    Yes, new strings.. well stretched will help.. the delicate balance of that knife edge trem and the locking nut (many issues can be at the nut).. as if the string break angle across the nut is not parallel to the angle of the nut their is too much tension on the nut lock and the strings can slip.. is why 98% of floyd roses have string retainers behind the nut to make sure the break angle is perfect and the locking nut has less stress pushing down in the strings.. moist likely its the strings which are not helping you at the moment.. FF is stepping their game up for sure..

    I got same model guitar but in white. The locking nut was low quality and stripped out. The main problem though is the break angle of the strings isn’t enough. I replaced the nut with Gotoh one and added a string retainer. Guitar stays in tune great now.

    Good video Jimmy! I bought my 1st tremolo guitar and my last, a blue FFST a month ago and it would not tune, let alone stay in tune. I would get one string in tune and the string next to it (that I just tuned) would go out of tune and so on...I tried adjusting the spring tension and that helped a little, but not enough. Guitars are hard enough to play without having to deal with this!! I was ready to return it when I found a couple of videos on tuning issues with Floyd Rose style tremolo systems and decided to just turn this beautiful looking and sounding guitar into a "solid bridge" guitar by blocking the tremolo!! It took me less than 10 minutes to do...Level the bridge, open the spring cover and put wood blocks in front and behind the metal tremolo bar. My guitar now has no tremolo (I really never wanted) but stays in PERFECT tune. It sounds and looks AMAZING for just $200.00 from Guitars-garden!!

    • @JimmyStewart1
      @JimmyStewart1  4 місяці тому

      Hi Scott! Thanks so much for watching and commenting. Yes, sometimes it can be a bit frustrating setting up a FR style trem bridge. It is quite easy to just block it (especially if you don’t use it anyway) for sure. I will work on it to determine the best route to take. Truly appreciate your stopping into the channel and sharing! Much thanks..🎸👍

    Hey Jimmy,
    Looking closer at your video, it appears your nut locks are installed incorrectly.
    This can cause some string slippage at nut.....try turning the blocks so they are vertical not horizontal and see if that helps.
    I've seen this issue with Floyd Rose Specials as well.
    Let us know if it helps.
    JM

      Hi Zungle…thanks so much for watching and commenting. Yeah, initially I put them back on just as they had come off, but since I turned them vertically as well and it still goes out of tune with trem use. Stays in tune well as long as I don’t use the trem. I am just going to replace them and then do another setup when I change the strings. Truly appreciate your stopping into the channel, and thanks for sharing!! 🎸👍

      Hi Terry..thanks for stopping in. Yes, I do plan on it as soon as I get a more definite idea as to the cause and have the proper parts on hand (if needed) as right now I am thinking that the locking nut is (mostly) the culprit. A suggestion, Jimmy: You might want to give that guitar a new set of locking nut pads. It turns out that pads can wind up "imprinted" by the strings they're locking down. Once that happens, mixing them up will mean the guitar stays out of tune. I just had that happen with a brand new guitar and the new pad set really helped. Another thing that helped that guitar was installing a string retainer bar. My guitar lacked one, as does your Firefly. My guitar proved that that modification made a positive difference. Food for thought.

    • @JimmyStewart1
      @JimmyStewart1  4 місяці тому

      Hi Edwin…thanks so much for watching and commenting. I truly appreciate your suggestions and honesty think a new locking nut/pads may just be the solution. I really like the guitar Jimmy except for the Floyd Rose. My 3rd guitar I bought was a BC Rich that had a Floyd. It was a headache for me being a newer player. I had it for about 3 months and just couldn't deal with it. This was in the mid 90's way before UA-cam, so I was trying to learn how to set it up from friends and the guitar shop where I purchased it. After 3 months I traded it in for a Fender Strat and vowed to never buy a Floyd guitar again. To this day that guitar still haunts me lol. I still refuse to buy any guitar with a Rose. I prefer to spend my time playing instead of having to spend an hour fine tuning everything. Changing strings was another nightmare for me. I have a Jackson, Ibanez & ESP for my metal music, but they darn sure don't have a Floyd. Sorry for my rant. Can't wait to see how your set up turns out!

    I'm too lazy to look and see if anyone else said the, so...
    The main reason this pickup sound better in split mode has to do with the winding of the pickup. It's probably around 13k-15k ohms, and when you split that you are in the 6.5k-7.5k, which is right in line with a regular Strat pickup. PAF types are wound at 8k total, split that and you're at 3.5k-4.5k ohms, making it under wound sounding like crap most of the time. Or, they could be some kind of magical AlNiCo blend... Either one. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

    1) You missed out, Odin!!!! 😂
    2) I think the headstock shape looks kind of like it’s meant to be Firefly’s take on a Kramer model. Specifically, it’s probably meant to be a copy of EVH’s 1980’s Signature model Kramer. As we also know, Eddie Van Halen was an early adopter of Floyd Rose, and he preferred bridge humbuckers and a single volume knob with no tone knob, which this guitar also has. This would also seem in keeping with the EVH-style “Frankenstrat” and the EVH-style Music Man-type models that Firefly had recently, which I’m not surprised sold out VERY quickly! If I had a choice, I’d probably go for the yellow FFMN they have right now, as it looks a lot more traditional, and has an offset Wolfgang-style body that’s almost like a cross between a Jazzmaster and a Les Paul.
    3) Regarding the Floyd Rose-style system: The fact that the strings seem to be going out of tune at different rates definitely suggests that the problem is NOT to do with binding at the bridge posts or springs. Guitar MAX also recently did a review of the EVH-style Firefly FFST, and he noted that the FR-style unit on the Firefly actually seems pretty decent, and has properly hardened “knife edges” around the posts, which seems hopeful. The patent on FR has expired now, so anyone can now make a FR-type system, and basically, it is now only necessary to take out a license if you want to put the FR stamp of approval for quality on it. A Floyd Rose system is AMAZING once it’s set up, but the problem is getting there, since it’s a such a royal pain in the neck to set up properly. 😂 GREAT, GREAT, GREAT sounding guitar though, just like your similar-style John 5 Ghost!

