Gerald Tarrant's sword "souleater" from the coldfire trilogy should be on this list
To me is Nightblood from cosmere. Just because is a great sword and a fantastic character
Not sure if anyone will see this now that it’s been two years but excellent collection! My favorite editions are the 2020 Harper Collin’s Illustrated Editions Box Set (UK). Illustrated by Alan Lee. They are gorgeous and I’m in love with the covers!
At age Ten my grand-father have me the Golden Box Set of the LOTR Trilogy and The Hobbit, with a Compact OED in paperback to help with the vocabulary. From 1974 to today I still have them. Only the Hobbit had to be replaced.
Missed the Pub for obvious reasons. Happy holidays 🎄
You too, and best wishes to all 4 of you in 2025! 🙂
Coudl you add time stamps for the questions? :)
That’s pretty time consuming, so I’m afraid not. But if you watch the whole thing, you’ll hear all of them. 😉
I just unboxed my very first folio book and it was so exciting to me, I enjoyed watching you unbox these beauties too!
Yeah, I’ve got a few Folios, and it’s always super exciting opening them up! 😀
@@MattonBooks It really is!
Spoilers in my reply
Is it really just one POV ? Been a long time since I read this and I'm sure there are two characters speaking as one
Well, it’s one actually person, who sort of has another person inside of him. 😉
I just ordered my copy!! An early Christmas gift to myself 😊 Also- the illustration inside the book reminds me of the intro in the show The White Lotus! Genius ✨
It’s such a lovely “kind of” map! 😍 You’re in for a treat. It’s such a unique book in so many ways, I absolutely loved it. Hope you do too - come back and tell me what you thought! 😀
I read Lord of Light in June, and like any other Zelazny story I've read so far, it was highly original and fascinating, and I love the religious references. I quite enjoyed the story of the film that never got made. I'd say that is quite in keeping with some of the interestingly poetic weirdness that Zelazny crammed into his stories. One thing I particularly liked about this story is that, while set in the future, it could also be interpreted as being in a hypothetical past, as the events of the story, mythologised over time, could have sparked the kinds of religious notions we have today once the details were long forgotten; and it suggests, probably intentionally, a kind of cyclical world view. And yes, Star Wars and Dune are escapist space fantasies, not science fiction in the sense that many distinguish those terms. When I started reading science fiction, I quickly landed on 50's and 60's science fiction. That is where you find philosophical, literary science fiction, influenced by Modernist ideas, the actual technological space age and not just an imagined one, the intermingled hope and paranoia of the post-war era and the Cold War, and scientific advances that made people question and analyse things that many never thought to question before. And of course also the spiritual awakening that came from more people in the West realising there was a whole world of other ways to view existence besides their own. It was a proper paradigm shift where science fiction, once considered a harmless escapist pulp genre for the masses, became "literature" in even the most ardent pedant's definition of the word. Like you, I also Lord of Light over no more than three days, but it is relatively dense prose, and so I need to reread it some day, possibly a little more slowly.
Yup, I was blown away by the whole movie that never was story, when I started researching the book. Just had to include it. 😛
You dont look like u had 9 that “ long ago” looking like a good wine 😂❤ I love Tolkien and everything about middle earth Love your collection
Hah! Thanks, but trust me, I was 9 quite a while ago. 😆
So glad you included Stormbringer. I like that you call it the original bad, sentient sword because unless you go back to some obscure mythology, this was the first soul-sucking black blade and the fact that Elric needs the energy it provides - like a drug addict - fuels his love/hate relationship with the blade. Honorable mention to its brother-sword Mournblade which is an equally poetic name. For those of you not familiar with Elric and Michael Moorcock, it contains one of the most interesting multiverses with hero's in multiple books series existing as aspects of what he calls the Eternal Champion. The final words of the book Stormbringer and what they reveal is one of the most incredible and thoroughly satisfying endings of any book series and I would argue it is perhaps the single best paragraph in all of fantasy. Thanks for including a classic!
Elric is the basis for Bloodraven Gordon RR Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series. His look is likely the basis for the overall look of the Targaryens so I would highly check fantasy fans check out a classic if they haven't read it. I think they will find the concepts ahead of their time.
Yeah, I was a huge Elric & Eternal Champion fan in my teens. Many of the stories sadly don't really hold up that well to adult reading, but many are still awesome. And as you said, Elric's been seriously influential on other authors.
I'm just here to plug James Branch Cabell's Life of Manuel series. It's more of a semi-comedic satire than a straight forward fantasy, but certainly it influenced a lot of the fantasy that came after. Jack Vance is one that comes to mind. It's set in a fictional French province called Poictesme, and follows them from their founding in the middle ages under Dom Manuel up to the present day. His protagonists tend to be Vancian, with plenty of personality flaws and moral failings which, because comedy, don't often have the results you might expect. It's actually kind of refreshing to read.
Never heard of it! I'll put it on the list to give a look, thanks!
