You’ve made the best step - moving to someone who does complex temporary engineering. Someone who knows who to call to find all the rental engineering parts that can make it happen.
I'm surprised that Colin Furze hasn't already taken on this challenge, with a stack of old pallets and a jet-powered mobility scooter...with razor-edged wings for aero.
@geirmyrvagnes8718 I've seen it in a big ball... wall riding in a big loop... arguable cooler. Yes, that's centrifugal force though. Still I image with proper aero upside-down is possible as well.
We have high expectations of this project as enthusiasts, we would very much like to know more soon, it would be great if this tunnel is used more than once, continue with this project that can take motorsport to a higher level in engineering. 🎉💪
Have you considered any crowd funding options? It would still be a big ask for sure and I'm guessing £3 million would need to be footed in large part by corporate partners. But personally, I'd be happy to donate some money to help get this to fruition, and I'm sure a lot of viewers feel the same.
@dubby_ow Kickstarter (and probably other crowd funding hosts) don't take supporters' money until the pledges reach the target total, so the only way supporters will feel let down or scammed is if the target is set too low to actually fund the project.
They probably have that mapped out. They've done giveaways before and know how many ppl willingly enter. Based on that, they would budget accordingly and still need a sponsor
You've obviously never seen the guys that build cars for land speed record attempts then lol. For the longest time it was often just 5 guys in a shed building an insane rocket propelled death box. You'd be surprised what a small team can accomplish
This gave me a flashback to when I was a teenager and my friend who loves cars explained "downforce" to me. The first thing I thought was "if a spoiler can keep the car pressed against the ground, could you get momentum and then drive straight up a wall?" I've never really stopped thinking about that.
Weird. Just last night I thought about this project and wondered if something catastrophic happened and that’s why there’s been no more posts. Glad to hear you’re still going on with it 😊
Probably using second hand materials, rented equipment, and a lot of resealable material after the feat is done, a civic engineer company on the contrary would want to use very specific equipment or materials of the highest grade that would end discarded after the fact.
Netflix? Amazon? A series would be more lucrative than a livestream I suspect. Red Bull take risks - perhaps more willing than other potential sponsors.
I am so glad you have continued this project! Good job finding someone to innovate and lower the cost. It will be so cool to see you succeed. And I agree, a great project to inspire the next generation of engineers!
I had a feeling that this was the where the project was after hearing nothing about it for a few months. It can't feel good when something you're passionate about stalls like this, but if your goal is really to inspire people to take up engineering challenges, you're going about it the right way. Engineering is about solving problems within the constraints you're faced with. You've found your cost constraint and now you're re-evaluating and approaching from another angle in response to that: that's core engineering activity.
car companies should be all over this like what would it be like to have your name on the car that had driven upside down for the 1st time ever lol and were is red bull this has there name all over it
mercedes did it in CGI for advertisement already. Since the difficulty is in finding a track, and the engineering is rather simple, actually doing it doesnt fit the image german car companies are going for.
This is something a place like Dubai or Abu Dhabi will sponsor just because they can, so maybe approaching their tourism arm instead of a corporate sponsor. They'll do it for the clout, and you will get the job done.
Because it gives off major scam vibes. Off-course t's possible to drive a car upside down, but realizing a project like this takes a lot of money, and 3 million seems low
I'm not so sure it's a scam, but I can't help but feel it's a total waste of time and effort and I imagine that is why sponsors etc aren't particularly forthcoming with a huge amount of money. The car will be upside down for a few seconds, and it's started from being an F1 car, to now just being a Formula car. Considering Driver61 made redundancies and continues to pursue this is in my view just wrong. Could these people have kept their jobs if this wasn't a thing? Certainly can't have helped. Frankly, 3m could be better spent and I'm sure sponsors etc feel the same.
