I’m a gay dude (and yes I use gay and same-sex attraction interchangeably). I’ve been open to celibate partnership (or not but still close to the Church and my family), but I absolutely do not identify with Pride flag and current goings on in LGBTQIAWXYZ land. Nothing screams “I’m different” or even “I’m better than you” than a Pride flag. I don’t want gay Pride in the Church. I want the Church to be “safe” for me but also to be “set apart” from the world.
I miss when Deseret Book platformed gay/SSA individuals who had an alternate approach to this topic. I’m really thankful for my journey and believe there is already room for me and the love I have to give and receive in this Church. LGBT Pride, however, does not represent my place in God’s kingdom.

PS I’ve long thought that if the Church (or Deseret Book) adopted the rainbow, then I could assume that they’ve completely over looked the other options available to us as gay Latter-day Saints (besides or in addition to marriage in a heterosexual union): the merits of friendship, brotherhood, healthy and brotherly physical affection, celibate partnership…things that I believe lie within the bounds the Lord has set.

My brother came out as gay a few years ago, but wanted to remain a faithful latter day saint. He lived in San Fransisco and his bishop was meeting with him and supporting him in going ahead with a gay relationship. My brother told me that if he lived anywhere else he "would have been excommunicated by now." What happened next? After having a couple short gay relationships he started drifting from the church. He started drugs and drinking. After he misunderstood elder Holland's BYU talk to professors, like everyone else did, he abandoned everything to do with the church. He went from someone with a very strong testimony to hating the church in less than 3 years. All because he, with the support of his bishop, thought it would be OK to have a gay relationship. That it wouldn't take him further from the Savior. And I've lost the little brother I knew, and the spiritual bond that we had.😭

My most favorite line from THE CHOSEN is when Mary Magdalene says, "I follow Jesus; not the other way around." This is a growing problem among some members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints who think that charity and kindness means tolerance, acceptance, and celebration (pride flags) of sin. It's heartbreaking to watch. 😭 I personally will have a very difficult time purchasing my sacred ordinance clothing from the distribution center WITHIN Deseret Book. I'm really struggling with this.

A few years ago my Relief Society sent out an email and had another individual in the ward selling pride flags and with the purchase the person would bring out the flag and at the end of pride month they would come and pick it up. I talked with my neighbor who was the ward clerk in the Bishopric and told him that I did not think this was appropriate under the banner of the Relief Society. He told me he’d take it to the Bishop. The following Sunday was Fast Sunday. I along with others were rebuked by our Bishop. He said and I quote “there are more important things going on in our ward than worrying about what kind of a flag our neighbor is flying”. I was outraged. I live in a very liberal close to the U ward. I don’t hate, BUT I do not promote what I believe to be a not aligned with the gospel action. I did not gossip about this over my to the Bishopric, that’s it! As you can tell I’m still HOT over how I was called out from the pulpit.

I'm not LDS, but all faith communities need to distinguish between caring for individuals in their genuine life struggles and signing off on identitarian movements that are political in nature and that will gladly steamroll over a religion in the name of their movement's struggle for more power. Identitarian movements don't care about the sanctity of the individual or about the primacy of religion, but only about accumulating more power for their group.

At the main entrance to our building, they place a pride flag during the month of June, but no American flag. I have brought this up several times with management that, hey,if you are going to fly the Pride flag, then really you should be flying the American flag as well,as I feel that would be showing balance towards both. I have been nice as possible in talking about it,but going into the fourth year my work will be celebrating that month come June, still no American flag has been placed at the entrance to the building,so I feel as if I am talking to a brick wall when it comes to things like this,as if management is not listening to me(yet they claim that they value everyone's input, which at times I have not seen unfortunately). Is anyone else experiencing this, and if so,how did you handle the situation? I totally support being loving and understanding to those of the LGBTQ lifestyle, but like Greg says, some of what Deseret Book is doing lately is not right. I don't think people should have to pay 15.00 to watch an hour to hour and a half long video,on this subject,or any other subject for that matter.