Long time lurker here. I always watch on replay and it's about time to let you know how enjoyable I find the pub conversations each week. Thank you!
Thanks Diane. 🙂👌🏻
And why don’t you speak up in the chat sometime? 😉
I only catch you on replay.
@dianneeagle4686 Ahhh, fair enough.
I had bought 'Jack of Shadows' in the early-mid 80's at some point, and I re-read it several times later. I could never understand why this 'Lord of Light' could ever be more interesting! I finally got it in the 2000's, and I really love it! I DO love the quote(?) that was said to be why Zelazny actually wrote this book! No spoilers, see, hands free!
It's so good! I’ll definitely be re-reading it soon.
Happy birthday! I know I already mentioned it on Discord, but… Thank you for inviting me to celebrate your. birthday and thank you for giving me the gift of time and space to support Max on your platform. My gratitude is endless. 🥹💜
Of course, Evie. We all love Max and hope he’s back home soon. ❤️
Happy Birthday Dude. Stay wealthy
Thanks mate. 🙂 I’d prefer healthy. 😉
A little late to the party, but I just finished the first book. I found certain parts a little difficult to read based on the writing style and sentence structure, but that usually went away once I got into the groove of it. I found it in a used book store and promptly bought the rest of them. I will say, the covers are what sold me on it. I love the covers on 70s and 80s sci-fi / fantasy novels.
The map in LOTR and The Silmarillion are not the same. The mountains to the right on the Silmarillion-map, are the coastline to the left on the LOTR-map. So Middel earth has changed drastically.
Thanks for being honest and forthcoming in your review. Refreshing. Keep at it Thank you.
Thanks, will do!
Who was the female author he mentioned that he loved? Not Anna Smith Spark, but another one?
Ann Leckie. She wrote a remarkable scifi series that begins with “Ancillary Justice”, and Adrian recently read her newest fantasy book, “The Raven Tower.” My copy is on the way. 😉
@ looks like mine is too. 😁
This was so fun. He’s on track to become one of my favorite authors.
You and me both. 🙂
This was fantastic. What a great bloke Adrian is. I love what he said about sci-fi and fantasy being a continuum as he clearly blurs the lines. Of course I immediately went and bought Guns of the Dawn so that should make Anitha happy. 😅
Glad you enjoyed it Kath. Anitha will be ecstatic. 😀
I am also someone who is INCREDIBLY scared of creepy crawlies and yet I adored his approach when they come in. also I really wish echoes of the fall got a lil more love just as it's such a different vibe that even if it's not his strongest, it's a great example of his range. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS. It was so fascinating. My tbr with his author love is certainly larger. thaaaanks *huff* :p so happy to see this man burst in popularity the last few years in the circles I've been around,
Glad you enjoyed it! 😀 Did you obey Anitha and buy Guns of the Dawn? 😜
Everybody, buy Guns of the dawn!!!! Thanks for this guys, hate that I missed the last few Pubs, hopefully I'm see you soon
😆
It was a toss-up between reading ‘City’ by Simak or ‘Children of Time’ by Tchaikovsky for my next read. Seeing this video pop up on my feed has made me decide on ‘Children of Time’. GREAT!
Always happy to encourage someone to read more Tchaikovsky. 😀
I’ve heard people compare Gene Wolfe to James Joyce and BotNSun to Ulysses or even Finnegan's Wake. Joyce was intentionally and sometimes obnoxiously esoteric and dense. That being the case, readers often believe that Joyce was fluent in 20 languages and had complete and practical understanding of all Earth's cultures and mythologies. The truth is, however, that he used to know plenty of academics and intellectuals from all realms of art, science, and philology. He'd have parties that he hardly attended since he was writing Finnegan's Wake in the other room. Periodically, he would emerge and ask his guests, “Who knows Cantonese? Who is familiar with Babylonian mythology? Where's my expert of Ancient Etruscan Snoods?” And then he would get back to writing. The end result was a vast piece-work quilt that - when viewed as a whole - might convince many that Joyce knew everything in the world. Which he didn’t. But I don’t think he was trying to fool anyone. This scatter-shot blast of language, mythology, and culture works perfectly for his themes surrounding the Fall of Man, the Tower of Babel, and humanity's desire to repair its fractured form. And same goes for Gene Wolfe. But better.
Cool video. Thanks for info on previous sentient swords in fantasy fiction. The protagonist in my story will face one in the next series. I was afraid it would be too cheesy. But now I know it can work. Thanks.🤔🤨😀
Glad I could help. 😉 Good luck with the book!
