- Recording artist and touring musician Ken Verheecke was kind enough to stop by and play a couple of his favorite guitars from us. Ken has purchased both a Taylor 512CE NG and Eastman 522CE from Haggertys Musicworks and loves both guitars. He wanted to do a comparison video to showcase the similarities and differences between both guitars. Although the Taylor is his dream guitar, the Eastman delivers a stunning sound at a third of the cost.
For more information on Eastman or Taylor guitars, please visit our website at: www.haggertysmu...
Eastman are fantastic guitars.., I have an Eastman AC512C.., it blows away any comparable Taylor, as well as most higher end Taylor guitars.., regardless of where they are made, Eastman guitars are handmade, and that makes all the difference..,
I have many high end guitars, Taylor, Martin, Collings, and Gibson. I also now own many EASTMAN models as well because they are making amazing sounding and quality constructed instruments for a very fair price. I think this is the golden age of EASTMAN guitar making right now. Let's hope it continues.
I agree, this is the golden age of Eastman
As a proud owner of an Eastman AC522 and a Taylor 714CE...I must confirm that the Eastman sounds much better than the high end, very expensive Taylor....
I just bought an Eastman AC508ce after looking for a good four months or so for a nice fingers type steel string. Couldn't be happier with it. It has the same mahogany back and sides with rosewood binding, but it also has a slotted headstock which is really cool
scaredypicker Good for you :-)
extremely helpful. I picked up a 122ce (laminate) and was impressed with the feel, sound, fit and finish. Having no knowledge of Eastman, I visited their website. I was drawn to the 522ce, ( I love mahogany over all other tone woods), and figured the all solid would be all the better but had no real examples. Your video has been most helpful. It sounds as good as the Taylor, plus. I discovered a great new guitarist! Your playing is beautiful!
My Eastman is a great sounding guitar! It still takes my breath away and I am a full time working musician... it is a great tool!
My Eastman e20 OM is a joy to play and sounds fantastic.
Yes, I've been playing since I was 14. I'm 51 now. I own 20 guitars at this time. Most worth $2000.00 and up. I know guitars very well. I play and collect.
Just ordered my ac722ce, cannot wait for it to arrive!
I've been watching this and many other videos about Eastman guitars for forever. I finally managed to scrounge together the money to get one of their top end acoustic models. I'm so stoked.
I have an Eastman Ac322CE. Sitka spruce top with Sapele back and sides. The woods are stunning and beautifully finished. My Eastman rings like a bell.
I have always wanted a Gibson J-45 and have played many over the years. neve had the 2500.00 for it though. I walked into a music sotre last week and there was a used Eastman E20SS - It's the Eastman version of the J-45 but with East Indian Rosewood back and sides. All solid wood - nitro finish - amazing neck - this thing is just incredible and I'm a fussy dude. It sounds easily as good as any J-45 I ever played. Great action - comfortable - fast - I traded in a Taylor for it and couldn't be happier. New the E20SS is around 1200.00 with a good hard case. The used one was 850.00. Seek them out and be happy :)
Thanks Ken. What's the arrangement of your capo on both guitars? Thanks. Bill
I certainly respect Mr. Fair's unwavering, uncritical view of U.S.-made guitars, but this particular Eastman is the better sounding instrument. I played several Eastmans at Merle Fest in North Carolina and they were some of the best sounding, most beautifully made guitars I have ever played. U.S.-made is fine, but often way overpriced and not comparable to some Chinese-made guitars one third of the price. Also, note that China has been making instruments much longer than we have in the U.S.
Thanks for the lovely review though you did not mention the strings used on each and from the sound of it it sounds like the taylor has medium or mediumlights and the eastman has lights. Thats the most important thing to mention in a comparison in my opinion. Thanks Ken
Did that eastman come with the Fishman Matrix, and if so, what's your opinion on the electronics? I've read on numerous websites that the Matrix is not a very good pickup, but I would like a more credible opinion. Thanks!
Both sound very nice. I think the Taylor comes through a wee bit stronger but the Eastman still sounds nice. I just purchased a Taylor 512 ce With a Red Cedar body. So it will be a little different than the one in this comparison. I saw Ken play a few years ago at a small coffee house in Illinois.
+jalguitarman Whoa... I wonder what coffeehouse that was. Did we visit at all? Hi btw :-)
Hi, Ken. it was at the Praise coffeehouse in Greenville IL. And yes we did visit afterwards. I was the one who said the style of one of your songs that used an acoustic guitar along with an electronic loop could be classed as "Folktronica" ;-)
The Eastman sounds brighter and clearer in my opinion.
Great playing.
The Taylor has 20 years of professional play in the timber, that has to reflect on the tone.
I believe they are different body shapes. The Taylor looks smaller.
Great comparison thank you. My 2c. The Eastman sounds like it has newer strings. The Taylor sounds dryer but also has more fullness in the mid range that I really like. The Taylor sounds a bit better to me. Is the body also a little smaller on the Taylor?
