    Wow is all I can say. I lived out of a hotel in Kenner Louisiana for about 6 months after Hurricane Katrina. I was down there as a contractor to help with the initial rebuilding effort of the low voltage lines ( telephone/ internet/ TV). To make along story short... at that time there really weren’t any restaurants open... but luckily for us, the great people of Louisiana actually invited us to eat dinner at their homes while we were installing the new lines to their houses.
    My first ever seafood boil was in some guys backyard who I had never met before. This video took me back to that special moment. Sorry to blab but you stirred up that memory. Awesome video Russ.

      These tools makes a boil fool proof. He is right! These boils are expensive so why risk ruining those shrimp, crabs or crawfish when you have a way of insuring a perfect boil everytime. Thanks for checking it out Greg! Cheers brother!

    Really enjoyed this seafood boil demo! Always loved steamed oysters on a saltine with a splash of Tabasco. And a good beer to wash it down! A holiday tradition in my wife's family I always enjoyed, that is 'til the old timers passed away.

    We just did 46 lbs of shrimp, and 30 lbs of snow crab clusters for about 30 friends, I have always followed your steps to the boil and absolutely love it. Next time we do this I am going to do the citrus last just like you did today. Great video Russ and thanks for all the tips. We love it up here in Kansas City area!

That was a 80 quart pot, and I really don't remember just how many lemons and oranges that was, but it looked to be a large bag of lemons and a small bag of oranges. Of course if you cutting this in half, you wouldn't need that many. Hope this helps

    • @SmokyRibsBBQ
      @SmokyRibsBBQ  5 років тому

      Yeah, boiled shrimp is more of a Gulf Coast thing. I was raised on them. I have done as little as 5 pounds of shrimp before, and I normally just do them on the kitchen stove. Thanks for checking the video out, bowhunter, I appreciate it!

    Question: do y’all de-vein the shrimp or do you just peel and eat? At the one shrimp boil I’ve been to we just peeled and ate them, but other people told me you have to take the vein out before you cook them. They tasted just fine to me.

    • @SmokyRibsBBQ
      @SmokyRibsBBQ  2 роки тому

      Not on a boil this size. It's simply way to many shrimp to be feasible. I do devein on smaller batches, but it's completely not necessary. Some countries such as Japan never devein period. It's just not practiced like it is here in the US. The vein will not harm you and in all honesty you can't even tell that it's there. I think it's more of a mind thing with people. We boil crawfish also, and they never get deveined unless it's done while removing the shell prior to popping it in your mouth.

      For boiling I like a medium to large sized shrimp. 31/35 per pound is about right. Enjoy the boil and have fun! Remember, once you throw the shrimp in, turn the burner off, and 15 to 30 seconds later start cooling it down with the boil boss. Once cool, ( below 150°F) let soak for 20 minutes with lid off. This will give you good results and the shrimp will peel easily. Enjoy!

  • @christopherbiegel9553
    @christopherbiegel9553 5 років тому

    I always juice my lemons before adding the juice and cut half's to the pot in the beginning. You guys talking about adding the citrus at the end has sounds like a great idea for that punch of fresh flavor. I was thinking that I could add the juiced lemon half's at the beginning, because I do think cooked citrus adds something, and then add the juice at the end. Any thoughts?

    • @SmokyRibsBBQ
      @SmokyRibsBBQ  5 років тому

      I normally add it all towards the beginning but after tasting this, I will certainly be adding it at the end. All of it. For even more citrus flavor, zest the lemons and add that zest in during the cool down. I have done that before and it works great! More work, but worth it.

      Just depends on how many pounds your wanting to do. Big boils require big pots. You can easily do 20 pounds in a 80 quart pot

      @@gilbertogonzalez6462 I personally prefer the high performance pots like the Tunnel Tube because they can get to a boil very fast which is important. Especially getting back to a return boil after dumping in the seafood. The faster the better