@@ekids.bassment I don't believe the 3 mil figure for one second. Who's going to insure this and risk their life driving it for a silly youtube stunt (no offence). It's already so far from being a real tunnel and a real F1 car that I don't see the appeal - though let them try and raise the money from people who want to see a slightly bigger hotwheels move.
Is there a reason why a miniature version can't be made? What's to stop the group from modifying one of the 1:12 RC Cars, and sticking it on a much smaller tunnel in the shape of a torus? That's the costs right down to the floor, no safety issues, and a proof of concept that can be tested over and over again to prove it works to investors.
@@chrisf8833I can't think of the changes the smaller scale give to aerodynamics. A smaller sponge still soaks up water. Any issues with smaller scale far outweigh a £14 Million budget.
Aerodynamics definitely changes with scale, but actually I think it works in favour of the miniature. The smaller you are, the thicker the air seems. I'm guessing the reason they wouldn't go with a miniature is because it'd be too big a compromise to the point of the stunt. They really, really want to use a real car with a real driver in it.
The bigger factor would be weight, it doesn't scale linearly with size, you could get a miniature version to stick to the top of a tunnel by just having very sticky tyres, you don't need to overcome a whole lot of weight. As for aerodynamics, you'd have to redo all the calculations, which would make a comparison between the 2 no more effective than cfd analysis of the full size stunt
@@ultimateracer_ Has no one ever built a small working model of a racing car ever? This is where my mind is stumped, there would have to be some giant problem I'm not thinking of that stops it dead or we'd already have it made. Assume they pick the 1:12 MCL36 RC Car. That full sized car is 795KG without Fuel. Model: 47cm L x 17cm W x 10 cm H Car (SF-75): 563cm L x 200cm W x 95cm H Scale: 11.97 x 11.76 x 9.5 = 1338.79x less heavy, or 0.593 KG I wonder if it could be done. The RC car comes in at 1.1KG and that's without the use of carbon fibre parts and with paint.
I can't wait to watch this with my two young sons, my eldest already wants to go into engineering / construction and I can't wait to keep inspiring that journey, projects like this really peek his interest.
You could go to a wind-tunnel, put the car in a big tube which can be rotated. You can even drive the car a bit back and forth while at speed and inverted. I agree it's a bit less dynamic, but it would prove the point.
Unless you have the ground moving the same speed as the air you don’t actually have a complete simulation of the real world so they’d have to have a tube that’s also a a treadmill that can rotate at the speeds they need to travel at and also have it fit in a wind tunnel. I’m pretty sure you’d be looking at over $3 mil after building that and paying off an aircraft manufacturer to let you possibly damage a $10’s of millions wind tunnel
Appreciate the update, thanks man. Really looking forward to this one playing out, there's gotta be someone out there with the funds. Doesn't even have to be a company, sure there are some well off folks out there who could, just for the sake of making it happen. Fingers crossed for you, all the best going forward. Be safe, cheers.
You need to design the tunnel to use parts that either sourced from existing structures and/or can be used afterwords as standard parts - For example the Bailey bridge (or modern equivlent - or tower crane parts or even slotted angle iron (used for building industrial shelving) for the lighter parts - minimise the wasted effort and materials by useing parts that have other uses afterwords :)
Might I suggest to build the tunnel in India, Maybe with Redbull India or monster India. the cost of building it could be halved from 3 mil. if the tunnel is to be dismantled down after the stunt, the contractor might even pay you back good money for the materials recovered.
Cost of construction increases with a guarantee for quality. If built in India, the workers should still be paid western salaries to guarantee attention to detail. Would hate for this to fail because one worker said fuck it and used a nail that was already bent or not exactly what is needed.
Theory and practice are sometimes completely different things. One small mistake and a car crashes down with risk that the driver will be injured or worse. Like Yoda said, "there is no try" .. it all has to go right on the first take, that's a huge risk. Saying "it costs 14 million but we try to do it five times cheaper" doesn't boast confidence either.
I agree that I don't want to imagine how driving upside down is safe enough for any driver to risk their life. I can't believe they will even be able to insure it.
