  • Things that mean the same should look the same (and vice versa: things that do not mean the same, should not look the same).
This is one of the basic principles of IBCS - International Business Communication Standards - which are practical rules for designing understandable reports and presentations.
We're honored to introduce you to a special guest of our actionable reporting summit, the guru of management reporting, the legendary Dr. Rolf Hichert!

Great video! Regarding data density I have an interim solution when it comes to font sizes. On Power BI you can increase the canvas size, that way you can have more space to show trends. Power bi adjusts the canvas size to fit the screen, you will be looking at a downsized report with higher data density.

I agree with the data density point. Complexity and simplicity often go hand in hand.
You have a lot of detailed information, but you need to explain it in an efficient way.
However, this removes the "audience" from the equation. I worked with many stakeholders and they all appreciate a nice looking report. The "nice" part is really hard to nail, but you can absolutely make some fantastic stuff with pie chart and gauges. It just takes a lot of time to master this skill.

This seems to be very tendentious and very old-school point of view. Now there are amazing pie/donut/gauge visuals in the PBI, that can show information way more cleaner than shown in the examples here and what's even more important - they act as an interactive, drilldown able filters / slicers for the whole report. Long gone are the days where visuals should be the final visualization of the data - now they are interactive tools and are just a beginning of the data exploration...

Sorry for the late response. You are absolutely right about interactivity. The point is that you can have more data density, insights and context in a bar chart than a pie or a gauge all the while keeping the same or better options for interactivity.
