You know when you get a random idea and think, hey that would be a cool thing to do, but you never end up actually doing it? Well this time when I had the random idea to build a 12 foot wide 3 foot high skate ramp, I decided I was actually going to do it. This is how it was done.

9:45 now drain that pool on the other side of the garden and you have a perfect skatepark!
forton hahahaha. It’s a bit of a tight curve to the bottom 😂
Good work. I would make some suggestions. 12’ span for 2x4 is a lot. I would make 4 sections 6’ wide yo give you more structure. Also traditionally the top layer is 2 layers of 1/2” ply and the the final riding surface (1/4 inch sanded marine birch ply.
Looks good. It would be great to get an update after some time to see how it hold up.
If I do that I would have to make extra of those curved frame pieces right?
Yup 4 more.
I think those are 2x6's they are using
what a nice spot to chill in summer, under the shadow of those trees
Didn’t he say he built it in he girlfriends parents backyard imagine they breakup then there will be no more ramp for him
That was the first thing i thought 😂
Imagine going for some stuff a month later and finding another dude skating on the ramp with the girl cheering lol
Hahahaha 😂 true true. But we’ve been together for 8 years now, so odds are it will last!
Luke Bell 8 years and u ain’t propose
@@zanemance6431 lmao fax
ive watched a lot but this video had a good detail on how to tell if its leveled
It helps to cut a transition for the middle of both sides when you go any distance over 8ft wise but that looks sturdy.
True! It's strong enough though to be honest.
You and your dad are too clever! Thanks for the promo code. Will try it out
Amazing! Thanks Camilla ☺️ I hope you enjoy Skillshare as well!
What did you do to make it weather proof so the rain dosnt warp plywood
We just used some water based exterior wood sealer/varnish. And when it’s going to rain we cover it up with a huge plastic sheet to protect the wood further.
@@LukeMaximoBell1 I used to have a mini ramp, I used the wood protection coating/paint and 2 tarpaulins to cover it up but the wood still got messed up, the rain would eventually start to seep through the tarps. My advice would be to make sure the tarpaulin is very thick and definitely look into getting this waterproof sheet stuff (can't remember what it's called) that you will layer over the ply wood. This stuff also makes it smoother to skate and no splinters! Although I live in England so.. maybe rain isn't as big a problem for you as it was for me. Nice video!
Use treated plywood and timber - I have a 4.5 high miniramp that I built end of 2010 and have only had to replace the top layer of ply twice. It's still solid as and I've never covered it
Sick design and build! Would you share the dimensions for it?, would love to try building one myself! Also do you know of any material / company in CT that supplies skatelite like material to cover the plywood?
This comment is a couple years old so idk if you're still looking for an answer to this, but Rampage Skateparks in Bridgeport would be a good place to reach out to.
should be titles DIY 3-Foot Mini Ramp
some will come expecting an actual full-on vert ramp
Hahahaha, fair enough! I know OC ramps labels their ramps in width. Which is why I did it that way for this one.
Should of laid the second layer of ply at a 45 angle so the joints are off set from the ones underneath
Crazy how wood is now triple the price
Unfortunately 😓
Very nice build! Good job!
You have a awesome backyard for a backyard skatepark
I always have random ideas and think it would be really cool to do but never carry through with them. maybe I should. awesome video
Do it! You won’t regret it 😊
Nice construction ♥️♥️
Thanks! Much appreciated ☺️
I am so jealous
Why wold you make it 12 feet wide i have a half pipe in my back yard and it is only 8 feet wide
Wider carves and slides, longer grinds, doubles runs….
hi dude ! great mini ramp !
can you share the sketchup file, i would like o build one too. thanks :)
Did you email me?
Hey! Great job! It's my dream to have something like this :) It's a chance to get somewhere the exact dimensions of this ramp?
Nice ramp but deeper back platform would do it well
Great channel and great quality, excellent 👏
Thanks man!!
Are you able to share the plans/sketchup file ?
Yes sure. Send me an email. Address is in the video description.