If elon musks engineers can figure out how to catch a rocket in robot arms I think it's not a reach to say you can probably simulate a problem like this pretty effectively lol
For the people saying "eww, electric", YOU ARE WINDOW LICKERS. Explain how is a combustion emgine gonna work upside down?? Fookin Einsteins over here 🗿🗿
Good luck to you guys I have no doubt this will become a reality one day. I've seen all of your videos of this project, and I won't be surprised if this happens one day.
Standalone structure can sometimes be more expensive than banking against an existing wall (more challenges though) Movies industries always build weird stuff like the 'corkscrew spin bridge 007' (man with golden gun).
IIRC the red bull stunts to land an airplane in the Burj helicopter port, and flying a plane through a tunnel both cost more than $3,000,000. Also, perhaps a real tunnel being constructed and just prior to opening could be used with a simple adapter at start and end.
People don’t quite understand how inspiring this could be!! To start a spark that will some day would lead to this being a regular occurrence in racing in the future 🤯🤯🤯🤯
Good luck with this. Surely Netflix would be interested in something like this? As someone else has said, it could be a documentary as well as a livestream. Can’t wait to see it happen!
Thank you for the update, I think we knew this wasnt a quick thing, it just would of been nice to have a few more updates, if only little ones. If I could I would support you but im in a hole myself at the moment
I, like many many others who have watched this idea grow reallyt do want to see this. One way of being to pull more sponsors is by having more exposure. can;t help but think that a dedicated, more indepth series of videos more frequently can be leveraged to potential sponsors to give them confidence in how much ad revenue through amount of eyes would be watching the event.
Structural engineer here, I'm dying to see the new design concept! Please make another video showing the new tunnel design and how that shaved so much money off! I'm going to guess its utilizing something already existing. This is exactly the kind of thing that makes a good engineer. Not just solving the problem safely but doing it in a way that minimizes cost and complexity.
if this went ahead and there was a cool live streamed event for it, it would be a monumental achievement. from all the years of claiming it was possible...in theory, to make it happen for real would be amazing.
Oh nice! I hadn't heard from this for ages so assumed it was a fail and you gave up on it. Can't wait to see the footage.... If you get the funding... Good luck!!!
My partner made a great observation - it sounds like there is a confidence gap between you and potential sponsors. Perhaps you need an intermediate step to get sponsors as confident as you are that this can work. A 1/3rd scale model using the same design & plan, but remotely controlled could be affordable & generate a lot of excitement and financial interest in the project.
Surely, if there's too much curve in the tunnel, the car won't be able to get a good suction to it. You need to have it a lot flatter for good suction. Just my thought..
I would say, if you ask Nevada to rent some of their empty land and find a contractor to take and make centrifugal cement pipe, 20 foot in diameter. you could take and lay it out pretty quick.
I wonder if there has been consideration to placing the car on the ceiling and then catching it rather than driving up the wall. Essentially my thought would be to have the car already inverted on top of some high speed truck that is able to lift the car to the roof of an existing tunnel at the required speed (yes there would be issues with roof mounted infrastructure) and then once there the lift falls away and air bags inflate so that the driver is able to do their 5 seconds of driving and then land safely back onto the same truck. The idea here is to skip the issues of sourcing a location and building a tunnel at all. If you're able to use an existing tunnel or hijack one currently in the build phase before the roof mounted infrastructure is installed you might be able to save a large chunk of cash. 🤷♂
Everyone's saying Red Bull, but you should get Hot Wheels in on this.
Por que no los dos?

Wow! I'm really impressed by the honesty and openness. I love it. If there's any crowdfunding involved, I'm in. Thank you for doing this!
This'll make monaco more interesting...the tunnels roof 👍🏻
Really interesting when drivers have to lift for a yellow or red flag.
you seen all the pillars in that tunnel. Ive been there with the WRC marshalling and there is mo chance!!!