Sorry--have not found a Taylor that sings to my ear--to me they are the guitars that sound muddy. I have played them all--the Martin has more balance, tonal presence--and the Eastman is right up there with Martin. Taylor is over-rated and over-priced. I just tried every top end Taylor in the store and they all sounded dead compared to the lower end Martin--by that I mean the Martin I played was close to $1000--less than the Taylor's I tried.
muddy? ohhhh now i get it, you're talking about your hearing
Yes, the Eastman sounds way better.
The Eastman sounds better by far.
I have an Archback AJ-815 (Eastman) and I love it....fantastic guitars
I have an Archback AJ-815, too, and I love it! I was fortunate to find it used at a local music store.
taylor sounds a little bit better than Eastman in strum, for fingerpicking , can't tell
ShuYang Lin They both have great tones
I think the Taylor sounds better strummed, but the Eastman blew me (and the Taylor) away in fingerpicking. The Taylor sounds great, but comparing them directly side by side, I think the Eastman has a very ethereal sound to it and when the video switches to the Taylor, something just sounds like it's missing...
The Taylor seems more mid-forward, better projection. Both sound fantastic. I think I prefer the Eastman overall though, and I'm a Taylor player!
Furch and Eastman are replacing a lot of the big name brands for consistent quality, because Martin and Gibson make very inconsistent guitars and it seems Taylor is losing their edge. Plus these brands, being the under dogs, are only getting better and better. As for paying Taylor money go support a small Luthier in your home country and the results will be far more impressive and custom!
Nice comp. Wish you would have done this unplugged though.
Todd... there was nothing plugged in! Recorded with a Royer mic!
Wow...Thanks!
To me the Eastman sounds a little more full, brighter, and slightly more responsive than the Taylor. The difference is slight. They are are so similar, that you can tell just by listening, that they are similar size and tonewoods. I will give the upper hand to the Eastman in this demo. It sounds to me like the Eastman has fresh strings and the Taylor has older, more played in strings. Both guitars sound very nice. If I were to make a recording using one of these two guitars, it would be the Eastman. Great demonstration. Thank you for this video.
They both sound lovely. But how about the neck? Do you find the Eastman neck with the 12" radius easier or harder to use than the Taylor 15" radius?
EASTMAN !!!
The Taylor is a bit stronger in the mids and upper mids. At least in this recording, they are very close. If you don't watch the video and just listen through headphones they are virtually indistinguishable. that says a lot for a guitar that costs a third as much.
For the price there is no comparison Eastman are tremendous value for money Sound and play every bit as good as Taylor or Martin a no brainer really
fantastic playing first of all....... I hate to say this but I would give the edge in sound to the eastman..... who knew?
To woodmo530. I do know what I am talking about. I am fifty years old and have played the guitar since I was fourteen. I own Gibsons, Taylors, Fenders , and a national resophonic. I know what quality is all about and great customer service also. Taylor can't be beat. As far as sound goes, its a preference. Me personally I picked my 414ce Taylor over more expensive guitars at that time as it is a wonderful guitar for finger style or strumming. My 67 Gibson J45 is a great guitar for everything.
@rigorhead01 completely. sound/tone is objective. i'm simply saying, to me, it does not sound that great when he was fingerpicking. strummed was a different story (also note how i said its the best sounding taylor i've ever heard, but still not for me...? ;) )
There is very little difference in the sound! They both sound wonderful. I have an Eastman E15ss as my second guitar (my first is a Lowden) I love my Eastman.
Taylor for me!
the taylor sounds a bit lifeless when he was fingerpicking. best sounding taylor i've ever heard, but still not for me :)
It makes SO much difference when a proffesional player does the comparison
John... "China made trash?" Hardly... my Eastman is a stunning guitar and it sounds amazing. I absolutely love it!
exactly--- trash
which one do you have?
Mark... that piece I am playing is an original piece I wrote many years ago. Albeit simply... the melody was something I enjoyed. Thanks for asking!
I like the sound of the pick up... it ain't bad, but my only problem with them (Fishman Matrix VT system I believe) is the rattles and noises. Not a fan of that! Otherwise I think they sound great!!! BUT I am will note, I am switching to a K&K Pure Mini in my Eastman!
I have to disagree with hawg427 about Martin guitars being better for fingerpicking than Taylors. I really want to like the Martins but they sound muddy to me 4 out 5 I try while the Taylors are the opposite. The brighness and action of the Taylors allow for a playing experience much more accommodating to than Martins. I have not however tried Eastmans so will have to give them a look.
@ThroughFallenEyes If your into fingerpickin just buy a Martin, which IMHO blows Taylor out of the water. In our old church all the guitarists had Taylors which do not sound bad, but when you put a Martin HD-28 next to the Taylor Taylor just loses that tone battle. The Martins are a louder guitar also, that's why it's used in Bluegrass bands. I personally love my Martin HD-28.
Taylor is way way better
You obviously don't know what you are talking about when you refer to Eastman as China made trash. You can like your Taylor, which by the way are much, much less handmade and more of a production line type guitar now, but your attitude shows your ignorance. Both are fine guitars and fine guitar companies.
