I’m a young man of 23 years old. My dad has one of these in 22/20gauge and it was the first gun I ever shot. I have memories as a very little boy watching him shoot it and I would collect the brass because it was “my golden treasure”. Now I have a young boy myself and hope to take the same gun and create similar memories with him!

We really need more of these guns. We need a revival of walk about hunting, just grab a gun and hunting whatever is available. Definitely need more American made drilling guns as well. 22WMR & 20ga is my thoughts the best combination.

As a tribute to the thousands of its brethren forgotten and rusting away in damp basement closets, this great gun has earned the right to be pampered by the capable hands of Doug Turnbull. Let it rise again as a bright and ornate symbol for all grouse guns downtrodden and ill-treated, so that their loyal service and sacrifice may be remembered. Who's with me???🙌

When I was 10 years old in 1965 my mother went to the S & H Green Stamp Store and turned in 30 books of stamps to get me this 22/410 for my 10th birthday. A few months later she got another one for my younger brother. The wood stock with the blued variegated housing was a beauty to my eyes at the age of 10 and still is even with all its scratches and dings. My younger brother and I would walk the dirty country roads shooting sparrows and maybe some other stuff to boot with the 22. We was always glad to see the snow starting to fall making a fresh white pallet on the ground so that we may chase up a rabbit or two to shoot with the 410. If we missed we could always track the rabbit down by following the rabbits fresh footprints in the new pallet of white snow and or one of us would continue with the chase while the other would hunker down where we initially shot the first round and wait for the rabbit to circle back around the field to come right back to the same place we initially shot at it. The rabbit almost always circle back. Those where some memorable days in my brother and I's young lives.

This was the gun I learned to shoot with, a button select savage model 24 that was my grandpa's. When I was 14 or 16, I found one just like it with the button selector on the side at a gun show, but couldn't purchase. A few months later my Dad surprised me with it for Christmas! Still probably my favorite gun in the safe.

Great gun, I am 45 years old and I grew up with switch selector fire and it was a fantastic gun to learn how to shoot with. My father grew up with the same gun, introduced to him by his father, Red, WW2 sniper, GM employee who moved to Flint, MI after the war. Thanks for sharing, great nostalgia seeing the gun.

My father learned to shoot on his uncle's .22/410 at the old cabin as a boy. His uncle left him the cabin with everything in it when he passed on. Unfortunately, his uncle had brought the gun back to the city before he passed and my dad never received the gun in the estate. My dad talked about that gun his entire life as his favourite gun.
As an adult, I searched and searched for years for a good quality example to buy for him. Any time i found one listed, it was sold before i got there. Eventually, i settled and bought him a nice .22mag/20ga for xmas when he was 65 and he was ecstatic, maybe his favourite gift ever. However, he suddenly passed away that January without ever having a chance to fire it.
I now have it and will grab it for grouse now and then. A fine bush gun.

I've got a 22wmr over 20ga model. With a running fox stamped on one side of the receiver and a flushing grouse on the other side. My wife's grandfather had used it for slug hunting here in Minnesota. I had a gunsmith widen the choke to improved cylinder just in case anyone was tempted to do that again. Also had the side selector button repaired. It's a very fun gun. I need to do some more clay shooting with it to build up confidence to take it into the grouse woods more often.

I own a few combo guns now. My 1st one was a savage model 24 in 22wmr/20ga. My grandfather had a savage model 24 in 243/20ga. It was his all around field gun so he could hunt deer and quail in one go with one gun. My newest combo is a chiappa 22lr/20ga as a truck gun for those quail/rabbit days here in California. Thank you for covering this.

When I was about 12 my Dad and I went to a local pawnshop and he got us both long guns to start hunting with. He was a hunter years before and wanted to take me and my younger brother. I am forever grateful for that and much more. That night he got a Savage 99E in 243 and he got me an older Model 24 .22lr/.410 bore. It came with the selector switch on the side and still worked. It broke and some point and he had it converted to the hammer selector style. I still have both guns. A few years later he got my younger brother a Model 24b camper special .22lr/20ga with a place in the stock for shells that’s covered by a plate that swings over. He still has it.

I am writing a novel, where a country girl received a 410/22 over & under when she was 12 from her grandpa. I picked this gun because, when I was a kid, I lived in a small town in Kentucky and my neighbor had one. I had to laugh when you asked your listeners, "Did your neighbor have this gun, and were you jealous. My answer is YES.!
I really liked to listen to your guys talk on this gun. I have listened to several video on the 410/22. This by far the best [the "be verb" was left out of this sentence accidently, but I kept it out intentionally, as a tribute to this old 410/22].
On the other question: "change or kept the gun the same?". ABSOLUTELY keep the gun the same.