NIce work....can I ask what software you used? Generic CAD package? cheers
ay Luke .. sic- grip it and rip it!! RAMP LOCALS for life!
Thanks Nathan! Much appreciated ☺️🙌🏼
Holy shit I thought I was watching a channel with maybe 10 million subs but no I’m gonna go sub now like idk how I’m really confused how you don’t have more subs sorry for my language edit: I’m also confused how I got here I was looking up how to make a tobacco pipe and found this I’m fine with that tho since I enjoy skateboarding
Haha thanks so much! It’s awesome getting comments like this. I always try to keep my videos at a high standard so I’m really glad you felt that way and enjoyed the video 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
sick, but what do you do about the holes the screws make? Do you fill each hole with plaster or something?
Could I get a list of things needed including easy use tools to build would love to build a replica in my front yard
no coping bump? seems flush with the ply which is not ideal
How much would this project cost to build. I’ve been looking for a good tutorial to build one and this is it but I need a number on the price.
Aidan Crow same
@ 1k how? With stolen wood?
For us it was $600 USD. Maybe wood is a lot cheaper in South Africa?
Ok thanks.
Luke Bell how much cheaper did skull share make it? And also how long is it?
Impact gun!!
yo whats the length of this ramp
What degree is the drop in and how long is the ramp in total feet?
Can you give us the sketchup file?
12 ft WIDE mini ramp
Great effort and result fellas 👍 What are the size of those plywood sheets? 1200mm x2400mm?
Ha, Good work ! Clever
Thanks Mark!
Hey, what type of ply did you use to cover your frame? I know it has to be pliable so it will take the shape of the frame.
probably 3/4" sanded ply
@@davidgerth2276 more like 3/8
You have to paint it to protect it from bad weather
What are the measurements you used?
How long was the ramp
About $600. But I think it was a lot cheaper because we are in South Africa.
I mean dimensions
What is the cost of this?
600 bucks aint bad at all.. I def. building one soon as I get a nice backyard.. I may go 4ft or 5ft high tho.. mini ramps are so fun..
I realized it was closer to $850 when I went through the costs again. Still well worth it! Just add up a bill of materials at local prices first. We got the wood for pretty cheap in South Africa.
@@LukeMaximoBell1 still thats not bad.. I built a 16ft wide x 10ft tall ramp when I was 18.. I cant wait to build a mini,,
Buildit almost the same mini and skated it on my channel
Awesome ramp and great video!!
Could you explain a little more in depth how you were using the clear tube with water to get the ramp leveled. I’m from California and I’ve built several ramps but that is a new way to get level. I love that but I don’t fully understand how it works. Thanks in advance
Sure thing. Basically if you fill a tube with water. Because of how gravity works when the water is settled, it will be at the same exact level on either side of the tube. You can make a tube 300 feet long and once the water settles, it will be exactly the same height at both ends of the tube. Pretty awesome! So it’s great for leveling over long distances.
Water is always level it just is
Hey man love the vid< i was just wondering how much the wood costed all up? cheers
Hey Hey! Sure thing. It was R9k or $500.
Luke Bell howzit you from South Africa? Did you use marine ply?
What kind of ply wood? Normal?
Normal plywood. Covered with epoxy
Love the Vid! What are the length, width, and height dimensions?
12 feet wide, 3 feet high. and about 23 feet long.
Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t a 12’ vert suppose to be 12’ in height?
there is no vert in this ramp. the ramp is 12ft wide and 3ft high.
Could i get the design file your dad made by any chance?
Here is the sketchup file www.dropbox.com/s/ltxgftut9hzfhp3/half%20pipe.skb?dl=0
The good thing is when you fall it'll have a lot of Give to it, you shouldn't hurt yourself too bad. Looks good but it was engineered completely bad You would have to have 2 / 12 every foot almost. To spend that far sound anywithout any bracing in the center That is if you want it solid and not flex
Hello please dimensions
Could you please tell me how much it would cost to do the exact same thing and what I need to do it? I would really appreciate it
this is super late but they said in a previous reply it was a total of $850 for all of the materials :)
Can u send me the blueprint link or whatever please?
What thickness plywood did you use ?
