brilliant, a real lesson in don't make it complicated and rock/pop stars do not have guitars with special powers, its all there as Marty has been showing us for sometime. a really good lesson. thanks to you both for bringing it all together. keep on strumming.
Great lesson as always! Lindsay has such a clear, simple way of explaining concepts that can be pretty complicated to get your head around. So happy to see the Marty-Lindsay collab going strong! Calgary musicians represent!
I had figured this out about music a long time ago oh, there's a great scene in vinyl towards the end when one of the guys grab the guitar and plays a bunch of songs in e a B, this video is fantastic, she explains it in a way that is understandable plus she's a fantastic guitarist thanks 🎸
Oh, and this is a great tip for new song writers as well. Mix your chords progression with arpeggios of those chords, inversions of those chords, different instruments, shift an octave, etc. and your making music withing the simple parameters that Lindsay so deftly describes. (If only I could sing! LOL.)
Marty do your or Lindsey have a lesson on that beautiful open chord Blues shuffle she does at the beginning. I think have it down but would love a detailed description.
About a year ago I had a dream where I was listening to some killer Aerosmith sounding song while riding a motorcycle. I woke up soon enough to figure the chords out. They were beautiful and catchy, and I found them all by chance in my dreams. But now watching this, I realize it was just the 1564, a generic progression I've probably heard so times its burned into my brain's dna. Dang.
Love love luv this lesson, about 1-4-5... What maybe didn't get said was all this only requires 2 bar chord shapes... E and A. Play a bar E shape anywhere. Play a bar A same fret. Slide up 2 frets and play Bar A. Bingo... 1 4 5. A zillion songs any ya only actually fret 2 chord shapes :)
Dear Marty, you’re a great guitar UA-cam guy. You’ve taught me so much, For free, which is awesome. Although I don’t mind looking at you, she blows you out of the water! How’s about the bond theme? A full guitar version. Much love
And if you notice, the bridge usually goes to the 2. 1, 6m, 4, 5 and bridge 2. I've been using this, and the Nashville System for about 50 years now playing in bar bands.. I don't know what all those little black dots mean. 8) --gary
Thank you so much Lindsay Ell, a brilliant lesson, just brilliant. I don't yet have enough flexibility in my pinky to do the SRV bit you played at the start. But an outstanding lesson nonetheless. Thanks for sharing. 🤠🎸
She plays the easiest Bm to change to fretting the Em shape bar chord on fret 7. But like she sez, play whatever Bm ya want. If you're struggling with bar/barre chords...try a strat or tele. Night and day easier than any acoustic guitar.
It looks like she’s playing B, A, D, E, which are the 1, 7, 3 and 11 of B minor. If that’s the case, she shouldn’t call it a B minor, if it’s a Bm11. If I have the notes wrong, because it’s difficult to see her fingerings given the angle, then what are the notes? That’s what I’m asking.
yeah it looks like those notes. But maybe if you want to get real accurate with the name perhaps a Bm7/11?? theres no 9th in there for it to strictly be called an 11th.. its a nice option to play tho! Hopefully it wouldnt clash with one gtr [playing that and another a regular ol Bm
I wish I would have had someone teaching me this when I first started playing 50+ years ago, it would have saved years of frustration. I had to learn it all the hard way, but maybe that's why I can pick up songs so quickly by ear now, even complex multi-chord stuff from bands like Dream Theater or Avenged Sevenfold.
This is very cool to know! However, the reason I subscribe to Marty is that he goes slow and tells me where every finger is on every string. I had to open me ole guitar chord app to get the b minor. I know this sounds ridiculous but I like how Marty holds my 41 year old hand through every chord change and goes slow.
to be more precise ;-) While the way she plays it reminds indeed _So far away_, this song is actually using another chord progression! :-) Intro is 5 4 1, chorus is 4 6m 5 1
Marty, my ole buddy Rick Richard told me this one time on stage, he said Tony “there’s a lot of things wrong with country music, but there’s a lot of things right about it to”
I used to play a lot of Southern Rock in my youth. One time I was jamming with this older black jazz pianist in a studio between sessions. When I told him what kind of music I liked to play he said, the only difference between Southern Rock and Country is the number of measures in the guitar solo.
Thanks for another great video, and thank you Lindsay for sharing your knowledge with us. You are definitely one of the greatest artists in country music. 🤠🎸🤘
Why can't I do the pinky thingy @ 3:42? My pinky won't reach the fourth fret on 5th or 6th string from E without my ringer finger moving. My hand ain't big, but I'm pretty sure I have bigger hands than her. My hand size is 9" as measured by NFL combine. Didn't realize my pinkies were so short! :-(
Hey Marty I have been looking everywhere for a lesson for Screaming Trees there aren't many tabs for them I was wondering if you could maybe do some lessons I would greatly appreciate it and thanks for being there Marty your the main mistro
damn marty you looking fine ngl
😂
brilliant, a real lesson in don't make it complicated and rock/pop stars do not have guitars with special powers, its all there as Marty has been showing us for sometime. a really good lesson. thanks to you both for bringing it all together. keep on strumming.
A fine lesson here! Getting to learn every Pop Song with just these chords, it's actually really impressive when you think about it
It is amazing, that with such a small "alphabet and dictionary" (notes and chords), that modern music has as much variety as it does.
I'm always amazed too but I probably shouldn't be - look at what nature does with DNA and its 4 'letters' A, C, T and G
Michael Baker good point, all about the different combinations:)
Love the addition of Lindsay El! Thanks for song writing and guitar playing tutorials.
Honestly Marty you’ve taught me everything I know
The James Blunt pattern at 5:30 also sounded a lot like the intro to, "Just what I needed" by The Cars.
Great lesson as always! Lindsay has such a clear, simple way of explaining concepts that can be pretty complicated to get your head around. So happy to see the Marty-Lindsay collab going strong! Calgary musicians represent!

