Read Dune for the first time this year. Took me most of February! Best wishes on what you choose to read, I hope you get some great stories. I'm currently at page 770 of the Count of Monte Cristo and still got some way to go. Enjoyable but I might be some time! Happy reading.
Matt, I love this video. It's compelling, concise, gets the the point, is very well thought-out, and persuasive. Really excellent, informative, and useful!!
I do feel a lot of epic stories can be told really well in a limited series format, with the right show runners. As you mentioned, there's so much to cut when making a 2-hour or even 3-hour film.
@@RedFuryBooks Indeed. And I really think GoT changed the landscape - now producers see money when they get pitched a long genre adaptation. It’s a good time for us SFF nerds. 🙂
Brilliant video! I need to hear your Dune movie 2 thoughts whenever you get to it! It totally surpassed my expectations 🤯, but it also made me want to reread Dune. ❤
My thoughts about the 2nd movie are… complicated. I’ve been trying to put them together into a script for a video, and I’m finding it very difficult, but I’m hoping to get it together soon.
Great reasons! I am sorely due a re-read. I read the original trilogy in a translation, then the first one in English... and I'm craving those special editions, tbh. Need to revisit it. It was the first SFF I ever read!
Yeah Livia, also a very early SF read for me. And if you mean the shiny orange/green hardback (and not the Folio Society editions), they’re very reasonably priced. 🙂
Although I appreciate the book for what it did for the science fiction and fantasy genre, I personally had to force myself to finish reading the book, there were very good parts (My favourite is the very unique death of one character) in the book and the atmosphere in the book totally makes you feel in the desert but I found Frank Herbert's writing style very difficult to get used to. I did finish the book eventually and was satisfied with it in the end but while reading the book I did not like it at all especially considering it was so highly regarded as the great father of science fiction. Thanks for the review!
Hunh, interesting. I quite enjoyed Herbert’s writing, but then I also read it (and books with similar prose style) when I was a teen, so I guess I grew up on it in a way.
Can you give an example of an adaptation that's better than the original book? I agree with you. Regardless of the movies the book should be read. Great video.
Thanks, Epic. 🙂 “Better” sounds objective, and is a pretty hard thing to judge, but I can certainly imagine an adaptation could be subjectively more *enjoyable* to me, though none come to mind right now. 😉
One that comes to mind is Watchmen in that the space squid from the comic did not age well and seems a little silly. The movie was mostly a grame by frame adaptation of the comic otherwise.
To me, while books were still infinitely better, the Harry Potter movies did a great job. I've also heard about Lord of the Rings being a spectacular adaptation, but I haven't gotten myself to watch / read that series yet. (I have the books though and I will begin shortly)
@@EricMcLuen Yeah, Watchmen was a very good adaptation, though as a design nerd, the genius of the frame composition does get lost, and I miss it. But considering what the two mediums are, they did a very good job on the screen.
These are excellent reasons for experiencing both Matt. Well done!

Thanks mate. I’ve got a nice edition of the Count, so it’s also on my TBR. 🙂 Glad you enjoyed Dune, it’s one of my all-time favourites.

Gee, thanks Brian. 🙂
I read Dune once and will probably never do so again, but I appreciate all your reasons here for loving it! Great video 🤩
Thanks Esmay. 🙂 Such a deep book with so much to think about. Very glad I read it again this month.
This is a fantastic concise video! I agree 100% to all points. I'd watch the 10-hour Dune too haha
We should start a petition and send it to Villeneuve. 😜

Read Dune, the book -- what a novel idea.😜
Great video, Matt! See you tomorrow!😀
I've seen all of 1 and half the second movie, and none of the show 😂 Haven't read it yet.
I love the movies, but also highly recommend reading it. Enjoy! 😊
Now I'm wondering what Dune would have been like if it had been written as a YA science-fantasy novel...
I’m not so familiar with YA, but I’m guessing something at least a bit like that probably exists? 🤔

@@Atrulion I’d agree. Both Harry & LotR were very good adaptations, though I wouldn’t necessarily call them more enjoyable, for me personally.
I enjoy your videos very much.
Thanks Nicole! 😀
Dune Messiah pitch next? 😏
Once I’ve re-read it (soon, ish), that might happen, Trevor. 😉
This book wasn’t for me…. Thank you for the review!! 😊
Yeah, not every book is for every reader. 🤷🏻♂️ Thanks for watching, Safina. 🙂
Nice! I love the book too. Also, it is very re-readable 😊
No need to watch the video, the book is always better! 😂😂😂
Yeah Mike, not an unpopular take. 😜
🪱
I didn't like the movie maybe the book will change my mind.
I enjoyed the movies, but love the book. Hope you do too. 🙂
