What I appreciated most about Nicky was that he wasnt an elitist or thought himself better than anyone else. He greeted everyone with a smile and treated anyone who came into the shop the same, whether you were a famous dj, producer or punter. Respect.

Seen Nicky play at an oldskool set he played in Coventry in the 2000's, he played one of my favourite tunes and at the break I shouted "Nicky I love you" and he looked at me and gave me a thumbs up and a killer smile. Legend.

True ambassador of the scene. Nicky was hard DJ to play after because his selection was always the second to none. Black Market Records was a big part of my youth growing up I wanna take time to thank Nicky, Ash-a-Tack, Ray, Crazy Legs, Profile, Sarah and all the crew that used to work there. I miss that era and get sad how the record shops slowly started to disappear from our community. BM Records was a community hub!! Glad to see Nicky championing the new sound!!

    • @AlexanderBuck1973
      @AlexanderBuck1973 2 роки тому

@@roostaraver Vinyl has had a resurgence over the last few years. I don't think it's the lack of vinyl that's killing the scene. I cant deny that record shops were a massive part of the scene in the early years, but its not sustainable with the streaming services. People don't buy music in the same way anymore. People don't shop for anything in the same way.
Bandcamp is changing the landscape thankfully but it costs a lot of money to press records. Back in the day you could test press a few thousand records and pretty much guarantee getting your money back so you could press some more. It was never about making money really, but you mostly didn't lose money in the hey day of vinyl in the 90s. The sheer quantity of record shops to distribute your music through was incredible. These days with business rates and competition through online shops it's impossible to have that number of record shops open. It's a combination of things that lead to where we are at in the scene. Not just vinly sales or record shops.

Listening to these interviews has been bitter sweet. I just wanna take this space to say what so many have failed to do and thats say a massive THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU to the most important people in the scene. The people that dedicated their time and their hard earned over the years to attending and supporting the events. The people with the energy and vibe that made being in events, on the dance floor and raves such an 'INCREDIBLE' experience. You people who always lived by the code of Love, Respect & Unity and always exuded that, for me personally that was what always bought me home (tho i havent been home for a long while now) Its those experiences, those meetings with people whom i shared encounters with inside and outside the raves that made me laugh and feel loved, that represented what it means to be 'ONE FAMILY'. It has been the most outstanding experience of my life to have been part of that and been accepted into that, its that very very special experience that has formed much of who i am as a person and remains much of what i live by and for. So to all you Original Nuttahs out there that kept the faith, where ever you are, much love and respect from me .K.❤

Black Market was centrally the most important record shop in London if not the England for Jungle and DNB. Don't get me wrong there were other great outlets but I am sorry nobody got the selection and variety of tunes like them. Also the way they treated customers. Nicky would give me exclusive tracks when most records shops would sell me those kinda tunes because I was kid and nobody in the music world but he showed us respect and love. The few times I played out alongside him he was a right bubble always happy and smiling like he is here. Nothing but love for what he's done and continues to do. Another inspirational figurehead.

43:20 this culture was one of the mainstay memories of my youth.
I was buying all my hardcore records from mainly two shops, Music Power on Green Lanes, and Blackmarket.
Absolutely spent my days there, digging the crates for what I'd heard on radio and wanted, and then just hanging out listening to the owners/DJ playing the new stuff just coming in that day and everyone in the shop would be reaching their arms out saying they want a copy of that 😄
In Blackmarket I used to walk past the House music section, grab my set of flyers out back, then downstairs to listen and buy the new Jungle

Just top notch quality entertainment. I've had different fave dj's at points but if you take the whole period of say94 to present day Nicky Has to be my favourite. His ability to play modern upfront, classic jungle and all in between sets makes him for me the best all rounder DJ in the scene. If I could book a personal set for my own party id get him and Fearless down , or him and Flinty and Demon and its job done. Hope we have many more years to come from Blackmarket. Thanks again to Ron -

Respect to DJ Ron and all the legends. Early to mid 90s Jungle changed a brothers life. RIP to the Original Kool FM 94.5.

Great podcast as always. Have you ever thought about making a documentary series on the scene? So much musical and cultural influences to cover one documentary would not be enough. Need a rave scene nextflix series. I think you would be the one to do it right.

Blackmarket on a Saturday was staple. Had to be done.
    Loved this one Ron.
I know that he wasn’t, strictly speaking, predominantly Jungle scene but Maurice (MC MC) would be a great guest. Was definitely part of the beginnings…all his bookings seemed to go up North while the Jungle movement was gaining weight. Know he’s stateside these days but…

when Ron mentions about how Nicky used to sell us tunes that would be shit when we got em home - I used to go there 5 days a week and I remember to this day I walked in and who ever it was on the decks was scratching HEAR THE DRUMMER GET WICKED - CHAD JACKSON - I had to have that tune just because of that scratch - to this day its one that sticks in my mind every time I hear it :)

Love this interview, what a nice chap, even though I bought a few dodgy tunes in Blackmarket thinking they were something else in the shop 😁 Sorry to hear about your mum, I lost my mum the same way, and not a day goes by where I don't miss her dearly x

Another top interview Ron. Loved the bit about how he could flog a tune and make you think it was the nuts. To then go home and it be a load of turd! Would love to see you have Moose on or Shy Fx in the future. Big up
