Nice video, JS...fun to listen to you and give us the History of your purchases especially the '65-like Strat. I am glad regardless of the money that you bought it for yourself. Life's way too short, JS. It is your money you deserve the benefits of it. Stay well, brother! PS...I am sitting here holding my second electric I purchased, back in 2020, which was on your recco...FF338 in Cherry Red. Love it.

That's some nice Jimi playing, Jimmy! That Fender looks immaculate, and shows that "relic'ing" is not inevitable - it should have about 1/3 "blemishes" of a 40 year old by now. I can now recognize those beaked Indio Strats from a mile away now - great guitars!

Have the relic Tele, the relic job makes my inner child very happy for some reason, lol! The pickups are great, I wouldn't change them, though I'm just a living room player. Noticed at the Garden that they have changed the designation on the Gibson style guitars, from FFLP to FFSP, and FFDC to FFTC, which now shows as sold out. Congratulations on 200 episodes, and a good start to 300!

I got the new black and purple ash body FFST... It came with staggered locking tuners (but it still had string trees because break angle is a thing), and I have it on good authority that the bridge is the same bridge that Gotoh puts their logo on. The only things I had to do to it was replace the cracked nut, and gouge the boat jack cavity's wide end about 3mm so the instrument cable would seat properly.

The 30% (code Extra 30) will not work on all of them however as some of them are already marked down considerably. I think a lot of it is the “Covid” lockdown guitar sales boost enjoyed by all these manufacturers is over, and they have found themselves with an abundance of inventory. Oh by the way I have looked at your video on the Monoprice sr 15 watt guitar 🎸 amp and it’s like you said it would be a better deal to buy the cabinet with the vintage 30 than to buy the raw vintage 30 speaker and swap it out of the guitar 🎸 amp and replace the 70/80 because for 30 bucks more you can buy the cabinet and the vintage 30 and it is worth the money for a great sound and a good quality guitar 🎸 cabinet so thanks for sharing that video with us.

I can dig your idea of a well playing cheap guitar, it's in the nature of rock and roll to play affordable guitars, that's what stratocasters were back in the 60's. And yet, there is something else to playing a well made guitar like a Custom Shop, and I don't deny the joy that kind of guitar brings. Are they spendy, well yeah, but I think if you can afford it and you're solidly into playing guitar, then get one because it is worth it.

Then I got a relic V6 from Vintage, and I got a couple of the Road Worn models (50's and 60's) from Fender. My FFST is the natural ash, non-relic. So, I didn't go out and drop thousands on a Custom Shop relic...I can no longer say that I wouldn't though. The truth is that they're comfortable guitars that inspire me to make sweet sounds come out of them. That's all that matters.

Yes, depending on what I am doing or trying to do, each guitar and pickup combination has a unique/different sound or vibe to it which of course dictates what EQ or amp setting you will go with for that particular sound. This is why I DID NOT adjust anything, and played them all in the same pickup configuration (kept off the humbucker in the two HSS models) to see/hear how they react under the same circumstances. The Fender is only a 3 way, so put that in the “in-between” mode to try and emulate position 4 of the 5 way switching of the others. Again, appreciate it! 🎸👍

Hi Mark…thanks for watching and commenting. I have a few all ash body guitars, and yes..ash tends to be a heavier dense wood. They are not LP heavy, but still pretty hefty! Thanks for stopping in!! 🎸👍

FACT: I don’t like Strats! I prefer Teles. 😂 (Even though I do have a couple of Strats, too.) But WOW… I am beginning to think I got lucky with my Monoprice Indio Cali DLX, which is a cherry redburst just like yours… Well, mine weighs “just” 8.5 lbs… And I thought mine was a bit on the heavy side!!!! 😂 So it seems like Ash bodies do tend to be HEAVY for some reason. If memory serves me correctly, the Firefly is claiming “roasted Ash,” and I would think this might make it slightly lighter, but it doesn’t look like it makes a terribly huge difference with the FFST… So I’m now wondering: Were the original Fender Ash-bodied Telecasters of the 1940s-50s originally that heavy?!? Also, KUDOS to Firefly for including a full-size Trem block!!!! I didn’t realize the Monoprice Cali DLX didn’t even have a full size block… That said, I’ve never really noticed, and the 2-point Wilkinson system still seems VERY good for tuning stability on a non-locking system!

Hi PG…as far as Strat’s go…I am right there with you. You did get lucky! I have a few ash bodied guitars from different manufacturers and they are all pretty heavy. Of course even same models from the same manufacturer will vary in weight a bit as is evidenced in our DLX Plus models. Not sure about the “old” Tele’s, but my 2000 American Fender is Swamp Ash and is over 8 lbs as well…

Hey man…thanks so much for watching and commenting! Funny…I do like the sound of the ceramic singles on the Monoprice Cali Classic’s and they are hard to beat at the price point. The FF Strat’s on the new batches are very well equipped and hard to beat @ the $200 price point. I actually prefer a nice Tele over a Strat, but you got to have a few “Strats” in the herd….🎸👍

They used to sell them on Amazon initially, but stopped as the selling fee was too high and cut into the already slim profit margins. FF is a small business, and they only do small batches of guitars at a time. Monoprice is a much larger company. Have you looked at TEASE guitars? Same type of situation as FF but the business is headquartered in NY. I have one of their Tele’s (don’t have their Strat) but some good things coming from them for the $$….
Like all budget guitars (or any actually) that you buy online, you could get one that needs some fret dressing, setup needs. I have a number of Monoprice guitars, some needed fret end dressing, restringing and typical setup with string height/intonation etc…but nothing I wouldn’t expect. Some came needing very little…same with IYV, Firefly, Grote, Squier, and so on….

