- We go fishing in deep water for yellowtail in the late fall/early winter. On my Hobie Pro Angler 14 kayak, I use dropper loops and heavy yoyo irons to target these cold water yellowtail.

Hahaha ya I guess so, but seems like if you wear waders in norcal I'll just get a bunch of hecklers and haters telling me I will die. But when it heats up to the mid 70s after the morning being able to strip down to trunks is key. Cheers bro!

Congrats on the yellowtail, Chris. I agree, the crushed mac with no cuts or section scrapped, is a Yellowtail hit. Sometimes it just a hit and other times a very short run, but no hook up. It's like it wasn't that hungry but just like Calico bass an instinct strike. You had some great marks on the FF. It at least makes it more rewarding when you could see them on the FF. 100% the first time you see them on the sonar and then catch the target species, it gives you a 500x confidence boost. It so helpful have the ability to know when the right kind is under the boat to keep you focused and in the right zone. Cheers Mark!

Chris never had a kayak and want to start, would a tamarack 10’ be a good kayak to start with for the ocean
I would say a general rule is 12' or bigger for these kinds of fisheries. But if you pack light, are a strong paddler, and pick clam days you could get away with a 10' kayak.

Agree'd on the buying new vs used. Warranty is key. My drive broke on my first trip out do to some defect. I took it to Southwind and they swapped it out with a brand new one on the spot. Although, I have since moved out of the Hobie "Sphere", I will attest that they offer fantastic customer service through their reps.
P.S. A cold weather dressing video would be cool. We have pretty unique weather here so wearing a wetsuit or full dry suit may be comfortable early in the morning and turn into a sauna within a few hours.
Ya the guys up north use the farmer johns or dry suits, but that's just way to yeasty for down here haha.

Yup thats a good zone out there, and much less fishing pressure. You can access that area in kayak too if you know where to launch.

First time beach launching my PA14... was awesome but man La Jolla current and wind can really push you ... I peddled out past that reef and flag pole that everyone kept telling me about as a reference ... I kept looking back at it and I was right on it everyone time .... but I have t seen my finder light up with so much fish before. I’m usually up in Dana and launch out of pure water sports for salt creek . I’ll be back to La jolla regularly

Another well-done video. When you say the current is ripping, just curious what is considered ripping off La jolla?
Probably not as strong as other places in the ocean. On a day with no wind, if you are moving at 1 mph in a kayak I would consider that to be ripping here. Thanks for commenting, cheers!

would love to see a video on bait catching. I struggle to find the juicy greenbacks you mention. I can only seems to find jacks. How do those fare for as yt bait?
Hi Jimmy thanks for watching. Ya I might do that video that is a good idea. The spanish or jack mackerel will totally get bit by the yt and halibut. Less so the white seabass. You can be pretty confident if you have a nice tank of spanish. Typically, the spanish will relate close to the kelp while the GB can be found in deeper open waters near the canyon drop offs. But usually even if you are in the kelp on a thick wad of spanish, you'll be able to pick a few GB out of the school if you just keep picking through them. Cheers Bro.

Chris, Love your videos. I recently purchased a PA12 from Fastlane. The whole team over there is awesome, from Ron to his wife and daughter. They embody the Hobie spirit. I drive from the OC to visit their shop and make purchases there to help support them. Hobie Distributors are so important to the service aspect of these find boats. Was this video shot the weekend of 11/13-15? I was staying at the La Jolla Hotel that weekend. Dare say without my PA12 as it was a weekend away with the non-fishing wife. Weather was beautiful and I watched each morning people launch. The launch seems a lot about timing. I watched for about 1 hour and there were times about every 5 minutes when the surf went flat and the kick/paddlle out would be easy and other times during the 5 minutes where there were 2-3' sets rolling in. I just told myself I have to be patient when I do this. I will be excited, but I must be patient. Hopefully one weekend in December I will get down. Again thanks for the videos and sharing all your experience. It makes us better fishermen and people. All the best.
Thanks Andrew, that's a very nice compliment. Ya if you surf its very helpful to know how to time the sets. The launch gets gnarly on short interval west and northwest swell. On the longer period stuff the canyon will bend the sets up to scripps, and be easier to sneak out between sets. I was out on Sunday ya. This video was from the week before though. No set time really. It not like the days 10 years ago when the squid would bed up for months at a time. Usually we will get about a week of squid fishing before it dries up or gets too much pressure from anglers. I've got it all year round, just depends on the socal bight conditions. Cheers.
I can see the condo building in the background, but the camera lens can make it look further than it is - you are at about 170' but how far from the condo? Yeah, what about your winter gear for cold mornings?

