I think there are worse movies than "Prometheus", but still I was very disapointed by that movie. The first Alien movie had a certain magic (and it still has), that only very few movies have. You can watch "Alien" today and it´s still thrilling, because the story and the athmosphere is so good. This is something that can not be said about many todays movies, even those with a big budget and lots of CGI-effects. The story makes a movie great.
i was VERY young when i was first subjected to this movie and aliens. i was terrified of the dark for a long time lol i always thought thered be an alien hanging from the ceiling or something.. but i grew to love these films with all my heart. R I P H.R. :/
@TheCosmicFireStar I totally respect O'Bannon's contribution. I just think this is one of those cases where the originator's vision would actually have been LESS good than the vision that ended up resulting from multiple people having their say and influencing the final product. Certainly I have no doubt that Scott's exceptional feel for visuals and environments - his ability to "create a world" - raised the final product's quality by an order of magnitude.
Ridley says theres gonna be new monsters/Aliens in the Prometheus sequel but I cant seem him topping the Xenomorph, its so out of this world, bio-mechanical and just Iconic.
One of the best movies ever made. Pure Hitchcock if you ask me. I bet if you add up all the screentime of the actual alien its probably 2 minutes. Its the mind that fabricates the fear and suspense.
Alien3 = A dark, Gothic horror tale with a "Hitchcockian" tone with the "monster in the dark" but in a grisly way. Envision driving up a very dark forest until the car breaks down. Dealing with strangers who are in a same place where tragedy, paranoia, and cowardice comes into the fray. Either fight your way to find the light at the end of the forest, or give up trying to confront the "thing". Even doing what is necessary to end it as a act of sacrifice. Facing fear eye to eye, no weapons but s
I think the other three Alien films all have their merits, but the original still stands on its own for pure horror and suspense. Simple story, great cast and director, Gieger's designs, and superb special effects despite a tight budget. Those were the days where special effects required imagination and craftsmanship, and it still looks more realistic than the CGI crap around today.
You're right, but I prefer not to imagine the Alien film without Dan O'Bannon's contribution (if that's even possible), anyway. He may be a small part of the big picture, but a very deep one, the very seed of the project (sorry if my english sounds strange sometimes). After a great film like this, I can only thank him. I thank all the people responsible of its success, with all their internal fights and arguments and last-minute changes.
Dark Star was great... Have to remember Peter Jacksons b-horror-comedy "Bad Taste"? Amazing how they have gone on to make such great successful flicks...Gives me hope...maybe one day! ;)
when i was a kid, my dad loved these movies: alien, predator, terminator, he also collected comic books, so i was surrounded by monsters and mutants since age 5, same with my brother, who has his comic book collection now (i hope), but this documentary really made me chuckle... like how i was so young and i thought it was so real, they as directors and actors/actresses did their job and i thank the film/silver screen of the 80's and 90's.... really good work ladies and gentlemen, maybe the new aged kids might find this "lame" but i find it rather interesting.
That is a freaking terrifying idea, man, and something I hope to God never makes it onto film. Though considering how far movies are going to gross us out these days (Human Centipede anyone?), I'm not sure I'd even be surprised if it did.
@TheCosmicFireStar Although O'Bannon and Shussett stated explicitly in their submitted script that all characters could just as easily be women as men; they built flexibility for that into the concept, acknowledging that a studio might want to make its own decisions in that area.
I grew up watching these movies with my brothers back in the 80s I was just a boy then but I loved them I liked the chest burster scenes best for some strange reason.
Alien = An haunted house and an unexpected guest only in a planet millions of light-years away. Classic Science Fiction Horror epic in terms of suspense and fear. Aliens = An extreme action-oriented roller-coaster example of fighting against fear, and a race against time to not let the Alien encounter with our society to cause more bloodshed, on an enormous horrifying scale. All themes along the "gung-ho" masculinity and fierce feminism clash and rides with interesting sociological tones that
