Thanks so much. I experienced root rot switching to semi hydro and lost all my roots to mush like you did. Such a relief I did the right thing as you advised and repotted back to semi hydro.
Great videos! I checked out your channel bc of a mention from Miss Dani Orchid Girl. You are so articulate and explain things very well! I appreciate how you discuss transitional issues with SH and encourage us not to give up! I have a Zygo plant as well. It's super unruly and it's got some accordion leaves but it seems to be doing well in SH with two new bulbs and two shoots. Been in SH for a year now. Thanks again.
Thank you for your kind words Danielle! I'm so glad to hear that you didn't give up on the system: it can be somewhat tricky if not executed properly the first time, and can really turn people off. Thank you so much for watching, happy growing!
I can't begin to tell you how much you have helped me with my transition! It seems like every video I watch I learn so much more than I thought I would. Thank you just doesn't seem enough but Thank You all the same! I have been able to let go of the guilt and get some pretty fantastic orchids going!
Thank you! Michael for sharing! I enjoy watching your Orchid video's. I am a beginner and learning a lot by watching you. Again thank you for sharing! And my you have a blessed New Year!

Hey Michael! I just wanted to tell you, that if you put the cut spikes on a windowsill without direct sunlight, they will last much longer. I don't know how long that will be on Zygopetalum spikes, but my Phalaenopsis spike was in bloom for a month. I think it's worth mentioning. Have a nice day :)
Hi Michael, this video is 5 years old, I do not see any updates on this particular orchid, the (Zygopetalum), that you switched to Semi-Hydro. Do you still have this orchid in your collection? How is it doing? Thank you for this wonderful channel!!!
Fingers crossed.. I won't take the leap to Zygopetalums, heard they are really tempermental. I drilled my first glass today! I used it to pot up the largest one of a set (deflasked several months) of Phrag Autumn Fire x schlimii hybrid seedlings. only three are going to s/h for now, the rest in the recommended orchiata/perlite/carbon/oyster shell blend...
That's a great first step, Kimberly! See how they do, and you can always adjust your system. It's good to get a feel for things slowly rather than converting all of your collection at once!
I know this problem well. I've killed about 5 Zygos trying them in SH. Ive come to the conclusion that that it is not a viable growing medium. I saw somewhere that Zygos might be semi terrestrial. I think that SH is just too airy for this species. I've even tried trying to transitioning them on a heat mat...didn't work. I managed to get one or two bulbs to put out new growths by leaving them sphagmum moss. But unfortunately all the others were a lost cause.
Wow, I'll definitely keep you posted! I'm hoping this won't be the case, but who knows. I post orchid updates around the end of each month, so check back to see if this guy makes it!
Really? I have a zygo in bark mix and it likes to stay almost constantly wet. The minute the bark dries out the pseudobulbs begin to shrivel. I keep it well watered and fertilized often and it just put out 3 flower spikes from the same bulb and new growth every other month.
Caitlin Cooper I seen your response to Michael’s Orchids- Zygos in SH. You felt that it wasn’t a good idea. I have Zygo that I have to do something with. I am considering SH however I have never used SH for any of my orchids. This is my first Zygo. It is a beautiful “Blue Blazes ‘Barrier Ford”. I am a bark user and sometimes sphagnum moss for the orchids I am raising. I wasn’t sure if bark would work of the Zygo?? I am not sure what it is in now, I think sphagnum moss and ?? I was happy to read that you had success using bark with your zygos? Is there anything else you would suggest? Thanks for your information.
@@jackiewinges-beach5585 I just use a medium bark mix (you dont want really large chunks like for phalaenopsis). Sphagnum wouldnt be bad mixed in with the bark. Just water and fertilize it a bunch and give it bright light and it should be happy!
Hello! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and love for these beauties! I have the same plant and I have used your system! I have one question, after you placed the plant in the water with the kelp max, you put the timer for one hour. Do you drain it afterwards? And do you just water the plant weekly for one hour? I am not sure how to water these? I do mist them with water everyday
When old roots start to decay, is it better to remove those roots or do a weekly flushing ? Your videos are always so informative. I refer to them a lot. Thank you
It is better to remove them, we do not have to repot the plant and put rotten material in the new substrate; it will be infected, the new substrate has to be pure and fresh. However, when a plant shows us that doesn't like a substrate (e.g. semi-hydroponics) and we carry on a formula just because we (humans) like it, it is totally wrong. A plant that lost all its root system has a story to narrate. Namely, it does not like, it does not support our (human) formula. The most proper substrate for Zygo is that of cymbidium, supported by inorganic materials: pumice, seramis, zeolite, lava, vermiculite, etc.
Not so much the wrong time so much as I made some poor choices. If I had trimmed the flower spikes when I converted the plant to S/H, it would have gone into active growth mode. Either way, the pre-existing root system would have rotted, the big difference is that a new, adapted root system would be much further along by now.
Hi can you give me more info on Kelp Max. I live in the U.K. and have tried to buy it on eBay, but the kelp max on sale there is in a different bottle and says it's for aquarium fish??? Is this the same product Michael?
They Zygopetalum is doing well! You can check out my October orchid collection update to see its progress or wait until the end of this month for the November update. It’s slowly putting down its new roots system and getting settled in the pot!
Hi. I have one, it's been doing great. I noticed the other week that it has a walnut size clump growing near the base. It's not a bulb. It's weird looking. Does anyone know what it is?
Thanks so much. I experienced root rot switching to semi hydro and lost all my roots to mush like you did. Such a relief I did the right thing as you advised and repotted back to semi hydro.

Thanks. I have been enjoying watching your videos. I'm trying semi-hydro on a few plants so your videos have been very informative and encouraging.
This was such a great instructional video, Michael. Thank you

Love your kichen and your apartment and thank you
Hell! I know that the Zygo are very dfclt growers so i do not have them))) But always like to see who tries to make them to survive! Happy growing!
Haha, let's hope I can pull it off then! Happy growing to you too Svetlana!
Now this is what an orchid video should be like. . . , visual details!!!
Gracias for sharing so many educated tips.😍

Thank you Nami, I have noticed that! My last spikes lasted quite a while using that method, thank you for tuning in!

How did you drilled the holes in the glass container? I need to do the same

The leaves all felloff my orchid and all I have is the roots, is there a chance wi will resprout
Do you think it was the wrong time to repot the first time you did it?

I am new to orchid, can you tell the solution you spayed on the roots, thank
Hydrogen peroxide is more than enough, I don’t use Physan anymore!
How or where do U get your glass containers with holes?? Thanks!
How much water do u leave in reservoir
I am don't understand what you're soaking...? There are no roots to take up anything liquid. Can you explain it to me if you have time?
How are your zygos doing in SH?

I'm afraid it isn't the same product, and I believe kelpmax is only available in the us! But try to find a good kelp based equivalent!
Hey Michael. How is the Zygo going??
