Definitively how to change your axis rotation by hand position at release would be the icing of the cake for this video. Or maybe another video? Thanks for all the help.
I started bowling in the late 50s and by the summer of 1961 shot the first sanctioned 300 at that 16 lane house. I threw almost a full spinner which left a wide track on my ball. I used tape as you show when I practiced and it showed how the ball spun for about 30 feet and gradually the roll got higher until it became what we called a 3/4 roll. It went pretty straight until it started to roll. That's when it made a left turn into the pocket. The lanes were maple and pine, maintained by lane man who kept the lanes oiled and buffed. Instead of patterns like we see today, his goal was to buff and oil each lane the same every night. Back then it didn't matter where you bowled or what lane you were on, each lane played a little differently. I was successful because I could get a sharp hook into the pins. It was fun, especially the pot games. I wonder if the guys still have those. Thanks for listening. I could probably go on all night but it will be another time. Bob
I believe there is a proper angle the ball needs to be rotating as it hits the pocket. If it is too little (vertical) it leaves a weak ten. But if there is too much axis rotation (horizontal) then its blasts the pin around the ten. The ten pin issue supersedes the problem of needing more hook, which I address with a ball change and keep my axis rotation constant and modest. Plus, not being big or young I lose too much power if I'm not behind the ball.
Nice! It’s interesting seeing how hard it was for your bowler to keep that 90 degree shot on the right side of the headpin, yet PDW makes it look so easy.
Thanks for this video. I've been working on my release and the wrist movement, and finally have more revs. But my axis rotation is less than 10º. Now I know what I need to do if want the ball to hook more.Thanks.
thank you looking back this could have been my isue tonight had to bowl down 1 to 5 board casue juts wasnt gettting hook bowling my normal shot getting my ball detoxed but will also focus on this when i can without chicken winging or dropping the ball since bowl no thumb and coming around the ball too much it makes it not hook but thank you for the tips will practice this next leauge
Will do on video about release in a few weeks. We set this up as a series of videos. Axis tilt will be the next in the series. As with the Avengers they may not be in complete chronological order. But they will all connect.
I struggle to execute the mechanics of access rotation correctly. There are many times where instead of bringing my hand around the ball, I’m rotating my wrist. Sometimes so extremely that I end up with my hand almost on top of the ball and it being in a flat spin while it’s skidding. Any tips on internalizing the correct motion?
Storm has a find your ball function on their website, and they ask spin axis. Could you do a video showing an axis of 50 degrees and 70 degrees? I guess average is 50-70 but don't really know and would like to know before I spend 100+ dollars on a ball. Also would like to see the difference in axis height. I know what my ball looks like when I throw it, would just like to put in the proper information.
For some reason I cannot bowl with my thumb in. I cup and just use my midddle and ring finger. High game was a 258. Not bad! Played on a work league for 3 years. I don't take it seriously just fun to bowl!
When in was a kid my axis rotation was about 80 degrees or so throwing short pin urethane balls, now it’s between 30-60 depends on the lanes and pattern
I love how the first ball with hand up the back the ball exits the pin deck in the 9 pin spot, Then with just 45 degrees of rotation the ball runs over the 8 pin that's a major adjustment!
I'm a fairly new bowler average about 120 just got my own ball not too long ago left handed and have no idea about pap or any of that stuff. I have problems with my release on how to get around the ball or whether to stay behind the ball any tips or videos on that would be appreciated. Basically I don't know how to get axis rotation
Andrew Ashley I would suggest that at your release, your elbow should be pointed behind you (not flung out) and arm close to your body. Your hand should be positioned behind the ball. Practice that and depending on what the ball is doing, you can start to move your hand position further towards the side of the ball. Elbow should always be pointed to the back and not chicken winged
@@gwenstizzy thank you for the advice. the big problem that I have I can throw the ball perfectly straight but no matter if I use a wrist positioner or a ball designed for hook it's still just go straight into the pins I don't know what I'm doing wrong
Andrew Ashley 2 questions: what ball are you throwing? And how fast are you throwing it down the lane? If your ball is rotating in the right direction (clockwise for lefties) it should hook so long as you’re not gunning it
@@atvandrew Ok then that ball should hook for you. Try slowing down your ball speed to give it time to read the lane. Good luck and let us know how you do
Arthur, How is it possible that he pushes the ball to the left gutter and the ball still moves to the 10 pin ? I’ve been hooking incorrectly I’ve been “moving” rotating the hand like a hand shake from the side of the ball but I see here he is like slapping mosquitoes from his left ear motion with his right hand ?
