@@issa572It's been _months_ since I read the book but I'll try to explain what happened from memory: In The Ballads of Songbirds and Snakes, Coriolanus (President Snow) and Lucy Gray were in district 12 when they witnessed a man being publicly hanged. Just as the song says, the man "called out for his love to flee" right before he was hanged. Towards the end of the book Lucy Gray and Coriolanus planned to meet up at the hanging tree and then escape from district 12. Lucy Gray and the people she lived with were really into music, and Lucy Gray was an excellent singer. *She* was actually the one who wrote "The Hanging Tree" about the man who she saw get hanged, and Coriolanus was there with her as she wrote the lyrics. I don't want to spoil the ending, but something significant happened between Coriolanus and Lucy Gray and they didn't stay together (he hated her by the end of the book). The irony is that Coriolanus was there when Lucy Gray wrote the song, and she ended up going against him, while the song ended up being passed down many years to Katniss, who Snow is _also_ against, and she sang the same song after all that time.
@@BlakeH..888_ "the dead man called out for his love to flee" was because of the fact the he yelled it before he died and the the jabber and mocking Jay's repeating the words/tune but good overall description
And as the spirits around her listen to her sing their song, they finally rejoice at last. They can at last be heard. Their story has been told once more. The siren reincarnate has helped some pass on yet again.
Recently reread them myself, actually, I have the original 3 and plan on buying a ballad of songbirds and snakes soon. It's so chilling because there are so many ways to interpret it too and some of them are like **shudders**
have yall read the ballad of songbirds and snakes? it’s a prequel to the hunger games and even explains the origin of this song. it’s an incredible book.
To all 3 of you who said to read it I WANT TO SOOO BAD i even have a indigo gift card but i haven't had a chance to go get it but trust me i will read it as soon as i can
Just imagine the scene of Katniss sleeping and dreaming as she walks down a long dark corridor that ends in light. This song is playing, and around Katniss, the corpses of her dead friends, comrades and relatives gradually begin to appear, and at the end of the corridor there is a throne on which the dead Katniss herself sits.
Here's the song's full lyrics: are you, are you, coming to the tree where they strung up a man, they say who'd murdered three Strange things did happen here no stranger would it be if we met, at midnight, in the hanging tree are you, are you, coming to the tree where a dead man called out, for his love to flee Strange things did happen here no stranger would it be if we met, at midnight, in the hanging tree are you, are you, coming to the tree where I told you to run, so we would both be free Strange things did happen here no stranger would it be if we met, at midnight, in the hanging tree are you, are you, coming to the tree wear a necklace of rope, side by side with me Strange things did happen here no stranger would it be if we met, at midnight, in the hanging tree Did you, did you go running to the tree Where they strung up a rebel, who went and killed three a strange thing did happen here a stranger it would be if we ran, at dawn, from the hanging tree Did you, did you go running to the tree Where a freed man yelled out, for his foe to leave a strange thing did happen here a stranger it would be if we ran, at dawn, from the hanging tree Did you, did you go running to the tree Where you told me to hide, so we would both be freed a strange thing did happen here a stranger it would be if we ran, at dawn, from the hanging tree Did you, did you go running to the tree Wear a bracelet of diamonds, far away from me a strange thing did happen here a stranger it would be if we ran, at dawn, from the hanging tree
@Samantha Bertrand And it also served as a signal for rebels to meet up there to try and escape district 12 and go off and live in one of the abandoned cities or towns way out past the border...
I love this song so much more now that I know the real origin of it from the Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. You did an amazing job singing this and I admire you for having the confidence to sing in public like that because I know I never could.
It’s a lot better knowing the true origins of this song. Using it in hunger games downplays the evil of slavery that the song is really about. Your voice really brings it alive and the injustice of it all
If you read the new hunger games prequel the lyrics make so much more sense in the context of the series. They are about not only the evils of slavery but the severe punishment of the rebellion against it. I highly recommend the new book 😂😂😂
Wrong. It has nothing to do with slavery. The Hanging Tree" is a song by American composer James Newton Howard featuring vocals from American actress Jennifer Lawrence. It was written by Suzanne Collins and composed by Howard, Jeremiah Fraites and Wesley Schultz from the band the Lumineers. The song was released by Republic Records on 9 December 2014, as the second single from the soundtrack for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1 . In other words the writer of Hunger Games wrote the song as in made it up. It had nothing to do with slavery. It is a modern song that is supposed to sound like an Appalachian folk song. If you had read the books and then the prequel you'd realize the song is about President Snow and his story
@@BizarreOnesStudio you should really learn your history. The hanging tree is based on a slave that was accused of murdering three ppl. He was also in love with another slave and was not allowed to marry her. They met in secret under the tree and he found a scarf that actually belonged to the murder victims. Not knowing this, he gave gave it to his love and she was caught with it. They were supposed to meet at the tree again, and the slave owners strung her up without out questioning her. She kept hoping that he would not appear as she died. That night, he cut her down and went into the river and drowned himself. There have been movies and books written of this horrible case in history. The song originated long before hunger games was invented.

Sooooo true!
Sirens technically aren’t water dwelling creatures! In Greek mythology, they are women with the bodies of birds! I don’t know when sirens and mermaids got crossed over and became similar creatures, but I think I read somewhere that due to a translation error, people outside the Greek empire began to depict sirens as fish instead of birds
Originally in Greek mythology they had wings and human legs but they had some wierd singing battle with olympus's best singers or something like that but the best singers won and the plucked all of the sirens feathers and made them into crowns and the sirens were forced to live in the water and eventually grew tails and lured sailors to their deaths occasionally sparing one.

Don't mention it. I know I'm a HG nerd xD
anyone who's seen the movies knows that
@@anastasial2365 Yeah, I'm not exactly sure why they changed it from the books. I think it would have been perfectly fine without the change
@@sabrina-kk1mf That makes so much sense. I remember from the books that it's rope, but I hear a lot of people sing hope.
Same I had A obsession with by when I was younger
@@sabrina-kk1mf singing 'necklace of ROPE' would be too much. I dread that part even after years of reading the books.. I dread it even now.
And it would be a lot to handle for the kids watching the movie. They had to make it child friendly, if Hunger Games can EVER BE child friendly.
Lyrics :
Are you, are you coming to the tree?
Where they strung up a man they say who murdered three..
Strange things did happen here no stranger would it be, if we met at midnight in the hanging tree.
Are you, are you coming to the tree?
Where a dead man call out for his love to flee..
Strange things did happen here no stranger would it be if we met at midnight in the hanging tree.
Are you, are you coming to the tree?

Are you, are you coming to the tree?
Wear a necklace of hope side by side with me.

I love how after reading A Ballad of Songbirds and snakes, now I know the meaning and origin of this song. Very very cool!
Yeah I know!
What is it? I didn’t read the book yet
@@issa572It's been _months_ since I read the book but I'll try to explain what happened from memory:
In The Ballads of Songbirds and Snakes, Coriolanus (President Snow) and Lucy Gray were in district 12 when they witnessed a man being publicly hanged.

Imagine you are the lucky guy who had the pleasure to listen to her by chance in a public stairwell
Walking alone in this staircase and hearing these lyrics is a whole different scary beautiful experience.

Love it how the step up changed the acoustics ever so slightly, brilliant.
It’s a lot better knowing the true origins of this song. Using it in hunger games downplays the evil of slavery that the song is really about. Your voice really brings it alive and the injustice of it all
i heard hanging tree and free and immediately wondered if this was about slavery. sometimes things just give off them vibes
