- How to find the best gold deposits!
This video is part of a video series made for a high school gold mining and mineral prospecting course. I went out to a couple rivers to show where gold typically deposits on a river. Showing the inside of curves, behind rocks, high bank sluffs, high bank deposits, and pay streaks.

I live in an old gold town in Victoria, Australia. Bought a Mining Right, grabbed a pan kit, watched this video today and went out to a local creek.
Inside edge, down in gravel, close to bedrock.
First time out picked up a few flakes. It was great fun. Thanks for your videos.
One of the best videos I've seen. Very well spoken without all the uhhhhs, and ummms... Lot of good information in a short amount of time. I didn't feel like I wasted my time watching like in alot of videos out there. I also give you an A for the video.
Gold Miner He is a high school teacher geology great teacher. A++
What a great teacher, our schools could use a lot more just like him.
Gold Miner I don’t see you making “uhh and umm-less” videos...
I've watched a fair amount of these "How to" videos on finding gold and I absolutely love this one. Your pleasant delivery is reminiscent of Bob Ross and very easy to understand. Your clear and visually descriptive camera work is awesome.
Thank you for sharing this video with us. Keep up the good work!
Thanks!
Thank you Dan. You're a wonderful soul. Great teacher.
From Provo, UT. God bless.
This is the single most informative gold panning video I've found. Thanks!
I have been watching your videos for a month since I discovered your channel. Thank you for all the time and effort you put into these and the shared knowledge and experience! My family and I are going camping tomorrow to try our newly gained insights. You're our favorite!
I appreciate all these video's you have put up. It's a big help brushing up on the old hobby and clarifying suspicions I have had over the years.
One thing about your older videos they will always remain relevant for all time. Great information
Hey Dan thanks for all the nuggets of info. I was really excited to get started but I was discouraged cuz I had no idea where to look or how to pick a spot. Your videos have really encouraged me to stay encouraged and keep searching!
Hey buddy, just found this incredible video after watching you for several years now. I absolutely love this information. Thanks once again for sharing!
Amen 🙏🙏🙏 just got my first ever gold pan 3 days ago and have been binging Dan Non-Stop.. can't wait to keep binging
Thanx so much for sharing. I'd love to see even more of your "Reading the River" video's!!!
Evan seemed so happy, what a beautiful soul.
I feel like I've watched your kids grow, as you've grown in popularity, you seriously inspire me to never leave my kids behind. Thank You
Of course not. If you leave the kids behind, who's gonna do the grunt work?
My man, wearing the Darth Vader shirt, while panning for the beautiful yellow. Darth Vader is my favorite. Him, and Boba Fett is a VERY close second. I have to say the The Empire, Galactic Empire, and the First Order have some AWESOME characters. Well, that being said, I have just started panning for gold here in Southern Az. I love being outdoors, and I heard that Az had quite a bit of gold sti out there. Your videos were some of the very first I watched. Then watched some more, from other channels. Well, I came back around to your videos while watching those. After watching several different channels, yours, BY FAR, were the most informative. The way you explain the workings of panning, the do's/don'ts, make it so easy to learn. There's still a pretty steep learning curve, learning from UA-cam videos. You learn from your mistakes, and push on. I find myself going back to your videos I've saved, and rewatching them to hone my skills. Thank you for your videos!! Since I've found some gold, not a lot, my wife, and son have joined me. It's now a family hobby. You honestly have a big part in that. I was getting frustrated until I came to your videos. You just have a way to simplify everything, and make it enjoyable. Again, thank you, and I look forward to more videos.
I'm digging these older episodes! Thank you Dan!!
Evan's smile at the start made my day!! great info. Thanks.
Thanks brother! Really thanks
Thanks to this guy I found 40 grams of gold inside river Tevere in Italy!
Ok, sounds nice , but how long did it take you
i just came from seeing your recent videos (2022) its so cool seeing the quality of your videos quality upgrade. thanks for the info.
Just thinking, what a great time to be alive when intellectual people such as yourself share their knowledge. UA-cam truly is a great learning resource. Thank you Dan, thank you youtube.
Thank you for being so straight forward . All these other guys explain the whole science of it and blah blah blah . But just knowing the basics straight forward and clear is 100% esier to remember and to go by . So thanks man . Hope everything is well with you and your family . Take care
Thank you I love that you always speak like a cool teacher ,the one that loves what he does as much as you do. I live in a spot of the last glacier and I'm curious about what I can find
this is one of my favorite videos from your channel , your instructions are clear and quite easy to comprehend . thanks again Dan .
