Hey guys, thanks so much for making this video. I marched in the Cadets on 2000 and 2002. I am still in awe and appalled even 24 years later when people talk about the 2000 Cadets. It was definitely a highlight of my drum corps career.
About that wave... I am the guy waving. This was something that wasn't always in the show and if I remember correctly a judge made comment of our hands not doing anything while someone else played on our horn. So we were in rehearsal and we asked Marc Sylvester and he yelled back across the field "Just Waveeeeeee!!!" And that's how that happened.

Hi, I was a 2005 member. Yes we all did the drum talk, but you are correct that not everyone was speaking it into mics. I believe there was 5 mics, for each solo(or duet) to be projected. And then at the end when everyone did it together, those same 5 mics were used to pic up the group, but naturally at that point the 5 people holding the mics were heard more than the others bc there were with closer proximity. The people holding the mics did have to battle audition to be selected, so they did have to speak clean diddles. LOL 😆

Both my high school band director and percussion instructor marched Cadets in the 90s. Although they are largely responsible for my perspective on music, I’ll always remember the lessons they taught me off the field more. They encouraged us to support our peers, treat others with respect, and always give 100%. I’m certain those lessons were instilled during their time at Cadets and I’m thankful for their willingness to share them with me.
Thank you to Mr. Jahnke and Kmac for putting up with my shenanigans and investing in me! ❤️

The Cadets drum line has always had some beefy stuff under the McNutt years, but the 2016 feature was the first time I really got a sense of just how aggressive Colin could be with his writing, and he brought a lot of that aggression when he went to Boston. I love that feature so much.

It was the 10 year anniversary of the “West Side Story” show they played in 1984. Re: 1993 Cadets vs Star. From a total corps standpoint, the judges had the placement correct and the margin of 0.1 was as close as was possible at the time. If the margin could have been 0.01, that might have been more appropriate. The crowd wasn't ready for what Star was putting out there. If any year deserved a tie, it was 93.

FYI, they installed the tiebreaker in 2001 (ironically, there was a tie for 2nd which stood). They used "ordinals," meaning ranking all the judges' final numbers with the lower score winning. I don't remember when they changed the rule, but there is no longer a tiebreaker. Incidentally, in the 3 ties, all the semifinal winners would have won with the tiebreaker: '96 BD; '99 BD; '00 Cadets.

Hi, I marched in DCI in 04 with SW! I was there in Indy in 05 as well! My favorite Cadets show was probably that year and maybe "Angels and Demons". Anyways, you had mentioned the Indy show was called a 'championship' or 'finals'. In fact, it was called DCI Midwestern Championships. I think from the mid - 90s (maybe late 90s) until 2006 and was held at the last weekend of July. It was in 2006, that DCI, Indianapolis, and what would be Lucas Oil Stadium to come to a multi-yearly agreement to host DCI Finals there starting in 08. So, what happened was that DCI decided to change a few things - the DCI Midwestern Championships was moved to Atlanta and changed the name to the DCI Southeastern Championships. Then, in 2007, the transitioned the schedule a bit to make the SE Championships in Mid-July for that year and Indianapolis would still have a show day but not as big (meaning not all corps would be there) and it would just be called DCI Indianapolis. Then, the follow year would be the first Finals in the new Lucas Oil Stadium - though that didn't happen and it was moved to Bloomington IN at IU Stadium for 08. During that time, SE (Atlanta) would bump up to be the weekend before the weekend of DCI Classic @ Allentown...and Finals the following weekend in Indianapolis. This is just a small point-of-view, but I remember going to DCI MW/Indy from 03 to 07 and being in there as a performer in 04! Plus, so many other shows, finals and so on!

It was an honor to compete against them back then . In my opinion DCI is responsible for the demise of what was one of the greatest youth activities across North America. They have turned it into a marching band competition it's no longer a real drum and bugle Corps. As an amateur Cadets and overall drum corps historian who’s been out of the game for far too long, let me correct and add some things both factual and personal, in chronological order: I’m of the opinion that Star lost 1993, they had a few poor percussive impacts that cost them on music effect and left the door open. The drum sets were 1995, Bill Bachmann was quad captain that season. 2000 was the first show that I ever saw online; I can still play the entire drum feature on snare and quads at tempo, including the quad solo on stands (you need three sets for that). 2005 was in fact the only show to not only win every caption, but every sub caption (every single judge had them in first). As for the vocals, there were actually separate vocal parts. Not everyone had all the articulation, some had only accents or other articulations. And yes, I can still play most of that feature on quads and snare (and vocals), at tempo, even after over a decade out of the game. Just goes to show how influential an organization can be on one’s personal life. And yes, I can confirm, those were the best rim shots ever. With that said, the drum corps chapter of my life was almost all the way closed, and with this video, I’m out for good. No more drum corps for me. Lastly, and completely off topic: last night I was given the set list from the DMB show in Hannover. Maybe I’ll see y’all at a show soon. Peace. -Lamar

05 Cadets was not the first corps to win every caption -- that had been done several times. What they were was the first corps to win every SUBCAPTION, which is a bit different and very impressive.
I would love to hear the drum speak actually played. I also think it would've been cool if the drummers not drum speaking had been air drumming that last vocal phrase behind the rest of them.