It's a joke........
I was hoping for a Colin Furze partnership!
Me too. And I'm sure he could find some use for the box steel after, haha!
@ indeed plus I’m sure he could use it after with a combination of fireworks for a subscriber milestone!
In his backyard!
I'm surprised that Colin Furze hasn't already taken on this challenge, with a stack of old pallets and a jet-powered mobility scooter...with razor-edged wings for aero.
Max Verstappen likes cars
I think he works for a beverage company which likes stunts.
I like cars. Bikes are better though.
Using 5 wheels to go down the road when you only need 2 is just wasteful... 😂
@@geirmyrvagnes8718 used to… the owner that likes stunt is not there anymore.
Not sure about the new owner.
@@gasracing5000 But can you bike upside down in a tunnel?
@geirmyrvagnes8718
I've seen it in a big ball... wall riding in a big loop... arguable cooler.
🎉💪
So pleased you have released this update! Quite correct to keep everyone up to date!!
Need to try and get Redbull in with this I reckon, they're always blowing cash doing crazy projects like this.
Not anymore without Mateschitz
Have you considered any crowd funding options? It would still be a big ask for sure and I'm guessing £3 million would need to be footed in large part by corporate partners. But personally, I'd be happy to donate some money to help get this to fruition, and I'm sure a lot of viewers feel the same.
this is too risky, if they don't get enough, then money cannot be really used so fans would feel scammed and this could lead to a massive drama..
@dubby_ow good point, I didn't consider that.
@@dubby_owmost crowdfunding platforms can refund donations back.
When it comes to driving a car upside down in a tunnel I don't think 5 guys in a shed is what I'd want to hear as the driver.
Oceangate has left the chat.
You've obviously never seen the guys that build cars for land speed record attempts then lol. For the longest time it was often just 5 guys in a shed building an insane rocket propelled death box. You'd be surprised what a small team can accomplish
@ it was a joke, relax.
Glad to hear you’re still going on with it 😊
From 14m to 3m... Sounds like a come up scheme to me
Probably using second hand materials, rented equipment, and a lot of resealable material after the feat is done, a civic engineer company on the contrary would want to use very specific equipment or materials of the highest grade that would end discarded after the fact.
Netflix? Amazon? A series would be more lucrative than a livestream I suspect. Red Bull take risks - perhaps more willing than other potential sponsors.
It'd be easier with magnet track.
Oh wait, this isn't Trackmania.
Rocket boosters
@0:13 james reference?
Let me bring you up to speed?
car companies should be all over this like what would it be like to have your name on the car that had driven upside down for the 1st time ever lol and were is red bull this has there name all over it
mercedes did it in CGI for advertisement already.
Been waiting for an update! Appreciate all the work being done to try and make this a reality.
I hope to see it happen one day… I’m sure we all do
Great update. many thanks for keeping us in the know
nitro circus might help out, also dont forget about bumps, bumps will throw a car.
Give it 3 weeks and every comment on your videos will be calling this project a scam again 😂
Probably could but the aerodynamics, speed and weight might not be a capable, good comparison at a small scale.
Model: 47cm L x 17cm W x 10 cm H
Car (SF-75): 563cm L x 200cm W x 95cm H
Scale: 11.97 x 11.76 x 9.5 = 1338.79x less heavy, or 0.593 KG
I wonder if it could be done. The RC car comes in at 1.1KG and that's without the use of carbon fibre parts and with paint.
Wow this is crazy, good luck on this project
I can't wait to watch this with my two young sons, my eldest already wants to go into engineering / construction and I can't wait to keep inspiring that journey, projects like this really peek his interest.
Yeah even £3m is stupid money. No one is going to pay that, not even Red Bull's extreme sport PR stunt team.
$3M is no where near enough money to build this tunnel.
Just commenting for the algorithm
Money a problem? This totally sounds like a Red Bull event in the making.
