I am a data hoarder out of necessity, in my late teens my father refused to get internet or a phone line when he bought his house (he also refused remotely piped heat at the same time, even if they dug both fiber and heat pipes to like inches of the house. He said something about the prize but he also didn't trust the county to not fuck it up and flood our basement which is fair. It actually happened to some people afterwards, but it was not too common but why risk it). Nowadays there is a lot of stuff that I have on CDs, DVDs, Discettes and hard drives that actually doesn't exist on the internet anymore. I should definitely go through it some day and archive it on the internet. But I literally can't right now, I need to either have adapters or buy an old computer. I hate that I need a dongle just to connect a USB mouse.. 🙄
Mate, you need to feel with those ASAP. So many mediums degrade over time and you'd not forgive yourself if it was all lost when you got around to it. Not telling you anything you don't already know of course.
As a Canadian I just really want to appreciate you saying zed when referring to South Africa. It shows a level of consideration for the rest of the world that we have learned not to expect from most US Americans
What does Zed have to do with South Africa? Google is only showing South Africans say Zed instead of Zee when pronouncing Z. I am sure you aren't talking about that.
Consideration? What? It's just a different way of pronouncing something. Is it inconsiderate if a British person "wa'ah" instead of "wah-tur" when speaking to an American? What are you talking about?
And don't forget about the backups... They need to be even larger than the main pool if you want some practical use out of them. first world problems :)
Let me just say I'm really jealous, I'm a data horder I have 19TBs of data spread over several drives of different brands, SanDisk, Samsung, Lexar, Western Digital, Toshiba, then different types HDD, M.2 SSD, portable drives, micro SD cards, thumb drives, and converted internal to external. I'm working on building a home server. Just a small rack in my media closet (5'6"X7'11") with climate control, it's the back of my entertainment center.
hah nice, looking forward to this because i've recently built a cheap nas with "second hand" hard drives (some have bad sectors and i've put them in a mirror array) using Truenas and even if the internet says its "noob friendly", it took me sometime to set it up and i still have many questions on specific stuff. PC building tutorials are always nice because not everyone has experience but NAS stuff (or storage server) is something else, i thought it would have been easier !

96 TB?! That’s like one CoD install, One indie game, One modded fallout 4 install that you swear you’ll get back to, and one new Vegas install with 200+ mods and play throughs you keep adding to

No, not really. He's not outsourcing it to some randos from Fiverr. They're his friends and former employees from when UFD Tech was based out of there. I doubt he pays them peanuts.
The only slight issue here will be that transatlantic downloads will probably be slower for the SA team (slower than downloading from their local Google servers)

Somewhere LTT is looking confused and wondering who is building a NAS without them
They're sitting over there like 48 effective TB? of what RAM? Rookie numbers
LTT collaboration was the first thing I thought of as well 😅
They can shush 🤫
Let a real man build a NAS

😂😂😂😂
"Ark Survival Has Entered The Chat"
Genshin Impact has entered the chat
GTA 6, 235 TB of pure miracle masterpiece.
It's worth every byte.
