Every song that Ms. Osborne sings she takes and makes it her own. Yet another stellar performance from one of the most underrated singers of our times.
You would never know from this performance that this lady has one hell of a rasp. She can be as smooth as silk or as rough as sand paper. A very versatile singer.
Is she underrated or an artist who has not been bought by music industry? I am pretty sure she uses her own record label and also prefers to play at small venues and festivals. I've not heard of her performing in a sports stadium ever, which is understandable because the sound quality in those is awful. She could sell out colloseums if she wanted to, imo, if she had gone in that direction after her hit single "One of Us". But she is staying true to the music and is not selling out.
You make a great point. There must be a reason why Joan Osborne is not widely recognized as one of the great female singers over the last 30 years. I am sure that Taylor Swift and Beyonce are great ( not my cup of meat) but they are not more talented than Joan Osborne.
I don't usually go in for covers, but this is good! A room full of musicians, no autotune, no Beyonce style vocal hitches, just a woman belting out a classic Hall and Oates (or is it Hall & Oates?) song, and doing a damn good job of it, I might add.
I found Joan by accident and can't believe her talent. The woman can sing anything and she has soul!! Love her Motown music.........only she can repeat Sara Smile!! Awesome Joan!
Joan, you are one major talent girl, I play your take on What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted over and over again, I never tire of hearing your fantastic voice. Bless you.
She's the Al Green of our time... A truly effortlessly great singer. Rare and precious in a sea of talentless studio projects. No buttons, no adjustments needed, she has it. Keep posting, I'm really grateful!
I AGREE that Joan Osborne is underrated!!!! Her performance of "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted" in the movie "Standing in the Shadows of Motown" (with The Funk Brothers) is the BEST PART of the movie!. and, her version of Son of a Preacher Man is amazing.
Love this woman and her incomparable interpretations.I am humbled by how musicians free-flow through a piece of music they've heard oh so many times before. And yet, they add their own stamp to the song. How do they do it???!!!
She did a wonderful version of the Grateful Dead’s “Ripple” - made it her own just like this. (It seems to have disappeared from the internet though 😢)
I go all day with Joan Osborne songs in my head. I am grateful to her as her talent and passion for music enhances the quality of life for those who listen. Thanks also for You Tube and the people who tape her performances and put them up on you tube .Thank you.
Absolutely amazing, as always from Joan. To be in the studio and here a track this epic being layed down live. I think I'd have to take a few minutes to compose myself. Deeply moving.
I've been a Joan Osborne fan from the day I purchased "Relish" what 20 years ago? Her voice is still so rich and soulful. She can hold her own with the R&B/Blues elite. I had the pleasure of seeing her perform live here in St. Louis, Mo. at the Pageant Theater during the "Righteous Love" tour in 2002 and she did not disappoint. Truly a fantastic artist.
Joan is the most soulful Soul Sister Singing today. Her voice and passion for singing is as beautiful as she is. Don't miss her live- at the Grey Eagle in Asheville next week.
I first came across Joan in the BBC Four Transatlantic Sessions programme ... Folk musicians came together in what have been called ‘the greatest back porch show ever ... have a listen, she’s an outstanding performer without question 👌
I love it that she is understated. No hidous tattoos, not vulgar language, no dopey slang or trendy buzz-words and cliché's. And that gal can actually sing. Glad she's here.
First time for me listening to Joan. What a great voice! Silky, powerful, rich and solid. After all the pop junk that's plastered all over, it's nice to hear someone who can actually sing and hold a note.
I know this is a 6-year old comment and an (almost) 6-month old reply, but it bears a response. Quite frankly, saying "the recording industry sold out" is, no offense, an ignorant statement. The recording industry is the very definition of "selling out", at least in the way that artistic types use it. Record companies have only ever existed to sell records. They aren't some mythical, magical art patronage that at some murky point in history went from being "about the music" to being "about the money". They have always been about money. A record company is simply a loan company married to a distribution/shipping company who happens to specialize in music as a product. That's all they've ever been and all they need to be. To restate that: Record companies exist, and have always existed to loan money to independent contractors. Those contractors use that money to produce a product, and in consideration for the loan, the record company receives some amount of the profits on the sale of that product. That's all they've ever been and all they ever will be. Comparing Joan Osborne to Miley Cyrus to make that point is almost worse, too. Miley Cyrus would be about the opposite of what most people consider to be a "sell-out". That is, she *started* her career as a veritable shill and as she's aged she's gotten more independent and more artistic and much less concerned about anyone's opinion of her. That is, she's moved FROM "sell-out" TO "quirky artist", if you will. Instead of making sweeping, philosophical judgements about an entire industry (that we plainly do not really understand), why isn't it sufficient to say, "I really like Joan Osborne, she's a great singer", or "Wow, this song is really great, I really enjoyed this performance"? Actually I have theories on that, too, but I assume nobody is still reading at this point...
Cyrus is a poor example. Stripped down and with minimal accompaniment she can still sing. Britney Spears would be a better example. A lot of these pop icons are talented. It's just that perhaps their promotion exceeds that talent. Tween girls in large part determine what tops the charts. Few actually buy music these days, what is popular is determined by downloads and views.
👏🏾👏🏾❤️🥰❤️ #TeamJoanOsborne with that amazing BAND!!! All the Sara’s around the world are literally S😊M😊I😊L😊I😊N😊G again!! Great cover from the awesome hit makers and legendary Hall & Oates! 🤗🤗 I’m sure they’re proud to hear this perfected cover.
Such a beautiful, sweet soulful voice. This version is so laid back. It is a very calming version. I first came across Joan Osborne about a month ago with the Funk Brothers doing What becomes of the brokenhearted, and instantly appreciated how good her singing was. Since then I have liked her material and totally agree that she is so badly underrated.
I've seen a LOT of singers sing a lot of songs. But I've never seen ANYTHING like this. Joan gives it all she's got when she sings. The guy at the end said it all " HOLY SHIT JOAN"
They should remove the dislike button for this song. I'm glad I discovered Joan Osborne again the other day, hard to believe this is the same lady that sang One Of Us,her voice is beautiful on this H&O classic....love it!
Every song that Ms. Osborne sings she takes and makes it her own. Yet another stellar performance from one of the most underrated singers of our times.
Still true to this day
YES!!! Shes by far one of my favorite vocalists!!
She's not famous or at the top of social media, but she has a dozen albums to her credit. Somebody must like her - l sure do.
that voice, that delivery
i just melt
You would never know from this performance that this lady has one hell of a rasp. She can be as smooth as silk or as rough as sand paper. A very versatile singer.
Honey running over gravel.
Why is this artist so underrated!!! We love 💕 you Joan
I LOVE THIS WOMAN!!! it's a crying shame how under rated she is. I loves me some Joan
I agree 100 %!
I bet she keeps on the dl for a reason.. .. ...probably more free like that.
Cant get enough of Joan... Love her voice and passion.✌🏽🌹