This is even more impressive when you remember this was under the tic system.
05 Cadets were the only one to win every single subcap (and therefore, every caption).
Other examples (all after the change from the tic to the buildup scoring system):
86 BD (subcaps lost, 3rd GE vizh, 2nd field brass, 3rd ens perc, 2nd field vizh)
89 SCV (subcaps lost, 2nd GE brass, 2nd brass perf, 2nd vizh perf)
94 BD (subcaps lost, 3rd ens music, 2 perc perf. A note that guard finally got their own points, but they appear to be stand alone and do not contribute to the final poverall score)
95 Cavies (subcaps lost, 4th brass perf, 2nd vizh perf)
98 Cadets (subcaps lost, 2nd both ens music and vizh...yet the points still tied them with BD for 1st in that caption, 2nd brass perf, 3rd perc perf)

You never once mentioned, all the national championships that Garfield Cadets won prior to your arrival. You should do a little more research than know what you're talking about. John dowling, he is the person that developed back sticking and used it for the first time with drum quartet with the Air Force, drum and bugle Corps. Taking first place. May he rest in peace, and there were other great Roman structures Bobby Thompson, Eric Perillo, just to name a few. Garfield Cadets with generally in the top three best drum corps in the country, they won many many state championships both American Legion and VFW back when drum lines played real rudiments they weren't jugglers and they didn't play Rim shots all through the program. They were judged on exposure to, error, and execution . The drum lines today play nowhere near the complex difficult Parts as they did years ago they play very few rudiments today. The more concerned with visuals, head bobbing arms flaring all over the place. Real drunk whores marched in local parades at South Bay receives support from the community and then when they went to the Nationals they had 50 60,000 people attending not like DCI, barely hitting 20,000 it's not your fault you don't know the history of the activity you only know what you know from the day you got involved. Another major mistake DCI made they never encouraged kids to join a senior Corps after aging out senior course would better than Juniors at one time because all the experience came into a senior Corps. I was a member of the Long Island sun rises 1964 through 1968. It's unfortunate for the activity we didn't have all the technology to record, past history with the exception of Records. Local diners and soda shops had drum and bugle Corps recordings, you can put a nickel or a dime or whatever the price was and listen to your favorite drum and bugle Corps. I started to learn how to become a snare drummer when I was taught by the cadets from West Point I was a Cadet at Mount Saint Joseph Military Academy they would come over on weekends and teach us both drumming and bugling check into the history, of the activity, it won't hurt you it'll enhance your comments❤❤❤🎉

Tragic that a 40+ year old accusation can destroy an organization that I’m guessing none of the accused parties have anything to do with currently. Waiting four decades is inexcusable under any circumstances. Unless they have strong forensic evidence, both parties have a difficult task in presenting compelling evidence.
On another, far less serious note, I absolutely HATED the verbal drumming on mic. Some of the things pushed by The Cadets and more specifically, GH, really helped to ruin DCI for me and many others.

@@samsignorelli That’s a feel good response, but to what end? The defendant is dead so there’s no potential justice there. Even if he was alive, there is no way to offer a defense for a 42-year old alleged incident. The only ones hurt by this are current and future members, alums, and fans. This person has lived an entire lifetime and only now felt it was time to say something? At some point, you just have to understand that the opportunity is over. Lashing out now hurts only the innocent. And ironically destroyed the very entity she was trying to hold accountable, so they aren’t even going to be present to be the representative of long gone staff members. I do feel for anyone who was legitimately wronged, but seeking justice at a time when that is no longer remotely possible, while leaving a path of destruction along the way, is fruitless.

This was caused by rape culture. The people who committed these acts are the cause of this, NOT the victim. It sucks that this is how Cadets were brought down, but too many people in so many different organizations in our society have gotten away with things like this for far too long.

    • @TommyDoog
      @TommyDoog 2 місяці тому +1

@@TheRailwayDroneOh please, literally not ONE PERSON accused is being impacted by this. Creating more innocent victims doesn’t serve justice. It doesn’t do anything except destroy. Talk to former Bills punter Matt Araiza about how false accusations can destroy a life. He was at least fortunate that the accusations came within a reasonable amount of time so that he could actually defend himself. There isn’t a person on Earth that can defend themselves from a 40+ year old accusation. There can be no justice possible for either side over such a span. The only thing this accomplishes is a perceived pound of flesh for the accuser. It’s not justice and it harms many uninvolved people for today and future generations.