In the original there was no concept of a queen until James Cameron came along. In my opnion I prefer the original concept making the Alien more terrifying.
I think the next Alien film should go back to the horror roots and authenticity that made the first movie a smash. I loved James Cameron's sequel alot, but I wasn't as scared as I was with the original. They should experiment with how much the ship can tear apart gravitational wise, and the dehumanizing aspects the crew develops once the Alien takes control of the ship.
Even if they go back to the horror roots, I get the feeling no matter what approach they take, it will never be as scary or iconic as the original. Times have changed and people have pretty much seen every horrific idea in film one can imagine. At least, that's what it seems like to me.
Thanks for replying. I heard that in that deleted scene, that Harry Dean Stanton and "Dallas" were actually tranforming into eggs...I never understood that as part of the alien life cycle. So, a queen (alien) isn't needed to produce eggs????
@ManifestPanda Plus, James Cameron did the sequel to Aliens, which some consider superior to the first. But in reality they are in two different genres. Alien is a thriller and Aliens is an action movie.
Okay, but it should be understood that Disney's Pocahontas takes tremendous liberty's with the story of Pocahontas (the love story between her and beardless, blond, American-accented John Smith, for example). But I'd rather say Dances with Wolves shares common motifs with the story of Pocahontas rather that repeats cliches.
Pocahontas was a real person, a ton of adaptions going back as far as the 1800's told the story of a white man falling in love with the enemy. TOTALLY the basis for dances with wolves, lawrence of arabia, and Avatar.
@TheCosmicFireStar Having read the O'Bannon/Shussett script as well as the Giler/Hill rewrite, I would say that it was a good thing the original script was changed. The first script's strength was its ideas, but it was more of a routine B-movie. It lacked the breadth and subtlety of the rewrite, & the dialogue was rather flat and clichéd. "Alien" became an ensemble effort: O/S provided the seed of a terrific idea, and G/H together with Scott, Giger & others ran with it & created a masterpiece.
How did Lawrence of Arabia and Dances with Wolves follow the cliches of Pocahontas? Lawrence of Arabia preceded Pocahontas by three decades and was based off the memoirs of T.E. Lawrence anyways while Dances with Wolves came out years before Pocahontas. If anything, didn't Pocahontas and Avatar imitate Dances with Wolves.
Alien - Resurrection: A room divided in a CRITICAL way. First, Fox wanted to cash in a fourth installment to invite audiences from the previous three films to a new, young crowd for its "scientific second coming". Second, ending a decades long obsession by bringing it back with all technology, which all hell breaks lose and things should had never left alone. Third, somewhat watching a run-of-the-mill sci-fi action thriller which the third film lacks and a generic horror "gore fest" all thrown
The thing that pisses me off about Avatar is that all the dialog is constantly scraping against the PG13 rating, resulting in a whole bunch of self censored sub-cursing and a completely empty experience whenever a human opened their mouth.
Can someone explain what is the scene at 0:45 WTF is that???? I thought maybe it was a crew member transforming into an egg...One of the deleted scenes.
If we're critisising genre films then it should be noted that Alien is no different to those movies you mentioned in that its story is just a reworking of the haunted house creature feature. At its core its just several people running around in a spooky location being picked off one by one by a monster. Films of its base premise were a dime a dozen during the 50's and 60's such as 'The Thing from Another World'.
Yeah... would've been better off to make a xxx parody of it. I dunno, something like, "Alien: Huge-erection". Jus' sayin'.. (Disclaimer: trolls and haters, be advised: couldn't give a flying fortress about your negs; if YOU had thought of it first, you should've put it up! lol!)
200 million dollar movie full of CGI crap. Rated R for violence and, language, and sci-fi terror. I can think of many movies just like Prometheus that go on my "Movies that Make 'Hollywood Sucks' a True Statement" List.
Can we not compare avatar to alien. Alien was a thrilling masterpiece, but James Cameron is no slouch. Avatar is the continuation of the Pocahontas cliche, but so were some great movies like Lawrence of Arabia and Dances with Wolves. I mean come on, star wars was a rescue the princess story and it still kicked ass. Avatar was fun, but Alien was a visceral mindfuck that i'll never forget. But let's not be ironic hipsters that trash other things to feel a false sense of superiority. k?

