, you may want to check out the sales of the other game to see how the market is for it. Having very little competition is both a good and a bad thing. The good... like you said, most likely with today's technology you will be able to make a better game... the other is... is there a big enough market for it? With that said, I would suggest you go for it and quickly make a prototype and see how it actually plays. Strategy games with miniatures have a tendency to do very well and you never know how it may be on kickstarter.

    So I always wanted to make my board game, cause I love two things the most, board games and medieval rpg.
    So I have a plan for board game, it is basically with RPG and strategy elements, what do you say could it work?
    It has big game board, with world map on it, it is 3 player game or 3 factions, so every player have one wizard and one army, each are different with their skills and abilities and every faction have army units like infantry, horseman, archers, catapults, with army you have more strategy game side, you recruit warriors, then you expand on map fighting for power and upgrading you castle, and combat happens with your units that you has made in a card way battle, and with wizards u have rpg side of game, i'ts basically your main character, so I have story/ theme where theses 3 wizards are fighting for immortality, there is reason in backstory, So i imagine this game like constant battle between army's for power, and the race for becoming immortal, of course I have so much more in there, like spell cards, side quests, different placeses/dungeons where you with wizards can enter, and you can go to town sell, buy, you can craft.
    I wanna make it rich but not to complex, Rich but not too complex, that's my idea, I wanna make it with lot of options.
    Give me replay as soon as possible please, Im still working on it, making a prototype now still changing some mechanic's.
    and great video by the way.

  • @audris8113
    @audris8113 7 років тому

    I just got this idea, but i don't really know if it would work as a board game, could be boring. Basically a pretty long game in which you expand your village and collect resources to build stuff and (Maybe) raid other players? Maybe the village expanding part should be taken out, and i should put more thought in raiding? I have a medieval theme in my head. Asking for your opinion, maybe it's not even worth thinking about.

    • @TIMORUMGamers
      @TIMORUMGamers  7 років тому

      It sounds a lot like a resource management, perhaps with some kind of deck building mechanic, which is quite popular right now. Of course, it depends on how you have things figured out in your head as to how things would work... or at least have an idea. It's always worth pursuing. Personally, I love tactical / strategy based games like what you're describing.

    You may or may not be looking at this videos comments anymore but the board game I'm developing is called solar empires. Basic pitch: Explore the system, Conquer other players, and Build your empire. The setting for now is our solar system where a large celestial body destroys earth so each player plays a faction that has to build an empire in the solar system. Collecting materials from planets, astroids, the Sun, and even the remains of earth can be scavenged for large amounts of iron and other basic building materials.

    • @TIMORUMGamers
      @TIMORUMGamers  7 років тому

      Yo, thanks for the comment! I would suggest you keep things simple and just use 3x5 cards... they are inexpensive and you can rewrite them (just use pencil).
      I would also suggest you make an excel document with all of the card names, what the do, costs, etc. When you make a change, change it in your excel document first (I use Google Spreadsheet), then make the change on the card(s). I've found that if I make the change on the card, I would risk forgetting to make the change in the document.
      Why bother with using the spreadsheet? Well, if you lose a card, you can always create a new one using your excel document, ensuring that everything is made properly.
      Also, don't add any art work - this will be your last step.

      Haha! That's a great thing! And go for it if that's what you want to do. However, art work takes time and good art work takes a lot of time. It would be a shame to realize that something isn't working in your game and later have to take it out (including the art work).