Hi Scott. Ya I peddle out through the surf. Just have to be careful and use the right pedal stroke in shallow water ie pedals apart. Cheers.
Nice video man! So when you use 40# mono you don’t need to Tie a small top shot of Fluoro ?
I mean you could, maybe you might get a few more bites. But its just one more knot to fail, and one more knot to tie when you have to re-rig. The way I do it I can re-rig my RDL in like 3 minutes. And I seem to get plenty of bites on mono. Flouro is much less forgiving and you need to get you knots just right or they will abrade themselves and break off easily. Totally different story fishing offshore for those line-shy tuna and paddy fish. In this inshore environment mono seems to get bit just fine.

Hi Luke, thanks for watching! I don't really fish with people I don't know. When I have time to get on the water, I focus on fishing hard and searching out the conditions. Making videos is a secondary priority, and teaching on the water would really take away from that. Those that have seen me on the water know that I can move around a lot at times, and I can be tough to track down. That being said, I will always say hi to subscribers at the launch or on the water, and pass on a few tips on the current conditions or maybe pass on some greenbacks or something. Maybe one day I will get my guiding license and start taking people out. That being said fishing is fun for me, and I don't really want to make it a job. For now these videos are the best you're going to get, and I personally think this is the best information you can get on UA-cam right now. Cheers bro!
Chris watching you I want to try fishing for yellowtail. Can you let me know if I have a $1,000 budget for a rod and reel combo which 2 combos should I go with for flylining and jigging? Would you recommend spinning reels at all or just conventional? Thanks
That's a big budget for 2 kayak combos, you could get 3 of the setups I use for 1k. I'm assuming you will use these on kayak. The saltists I use are like $180 or so, spool that up with 65# braid and that's like another 30-40 bucks or so. The UglyStiks are like 60-70$. I like my Phenix Axis, its a nice rod, but expensive. Usually I advise people not to buy nice gear for the kayaks, especially of they are just starting out. If I was going to spend 1k on gear I'd probably get 2 saltists (torium is comparable if you like shimano) and an Avet single speed. No need for 2-speed reels for the fishing I do. Then I'd get get 2 cheap rods and one nice jigstick. I don't use spinning reels, but they work fine for out there. 7' M or MH Uglystik Tigers, and a Seeker Ulua, 9'3. Not a very specific answer, I don't really buy gear like that. There's probably lots of dudes out there with waaaay nicer gear than me, who could better tell you how to spend your money. Expensive gear doesn't mean they catch a lot of fish. There's other things you could buy that would help you catch more fish, first and foremost a nice fish finder unit.
@@chrisblevinsfishing dang Chris I just ordered a shimano terez 7’ mh with an Avet hxj 3 speed raptor reel because my local tackle shop has a 15-20% off no sales tax blk Friday sale. I also bought a shimano trevala S mh jigging rod with an Avet SX raptor reel.
After buying all that I saw your post and what you said made sense, kayak fishing is always riskier and high end equipment can get lost. Just curious the beach in La Jolla can I launch my small inflatable boat if it can be carried from the beach to the surf? Or is it strictly kayak only?

@@tamalpias wish I had a boat that was able to chase bluefin. The big bluefin are still around. But it's really hit or miss if they bite.

Def get a new kayak don’t waste time with used the warrantee is the best. Even if it’s out of warrantee they give you a killer deal on kayaks if you get it thru them they deal directly with hobie.

Where do you make bait at La Jolla?
It can move all over from week to week. But up by scripps pier is usually pretty productive, but don't be afraid to look out deep outside the pier.

Any reason you used a 12oz weight for the dropper loop? I've never gone that heavy. Just curious.
The are a few reasons. First off, it gets down faster. Often I'm waiting to drop it until I see the marks swim under my boat on the sonar. Heavier the weight the faster it sinks. The fish can be swimming fast, so if they are 120' down they can be long gone by the time you get your bait down to them. Another time I'll use that heavy weight is if the current is really strong, or the wind is blowing hard. This will help you keep the weight underneath you and on the sonar screen. A third reason is if I want to bounce it on the bottom while slow trolling. Thanks for watching Chris!

I fish 65# braid with 30-50# mono top shot usually, but sometimes I will go straight spectra to short mono or flouro leader if they are in the kelp. Cheers!

Dude I was frothing cant believe I didn't get bit on that. I will pretty much always use a reverse dropper loop for greenbacks, or a 3-way rig. I will use regular DL for live squid or for super small finbait like sardines or tiny spanish. In my experience, a greenback on a regular DL will get twisted up really quick. The RDL with the long leader will give the GB much more room to swim and spaz out without twisting. Cheers!