Alien is the Godfather of all science-fiction. Aliens is one of the greatest movies of all time, but is nothing compared to Alien.
i was VERY young when i was first subjected to this movie and aliens. i was terrified of the dark for a long time lol i always thought thered be an alien hanging from the ceiling or something.. but i grew to love these films with all my heart. R I P H.R. :/
Dark Star is genius, by the way. A 70's classic as far as I'm concerned.
Alien movies are the best thing ever!
Writer of script entitled 'Alien' inadvertently meets HR Giger. . Talk about luck.
I know? It's like it was meant to happen...
@TheCosmicFireStar

neomorph in alien covenant! and more
great documentary for a great film
Love this film!!!!
Dan O' Bannon is hilarious. Such a grouch!
Masterpiece.
It's the model of Harry Dean Stanton they used in the 'cocoon sequence' which was originally deleted from the film, yeah.
i love the creepy looking potted plant behind Ron

I can't look at Dan O Bannon without the first thought in my head being "Pinback".. (Darkstar)

They should have credited "They came from within" by Cronenberg. The concept was really copied from there
There's a HDS Festival in Lexington, KY, I bet they would LOVE to find it and put in on display!
I grew up watching these movies with my brothers back in the 80s I was just a boy then but I loved them I liked the chest burster scenes best

Awesome, thanks for uploading, I was looking for this since it's not feautured on the DVD I have.
Paris? Paris, Texas? No, Paris, France!
I don't normally watch the makings of movies I like cause who cares, but this one is so interesting and almost as fun to watch as the movie
+AMC2283
Lots of people care. Some making-ofs can be boring, but anyone who loves the film enough will watch it all the way through.

Supposedly, a xenomorph can produce eggs in its own without a queen, but its an emergency state that doesn't happen very often.

and Alien is just a slasher in space

the first section of music before the doc starts, with the highpitched repeating pulse. ANy one know where it is from, i cant find it on the OST
There's nothing wrong with cliches as long as they're presented with new and interesting techniques, which all the movies i mentioned do.
The thing that pisses me off about Avatar is that all the dialog is constantly scraping against the PG13 rating, resulting in a whole bunch of self censored sub-cursing and a completely empty experience whenever a human opened their mouth.
The movie was rated 14-A, not R. And really, it was like Alien, it was a really good B-movie
Can someone explain what is the scene at 0:45 WTF is that???? I thought maybe it was a crew member transforming into an egg...One of the deleted scenes.
It is Rated R in America.
@SolidSnake032486 to be honest i feel like avatar was just special effects with a tired premise, pretty to look at but of no real value
@TheCosmicFireStar
I assume you're not ticked off any more?
:)
The dialogue in Avatar was crap, the story was recycled. It did, however, epitomize the whole reason we go to the movies
What is dark star?
@ManifestPanda Amen, my good sir.

WTF?! XD
It was 14 A and a B-Movie

Human Centipede is putridly, awfully, DISGUSTING!
Everything is copying off of everything else! People have doing been it, like forever...
The Flintstones= The Honeymooners
The Monkees=The Beatles
Simba= Kimba
Family Guy= The Simpsons
It's silly to complain about it!
This is sci-if horror, Avatar is just sci-if action. Hollywood sucks overall.
wtf are you talking about?
A Bad Movie.
@SolidSnake032486 Avatar sucks.
Avatar CANNOT compete with the horror of Alien!!!! No matter how much money it's made at the box office... nobody gives a shit about Avatar.