Joan Osborne nailed this version of Sara Smile! She has soul and a rich, full voice! Magnificent!
I found Joan by accident and can't believe her talent. The woman can sing anything and she has soul!! Love her Motown music.........only she can repeat Sara Smile!! Awesome Joan!
Sara A is smiling right now. Impeccable!
Love it! She is totally loyal to the song as written - no silly vocalizations just singing straight - she's quite a talented singer
Joan, you are one major talent girl, I play your take on What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted over and over again, I never tire of hearing your fantastic voice. Bless you.
I looooove her.
Alan Morgan- That performance with The Funk Brothers is absolutely Stunning

Soul from deep within.
Comes from the heart. keep feeling the music love it.
Would love to hear this with John or Daryl in harmony. Wish she had done Live at Daryl's House. Joan is a treasure

Absolutely Breathtaking 🥰
That’s her!
One of the best singers ever from Kentucky! Love her voice.
I was never a big fan of hers until this. So glad someone suggested I listen to it.
A beautiful song, and as usual Joan did a wonderful job with it.
She is the best R+B cover singer alive right now. Hands down. All her albums are good.
I never tire of listening this phenomenal voice.

Love ya Joan! Thank you for all the great things you have done for all of us!
I just finished watching The Funk Brothers. Never knew about them ! And I love R & B ! I saw Joan sing and what a wonderful voice she has ! Loved it.
Joan is the most soulful Soul Sister Singing today. Her voice and passion for singing is as beautiful as she is. Don't miss her live- at the Grey Eagle in Asheville next week.
Stunning, every bit as good as the original - She doesn't just sing it she feels the song on some deep level and then shares that with us.
The ever soulful and talented Joan Osborne. I've been a fan since 1991.
Me too, but, don't recall the exact year?
Every time I hear her sing a tune, It still blows my mind. Fantastic
New respect for Joan! Killing it awesome
Just learned maybe two years ago what she's been doing. Just great!
I first came across Joan in the BBC Four Transatlantic Sessions programme ... Folk musicians came together in what have been called ‘the greatest back porch show ever ... have a listen, she’s an outstanding performer without question 👌
I second this emotion
I love it that she is understated. No hidous tattoos, not vulgar language, no dopey slang or trendy buzz-words and cliché's. And that gal can actually sing. Glad she's here.
Joan, absolutely well done. Love it. Thanks to whoever posted this.
really great version. Joan has a knack of making anything she sings sound like her own as was said b the producer at the end .Nice work
Great rendition! Love this performance!
This is absolutely wonderful. Joan just nails the Philadelphia sound. Great at both the Motown and Philadelphia sounds!
Joan Osborne is so soulful and her interpretation of this song is beyond great! Such an expressive voice! Listen and enjoy!
In the Shadows of Motown led me here.damn, how have I missed Joan......what a voice!I grew up on Motown et al, and Joan just has that and more, Wow!
Me too!, isn't Shadows----- one of the greatest things ever?
This is such a well written song, and this live version's got a great, smooth feel to it :)

Beautiful rendition of a stellar song. What a voice!
I love Joan Osborne.
This one is dedicated to my daughter on her birthday.
PLEASE SARAH SMILE! YOU ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE...I LOVE YOU!
First time for me listening to Joan. What a great voice! Silky, powerful, rich and solid. After all the pop junk that's plastered all over, it's nice to hear someone who can actually sing and hold a note.
Joan is a natural she doesn’t over do it her voice speaks volumes
Whoa!!! Where has this gal been hiding herself!!! What a voice!!!
When did the recording industry sell out. I'll take Joan Osborne over Miley Cyrus any day!
1999 we lost it all with the rise of Teeny bopper groups and the rise of Pop music.

When wss Millie and that other guy vinnilli exposed? I wonder if she ever faked it? No I don't. ;)

I crushed on her so hard as a young teen. Still think she is amazing. Love Joan so much
Well my goodness, isn't that spectacular? Thanks Joan and the great band!

I've seen a LOT of singers sing a lot of songs. But I've never seen ANYTHING like this.

she puts so much soul into this incredible song
Big fan of The Hall and Oates version, and this works. Good job.
Beautiful . You and the band .