What I can’t understand from the LGBTQ view is why they feel their temptation is so difficult beyond what anyone else has experienced that they feel they have license to sin? There seems to be this assumption that “no one understands what it’s like to experience same-sex attraction, no one knows how hard this is, no one gets why I need to date the same-sex to be okay with my self-image”. Last I checked, even straight married members are tempted towards pornography, lust, infidelity, covetousness, & self-love/pride/indulgence and all manner of mortal weakness. But what you don’t see is all the straight church members out advocating for license to give in to their own difficult habits & temptations. What exactly is different with straight temptation that people can resist it and live righteously anyway but LGBTQ seem to claim it is impossible to refrain from their type of temptation? Doesn’t seem that there’s a way one could measure precisely just how much more difficult one temptation is from another. Last I checked, Church doctrine is that no one can be tempted above that which they are able to bear. As long as you have the mental capacity to exercise your agency & you choose to exercise faith in Christ, you can resist any temptation. There’s no such thing as “it’s too hard for me, because my temptation is special”.
I’m tired of the implied accusation that straight members who live more or less righteously somehow just don’t understand temptation. We understand completely, in my opinion. It’s the fact that LGBTQ seems to have claimed some imaginary pass from criticism of their political agenda that we don’t understand. Or that their agenda is more important to them than ACTUAL efforts to show Christlike love by inviting them to forsake the agenda & follow Christ. The agenda is the great spacious building, the love of the World, the whore of the earth, the exclusive club of the wicked where no real meaningful love or help exists. You’ll have to forgive us for mocking it and being bewildered & saddened when our LGBTQ loved ones choose to waste their time & energy there.
You’re exactly right: allyship & the flag is all about supporting the agenda. It is NOT synonymous with compassion or Christlike love towards a struggling individual.

    • @ldsmusician
      @ldsmusician Рік тому

I agree that persons experiencing SSA ought to exercise restraint like persons tempted with breaking chastity laws in heterosexual contexts.
I do feel like there are some reasoms why persons experiencing SSA find it harder:
      1) the LGBTQ+ movement is predatory and abusive and manipulates people experiencing SSA into believing that they are entitled to non-heteronormative sexual/romantic relationships, and conflating discouragement of homosexual acts with hate. There is not the same scale of advocacy or community building for unchaste heterosexuality, and practitioners of pre- or extra- marital sex are not inundated with messaging that every person and institution who supports the law of chastity is hatefully denying their identity. People experiencing SSA are frequently gaslighted into believing their identity is LGBTQ+ vs divine.
      2) Persons experiencing SSA often have to wrestle with the reality that in embodying an SSA identity, their lifestyle will be limited to exclude some of the most joyful and purposeful experiences of life: family life. An adulterer might recognize they are risking their family but convince themselves they are fine as long as they are not caught. A self-professed gay person who lives a gay lifestyle is acting on the premise that they cannot be happy in a heterosexual marriage, and therefore on some level must force themself to accept that homosexuality is the closest they will ever be able to get to the blessings of family. For somebody with SSA, giving up a gay lifestyle might mean accepting a life not only celibate but without romantic companionship. For somebody who is interested in or engaging in adultery, they don't have to come to terms with a permanent loss of family possibilities in order to act out their sexual preferences, nor in order to resume a chaste life. For as denigrated as the family is, a part of each of us still recognizes the value of family, including many people who have bought into LGBTQ+ politics or practices in some way.

I'll be blunt. I see the pride flag as the flag of a cultural/religious occupier. The "queer" religion is quickly becoming the U.S. state religion, and it avoids pesky separation of church and state laws by claiming not to be a religion. But it is one, and it's not mine. My religion is incompatible with its tenants. I automatically don't trust people who claim to share a religion with me and who simultaneously display the symbols of another religion altogether. There's a huge difference between loving my fellow man and participating in the rituals of a religion I don't believe in. Between living in the world and accepting the philosophical beliefs of the world. It makes me sick to see Deseret Book creating content that tries to syncretize two religions while claiming only to be part of one.

Elder Boyd K Packer: ‘In recent years I have felt, and I think I am not alone, that we are losing the ability to correct the course of the church. You cannot appreciate how deeply I feel about the importance of this present opportunity unless you know the regard, the reverence, I have for the Book of Mormon and how seriously I have taken the warnings of the prophets, particularly Alma and Helaman.
Both Alma and Helaman told the church in their day. They warned about fast growth, the desire to be accepted by the world, to be popular, and particularly they warned about prosperity. Each time those conditions existed in combination, the church has drifted off course. All of those conditions are present in the church today.
Helaman repeatedly warned, I think four times he used these words, that the fatal drift of the church could occur in the space of not many years. In one instance it took only six years. (Helaman 6:32; 7:6; 11:26).” Boyd K. Packer - Let Them Govern Themselves, Reg. Rep. Seminar, March 30, 1990