Your videos are always worth watching. You have we earned my subscription. Thank you very much!
Thank you for this VID, i am new to gold hunting working with mostly home made eq, i have found some gold but i need to learn soooo much about where and how deep to look things like that ur vid cover where very good thanks again.
Man, I’ve never panned for gold, but listening to you, you’re so enticing I want to go panning for gold like NOW!!!
Give it a try, it is fun!
soo cool to see your video from 9 years ago!
I found this creek while on family holidays this year. I was up and at the creek at 5 am Saturday and Sunday to dig before my family got up. Your lucky to live so close to this!
I am pretty fortunate to live so close to it
Nice video Dan
You moved quickly through the subject matter and illustrated it well. I grade it an A.
Keith
Great video, thank you. These are exactly the kind of shallow streams and creeks that I want to prospect in.
Excellent tips. So enjoying these videos.💯
Thank you Dan for the lessons. This will surely help a lot.
Awesome video full of great info. Glad you have your helper along today. 🙂👍
I appreciate all the information you share with us rookies me and a friend of mine this fall or do some prospecting in the upstate of South Carolina there is gold here but there's not enough for Mass mining but as a hobby maybe maybe LOL
Really fine work, Dan! Would you talk a little about sand deposits. When you find them on benches just above a river what does that all mean, other than the water was traveling slow enough to help form them? Thanks.
I for one am extremely happy I came across this video! Very good info. Keep these kinds of videos coming man great work
Thanks!
Probably will not have time too answer me but... Why search behind the rock when the river is flowing the opposite way of the side we are digging on? I understand gold is heavier but that makes very little sense too me...
Evan with the Starwars shirt. 👍 May the force be with y'all.
Dang this video is old, but full of gold. Very well explained thank you.
Great video Dan!
Thankyou for the tips)))
🔥💯🔥
This is a great video Dan. Thanks for all of your very informative videos.
great video Dan! really appreciate these learning vids. can't wait to get back this fall and get some colours
Great informative videos, BUT no one that instructs the public about panning or dredging, ever brings up the matter of " sites that are CLAIMED"! Please advise people that are new to this venture, that they could be in violation of someone's claim and be subject to confiscation of gathered minerals(gold etc.) and even violence. Also large corporations seem to stake claims on many areas that aren't necessarily for gold but other minerals. Check you're states Bureau of Land Management for info on what areas are available for prospecting. I hope this helps. I'm not criticizing, I just hadn't heard this subject addressed. EUREKA!!!
He addressed in the last video. He's going to public creeks and rivers and is on public unclaimed land. This is part of a series.
@@PsychosisNOSlarge corporations are running the entire world. Doesn't surprise me. The greed is unfathomable.
You are bang on Dan.
Shhh don’t tell anyone. I made a lot of those holes.
My house is next to this creek
What about above a water fall. We have some private property in northern Maine and has a nice creek/ Brook running through it. It has a nice water fall about 20 ft wide with a 5-8ft drop. I never panned it before but will be going up in Oct.. Being Oct I can't really jump in and get under the falls but above the falls is nice bedrock with some very nice cracks, some over a foot deep. Also above the falls about 200 yards is and bunch of bends with one really sharp bend. Will that effect gold deposits above the falls and would be more concentrated at the bends? Would like to send some aerial pictures of it and see what you think.
For a waterfall I would recommend setting up a scaffold rig across the plunge-pool then suspend yourself by the feet right over the deepest part. Now with a brick tied around your neck for ballast with the aid of a pulley you should be able to dangle yourself in with little effort. For breathing you could set-up an air-bladder out of a football and some hose pipe, attach this between your thighs and you can operate this by squeezing your legs together whilst suspended for unlimited breathing. It's hard to explain I drew it on some towel but it got wet. Let me know how you get on and if you find any gold you can split it with me and your next of kin :v
Dan I like your videos. I believe you have a tremendous amount of knowledge about gold subject. Thanks so much for this video particularly. it is very good.
If any viewers in the upstate of North Carolina or South Carolina have any suggestions we are all welcome to them thank you
Thank you, This was very interesting and informative. Good stuff!
I do my panning and gold sniping on the Yuba River in Northern California. Similar conditions to your examples. Thanks for the helpful hints. Of course there's plenty of places where gold "should be". As they say, gold is where you find it.
Great video.!!!..Loads of exelent advise! Thankyou for all the videos Dan.