Might I suggest to build the tunnel in India, Maybe with Redbull India or monster India. the cost of building it could be halved from 3 mil. if the tunnel is to be dismantled down after the stunt, the contractor might even pay you back good money for the materials recovered.
Exactly, build the project in a country with a lower cost base.
Cost of construction increases with a guarantee for quality. If built in India, the workers should still be paid western salaries to guarantee attention to detail. Would hate for this to fail because one worker said fuck it and used a nail that was already bent or not exactly what is needed.
And here I was thinking that we were never gonna get an update and that it was cancelled… good news that it’s still happening!
Keep going mate, we are behind ya. Love your work.
Great to get an update. Best of luck. I really hope this happens.
@@Grammarlings-cf8yw right and I can't imagine trying to fly a plane for the first time was safe enough for any pilot to risk their life either
Ask red bull
No wings allowed 😊
They have probably been asked already
but if people keep saying this, they might finally become convicted that this really will be popular enough to give it a shot, @@ninefingerdeathgrip
They could do it and a pitstop upside down too 😂
For the people saying "eww, electric", YOU ARE WINDOW LICKERS. Explain how is a combustion emgine gonna work upside down?? Fookin Einsteins over here 🗿🗿
an ICE was a point of concern for me too. Except for airplane engines they are designed to run inverted.
It's called fuel injection
eww, electric
@@nelsonbergman7706 because of fuel injection
Electric makes more sense but it's perfectly feasible to build an ICE that runs safely when inverted.
Happy to hear from this Projekt
Indeed I was wondering what`s going on, thanks for the update. I really hope for your success.
Have been following along with this! It's a fascinating journey!
Good luck to you guys I have no doubt this will become a reality one day. I've seen all of your videos of this project, and I won't be surprised if this happens one day.
Standalone structure can sometimes be more expensive than banking against an existing wall (more challenges though)
Movies industries always build weird stuff like the 'corkscrew spin bridge 007' (man with golden gun).
Cherfull to hear this HOUGE project is still on march. Don't give up on your dreams. Cheers from Argentina
This is a super awesome project!! I will be watching!
Could design some merch if needed
Well done man!
I was waiting for you to say you had teamed up with Colin Furze
Maybe you're hitting brick wall after brick wall right now, but in the end I am sure you are smashing it one by one. Good luck and Godspeed on this
I, like many many others who have watched this idea grow reallyt do want to see this. One way of being to pull more sponsors is by having more exposure. can;t help but think that a dedicated, more indepth series of videos more frequently can be leveraged to potential sponsors to give them confidence in how much ad revenue through amount of eyes would be watching the event.
I hope you will bring The slowmo Guys to film the car when it's upside down !
I am here for it😊
This will be timeless!!
Love the transparancy, hope you get it funded.
if this went ahead and there was a cool live streamed event for it, it would be a monumental achievement. from all the years of claiming it was possible...in theory, to make it happen for real would be amazing.
5:36 I started to fell interest in f1 after I had a glimpse of the physics involve in it. So with this im sure you'll have success eith this
Glad to hear this is still in the works. Let's hope you can get this fully funded!
Actually, I HAVE been wondering what the status of this project was! Thanks for the update and good luck!
Oh nice! I hadn't heard from this for ages so assumed it was a fail and you gave up on it. Can't wait to see the footage.... If you get the funding...
Good luck!!!
This is crazy, keep going👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
not surprised this is taking such a long time, but i know you can do this man get that shit baby
Go small scale, 1:5 scale, driven FPV from a SIM Rig, great content and I’ll gladly help/drive 😃
They are modeling it accurately.
@MordecaiV didn't look like it by the graphics shown
I would say, if you ask Nevada to rent some of their empty land and find a contractor to take and make centrifugal cement pipe, 20 foot in diameter. you could take and lay it out pretty quick.
You need to do something patial, like drive sideways or do a quick loop, and use it to attract attention to fund the big thing