I choose not to fly the flag for the exact reasons Greg shared. I promise, I possess as much compassion and I’m every bit as safe as those who fly the flag. To be honest, some of the members who fly it, I have found to gossipy, petty, and critical towards other ward members just because they aren’t serving in their callings as the pride waving member thinks they should be. And why should this surprise anyone. This weekend I listened to the presentation by Elder and Sister Holland to the Single Adults. After Sis. Holland spoke, I paused the presentation and said to my family that she left the most important teaching out about Hope. Moroni clearly taught that if we have no hope, we must be in despair, and despair cometh because of iniquity. We are running from teaching the principle of obedience. Thankfully, Elder Holland did touch on transgression and sin, though he stated that he did so reluctantly. Then I was studying the talk by Elder Christofferson about what he called the doctrine of belonging. That terminology makes me uncomfortable because it, like so many words such as inclusion, kindness, tolerance, and love are used to deceive and distort the virtue of truth. Elder Christofferson quoted from The manual Teachings of the Presidents of the Church: Joseph Smith when he said:“we are the favored people that God has made choice of to bring about the Latter-day glory.” Something just didn’t seem right with me about this quote and the context in which it was given. So I went to the manual and read what Joseph Smith fully said. How come he left this part out?
We build up the cause of Zion by becoming a people who are pure in heart and by working diligently with one heart and mind.
“The building up of Zion is a cause that has interested the people of God in every age; it is a theme upon which prophets, priests and kings have dwelt with peculiar delight; they have looked forward with joyful anticipation to the day in which we live; and fired with heavenly and joyful anticipations they have sung and written and prophesied of this our day; but they died without the sight; we are the favored people that God has made choice of to bring about the Latter-day glory; it is left for us to see, participate in and help to roll forward the Latter-day glory.”
“Anyplace where the Saints gather is Zion, which every righteous man will build up for a place of safety for his children.”
“There will be here and there a Stake [of Zion] for the gathering of the Saints. … There your children shall be blessed, and you in the midst of friends where you may be blessed. The Gospel net gathers of every kind.
“… We ought to have the building up of Zion as our greatest object. … The time is soon coming, when no man will have any peace but in Zion and her stakes.”
“In regard to the building up of Zion, it has to be done by the counsel of Jehovah, by the revelations of heaven.”
“If Zion will not purify herself, so as to be approved of in all things, in His sight, He will seek another people; for His work will go on until Israel is gathered, and they who will not hear His voice, must expect to feel His wrath. Let me say unto you, seek to purify yourselves, and also all the inhabitants of Zion, lest the Lord’s anger be kindled to fierceness. Repent, repent, is the voice of God to Zion; and strange as it may appear, yet it is true, mankind will persist in self-justification until all their iniquity is exposed, and their character past being redeemed, and that which is treasured up in their hearts be exposed to the gaze of mankind. I say to you (and what I say to you I say to all,) hear the warning voice of God, lest Zion fall, and the Lord swear in His wrath the inhabitants of Zion shall not enter into His rest.”
“So long as unrighteous acts are suffered in the Church, it cannot be sanctified, neither can Zion be redeemed.”
Not only are we not some special chosen people to gather Zion, if we do not purify ourselves as Joseph Smith directly taught, the Lord will choose another people to do the gathering. This is right in line with the Saviors teaching multiple times when he was among the Nephites what would happen if we gentiles reject the gospel.
I thought of Zeezrom before Alma and Amulek and then Helaman’s endorsing of the doctrine that Christ did not come to save us in our sins. He came to save us from our sins. I am convinced that as a church, we have adopted the ideology that Christ will save us in our sins and that is why we are so afraid to speak about obedience to the commandments as we emphasize repentance and mercy over obedience and justice. When receiving some pushback from my dear wife that this was too harsh, I asked her. Do you want a husband who refuses to control his anger, then repents for being angry all the time? Would you want a husband who constantly views pornography, but repents of it regularly? I gave several other examples but you get my point. The beauty of Christ’s Atonement is not that we can always repent but that with him and through him we can overcome sin. I thought of Brad Wilcox’s beautiful analogy of comparing practicing the piano with repentance. However, I don’t think he implied that the lord wants us to keep practicing Row, Row, Row your boat all your life. He actually expects, demands, and even commands that we actually learn to play the piano and move on to ever more difficult pieces to master. Christ did not come to save us in our sins. He came to save us from our sins. We have significantly strayed from that truth in the church.

It's called the "pride" flag. It was originally used for the pride demonstrations. It means they take pride in their sexual identity and activities. It was used to lobby for gay marriage. The message is that gay marriage and gay sexual activities are not only ok, but good. The entire message of the flag is in direct contradiction to the doctrine of the church. When it is waved, it means "your religion is wrong".
And then they added the blue and pink triangle. That means that those who wave it think that gender can be changed, and that men can be woman and vice versa. It once again, is in direct contradiction to doctrine. It means "your churches teachings on gender and sex are wrong".
Those who try to claim it is otherwise are gaslighting us. It is not allyship. It is agreement. It's agreement with falsehoods that contradict God's teachings.

My daughter, a very innocent minded lovely girl who desires righteousness, when she received her youth book that just came out, she turned immediately to the page about sexual attraction and her eyes widened and she felt ashamed that the church would say same sex attraction is not a sin. It was confusing to her. Because, she is told not to think lustful thoughts about anyone (by the church -law of chastity). Yet somehow it is okay for these people to dwell on these feelings. We have gotten here accepting this behaviour of thought and feelings not being in control by our spirits little by little and by not speaking up as to what is exactly true. None of us should be "going there.". In saying that is okay then you almost encourage those thoughts and desires in our youth. That is actually a terrible.thing to do.