Hey! 2 layers of 6mm plywood. ☺️
awesome video, how much was the overall cost of the ramp. thinking of building one myself.
Previous comments were a bit inaccurate. We paid about $850 for the wood and materials! But I think South Africa is cheaper than the States. Try and get low grade wood for the cross beams. It doesn’t need to be good looking wood.
what types of plywood your using? and thickness
2 layers of 6mm thick plywood. Just standard plywood. Nothing special.
@@LukeMaximoBell1 It's probably sturdier to use 1 (minimum) or 2 (better) layers of 9mm plywood and as top layer 6mm birch plywood (or Skatelite).
why didn't you just empty the pool?:D looks like a nice bowl:) just kidding, great job!!
Does this mini vert work with scooters and BMX
I can’t see why not!
"Mini vert" ? There's no "vert" in this ramp .
Going to be a deathtrap the minute your ply starts to warp.
Should have staggered the top and bottom layers in a diaganol pattern accross the ramp instead of just puzzle piece slapping them on.
It's been 4 months and nothing yet :) We do cover it whenever rain is coming. We would have crosshatched the plywood, but didn't realise we needed 2 layers.
Hey Steeze, can you explain this to me as I'm about to build a ramp this week. 2 sheets of 3/8'' ply with a final layer of masonite on top. You're saying both 3/8'' sheets should be diagonal but in opposite directions? And then lay the masonite diagonally on top as well? My ramp's indoors for now so do you think it's necessary? Thanks dude
Always thought ''12 foot'' means 12 feet high?
True! It could!
Hey but how long did you make it since it’s 12 feet wide
About 22 feet long.
What was wrong with the plywood at 4:13? Couldn’t understand the word you used. Bowed? Blue? Bleh? ;)
Nice job a bit too much flat though I’d say would be a lot better to skate with a foot or two less flat
Fair enough. I feel like it’s fine though but that’s all personal preference.
around 6100mm or 20ft is nice indeed
Love u from Pakistan
Thanks so much 😊
i saw a lot of pumping effort...maybe a lil to Flat.?? or bad bearings
how much did it cost
About $600 USD. Cheaper in South Africa than America though I think.
Wood is twice as much now? The pandemic really blows
No skatelite??
Skatelite is SOOO expensive :O
@@LukeMaximoBell1 Have you looked into gatorskins, or skaterblend? I have skaterblend on my ramp and it was pretty cheap comparatively, but works just as well.
MasonGillis I will look into it. I imagine being in South Africa would make it impossible to get. That sounds like the perfect solution though.
Only if I had a lot of backyard space
Idk if you said it in the video, but how much did this cost to build?
No worries. I didn’t say in the video. It was R9k or $500 usd.
Luke Bell Okay thanks a lot!
Sorry, I re-ran the numbers and it was closer to $850. But wood is cheaper in SA! So just check local prices first. Also don’t go for the most expensive wood. It’s just not necessary.
Ieeeeeee THINK you MIGHT be holding that level...... wrong.. maybe... I think............
☝
in the 90s a 12Foot Half Pipe meant 12foot *high* .. not long ...
great video but title is confusing. This is a 3-4ft mini ramp. a 12 ft halfpipe is what tony hawk did a 900 in.
12ft wide
3ft high
why put 5 adds in 10 min vid
But that pool tho
I thought he meant 12 foot tall
thats a mini ramp, not a half pipe
Nice ramp, but that coping seems to be too deep
It is in the Centre. When we renovate it we will fix the coping.
Your girlfriends parents house!!??😱
I’m building a 20 ft ramp
Beat that
That would be epic!
It’s true bro thanks for the heart
Hi guys, wanna asking about how to measure the transition? Give me centimeter not inches or foot, because easier for me to understand
Thanks guys
Hey hey! It’s 200cm
between 200cm and 210cm is great for a ramp like this size
Hope you don’t break up with your girlfriend
Coping looks horrid and sits far to far back
It works just fine ☺️
Hey what radius did you use for the transition?
I can’t remember exactly, but I will double check and let you know!
It’s 2m!
