fireb0rn not knowing you could kill the spitty plant things in greenpath because he just avoids them in speedruns is like a billionaire not knowing the average price of a loaf of bread
killing those guys by reflecting their projectiles is literally the intended way to beat them. it's honestly more impressive that you never figured that out
I'm also slightly mindboggled that fireborn of all people didn't know this. It's like the moment when I told my boss who is a legit genius about a function in some software that he had no idea about
It took me a while to figure out how the Journal rando works, but for me it pretty much revolutionized the whole game for me. There is finally an incentive to kill enemies (other than grinding for geo). There's so many checks you're pretty much never going to find yourself hunting for that last lore tablet you forgot about; so many to the point where you almost wish you won't get movement progression early because it's easy to get overwhelmed. And there's also the opportunity of getting a really long run by channelling your inner Skurry and having to Attune the whole Hall of Gods for a progression check. You know, fun!
I love how there were so many conversations about 'Oh hey, The Shrumal Ogres have the Lumafly Lantern! We can farm those!" and then when a new lumafly lantern pops up at 14:27 there's no hesitation despite the now increased chance of it being fake (I don't know if the Hunter's Journal rewards have to be the actual item or can still be cursed) but I'm surprised chat didn't remember. Either way, it's exactly what I expected from this kind of chaos
"Even I'm not that dumb" at 2:10 had me laughing out loud. Also I'm certain this is something we'll see in the next few months before the release of Silksong as fire gets more and more desperate for new gameplay.
@@OriNyte I guess I shouldn't have said "again", since to the best of my knowledge the "within one year" commitment that comes due this summer is the first they've said of a timetable.

This looks like it would drive anyone insane before they could finish it, holy shit. Randomizers can already be a bit frustrating but when there's so many curses everywhere disguised as normal items and they all suck so much to get and make everything even harder?? I'm impressed you finished this lmao.
I feel like you should have watched Scurry's video. They were originally planning to go with something semi-reasonable (I think either 30 or 40, I forget), but were talked into doing 69 for the memes, and suffered tremendously for their hubris. And you're surprised by how awful it is with even more curses than they had.
I recently did a vanilla run that was a ton of fun for me and brought a fair amount of challenge back to the game. I did max% with no dash, no spell or nail upgrades, no health or soul upgrades. The only things that I was unable to do at my skill level was Pantheon 2 and 3, but there were several events that I was able to do after a few tries, including Colo 3 and Pantheon 1 that were a huge challenge! It also forced me to learn a couple fireball skips that were necessary but I'd never tried before. Shamelessly inspired by Glimmering Realm, my favorite non-rando mod.
You and Skurry got the most cursed runs with this... mine ended up giving me insanely good luck and I beat it in under an hour. I run randomizers all the time and have never gotten that good luck before.
Seeing this for the first time halfway through my first cursed randomizer. Left CDash was locked behind killing a Kingsmould for the first time and right slash was locked behind the lore tablet in White Palace.
i found the reflecting thingy out because i watched a skurry hk bingo where he had to reflect projectiles and shoot them back at the creature they came from
Curses seem so punishing; they should put like... a cleanse item in the pool with optional duplicates. So like you could get lucky and cleanse all your curses late into a run if you find it.
Good god. This was hard to watch as an edited vod, this must have been so much worse in person. I'm sorry you had to do this, but your suffering was beautiful to watch.
I'm not a speedrunner, but I can't imagine trying without already knowing everything about the game. Such as how to defeat every enemy. Even the ones I run past in a speed run. But I guess I see people speedrunning new games well before they can thoroughly learn the whole game.
I feel like curse runs need some way to not front-load all the easily accessible checks with curses, since that's always what happens and it MASSIVELY slows down everything else. That, and a lot of these permanent curses seem like they wouldn't be at all fun to deal with permanently, though I suppose that's down to personal -masochism- preference.
It feels like there should be a curse that increases the number of curses by 1, or one that gives a chance that any charm (or any non-essential items) picked up will be useless
Hunter's Journal rando. What can possibly go wrong? I can't wait, lol. fireb0rn: I turned on killing enemies giving abilities, that could take eternity for some of them, especially with eng-game locations like Kingdom's Edge. But I turned off Grimmkin Flame, because these are tedious. I mean, I totally get it and I agree, but that sounds funny in context of what cursed rando You are doing. Room rando, lmao. That would be even more cursed, lol. Also Your Hollow Knight vids starts reminding me of Minecraft. Why? Because in the golden age of that great game, people often used mods and mod packs, which made their gameplay unique to their. And You are *not* just doing cursed Hunter's Journal, but also keep Your other mods and settings on, which kinda makes this game unique to You and You only. Exactly like Minecraft mods in old UA-cam videos. That's the same vibe to me. Personalizing the game to Your liking. Lmao. Fire learns that he can deflect projectiles from Gulkas (these enemies in green Path that spits on You). Tbh, I didn't knew that at first myself. But I really got it quickly. I were also killing them with spells first. This Hunter's Journal rando is definitely something with the curses on. You killed the Fool Eater… and got the Pain curse. And that "Fool" text fits well, lol. It definitely *is* a FOOL Eater… IMO Omen is too cursed. You are already downgraded much and every time You take a hit, You are getting more and more downgrades. And the game is getting harder too, because of Cursed Crossroads, areas with worse enemies and so on. Imagine getting Omen with 20 enemies to kill and getting hit like 4-5 times due to being underpowered by, let's say, Darkness, lower Nail damage, less spells, charms… that's really too much IMO. It's interesting, but it's too cursed. Oh God. And this really happened. I said that the Omen is broken… At least it *was* dreamer…
i have a question. something like curses, which adds pickups, do they replace items or how does it manage being more pickups than it would normally be?
there’s an option in the rando settings for the curses to either replace items or be added to the item pool iirc. if you’re adding them to the pool, i know that the rando adds duplicate geo rocks if you have geo rock checks enabled, but otherwise idk for sure how it deals with extra pickups. my guess has always been it’ll add extra checks to shops/grubfather/seer/etc.

Both Fireborn and Skurry's first item was Xero entry
I think the most terrifying part of the Journal Randomizer is that it means it's possible for Void Idol to be required.
The mod gives you options to decide if you want stuff like the void idol entries or the weathered mask to be included as checks
This ACTUALLY happened when Skurry did the journal rando, King's Brand was behind Void Idol Lv.2
**Get void idol level three to get the mantis claw.**

@MonishRules how the hell do you do low percent in a randomizer without spoiling the entire thing?
Yeah, Fire's thing is usually more explicit difficulty mods, where Skurry does a lot of not pure challenge mods but with the most awful settings.