He left the Church and immediately started dating his future husband. I did attend his wedding. It was so hard and painful. I kept my eyes down. But I did it because it's not worth putting a strain in our relationship if I refused to attend just to prove my belief. He knows unequivocally that his parents love him and his husband, but he also knows that we do stand by and for the family proclamation which hangs prominently on our wall. Yes, the job of a prophet is to point people to Christ, and the prophets are doing that. Yes, the Lord is allowing the wheat and the tares to grow together --as the parable says, it's not until everyone is fully ripe that we can tell the difference between the good and the evil--that's why Jesus specifically chose those plants to use in His parable. As Elder Andersen reminded in October conference, the Lord said in D&C 86 that faith was weak, and there are children of His who He would love to save, and this earth is the place for each person to decide their loyalty to God or not, and He has to wait until each person definitively makes their choice of Him or not, and He isn't going to rush that, but honor our ability to act for ourselves and choose. But He will be with those who choose Him. All of this *is* the plan of salvation, that's exactly what's going on here, happening as individually as there are people.

Great video. And great comments here. I've kept my finger on the pulse of these things for a long, long time. I've seen the progression. I've also read the books by Rod Dreher, and follow his blog, where he has spent a long time documenting how diabolic forces slowly co-opt churches and Christianity.
I will say this: it's going to get worse. A lot worse. Be prepared.

What does the pride flag represent? Each color has a meaning, and it's not what you might think - each color represents an aspect of the ancient idolatrous gods that Israel was told not to worship.
Check out The Return of the Gods by Jonathan Cahn.

Now now did you think Satan was going to let those words go unchallenged. Every good thing presented in this world get equal time from the opposition that’s part of the design down here. Joseph Smith - Karl Marx -and on and on it goes.

The phrase "our LGBTQ brothers and sisters" IS rainbow flag allyship. I know people that don't want to be associated with the identity group name that are same-sex attracted, just as they don't want to be associated with the rainbow flag. LGBTQ = Rainbow flag (to most people). I don't believe the church intended to give the message that they SUPPORT a gay lifestyle, but that's unfortunately the message they gave, as portrayed in Desert Books latest publication...helping to keep the confusion and convolusion going.

Greg thanks for doing these videos. I know you try to be honest while being compassionate and that probably is why you get flack from both sides. Honestly I think you keep it very well balanced. Sheri Dew maybe needs to be asked about this video from D.B. and see if she is even aware of it. Maybe she is..? But I do agree it definitely seems to bump up against what we have been taught about chastity from an early age.

When we single out a particular group within the church for special attention we are admitting we can't trust members to exercise true charity on their own. And where does that take us? Do we need a special flag and a course of instruction to teach people how to treat a disabled person? A homeless person? What about a flag for all the single parents in the church? Then, of course, we must have a flag and a course for how to talk to the recovering drug addict. and, certainly, for anyone whose skin is a different color than your own just to make sure he knows we consider him different from the rest of us. Maybe we should teach a class on how to engage people with crippling shyness. Or--- Why not just treat every person like someone who is worth as much as you are--isn't that what Christ did?. Isn't that what true charity is all about? If you can do that the rest will follow. The Spirit will nudge you along if you are sincerely trying.
As for the rainbow flag I am stunned that any church affiliated entity would encourage its use. To do so implies tacit church approval for behaviors and activities anywhere that flag is flown. I find it hard to believe that the authorities at Deseret Book are so naive as to suppose otherwise. Seems to me what this is really all about is virtue signaling, which is just about as far from authentic charity as you can get.

A thought that came to mind as I listened to your podcast was that understanding what our choices are and will be, and what we really, truly want for ourselves, is tied more closely to the veil of forgetfulness than we will ever be able to understand while we live our mortal lives. It seems like such a random thought to me but it also feels like a concept that is more powerful than I can really appreciate.

I appreciate you bringing this to light in a very kind and fair manner. I never thought I would find myself not wanting to be someone’s “Ally”but the language has been corrupted. I can be their friend though. So disappointed in Deseret, Book and and Sherry, Dew. has she even watched these videos?

It’s not really the language. It’s the philosophy behind the language. Essentially they have in a sense declared war - if you are not for them you are against them and therefore you must convert or be destroyed. The missionary program of the church has not yet recognized that they have just run into Satan’s missionary program.

@Sheri Champneys I encourage you to make your own. That is what I did for FHE, our last one together before I deployed to Afghanistan. It will have more meaning to members of your family if you make it together like that. I had to abbreviate the words a little because my medium size BDU uniform was not big enough to fit a real man’s stature like Captain Moroni’s. But it is more dramatic if you tear it or cut it and use the back panel of the uniform like that. I have it still, I always will. Should I fall it will pass to my children.