You're welcome
Thx for your information granpa Dan 🙏
Thank you this will help me a lot I made 2 pages of notes with pictures and a legend to study.
Great video. Looking to start looking this summer here on Vancouver island.
Richard Luxon me too. Have you started yet? In in the Cowichan area
have not started yet Khilpalus, also in the Cow Valley.
Thanks for the informative video!!
just rewatching this informational video, thanks again for sharing dan!
Thanks for rewatching!
Thank you very much for your video I can't wait to get back to the merced River midpines ca
Hi Dan i really enjoy watching your informative video's Thx
Found gold in amongst roots along an inside corner of a local creek. One of my best pans ever. Had approximately twenty descent sized flakes in one pan.
Sounds like you read the river perfectly!
A.u I like gold :) I'm bored waiting to head back to California watching you're old videos! Have a great day Dan
Thanks!
Really helpful video thanks!
Great video! Great filming and awesome information!
Thanks!
Them holes is a bona fife habitat for trout and such. Which is good eatin and a heck of a thrill to cetch
I live in Maine and it has been estimated that only 1% of the natural Gold hidden here has actually been found. I got a detector and a pan, and am patiently awaiting summertime! I dont care if I only find flakes.. enough of them is still free Money. Thank you sir!
Is there gold in every stream/creek/river?
Just what I was looking for. Very informative. Thank you!!
were you in Kelowna BC? I think that the creek right outside my house..
I was thinking the same, and I have only been once in Kelowna. Kelowna is famous for it’s nice girls with me! And the beaches
Well explained Dan, opens folks eyes....
Thanks!
Thanks for the training
Thanks Dan!
Hey?
We have a camper on a river and there's quite a few gravel bars but not a lot of big rocks. And most of the big rocks are submerged. Will those bars hold gold or should I just look on the down river side of the bigger rocks?
Thanks for sharing this video.
That river has moved a long ways. I would be digging up by the tree line and working my way in from there. Heavy stuff drops out first 🤠
I wonder if its worth trying any creek or river?
Why not. The blacker the dirt the better the dig
The inside curve is the opposite side of the river you’re standing on in the beginning of the video?
Thank you, really helpful
Thanks again.😊
hello i am from muskoka area and was wondering how would i go about finding places to go look for gold to pan and metal detect? i am new to panning and detecting and have no idea where to start
Another simple river system 'Reading'.
How about something exciting like a steeper river system, boulder strewn and with major side sluffing. Ya know, them rivers where the gravel bars disappear every winter and sometimes reform and sometimes not and the water pushes 15 ton boulders around every 10 years. Maybe throw in some nice / chert or other polished bedrock often found in the Cascades ect.
Great video! Happy digging!
Thanks!
Great video!!! Thank you ❤️🙏🏼✌️🌎
That helped a ton. Thanks sir!
Great video, thanks!!
Now will any creek have gold or just certain ones in certain locations?
Great meat and potatoes video and no nonsense! Liked and subscribed
For the first location, is that calm enough for gold to drop I’ve read it usually drops out in calm water. 1st spot goes calm to little rough?
What creeks were you in in Pennsylvania that you were describing as maybe having gold in them? Thank you
Great video with good information, and well explained.
I'd love to give that a try, but in my area I think gold would be rather scarce - southeast Missouri about 30 miles from Arkansas - and I'm too old and out of shape anyway. LOL
But I enjoy watching your videos, enjoy seeing others finding it.
Love this Creek! My dad lives near by. Kelowna, great town.
Some great gold in Kelowna
Learned a lot, thanks for a great video
great info on how to find gold :)
Do we need permits to pan along any stream?
Thank you brother! This was great info!
You are welcome
learning allot from you! keep up the great work !!!
Thanks!
hi there , we are looking at a venture , how do you determine what side of the river the undercut gold lies ?
This is my favorite.
I have a dried up mountain almost top creek on my property is there any chance of gold there and what equipment would I need?
When I hit clay should I keep digging or start moving?
probably one of the best videos for the for a new planner to watch. Where the heck was it when I started!!! Lol
thank you. I wish i had this class in high school. Did geology in college but this would've changed my career outlook. Would you say mining is a hobby or could "pan" out? (pun intended). I live in Northern California.
Thanks for the great field tips. What part of the to use on our next trip out
...we will put them to use on our next trip out. Doesn't everybody just love the unprompted auto spell correct feature.
Look at Evan on this one ! Awesome