What I love is the I, IV,V, is from the blues progression and still in use today ☺️
Don't forget the secret "Santana" chord progression that Frank Zappa spoke of in one of his songs, the I, II, III, it's used a lot in heavy metal.
Marty do your or Lindsey have a lesson on that beautiful open chord Blues shuffle she does at the beginning. I think have it down but would love a detailed description.
Thanks to you both, stay safe, great lesson.

Love this little lesson. Love Lindsey ell! Hello from Calgary! So proud of you!
Agree avec 100% ☺☺ salutation de Quebec ☺☺🎸🎸
Love marty.... love Lindsey too
what is the chord shape that Lindsay uses for B minor?
I have the same question. Does anyone know?
Dear Marty, you’re a great guitar UA-cam guy. You’ve taught me so much, For free, which is awesome. Although I don’t mind looking at you, she blows you out of the water! How’s about the bond theme? A full guitar version. Much love
I enjoy those lessons from Lindsay! Please make more!
great lesson thanks Marty and Lindsay be safe through these crazy days
Loved the edition work! MartyMusic always surprises me. Thanks to Lindsay too!
So darn personable - great instructor.

Awesome lesson! Always good to have some chord progressions to jam over!
Can some pls tell me what strings she’s using for the b minor?
This was fantastic!
Thank you so much Lindsay Ell, a brilliant lesson, just brilliant.
I don't yet have enough flexibility in my pinky to do the SRV bit you played at the start.
But an outstanding lesson nonetheless. Thanks for sharing.
🤠🎸
OMFG This had truly been my lightbulb 💡 moment, thank you so so much Marty & Lindsay ❤️
Marty and Lindsay, you guys are great! Thank you!
Great video. I am not a shredder. I am a song kind of guy. you two are AWESOME
The best collaboration
my new guitar effects is a hair piece that hangs into the strings !
For a comical example of how this works, check out Axis of Awesome
Whoo! Getting close to 2M subs! Congrats Marty!
Great lesson and an amazing attitude. Thanks a lot!
What B Minor form is she playing? Is that a Bm11?
She plays the easiest Bm to change to fretting the Em shape bar chord on fret 7. But like she sez, play whatever Bm ya want. If you're struggling with bar/barre chords...try a strat or tele. Night and day easier than any acoustic guitar.

Such a talented young lady!!
Strange, I figured this out a long time ago, but it all makes sense now, with the numbers and all.
I wish I would have had someone teaching me this when I first started playing 50+ years ago, it would have saved years of frustration. I had to learn it all the hard way, but maybe that's why I can pick up songs so quickly by ear now, even complex multi-chord stuff from bands like Dream Theater or Avenged Sevenfold.
you learn this pretty quickly playing christian music with different singers that sing in different keys and you have to transpose on the spot.
So clean it’s almost unplugged
This is very cool to know! However, the reason I subscribe to Marty is that he goes slow and tells me where every finger is on every string. I had to open me ole guitar chord app to get the b minor. I know this sounds ridiculous but I like how Marty holds my 41 year old hand through every chord change and goes slow.
Great lesson. Thanks!
What was that Bm she was playing? It didn't look like a barre chord.
Damn Marty, spring time is full of changes and blonde hair
5:30 So far away by Dire Straits
@Potatocrunch94 I wish man... nothing against James Blunt but I do prefer Mark Knopfler
to be more precise ;-)
While the way she plays it reminds indeed _So far away_, this song is actually using another chord progression! :-)
Intro is 5 4 1, chorus is 4 6m 5 1
4 chords that made a million.
Marty, my ole buddy Rick Richard told me this one time on stage, he said Tony “there’s a lot of things wrong with country music, but there’s a lot of things right about it to”

Do in this case is the number system used, so 1 is major 2, 3, minor and so on?
Very insightful. Thanks @Lindsay Ell!
Hey Marty, loved Lindsay,s every song uses these chords tutorial!
Awsome lesson, thanks Marty
Lindsay El is truly an amazing talent and guitarist.
She reminds me of D from Always sunny in Philadelphia
That alternate B chord is changing my life.
What is this shape?
Heeey, Marty! I'm from Brazil. I love your lessons.
Thanks for another great video, and thank you Lindsay for sharing your knowledge with us. You are definitely one of the greatest artists in country music. 🤠🎸🤘
Great lesson- And easy on the eyes!
Does anyone know what Lindsay is playing when she first appears on the video, I like it
Thanks Lindsay!
Love that Bm position. Thanks Lindsay!
And what does she play? It doesn't look like a Bm...
Really helpful TY

Great lesson Lindsay!
Another one, the mighty 1564 is also "When I Come Around" by Green Day.
Really want to learn Cliffs of Dover and your vids are the only ones I can learn to!
Can you do a tutorial on the song please!
same wish
@Kyle and @Svyat Zakrinichniy, Guitar lesson 365 has already done it and he literally shows u how to play every note
Why does Lindsay remind me of Dee from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Because she reminds you of Dee.
Right when I read this comment she had sang I'm more than a bird 😂
Excellent lesson
Correction: Five for Fighting's song "Superman" uses a I-V-vi-IV (not vi-IV-I-V).
I’d love to see a lesson on some of the interesting chord voicing she seems to do.
Good lesson
I love this idea of having guests on here!! Get Brett Papa doing a lesson on here too!!
To be fair, if Lindsay sung over me playing three of the two chords I can almost play, it would sound great.
This girl should join Axis of Awesome
C, D, and G
Cheers Marty for Lindsay Ell awesome
Marty really got that second glow up
Can anyone tell what she’s playing at the start?
Can u show us n17 by the saw doctors please