I got the FFST (SRV) and it looks great, but the pickups tones sound like they're in a tin can full of old rags. I can usually tweak my amp to compensate for mediocre pic up tones, but they annoy the heck out of me, no matter the height position...which when I got the guitar they were in the maxed height killing sustain and affecting overall sound. I lowered them to the same height as my Partscaster (Strat) w vintage 57-62 pups. That guitar sings, in all 5 positions. The FF...um..nope. the first FF of 9 that sounds like poo. Oh, well, that's what loaded pickgaurds are for.

Hi Rob…sorry to hear that…don’t know what they used in that model Strat…did they include Alnico 5’s in that model? I know sound and “tone” are personal preferences in part, but others who have that model have said it sounds pretty good….strange indeed, but congrats anyway and I am sure you will get it to sound how you need it to….🎸👍

Relic'd Tele got here. Base quality compared to my pink Strat and pink HH/trem Tele is very lacking: I can't recommend this one, and I absolutely would discourage anybody from paying the premium for anything in the recent tele collection. And that would especially discourage anyone who does not do their own tech work from buying this particular guitar. This one is not an out of the box player.
I'm not on Facebook, you are welcome to share my comments there if you are. I'm afraid people are going to think I'm being a cold wet towel about this but a lot of this stuff is worth mentioning.
I think the relicing thing is a gimmick, I don't think Firefly gets it. From a distance it's very punk, but up close you can see chatter marks in the wood from the guy who hits the paint job with a die grinder and a bunch of stuff like that. I don't feel it's as serious and offering as their other stuff. Appearances aside here's a list of some of the other real world practical stuff about the lackluster construction and fit of this particular instrument--
Bottom of the neck pocket has a gouge 2/3 the length from the bridge end, almost an inch wide, 3/32 at its deepest; pocket too wide, enough it needs shimmed on the high E side; needed 1/20" shim under to get the saddles high enough for palm muting. Neck shim means nut slots need recut to get the string height at the first fret right.
It's a crap neck pocket route, worse than the worst Glarry's I've seen and should have gotten this body pulled off the line.
Neck has a much cheaper feel than the 2 guitars I got in the last 2 months. Rosewood is coated with that weird waxy stuff that I usually scrape off so I can actually condition the board. The profile is odd, shoulders are high, the C is shallow. It's comfortable and playable but if they were paying attention to what they were doing a black guard slab body would have a nice beefy neck, maybe not a U but a nice soft V. It should fight you back a little.
Pickguard is weird, I put my replacement humbucker guard on, notched and fit for the truss rod adjuster wheel and not a single screw hole lined up. The original is a much shorter to follow the much shorter lower bout cut out and horn. Fender replacement ones will fit but not a single screw will have a hole, lol! You'll have to move the control plate up just less than an 1/8".
At first glance the relicing was corny but I realized the hardware relicing was accomplished by someone on a assembly line standing at the end of each guitar with a sandblasting gun randomly blasting every chrome thing, loaded control plate, loaded pickup, bridge, then it gets flipped over and the backs of the tuners and the keys get sandblasted. I've got sandblasting media in my tuners, not good, and in the neck pickup and the route under the pickguard.
That said the strap buttons are absolutely perfectly brand new, as is (and this one actually made me laugh out loud,) the jack plate. If there's anywhere on any old guitar that has dents and scratches from the tip of your instrument cable it's the wood around the jack plate and all that wood is perfect as is the paint, hilarious.
I was right to say that this will be a super easy paint job to strip, It is just the pigment coat that usually goes on before they shoot it with an 1/8" of clear, it'll sand right off.
Set up was not. At all. You could have run a ski lift off the strings at the 17th fret.
Still need to recut the nut and I haven't put the rocker on the frets yet. Honestly I don't expect any problems neck wise.
The whole thing weighs 7 lb. Super light for a slab mahogany body. I know it would be kind of a weird to complain about a light guitar but I really think the body on this one is questionable, like they found a batch of remainder bodies that had paint defects before they got hit with clear and decided to jump on the relic bandwagon. Maybe that's cynical but the other two fireflies I have are pretty incredible.
This one is not worth the premium $219 price they're asking, at all. I would have still been a little wrangled if it had been $160.
I'm keeping it because I'm not going through shipping it back and wrangling an exchange if only because all of the examples of this particular model are going to be as consistently crappy as this one, I'm certain. So count me as learned.
I can fix all this stuff, I got it to make a Broadcaster/Nocaster. I'm not harshing, but I'm defnitely surprised FF decided to sell something so plainly at this degree of cheap&lousy.

Hi oldasrocks9121… So sorry to hear this, but certainly appreciate your stopping in and sharing your thoughts.
I can only say that yours is the 1st that I have heard of with all these issues, regardless of the impact of the relic job and associated issues with that. I know I had to do quite a bit of work on my Classic Vibe Jazzmaster to get it “playable” and that was a $450 guitar, so this does happen. Like you, I kept it and sorted out the issues, but it is disappointing in the end. I will pass on your feedback and experience to Firebird Music…thanks so much for stopping in! 🙏🎸