When i was 17 my neighbor gave me a model 24 with a broken stock. He knew my dad worked for Winchester and said “take it, i’m sure your old man can do something nice with it” My dad took it to work and a couple weeks later he brought it home with a new stock and forearm made from some full fancy French Walnut blanks that he had in his office left over from a 94 centennial 66 being made specifically for a gun show. He had lots of beautiful blanks he selected for various projects like shows and guns made for magazine covers/articles.I never met the man that did the work (on his own time) but wish i had..loved that gun. I gave it to a friend that was A LOT less fortunate than me. i don’t regret doing that for him, but 😅it is one gun i wish i still had.

The one everyone wants is the 22lr over 410. I have a 22wmr over 3” 20g full. I found this year that my 20 ga was the gun to have and all the 410s were put aside. My only gripe is the flimsy and improperly clocked sights on mine. My father has a .222 over 20. Excellent fox turkey and coyote gun. Now if only we can get a red dot on one.

I cleaned up and old 22/410 for a friend. The sector switch was broken. He is going to bring it back for me to take it apart and see if I can get the parts or make some. It was a beautiful gun. It showed its age. You could tell it was used a lot and loved. I believe if I remember right, it dated back to the very early 1900s. He had about 20 guns that I cleaned up for a week straight. I cleaned and cleaned. He had some very interesting ones and some that was just normal. I told him I'll do it, but if he ever sold some I mist have the first option to buy.

I always wanted a Model 24 when a kid back in the 50’s; however it took nearly 50 years for me to obtain one that was pretty much an original, but well worn. As mentioned, the side mounted barrel selector failed shortly after I got it, so it wears the updated hammer now. It has been used as a pest suppression tool continuously for 20 years by all the kids and grandkids. Even within the last week it has been pressed into service four times. In combination with CCI CB long caps, it is as quiet as a BB gun, but oh so very efficient! A very useful tool and fun.

It had just started to snow and I jumped the buck out of his bed on an east facing side hill , he was bedded under a hemlock tree and when he jumped and ran downhill I pulled up and hit him good the first shot . I bought a 22 hornet over choked 12 gauge 24F predator last year that was never shot. It’s not regulated for both barrels perfectly but pretty darn close enough. I installed some see through scope mounts so I can use the open sights for the shotgun and optic for long range with the hornet. Apparently the 22 hornet is the rarest version.

Yes, I have an original savage 24 from 1956. It is in near perfect condition. It is the 22. Caliber over 410 when these fine weapons had walnut wood, case hardened color frame and deep blue barrels. The barrels are perfectly regulated and the smaller sights do make the 410 point more like a shotgun while still allowing the 22 to be aimed effectively. Anyone who has one of these early versions generally doesn’t let them go, I know I won’t ! I got mine via an estate sale and that is about the only way to get one of the early versions. These early versions are just the best little handling and perfectly balanced combo guns anyone could have.

I currently have two of these in my possession, one is 30's-40's one is 60's-70's. They belong to my uncle, purchased by his grandfather and they are in very rough shape. Both firearms have extensive pitting on the exterior of the barrels, surprisingly the bores are clean. The older one had its stock broken and replaced with a pine 2X6 hacked vaguely into the shape of a stock and coated in about a gallon of lacquer. I have carefully removed the rust and tightened them back up, lock up is still vault like. Sentiment greatly exceeds resale in value, they are rough but ready for the next generation of critter getters.

Historical/nostalgic reason to keep many if not all of its bumps and bruises.. while ensuring (both inside and out) that it's metal as well as its wood last another 50+ years, as well as possibly making it a slightly better shooter.

I have a Stevens .22/410 that I inherited from my father, who inherited it from my grandfather. It was the first .22LR that I ever shot. It has the button selector on the side and originally had a plastic (tenite) stock and fore-grip which had cracked. I have since replaced the factory stock and fore-grip with walnut. My grandfather had also installed a small Weaver fixed-focus sight. It still shoots like a dream. I have many fond memories of shooting and hunting with it and look forward to the day when I can pass it along to one of my sons.

I'm 62 years old and my grand father had a .22/410 over and under but I can't remember who made it. It went to my uncle and then to his side of the family. They still have it. I remember as a young kid carrying it through the woods of east Texas just out side of Lufkin Tx.

I have two, a .22/20 and a .22/.410. I hunt with both of them in NE PA. Anywhere there are squirrels, there can be grouse and woodcock. So I am ready for both. I keep the barrel selector on the hammer on the lower barrel. It is far quicker to click it to the upper position when cooking the hammer. Also, if I need to take a fast shot, it is more likely I need the shotgun barrel. The 20 gauge is open choke and the .410 is modified. Bot are perfect for my hunting style.