    You got the lock nut pieces on their sideways. They are concaved they only go on one way. Either way generic Floyd roses are just that generic. Some of them may work for a little while. Put the fulcrum point to get wore out from cheap metal.

    I'm sure that I wouldn't want a guitar that is so involved to tune! It would be a nightmare in the middle of a gig. I have enough problems with my Gibson Robo-Tuners.

    Nice review Jimmy. Been playing for 30 years, and yet to play a guitar with Floyd Rose style trem system. I generally like the simplicity of the guitar. This thing looks like it would frustrate me. Love Firefly, guitar sounds great though, nice playing.

      Hi MotorRad…Thanks so much for watching and commenting. Glad to hear you enjoyed it! This is also my 1st guitar with this type of FR system, and I have been playing for quite some time myself…not being a “shredder” type player I never saw the need. I do enjoy a trem system however, and the best I have used to date is the Steinberger system. You need double ball strings, but it’s really a thing of beauty and has been rock solid since I bought the guitar in the mid 80’s. I prefer a nice two point trem, and have also come to enjoy the Duesenberg Les Trem ll system. I am sure once I go through this to identify the issues, I will get it set properly. Truly appreciate your stopping into the channel and sharing your thoughts. Much thanks…🎸👍

    Reminds me of a Kramer Baretta. Almost bought one when I went to Guitar Garden after one of your recent videos with the new Firefly batch. And in the course of 3 days I (successfully?) Kept my impulsive nature in check, for the time being lol.
    Weird to me though, why waste money with locking tuners AND a locking nut/Floyd system? Seems like they could have brought the price down even farther and just put basic tuners on it.
    If I do get one, I might take those tuners off and put them on one of my other cheap guitars to upgrade. I have an old First Act I picked up at a thrift store for 25 dollars that actually is great to play but could use decent tuners.

      Hi Beau…thanks so much for watching and commenting. Good job on keeping your “impulsive nature” in check….😎
      The locking tuners do seem to be a bit redundant, but I still appreciate what FF is doing in the upgrade department for their newer models. Like you say, a free set of locking tuners for your First Act…🤣

    Firefly needs to slow down a little and get the little things right. You can see even on this guitar that the tuner holes were misaligned. That should be easy to do right with a CNC and some kind of template. But they just seems to pump out so many guitars as fast as they can that they miss little things like that. I got a Firefly FFST that the plug wouldn't go in far enough to click and had to fix it.

    • @JimmyStewart1
      @JimmyStewart1  4 місяці тому +1

      Hi Joe…thanks so much for watching and commenting. I don’t disagree with you, however we all know that getting these guitars at these price points requires some compromises, especially when it comes to overall QC. Some of these little things get missed…happens with all guitar brands from time to time. It’s not like going to your local Guitar Store where the guitar was unboxed and gone over and setup prior to being displayed. I didn’t notice a misalignment with the tuners…will have to look again…🤔

    • @jorge-_-reza
      @jorge-_-reza 4 місяці тому +1

      I just paused the video on the close-up of the headstock. The tuners look to line up with the contour of the headstock...
      I'm sure if a defect was encountered, a replacement or return could easily be arranged, like every other guitar manufacturer would offer.

    Floyd Rose is made for 9/42. Put those 9s on Jimmy! remove that cover and Lose It like all proper Floyd owners should do. Once you install those 9's and stretch stretch stretch them you'll be fine. I hope you don't Remove All strings at the same Time. That was my first lesson with the Floyd. One At A Time, starting with the big E. I'm no Floyd expert, but gigged with that or a Kahler for 40 years. I rarely used the whammy, but played hard with lots of bending. Guitars stayed In Tune, Set after Set. I would Never gig without one. Good Luck!

      I ❤ the simplicity. Everybody is influenced by everyone however if u come up w one of the greatest guitar sounds thru an EVH amp then I can see why ppl gravitate twd it, especially if they are not spectacular players and wanna maybe sound better than they can play lol but I prefer a Marshall and the tone is in your fingers! The Firefly Floyds are basically junk.....soft metal and loose specs.
    Lots of negative reviews to be had...
    If you want a good value guitar with a trem, buy an IYV, yes they will need a set up but...they come with a real FR Special or Wilkinson V50II depending on model.....both hold tune very well.....

    That’s the risk you take when buying a cheap guitar with a cheap rip off of a Floyd rose tremolo system is Pok metal with poor inserts and not of the German caliber. Besides that Guitar is very ugly. It’s a Shred guitar and you’re playing shuffle too funny

    Hi Jimmy. I think they should put a Floyd Rose in a Frankenstein movie, to scare everyone! (🥲) "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder", and for most beholders, the more points there are on a guitar, the more beautiful it is! (🥲) Maybe soon they will make guitars with head(stock)s at right angles to the neck, then they could be used as carrying handles! (🥲) (One more thing. I claim I can "relic" any guitar in 5 minutes! (🥲))