That is a good place to be. Id suggest to play with othe angles for different length patterns. If you are on a pattern with 33 feet of oil that may be too much being two handed makes it a little easier to change your axis rotation.
So I've been trying to get this for bit now just now getting into bowling seriously my question is is the release the same from straight all the way to 90 or does it change?
I'm in the same boat... starting out "for real this time" and am seriously battling to get any hook using any method. I'm getting a good "forward roll", but when trying to hook, the ball goes off to the left with no apparent axis rotation... just a ball rolling forward in the wrong direction. I know my release method is the problem, but I guess practice practice practice is what it's going to take.
I have a question.. when u do axis rotation are you keeping your wrist straight or snapping it? Are you rotating your wrist/arm without snapping it? Thank u so much.
Ok ... I just got a Astro Physix. The SOB really hooks at about the 42 ft break point. When I say hooks, if I'm lucky it'll take out the 4 & 7 pins before dying a quick death. I start on 42, through to the 15. I think my problem is speed. I have a rev rate of 200-217. Just watched your ball speed video. Another coach suggested shortening the 3rd step (4 step approach from the rear dots.) and stretching out the slide. ... Now I'll shut up and listen! Thanks.
Hey friend I also have the Astro Physix and yes the SOB really does hook 😀😃that is funny. If you lived were me and my buddies live we could fix that in 5 minutes. Other then keep moving left ask those guys or ladies that are behind the counter at your bowling alley they will help you like they did me . Away from game for 27 years 10 months of good practice in the 190-200 average and going up. I also took a lesson very reasonable. You will master the Astro. Still laughing at SOB HOOKS.😀😃😄
axis rotation, sorry. I have a clockwise release with various finishes from straight behind to 9 o'clock thumb position . I'm coming back 30 yrs. later . Any thoughts would be appreciated . thx, Tony S
Most pro shops drill a ball's thumb hole directly below the middle point of the finger holes which forces your hand to twist to the left if you are a right hander in order to get your thumb into the thumb hole. I find this uncomfortable and puts your hand into an unnatural position. To me it seems better to have the thumb hole placed to the left side of the middle finger hole. My question is: Does this in any way affect the axis rotation?
Axis rotation happens as we come around the ball at release, how much we come around the ball determines how much rotation we have. Where you drill your thumbhole is a compfort thing my thumbhole is directly below my indext finger. I have a friend whose thumbhole is far past his indext finger another that is under the middle finger. It works for them. Drillings are A personel Thing. Hummmm...that might be a great topic to discuss with people.
What you want is an offset thumb position. You move the thumb so that when you lay your hand on the ball with the fingers inserted into their holes, you can palm the ball.
Professional bowler Tom Smallwood has his ball drilled that way. It's a little unorthodox but might be worth a try. I might have one of my older balls redrilled that way to give it a try.
@@ArtOfBowling That's interesting! What's a full roller mean? Also the drill holes seem to be so different. I'm definitely interested in trying it. He might not be a top bowler most years but Smallwood is one of my favorites. Always good to see him on TV.
When you come around the ball still keep your thumb at 1 o'clock and lead with the index finger through the target as the arm fillows the thumb through the shot.
This is true, staying underneath the ball is what controls your axis tilt. Axis rotation is the effect you are putting on the ball as you turn the it at the bottom of the swing.
QUESTION: the ball is smashing the back of my ring finger on the fingernail when I throw, and causing it to go black and cause a lot of pain, and have tried everything I can think of to remedy the situation from different inserts to drilling angle changes. Help!!!
