  • It's a project that could generate a lot of money in Arizona and, according to some, could bring new life to a town that was once in Arizona's mining country. However, religious and environmental worries meant the project is now mired in a court battle. FOX 10's Lauren Clark has more on the Oak Flat mine proposal.

The problem is the legislators, both State and National. I worked on this mining project and others for 10 years; I gave up because of the legislators--Arizona and National. First, a foreign mining company does not pay Federal or State taxes. (I checked Resolution's annual report for their operation north of the Great Salt Lake, in Utah.)
Further, In AZ there is a law on the books since 1980's that mining companies (even foreign ones with terrible environmental histories)--can use all the water they want, anywhere they want. The same thing was happening near where I lived in Green Valley at the Rosemont mine, also in the National Forest. How can there not be a be a big pit because the mined copper will be mixed with mud and the mud will be will be taken elsewhere to take the copper out. There will be a hole down to 7,000 feet. So the surrounding trees of the forest will not have groundwater support for its deep roots. Third, the U.S. Congress got in involved--but not to save the National Forest. U.S. Senator put an earmark on the mining project at midnight on a "must pass" the "must pass" Defense Bill. He got a $7,500 contribution from Resolution Copper. (Source "Open Secrets."

On December 5, 2023 Bryan Seppala came to Apache Junction city council meeting and spoke. It was not an open meeting so I waited outside the door for him to ask questions. I asked about money's he was giving Apache Junction, scholarship and money to the nonprofits. I asked if money always smoothed things over for them and his answer was sometimes. I asked about the fact that he said they were over 7,000 feet and that I guess that sounds better than 1.3 miles. I talked to him about the water that keeps filling the mine shaft and was told after treating the water some would be sent down to Picket Post. I stated that most wells in Arizona are at about 1,000 feet and if they are pumping water from down 1.3 miles in a deep aquifer and dumping it the wells at a 1,000 feet would go dry. The desert doesn't have enough water as is and to poison a deep aquifer and then just dump this poison water is wrong. We need to think about the end result of what they are doing before it is to late to fix the problem. It is going to take California 20 years to fix their mistake and life's were lost.

I am from Globe Arizona , closer to San Carlos about 15 miles from this site. Born and raised here. Have spent MANY days at Oak flats and have seen very few Apaches in this area at any time of the year and now it is sacred to them!! I CALL B.S.

I am from San Carlos. Those people are idiots. They are those that didn’t grow up on the Rez but all of a sudden become traditional. I honest feel embarrassed by them . They make us look bad.

It was the dwelling place of the San Carlos Apaches for centuries--there are still stones lining their gardens and dwellings in cliffs there--of course burial grounds of centuries of their ancestors. They were moved out of the special land with even a live stream and oaks that had acorns that could be eaten right off the huge towering trees by the U.S. Gov because they wanted the beautiful place for the National Forest and a campground. The Apaches were moved up to the desert west of Globe, 24 miles away. Even today, they go to Oak Flat for certain ceremonies and prayers for their ancestors and certain ceremonies for the girls when they reach puberty.