Brings back the memories - the gun I learned on and my son learned on. A 22/20ga. Super tight choke on the 20ga, but devastating on small game. Eventually smartened up and reloaded sone spreader loads for it +1.
Super safe for a kid too.

I bought one just like it before Christmas last year (mine still has the side barrel selector switch in place). I love it although I haven't had the chance to use it much yet. Maybe find an original selector switch and hammer to return it back to it's original configuration. Otherwise, I'd say let it be old and enjoy it! Cheers!

I have one of these, 22 & 410. This was my first gun. From 6 years old and I still shoot it today. I have hunted deer, squirrels, rabbits, doves, coons, even groundhogs. It belonged to my dad at first. I learned to shoot on it. Lol, my dad was a jerk at times...he loaded the gun for me (we were shooting 22lr) he put a 410 in no warning and it knocked me over off a picnic bench 🤣 good times

My first Savage Model 24 was the .30-30 over 20 gauge. I was living in NC at the time. It was perfect for the area around Ft. Bragg for deer hunting. Never shot a deer with it. I later traded it away for something else. I now own two Model 24's - one in .22 LR over 20 gauge and one .22 Magnum over 20 gauge. The .22/.410 are a bit scarce on the market but I keep looking for one. They are great small game firearms. By the way, do send that Savage 24 in to be refinished.

One of these was my first gun. Shot oodles of squirrels with it. Stalking around, fire that .22 barrel into the nest with a CB cap, or short. Then nail them with the .410 when they ran out. Shot a lot of rabbits and quail with both the shotgun and rifle barrels. That one got away from me in the late 70's, But I acquired another several years later, older Model 22-410. Still have it, had it about 35 or so years. Has a brown swirly plastic stock on it. Patina all over but the bores are pristine.

I love my model 24 in 22LR over 20 gauge. From my experience it also does well with 20 gauge rifled slugs. At 40 yards using the unchanged sights it hits about 2 inches low. I don't feed it many slugs but it is another option for this classic gun.

I have the savage model DH-24. Has a fox and grouse engraved on the receiver. It is the 22 magnum on top and the 20 gauge on the bottom which shoots 3 in shells. The 20 gauge 3-in magnums. That was my dad and I used the crap out of it when I was a young boy and teenage years cuz we weren't allowed to start shooting a gun until we were 10 back then. I'm 58 years old now and now my son uses this gun quite often for small game!

I got a Model 24 G in the late 1970s. It was 22LS / 20 Ga over and under. It would break doen and fit in a carying case. I still have the gun and case. The butt of the stock has a plate that could slide. Open the plate, there were holes drilled in the stock to store several 22 and two 20 gauge shells. If I remember, Dad bought it at a local Feed and Seed.
I carried it and a Ruger Super Single Six with me to run a trapline in the early 80's. I can't begin to tell you how many possums, squirrels, raccoons, coyotes, quail, rabbits etc. that I dispatched with it. The metal is in very good shape, especially considering the amount and type of use it'sseen. However, the stock hav finish and swelling. The wood used wasn't great. I will refinish the stock before grandkids get to use it.
Yours, Doug Turnbull could make absolutely beautiful!

Finally got my 24 a few years back. 22over20. It is a deluxe model. Been Jonesen for one for over fifty years. Was really wanting the Campers Special but this one tapped me on the shoulder through a friend. Pre 68 with no serial number. Been out with it for grouse and snow shoes but no meat with it yet. You're right as to how easy it carries. Jealousy was my cousin Johnny coming down from East Moline with his dad's 22over410. I took him on a pond stalk for ducks with my Revalation 20. No ducks but he'd gotten my uncle John's Stetson which he decided would be a good alternate target. Silly City Boy. Gotta say the prize you have is best with honest wear and marks of previous caretakers. Good gun oil and some stock oil are all you need.

I was fortunate to have had two of them. I bought one in 1982 that had a 30-30 ovér a full choked 20 Gauge. I traded it with my father who had a .22 magnum over a full choked 20 Gauge. The newer one had the front of the barrels clamped together. The older one with the .22 magnum had the barrels welded together. It was beautiful. An engraved white metal base with a brass trigger. One side had a turkey engraved in it, and a fox on the other side. My dad in an act of horrible judgement loaned it out and it got destroyed. Meanwhile, I needed money and sold the 30-30. I bought it for $230, and sold it for $400 20 years later. There was an alignment issue with it, but that was just a simple matter of loosening the front clamp and twisting it a little back and forth until I got it right, and then reclamped it.

My ma had one. Inherited from her dad. The earlier one with the side selector button. Same calibers. We only ever shot it a little bit because we had better .22's and we're not big shotgun users. And over here .410 was scarce and expensive. Turnbull does absolutely beautiful work but I agree with Mark. The stories, while not yet translated, will be lost. I guess you'll just have to get another and send that to Doug...
