    Thank you for the zygo repotting. I've been looking forward for more videos about these type of orchids. That said, I really really hope Bendy will pull through and you'll get to enjoy him for many many years. I have a parrot and I would do anything to have him healthy and happy. I send you lots of hugs, lots of support and good health vibes sent Bendy's way.

    My zygos are simultaneously the easiest/most vigorous and the most temperamental... but even when they are struggling they always are the hardest to genuinely stress/kill. They seem to be survivors and when they get in trouble it's a slow struggle, never an abrupt crisis like so many other types I have seem to experience. I have one related hybrid that has been *destroyed* a number of times (it's just been unlucky) by our cats (being knocked over) and though it always look haggard, it just keeps on going.

    So sorry to hear about Bendy. I hope you can find the problem and that's easily treated. I was surprised to hear that they have to put him anesthetic to take blood tests though, I have a friend who studies bird malaria and they take blood samples safely whilst they are awake through little glass capillaries through a vein in the wing. She does this with wild birds that are pretty small (~13cm wingspan) without any ill effects. I'm no expert though and hopefully he won't need the blood test but maybe it's worth asking the vet if this is an option if you need to go down that route. Maybe that sample would be too small for the tests to work but worth a shot. We all have our fingers crossed for you that it all works out ok xxx

    I wish more places knew the differences between Terrestrial and Epiphytic Orchid requirements and care. I bought a a Zygopetelum potted in coconut chunks. It shriveled and lost plenty of roots. I am trying waterculture to restore it and now it's recovering.

    Hi danny! Would you say a cymbidium orchid should be potted in a similar mix to what you use for zygos? Can a sort of terrestrial mix like this be used with self watering pots? I have a cymbidium, it looks to be potted in a bark and coco husk chip mix right now. It is doing fine, but just drinks so much water, I have a hard time keeping up with it. It also has some little grass shoots growing in its pot. I keep removing them but they keep coming back. So I think I just need to repot it. I'm not sure what to repot it in though, as I've never worked with terrestrial or semiterrestrial orchids. Any advice(or maybe a vid on cymbidiums!) is appreciated! Also, I'm sending good vibes to you and bendy! I hope you get figured out what is wrong with him and he gets better!

  • @janegao5747

    What's the size of the pot? My overgrown very crowded Zygo is in a 10 inch pot. I am debating whether I should just repot it in a bigger pot or divide it. What would be your recommendation? It stopped blooming since last summer. It would put off stems but failed to flower. I know I need to do something about it. It is so crowded that it doesn't have any place for new growth.

  • @leeheath7011

    Could it be inhalant injury from the Aroxol? From my research it is not safe for birds when aerosolized. I have had parrots for over 15 yrs and it really sounds like it could be the culprit. It doesn't need to be in the same room or that close, not if windows or doors are open (even infrequently) or contaminated clothing is exposed to the bird. It would be similar to Teflon inhalation injury.
    I don't usually comment, but this worried me

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  5 років тому

      Hi, thanks for the concern, but it's not Aroxol or Teflon fumes, or perfumes or things in the air, I am careful with that :)

  • @Disabilify
    @Disabilify 5 років тому

    Dani, I keep hearing zygos dont mind standing in water and want to ask you if you have heard or tried the same. I've had several zygos and just saw them die no matter what I tried. I also have an Ianclarkara which I neglected and just left potted on moss and bark and in a saucer with some water and noticed it put out a lot of growths. So, I'm not sure if this whole "wet feet" method is valid? I'm just scared of fungus. I do have good air circulation and my zygos are in clay pots and my room temperature is about 73 to 75F. What do you suggest?

    I'm wondering how this orchid is doing since the repot? I just bought one. when's the best time to transplant? I believe its after dormancy & once new growth has started... please advice
    ans sorry about your pet bird

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  5 років тому +1

      Hi Maria, they are actually blooming now :) Zygos don't have a dormancy, so you can repot as you see new roots growing. Typically this happens after flowering, as the new growth matures, but do observe your plant, rather than following the general rule. When you see root tips from the new growth, it's a good time to repot ;)

  • @PritneyBears
    @PritneyBears 5 років тому +1

    My zygo sends new growths before maturing the pseudobulb, just after flowering is done. The actual bulb arises from the base of the older growth when the new growth starts sending the flower spikes.

  • @90skid97

    putting oyster shells into orchid medie? Isn't that against all logic? They want it acidic and people even use rainwater as normal tap water can be hard and have minerals in it like calcium. I assume it would neutralize the acidic medium and make it break down faster as well.

    According to the AOS zygopetalums are true epiphytes. Are you sure that you are remembering this right? Best wishes to you and your family (including Bendy of course)

    • @MissOrchidGirl
