Joe is right with both Marty & Justin. The only downside to UA-cam lessons is the lack of interaction. The challenges as a beginner can be how you position your thumb on the neck, learning to position your elbow and wrist to maximize your flexibility to reach notes, and things like that. If you find yourself struggling with these things, catch a local instructor with no long term commitments or hit me up and we can do a live video session to help you overcome the obstacles we all face starting out on this beautiful instrument.
I am a lefty playing right hand guitar (it just feels comfortable that way) so I have to work harder at rhythm and speed of my picking hand. I found chromatic picking exercises really useful. I just had a revelation with my alternate picking on this by simply doing it with my eyes closed and focusing on my picking hand. Huge difference! I would recommend giving it a try.
What a gentleman, and a very generous one at that. How nice to let someone else, not just someone else, but another guitar teacher, use your channel to try and get more subscribers. It seems it REALLY is about helping as many people as possible learn guitar for Marty. You are the BIG G of teachers Marty. G for generous.
2:01 We love using a metronome too! We upload new metronome tempos every single day if anyone wants to follow along. Thanks for the great lesson Lindsay!
The interesting thing about this first exercise is that Lindsey uses the downstroke exclusively from the 6th string to the 1st, and exclusively uses the upstroke going back from 1st to 6th string. I've seen people do alternate picking from start to finish, but never picking like this. Cool. I will have to try that. ELL YEAH!!!
Hello from Canada. Great lesson Lindsay. I am getting back to playing after not playing for ten years. Your lessons have inspired me to pick it up again. Love your music
Another great video. Thank you Lindsay and Marty. It’s good to see that I am doing something right in the way I practice. I got a late start in my guitar journey but now that I’m retired I get to enjoy my journey everyday. 🤠🎸🤘
I love her explanations in those videos and yet all very simply to understand. I love hearing small but useful tricks from artist I love. I want more! 😍
Great lesson! I've been playing for over 30 years and have a lot of habits. It's good to get a fresh perspective and bust out of some ruts. Thanks. Lindsay!
Practice doesn't make perfect, perfect practice and patience makes perfect. These are the types of lessons that are vital to take to heart if you want to accomplish your playing goals. I can tell you first hand when I took the guitar up as a teenager many moons ago I wanted to go from 0 to 60 in 3 seconds and be playing every solo from Live at The Fillmore East by the Allman Brothers without putting the work in and I stopped playing because I got frustrated and I stunk. I picked my guitar back up 40 years later and have been putting the work in and what a surprise I am not half bad. It's like Daniel in The Karate Kid wax on wax off, you don't get it at first but then the light goes on one day when you apply it. Thanks for the practice tips!
Spot on. In my mother tongue ( Bemba) I am from northern Zambia. There's a saying that: "There is no such a thing as PRACTICE makes perfect BUT that PRACTICE reduces MEDIOCRE" For those that want to be sarcastic with you, will end the saying by saying..." Show me a professional person who's never made a mistake and I will kiss your a$&. We all error at some point in life" They would say.
AMEN! So many of my students want to play evolved songs out of the gate or will ask "How long before I can play songs like this?" It's a blast when you can tell the light bulb has turned on and they get how the focus on technique has moved them faster toward learning any song, not just one.
@@americanrenewal I could have used that guidance the first time around LOL! But I am doing something about it now and having a blast. Good luck to you and be safe out there.
New guitarist and experienced as well need to save this video. It's straight to the point and it's that simple. It works, but you must do the work consistently. Good teacher!
One of my guilty pleasures is watching these tutorials at half the normal speed because they sound drunk when at that speed. 😂 Plus, it helps to pick up all of the finger work. 👍🏾
I am a beginner, I have had my guitar a week and that was some absolutely fantastic advice and very helpful, thanks heaps😊👍 I will use those tips daily!
Lindsay is such a sick player, really enjoying watching her tutorials lately. Stretching your fingers takes time for beginners, but this video has some good exercises to get you going...
Every time she says the name of the strings I felt like her mind would go " eddie aid dynamite good bye eddie"eddie aid dynamite good bye eddie"eddie aid dynamite good bye eddie"eddie aid dynamite good bye eddie"😂😂
Great lesson! Thanks as always to my fellow Calgarian, Lindsay for the excellent advice and to Marty for bringing her on board to give these lessons and this fresh perspective! :)
note to self PRACTICE (20-30 mins) 1-warm up (10 mins) with the metronome -Play every fret on every string up and down the neck -Change the fingering (1324) up and down the neck -Spider web (1E 2E 3D 4G - 1G 2D 3A 4E) up and down the neck -Picking hands : on Minor Pentatonic for ex : 1 note every metronome beat / twice every metronome beat / thrice every metronome beat 2-chords practice transitions between notes learn how to play different versions of the same note 3-new songs
I think even more guest guitarists could really spruce up this channel a bit. As much as I love Marty, hearing from a variety guitarists about techniques is a nice change of pace
Hey I enjoy all of your content and I have been playing for about a month and you have helped me with great improvement. could you please play a reason to fight by disturbed, thank you for all that you do.
Damn, Marty looking gooooddddd
Oh yes
Quarantine changes people

Lindsay has been a fantastic addition to your channel Marty!
I'm a beginner (2months) I'm not taking lessons.
I'm using books & UA-cam, so this is really helpful.. thank u so much.

CG GuitarLessons this is all true, it’s why I’ll be looking locally for a few lessons for some issues I have reaching and changing chords smoothly
you should check out Rocksmith as well. I haven't played it very long yet but for the 12 hours I have, it was my highest progress/hour rate.
Look for a teacher if u can is better
She's a natural teacher. Very relatable.
... And she really pretty
“If practice was math, then jamming would be physics.” 😍😍😍
That was a Beautiful analogy
And I hate them both
You need to go back to english class
Great way to set up practise routines. Most people just learn songs and riffs. Technique helps the creative flow for writing.
‘If practice was math then jamming is physics’. Mind = Blown

im the same, lefty playing righty, but the rhythm and speed is what im good at already..

Have used these exercises for 50+ years, glad to see I'm not alone. Great job Lindsay!!
Instead of thinking of it as practicing and work think of it as playing and having fun and you’ll learn so much more so much faster

Best guitar channel on UA-cam. The passion for music is always evident.
Wow, Marty is so successful on UA-cam he can get 50 views in the minute his video is put up.
Not to take anything away from Marty, but that might also be due to patreon viewers.
From hours upon hours of research i seem to be missing one thing to be a legendary guitar player

Thanks for the advice Lindsay, I’m about to come out with a record so keep an eye out for that!