I dont think either is better than the other one. The Taylor has stronger fundamentals, so the sound comes across very solid, great for finger style. The Eastman has a more scooped mids, so it's more "rosewood" sounding. Not sure if it makes sense. The Eastman is probably a better strummer and the taylor a better fingerstyle. I think the 5 and 6 in GC and GA size for Taylors are their star performers. Also the Eastman is probably not broken in yet.
taylor guitars are great but they are overpriced. and to be honest in this review the taylor sounds very light and the eastman has a bit more bass.but the most important thing is the feel and we cant feel that. both great guitars but based on this review and price i would take the eastman.
In the same price, Eastman is definitely a better choice than Taylor.
Never tried an Eastman guitar in my life... I bought a Taylor that I really like ... but listening to your video...I wonder... from what i hear here on my cheap tv speaker, I prefer the Eastman! Darn...now i'll have this on my mind!!!! Maybe I should go listen to a couple of Martin just to drive me crazy
Eastmans are great guitars for the money. Build quality is superb. The only thing I can say though is that they are easy to fall out of love with.
I take that back.....just get the part-time job for a few months and buy the Taylor or Martin or Guild or Huss & Dalton etc...
Play it for a lifetime and pass on down through the generations.
To my ears the Taylor is a little more musical but as a working/touring guitar it's a no brainer the Eastman gets it by minus 2 or $3000
Dont get me wrong but isnt that 500 series made with a cedar top ?
Have you ever played an Eastman? A store near me sells a bunch of them and I've played tons of models and always been incredibly impressed. Nobody is going to give up playing guitar if they have an Eastman. They're beautiful and, no, they don't sound like Taylors, but they're not supposed to. They sound like Eastmans, and that's pretty great.
Eastman = warm, bass
Taylor = focus, clear, bright
To my ears Taylor is better. good image and high quality.
Ill take the American Taylor over any China made trash. Taylor stands by their work. I have a 414CE that was nine years old and the clear coat started to lift off. I called Taylor and at no charge to me, they refinished the guitar, dressed the frets, new strings and a new pick guard. That is what I call GREAT cutomer service. My Taylor sounds awsome for all styles of music. I am very happy with it and the company that stands by their products.
Which Eastman model do you own and what was your customer service experience with them?
@BillEvans1956 Hi Bill... I am using a Keyser (full capo) and a Shubb Partial Esus capo.
@seattlecard I do too... mine still sounds great, and plays great! A very consistent instrument as I tour the nation... that's a HUGE plus!
@ThroughFallenEyes Indeed... it comes down to personal preference.
Taylor way way better sounding people who think that Eastman is even close is crazy
Thats a lot of crazy people then
Taylor is "better" but it's been played more.
Man, that Eastman might be the one for me in comparison
Let's take into consideration that the Taylor has more time to age, while this Eastman is still a relatively new guitar that has years to break in and blossom. Considering that, it sounds pretty good.
why's there more hiss when the taylor plays? did you bump up the gain?
All I heard was "herp de durp, mall ninja, corporate slave, herp de durp".
@hawg427 I think it comes down to personal preference ;-)
One more point... the name of the piece is "Dawn's Embrace."
@powermrkkk Very true... hence the reason why I have one :-)
Thanks Ken. Love your dynamic playing style. Lots of touch sensitive stuff rather than just note for note off of a piece of paper :).
Very helpful! Thank you! Beautiful guitars!
I have no comment and support you whole-heartedly... blessings to you!
As far as I can see, the top of the Taylor is pretty warped.....!
Nice Verk!
Wow, you really know how to wave a flag, but can you play?
Eastman sells its guitars at a very reasonable prices!!
Hardly... it's a fuller sounding guitar
@61jojo61 Have you tried an Eastman?
Just so you know... I purchased my Eastman...
What song does he play during the comparison?!?!
Excellent reply... well thought out...
Yes... it's seen a LOT of road miles ;-)
@seattlecard Agreed... wonderful guitars!
Give me a free guitar and I'll say anything too!
@ThroughFallenEyes Lifeless!? Are you serious?
@seattlecard I LOVE mine too :-)
Agreed... wonderful sounding guitars!
@powermrkkk AGREED!!!
Hand picking - Taylor
Strumming - Eastman
100 % d'accord :)
the Taylor's sound is warmer and has a stronger base for sure. BUT the Eastman also sounds great!!
Tyler Yu Both are great guitars!!!
For the price, which one was better?
The eastman or the taylor 314ce?
Good call...
Thank you Cal!!!
Eastman dreadnought
The comparison is not very fair, get yourself a Taylor 312, is half the price of the 512 and still is way better than the Eastman, a wonderful guitar, affordable reliable and made in USA. If you were to buy a first guitar for a teenage boy who, probably will give up after some week you should buy the Eastman but as musician there's no option here, Guitars are the musicians tools and a good job requires good tools
Eastman made in china or usa ?
bronx.........idiot
China
