I just love, love, love how you share your insight into every tutorial...I am a beginner sewist and I am always wishing for more sewer-thinking...I'm picking up the language and terms as I go and you have helped me so much!!! Thanks so much for being a great instructor...Love your videos! Keep up the good work!! E
@@londasews I made a tunic with sleeves ending in a flounce based on your teaching...it has come out beautifully! Wish I could post a photo but can't on you tube. So once again thank you!
Am a beginner to sewing , I needed to make 3 "gathered frills", but your tutorial was so helpful and precise in explaining the difference. My particular problem is attaching the "gathered frill" to the material. The gathers stretch and then bunch at the end - looking so untidy and uneven. Can't seem to get that right. Don't know if anyone else has this problem Flounces are so much neater and especially your method of attaching them. Thank you - you are a lifesaver.
For scootching and bunching of fullness...it is all in PINNING and being willing to sew over the pins. I've done it for over 50 years. Use fine, nice glasshead pins like Clover 2501. Sew BETWEEN the rows of gathering stitches when attaching. BOSS that fabric around!
This was exactly what I was looking for! I'm working on a few bathing suits and I was looking for an easy way to make a flounce top. Now I think I'll do a cute flounce swim skirt, too ;)
Thank you so much for making it so easy. I have watched it made but the method was so rigorous and a little difficult to understand. Thank you so much.
I love flounce on tops. I had a few blouses that had ruffles, however, I like the looks of this flounce better. It's not as bulky as a gathered ruffle. The blouse that has the flounce all around it is something that I'd like to try.
I saw a woman wearing a tank top with tierd fliunces/ruffles as sleeve caps. CA. You tell me how to create that look to add to a ready made knit shell tank top please?
If I am making a neck flounce in three pieces (a back and two front pieces to accommodate a key hole) would I need to add any seam allowance and if so how much? I am using a cotton muslin to make a chemise.
Thanks for your compliment. Not yet, but I'll put that on my list to do. If you can send me a picture of exactly what you want: mail it to me at londa@londas-sewing.com
Hi Ronda.Ur a pro with cicular ruffles. Cud u pls show me how to cut a ruffle that actually proceeds like a wrap( as in a wrap dress) on the full bodice and is kinda held /tucked at the side of yr waist with the cascsding ruffles that come cascading down to one side
You could - but I would NOT sew them together - that won't work. The main thing there is to make the radius of the circle you create as long as you want your skirt to be. You could have a multi-layers of ruffle skirt looking kind of like my tops in my Flirty Flounces Pattern www.londas-sewing.com/product-page/flirty-flounces-sewing-pattern-booklet-pdf-delivery by stitching the upper part of each flounce to a base. Check that out.
Your demystifiying allows new EXTRA LG, SLEEVELESS HUGE TOPS to be repurposed into needed FLOUNCES, Had been disappointed I owned them. NOT NOW, Yippee!
Length of a ruffle - do you mean the depth? That would be the length from the base of where the flounce is attached to where you want it to end. In my video, the first measurement is for the base of the flounce - whether that be, say at a waist, or wherever the flounce is attached. Sorry I just found this, and that your question has me a bit confused.
Thank you for 5he calculation but I want to draft my neckline flounce on my wrap dress and have the collar end taper to nothing, so it doesn’t cause bulk at the from of the dress. How would you do this?
You would just have to cut the depth, the radius, of the circle to what you desire - nothing in this cased - at that location. Cut it full, put it on, then cut from the exterior edge to look as you desire. This assumes it is a cut edge on a knit fabric that doesn't ravel.
No, they are not the same. A Flounce has no gathering where it joins to the garment as it is truly a split 'donut' whose inner circumference is attached to the garment where a Ruffle is GATHERED along one edge where it is attached to the garment.
Just cut the flounce as deep as you want it - where you want it. It doesn't need to be the same depth all around. I like to cut it the longest I might like, then trim shorter as desired.
Changing the width of the 'circle' is also certainly do-able. I've done that often. Experiment and have fun. The inner arc will remain the same, it's just the width from that inner arc to the outer edge that you would change.
I agree with everyone here who commented - very good tutorial with clear instructions. Thank you for simplifying this process.
Ruffles frills never heard of flounces, so glad you are so good at what you do , confused but will watch you anyway, stay teaching God bless
No one taught this math, only you. Thankyou ❤
I'm glad it helped you.
This is the best video I’ve been able to find on measuring for flounces. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!

Thank you! You are the best, I've long wondered how to do this, and thought I'd be stuck gathering ruffles the rest of my life.
Exactly what I needed! Thank you for a clear and concise tutorial!
And thank YOU for taking time to comment. I have a new list of topics - maybe sometime this summer I'll be adding to my channel...
Wow amazing beautiful video, always watch like
Thanks much. Done in a professional Studio which I certainly can't repeat at home, but I hope you subscribe and watch others I've done as well...
Thank you! You have really simplified this for me. Don't feel intimidated to try this out now.
Have fun!

I know this is the technique is what I need.. but I am new at sewing, and I didn't grasp this enough to feel confident cutting my fabric just yet.

Thank you for this class, how would you make this flounce irregular?
Simply change the width or depth (how long) the flounce is. I've often done this. I usually 'wing it' as I cut. Go for it - lots of fun!
Muchas gracias por esta maravillosa clase
I want to put a flounce around the neck to make a sort of collar. Do I measure the neck opening then use your calculation?

but plz tell me how to.calculate the length of a ruffle required for a dress nd how to draw the circle according to dress length
Length of a ruffle - do you mean the depth? That would be the length from the base of where the flounce is attached to where you want it to end. In my video, the first measurement is for the base of the flounce - whether that be, say at a waist, or wherever the flounce is attached. Is it possible to create flounces out of light weight fabrics?
Thank you. Its help me a lot
Thank you for a nice explanation
Why do my ruffles sleeves stick straight up or out when I sew them on a blouse? what am I doing wrong?
It is likely the fabric. If you send a picture to me at londa@londas-sewing.com I'll be happy to look and reply.
Thank you for 5he calculation but I want to draft my neckline flounce on my wrap dress and have the collar end taper to nothing, so it doesn’t cause bulk at the from of the dress. How would you do this?

I want to make a tiered skirt with bias cut flat tiers...any suggestions?
Just dive in and give it a try - with inexpensive fabric the same weave/weight of your project.
Awesome!

is flounce and ruffle are same?
No, they are not the same. A Flounce has no gathering where it joins to the garment as it is truly a split 'donut' whose inner circumference is attached to the garment where a Ruffle is GATHERED along one edge where it is attached to the garment.
How would you make an asymmetrical flounce on the sleeve hem. Where one side is longer that the other.
Just cut the flounce as deep as you want it - where you want it. It doesn't need to be the same depth all around. I like to cut it the longest I might like, then trim shorter as desired.
Just cut the widest you want for the depth of the flounce, then trim narrower where you want it less wide.
Hi I making a wedding dress and the Flounces start small on the waist going down its bigger, how do I cut the to get it bigger on the bottom?
Cut it the widest that you want, then trim to narrower width up where you want it smaller - all from the exterior edge
Linda....I'm in need of your help please I need two flounce that I can connect at the shoulder 30 inches long for a sleeve for a dress.

I need to know the size of the fabric to make the one from your top. I don't want to waste fabric.
Make your pattern first - then lay it out to determine fabric needed.
rather stick to mathematics :D much more reliable