It took me some effort to get into the Silmarillion but goodness, was it worth it! I am 67 now and since about 10, I have reread Hobbit and LotR every 18 months since. It was a gift on my birthday, perhaps because I share a birthdate with JRRT When I got into the Silmarillion 10 years later, that joined them and I now read the Silmarillion, Hobbit and LotR every 18 months or so. In between I dip into the Histories... I have 6 or seven editions - I've lost count. The Folio Society edition is nice but the single volume 2991 edition with Alan Lee illustrations, which is the same as your anniversary edition" is my regular reading version. Yes, I know it's heavy but in my theatre armchair it can rest on the arm while I read. Some say the red version you have has inconsistent page colour? Some oages white and some yellow? If that matters. I have the 75th anniversary blue leather set coming next week... Nice to see your collection, thanks
I've been checking out that new blue leather set... don't tempt me! 😅
@@MattonBooks Well, not to tempt you, but it has arrived and has taken pride of place on my Tolkien shelves. I need to make room for some more Tolkien that should arrive in the next few days (blue slipcased Silmarillion, (quarterbound with eye cutout), purple quarterbound slipcased Nature of Midfle Earth, hardback Letters, Blue & Grey quarterbound slipcased Children of Hurin, and the 4-volume box of The History of Middle Earth); but the new set will keep its prominent place - very nice!
It didn't hit for me.
Yeah, it's very much a "not for everyone" kind of book.
I can’t believe that I just got this signature model for $50 used! I had a fifth generation paperwhite 1 and I wanted to upgrade to the seventh generation like you talked about here. I was hoping to spend $35 total but everyone was wanting close to $50 once I added shipping. Then I found this signature model for $50 including a case! The guy who sold it told me said that he got it as a gift and he was so happy that someone would use it! He had no idea that they’re selling so quickly on Facebook marketplace. I got his from OfferUp. Then I sold my fifth generation for $35 instantly on Facebook marketplace! What a deal! I’m trying to tell a friend that she should get a seventh generation like you talked about here. 😊 thanks for the video. It just increases my happiness. 😂
Congrats on the excellent find!
Thank you for having me. I had a blast.
Great to have you Kathi, and you're welcome back any time!
Thank you so much Matt! It is my first time reading the lotr. And i think your little thoughts made this reading experience even better :)
Excellent, glad to hear it! 😀
It is so hard to find good malazan breakdowns. Thank you. My feed only pulls up main booktubers giving general reviews. A couple summaries. Not a lot of deep dives, which considering the series’ reputation… I find a bit baffling. Subscribing so I don’t lose track of you. Hope there are more. Im halfway through (audiobook is a poor entry medium btw) but I’m finally starting to keep up
Thanks Michael. I've been very slack about 'producing' videos for a while, but we do talk Malazan sometimes in the Sunday Pub, my weekly livestream.
I loved this book read 3 times over the years. I’m a woman loved the story. My other book is Hill House by Shirley Jackson. ❤scary scary
Such a good book. Meant to reread it for October, but didn’t manage to get to it. 😬
Pooh with the h at the end means something of no substance. Poo without the at he end means faeces. Epic pooh would mean epic but devoid of substance or meaning, which is in line with the content of the essay.
Thank you all. Engaging in conversations like this has truly made my first experience reading Wolfe far more enriching and expansive
Glad to hear it! 😀
Wonderful book ❤
Based on what the word “cacogen” actually means, I think the cacogens started as human and deteriorated into something else over the course of millennia.
Is there one you’d recommend to someone who’s buying their own copies for the first time?
Depends. Do you want a sexy special edition, hardback, paperback?
@@MattonBooksI feel torn on whether to get the Harper Collins special edition or the Tolkien covers.
Christ this guy smacks his lips more than the big bad wolf
Name checks out. And yes, I am the King of Weird Mouth Noises.
I have misophonia so as much as I wanted to hear what you had to say, I had to stop. But apparently there is a AI service that gets rid of such sounds
what is your opinion on Fingerprint! Publishing ( particularly they hardcover deluxe editions) ?
I’ve honestly never heard of them. Is their stuff good?
Amazing haul! I now have 7 books from Folio and have been impressed by all of them!
Folio are dependably not too crazily priced, and beautiful. 😍
One of my favourite books!!! Favorite if you live in Canada like I do.
I don’t, I’m in Berlin, but I also love these books. 🙂
Very good review
Glad you enjoyed it. 🙂
I have the signature. Only complaint was that it doesn't do color. I have illustrated books that only appear in b/w. I do have the kindle app on my phone to view in color, but defeats the purpose of having a standalone reader. Yes, I could've gotten the fire, but that's a tablet...and I already have one. Im just waiting for a color version of this.
And now there’s a colour Kindle…
Sorrow, from Memory, Sorrow, & Thorn. Blended by unholy means, made of Witchwood (deadly to Men) & Iron (stereotypically poisonous to Faeries). Imbued w/ an array of mystical capabilities. It has a palpably malevolent aura
Just reading MS&T now, so maybe I’d make a different video today. 🙂
More live videos would be awesome
There is a great rendition of "The Sword of Welleran" Lord Dunsany on youtube if you like listening rather than reading. This isn't a typical reading in that it has sound effects etc in the background. It is on the AGM Storytime youtube channel.
