My old percussion director marched cavaliers ‘01,’02, and ‘03. I’m so glad I got a taste of drum corps at a young age. He left when I was in 7th grade, so I only had him for a year but he taught us about the old days of dci and how stale it’s gotten
@@rifle2563 he's probably referring to the fact that its easy for a corp to win with innovative stuff, but that lends itself to every corp pushing its boundaries and as a whole pushing the activity as a whole. It then makes for a very different product that you get on the field and for that it makes it different to pre 2009 corps. Back then, if you wanted to be innovative, you pretty much had to play better, march better and be in tune with all members of the corp staff included to prove a point and prove an innovation and if you were a proper winner you would be awarded 1st place. Now, all you have to do is be "innovative", "try different stuff", be okay with 4th place and see what sticks without any regard for the basic fundamentals that make a drum corp show judgeable as well as enjoyable. Nobody is really competing anymore. And by that I mean, play better, march better, be in tune with all and every member.
The sound those Cadets snares made... heavenly! When the bottom heads are tuned like this it doesn't choke the snare sound so bad on the field that you can't enjoy the notes when they're in the back field. That was an awesome book. Hope to hear more of your take on other battery clips. Hack on fellas
Not sure if you'll see this, but what is the story of McNutt's cowbell? I don't really know anything about it, when and why did he both start and stop using it?
I’m not sure honestly, it could have something to do with what they are allowed to use in the lots now. I can’t remember if DCI has a restriction on metronomes and jam blocks/cowbells in lot warm ups.
I was just jazzed that they used the old style pizza cutters on the tenors for parts of the show. I have always loved the sound those make on tenors. they make them sound amazing like back when 92 SCV used them.
Always loved Cadets snare line for the beef. Auditioned twice, got owned first time, second time wasn't as bad. Always love catching DCI in Allentown. I was somewhere behind out of frame behind this. #nomorecowbell
This video is actually the second night of Allentown for the TOC show that year..... The night before, in the dark, for the actual regional was way better. Haven’t found any vids of that Saturday though....
Agreed that 13' cadets was one of if not Collins best book(in my opinion). Gotta get collin on the podcast to talk about this and his other work. It would be sick to get some more insight on his stuff kinda in the same vain as those vic firth vids from 12' through 16'.
What does not quite "blended" mean? I aggre that after the perfect cold attacks that they weren't perfectly clean on the roll. But blended makes me think that there were different interpretations of the technique for it instead of it just being a little dirty.
Cadets 2013 is the best battery maybe ever. It’s hard to say for certain, but their tonal clarity and rhythmic accuracy was next level. Their commitment to sound quality was unreal
@@NebrasKorneater I just disagree. While those are great lines, I just don’t think any of those are quite as good, personally. But we can agree to disagree
Ok cadets had some dynamic rolls but that was a bit overrated, the quads were outstanding however. The 1985 Blue Devils had a more relaxed smooth cleaner sound. If the cadets could have sustained the rolls a bit longer that would been more impressive but both drumlines took high drums in their seasons and this 2013 cadet drumline could have been the best ever but just not quite fluent enough in my opinion.

The flams was what defined this book
Cadets, my Laurd😮.
@15:33 yah I'd be getting kicked out of the bar right about now.
16:40 Colin on the drum staff for 93 Star, makes sense it would be an homage to that closer.
16:55 Case in point, that tenor part was the Star 93 bass drum part.

Who was your old director? I marched Cavies '02 '03 quads

That cowbell kept those fellas together and in time. Trust in McNutt’s tactics. 😂
Clearly it was cowbell 😂
I know McNutt works with Hannum at Umass. A lot of similarity to the ‘93 barber/Madea ending. I’m McNutt pulled a little from the master himself.
BRUH NOT THE DRUMSET HATE 😭😭
Tryna do Cadets 15? I know a guy who would love to hop on the podcast (winkwink)
That would be sick!!
Yes!! This!
Still waiting
@agedoutpodcast think we can squeeze this one in before the '24 indoor season? 🙏
I suggested this years ago. They won’t do it

This is so awesome! I love the commentary! The Cadets were on 🔥
Thanks! And yes they were lol
this is a sweet channel that i'm just now finding apparently
Glad you found us and are enjoying!
Yessss I’ve been waiting for a Cadets 13’ review.

My snare techs in '14 were in this cadets snare line. We idolized them so much.
Also, THANK YOU for saying the drum-set in the lot is annoying!

Please do Cadets 15
You guys should go back to this and try to just listen to the bassline for Cadets. The roll quality is just nuts lol
I can’t remember a year of holy bass where this wasn’t the case. It’s always insane.

You didn’t tell the McNutt cowbell story
Oh crap. I didn’t lol. I’ll throw it into a future podcast.
how about some 98 cadets, 2001 cadets and 2006 blue devils
Hopefully you guys can put Cadets 2015 in to consideration. I really love how aggressive the book was.

Do the drum tape! Also, high high compliment on the early 2000s cadets drumline comparison.
I think josh Campbell tagged Evan and I in a video that was the lot in the dark. Haven’t watched yet. Now I have to 😂
I’m here for the high roll passage in the cadets closer the reactions will undoubtedly be epic! #jesuschrist
Do Cadets '18. An insanely hard and involved book
Good suggestion. We’ll add it to the list
15:58 is the most well written quad phrase I’ve ever heard. It’s the perfect blend of virtuosity and ensemble contribution.
Mike: I just think this book in general is some of Colin’s best work.
It's pretty ceremonial, very rich, super greasy, definitely unique.
It's got gears, low/high.
Snare splits are about as melodic as a fly buzzing next to your ear.
😂
@Bryant Keegan How many accounts do you have? I saw the same stupid comment on another video. Gtfo 😂

Yea. Our goal is to eventually get all the big names on to talk with us.

Cavs Q haven't had cool arounds in so long so instead they put their quads on a lazy susan and played a spock roll while their drums got dizzy
Jesus Christ. Seconded.
Have y'all ever thought of reacting to college lines??
We actually have. Michigan state at the end of the video with Cameron halls.
Aged Out Podcast you should check out mid 2000's University of Illinois line. Super solid snare line
@@agedoutpodcast Check out NSUs battle against NC A&T -> NSU side that is
Do you guys ever check out Open Class lines? Just wondering. I feel they are generally overlooked in the DCI content sphere.
Yea we do. An open class reaction video is on our ‘future plans’ list for sure. Usually plenty of solid groups in open class.
aww man dont hate on the drumset in the lot lol. i thought that was cool
Nah we just joke about it lol

Nope. BD 96, Cavies 2000, Cadets 2004 or Phantom 2010
