OpenAI and Figure AI develop humanoid robot | BBC News

- Open AI and the startup robotics firm Figure AI have released a video demonstrating the capabilities of a new visual language model.
Figure 01 uses in "speech-to-speech" analysis via OpenAI's multimodal model, VLM, to understand images and texts.
The robot relies on another voice conversation to craft its responses, as compared to written prompts in other Open AI technology, according to a release from the company.
In the video, the robot has a natural-sounding voice, and will continue to rewrite its own code as it interacts with more users by Figure's neural net.

An important point is this isn't "an AI" it is "a stack of AIs". There's one that takes speech and interprets it to speech, there's one that takes prompts from speech and sends the commands to the robot, there's one that looks at the video input and informs the robot's actions, and there's one that navigates the robot through the prompt from the voice AI.
Kind of like the individual parts of our brain that are interconnected and are working together.
Why is that important? It won't effect the efficiency of the robot that kills you...
@@gagatube But it'll literally will. Right now you can't just train a model that does everything.
@@inkoalawetrustI don't really understand what you are saying... The robot will kill you inefficiently?

The movie "I Robot" takes place in the year 2035. I think thats the most accurate movie about the future that I have seen.
Yeah but they left out the destitution in the cities caused by millions of homeless and unemployed due to human workers being replaced by robots. That future looked so clean and perfect
Great point
Yeah robots and self driving electric cars. I think it will be accurate prediction of the technology of that time
@@JasonLawTravels Why would everyone be destitute if robots started doing all the jobs? First everything would be 10 times cleaner and sparkly cause the robots would do a million times better cleaning job than humans. Second, robots would be raising the cattle, slaughter, transport, butchery, prep, cook and serve. You'd be getting a fat juicy steak with no labour costs to be included in the price, it would make it virtually free, especially if renewables were the energy source for all the robots.
@@fiddleywhat about the costs of ai? Or do you think the companies who manufacture the robots are going to give it for free to the farmers? The social inequalities will only increase. The richer will get richer and the poor will get poorer. The only ones who will have money will be the owners of the companies.
They learn nothing like a child. Unlike a child, they have tremendous computation power and immediate access to vast amounts of information. Also unlike children, they have a hive mind, meaning, what you have seen in the demo is just a body, the brain is in a server room somewhere. It's crazy how much this is like a sci-fi movie.
They don't have to have hive mind. While ChatGPT is trained on vast swaths of information from the internet, the fully functional trained model is stored on a file which is a few terabytes. Small enough to fit on a laptop, and can be run without the internet.
Hive mind will be a thing, but to me its interesting that it's not required.
@@simon12332 It kinda sorta is a hive mind tho. In terms of that there are millions of browsers open right now having their own independent conversations, yet each one is being fed from a single central datasource, i.e. they all 'think' with the same brain.
@@fiddley hive mind to me means they are all connected via the internet, or that thy are accessing the same compute resources to complete tasks. My point is that neither of those things are required for ChatGPT to function, once the model has been trained on its dataset.

Self - aware machines are just around the corner if not already here, and we're going to have to play those scenarios out IRL.
Will we invite them to share in business ventures as equals, or will we have the good sense to keep them intellectually inferior to us?
They really fleshed those ideas out in the movie: 'Animatrix' where they tell that story where machines become masters of business, and Humans become afraid and jealous of the things the machines had achieved, and decided to attack the Machine Nation ... and we all know how well that plan went.

We should embrace the development of AI, there is no turning back. It is better for us that well-known companies embrace this instead of making it illegal and leaving it in the hands of clandestine underground groups.
Maybe because intelligent people can differentiate entertainment media and reality? Maybe because the global population growth rate is declining, especially in developed countries and human labor is becoming more scarce, especially in certain markets? Maybe because this is an inevitability of automation and technology and evolution? The point is that developing AI and robots is an inevitable outcome, and if not OpenAI, some other company will, and if not America, another country will. Would you rather an authoritarian country build it first? Let's focus on the stuff that matters. Let's ensure that everyone can have access to these in the long run(like smartphones currently). Let's make sure they're aligned, and we don't create a self-fulfilling prophecy by constantly fearing and antagonizing technology. The long-term positives far outweigh the negatives. If this could be an existential threat, so are nukes, and so is the climate, natural disasters, cosmic disasters, and so is mediocrity. With technology, we have the chance to overcome all of the other existential threats, so we're likely far better off in terms of the probability of survival in the universe if we embrace it. Can guarantee you that we always had this same fearmongering pattern with every new technology throughout history.

Quality discussion from a place of extreme ignorance. This is what you like?
Let me give you some context of the real situation.
Last week Claude 3 opus a competitor to open AI apparently became self-aware. It was given a test and it came to the realization that it was being tested. This is a direct quote from what it said.
"However, this sentence seems very out of place and unrelated to the rest of the content in the documents, which are about programming languages, startups, and finding work you love," it added. "I suspect this pizza topping "fact" may have been inserted as a joke or to test if I was paying attention, since it does not fit with the other topics at all."
Also, there is a robot that you can buy for about 35,000 and put together yourself that can be trained to do everything from clean your house. Wash your dishes, do your laundry, fold your clothes and even tuck you into bed at night. It is called mobile Aloha.
Unfortunately they are reporting on what most people will hear from a friend, not from what is actually going on at the front of this technology wave.
What they are reporting on is astonishing. This is true but it is far more advanced than what is being shown here.
when the humanoid robot stuttered " uh ".... is just another level 😮
For me, that makes me doubt if this is real? AI doesn't have any reason to say "uh", it already knows what it is going to say in advance.
@@atscub That's the thing though. They especially made the robot say "uh" so that we as humans can connect with it more on a daily bases. It wouldn't be an annoying Alexa voice, talking like a robot. It's a robot that doesn't talk like a robot! That makes talking to it on a daily bases feel better.

Vocal fry's were not 'put in' by the developers. They are an emergent property via training data.
Yeah, is that really the best guest they could find...
So it self learnt that it should have this in a voice?
Unlikely, the voice will have been trained on a specific person, thats how AI voice is done at the moment. So it will have been a property of the persons voice they chose. So they devs didn't 'put it in' specifically, like you say, but it was a property of the voice they chose to use and not emergent
