very good crash course! I was born and raised in Hawaii and Loved the show. I was also fortunate to catch a live version of the show in my hometown of Hilo.
I really liked the bleak ending of the anime and the closure Jiro got in "The Boy With The Guitar." It really helped the show stand out for me as being about Jiro's developing humanity rather than just the fights he got into. On a related note, my favorite heroic robot is MegaMan, particularly how he and his "family" are presented in the Protomen's rock opera series. The original plot of Mega Man drew inspiration from a lot of tokasatsu shows, particularly Kikaider as seen in the relationships between Mega Man and Protoman mimicking that of Kikaider and Hakaider.
Not a bad crash course for someone who didn't grow up with these. One of the things I loved about Kikaida was that it had a deeper story behind it -- your basic Pinocchio story about what it means to be human, which we later saw in "Blade Runner" and "A.I."

That being said, katakana is the 'alphabet' used to spell, or approximate, foreign words, or created words. If the word being approximated is 'rider', as in Kamen Rider, then 'rider' is spelled 'ライダー', and pronounced 'raidA'. But with Kikaida, the name comes from a combination of Japanese words and you can't reverse translate the 'DA' to 'DER'.
Kikaider is my all time favourite, great episode Michael! And really, check out the Ishinomori original manga, it's by far the best version of the story.

Coincidentally Ishinomori sensei also created the Kamen rider V3 series with character Kazami Shiro (Shiro meaning fourth son)

I personally liked the OG Tokusatsu version cause 1, I grew up in Hawaii watching this, and 2, I liked the music better than almost anything else!
