  • MAK & Owen are a couple of super talented designers who are currently living in the camper shell of a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck. They're minimalist adventurers who love the freedom that vehicle-dwelling provides, and they're in their 3rd year of life on the road.
The Tacoma is their 3rd home on wheels, preceded by a Westfalia and a Toyota Sunrader; and soon to be replaced with a truck camper that they hope will be "the one!"
We met these two amazing people around the campfire at Go-Van's El Campo meet up in Quebec City, 2018 and we couldn't get enough of their enthusiasm and their stories from the road. Definitely give them a follow to keep up with their travels across Canada and the US:

I did this exact same thing about 35 years ago. Took a year off with my girlfriend and traveled all over the USA, parts of Canada & Mexico. Traveled through all the states except Alaska, Hawaii and N. Dakota. My setup was very similar to this one. Had a Toyota 4X4 regular cab with a camper shell. We weren't working though, just tourists! It was the best year of my life, I'm now 65! This brought back so many memories. They are exactly correct about the nice people you run into at these places you visit. Was with my girlfriend 7/24/365! We actually got a long well for the whole trip. I also did this several times solo & not solo for several months previous to my year trip. If you aren't encumbered and adventurous do this!

I dont live out of truck but I vacation in it for 3 weeks in Colorado. As far as rain goes you can buy a 10 dollar tarp hook it over Yakima bars and stake it down to have a dry spot on tailgate. Also when it's cold you can drape tarp over front and rear doors then point dash heaters toward you and have a warm place to shower. I use a garden sprayer and I heat the water up on a stove. I bought a sink sprayer with a 3 foot hose then cut the other sprayer off attached the 2 together with niple and hose clamps that way I can set sprayer on ground and hold sprayer above head.

I honestly think after a number of "bored senseless" days, you start to go out and find things to do, whether it be walking, exploring a new area, finding somewhere to dine or simply somewhere nice and cosy to sit and read a book or browse the net. But then I am somewhat of a loner myself so totally happy on my own anyway.. (also single) Seems like a stress free life to me. only down side for me is, my career choice can't be done on the move so I'd still have to travel to work daily.
Actually thinking I could happily live in my RV as long as I could tow a small car behind it to get to work and back but I currently live in amongst WAYYYYYYY to many things that would probably take a couple of years to pack up and sell up if I did..

This couple is so inspirational and I respect them so much. Just as I learned from other rv'ers videos, they knew they would be forced to spend more time socializing and/or living outside among all the beauty of nature. Then, starting at 5:40, she actually repeated what I heard so many times from other rv'ers. Meanwhile, I tracked all the so called "advice" comments on a hundred other video comment sections as they so often demean the "rv lifestyle". So many commenters keep talking about "no toilet and/or shower", among other things. Last I checked, human nature thinking is proven to be more about conformity versus self teaching. But teaching that material takes way more than one paragraph. For so many people, it takes more than their entire lifetime. Notice how many wealthy people spend their time hitting a little round ball on an open field to eventually 'putt' the little round ball in a hole.....as they pay over 75 dollars to do this. Want 50 more examples? Someone should force these wealthy "geniuses" to walk the golf course versus paying to ride a cart. Just watch how they suddenly won't like their outdoors "sport" called golf. These same rich geniuses need a minimum of four bathrooms and up to 10 bathrooms in their luxury estate homes. Hmmmmm.... Who's really smarter? Who's really living life to the fullest? Who acts more 'down to earth'? Who do you want as a good friend? Fake friends come so easy. Real friends like these people have already learned to get away from the rat race. Good luck getting paired up with a twosome like this at your local expensive country club. You will be hardpressed to find rare people like this who think so highly of spending an expensive few hours hitting a ball towards a hole. Keep nitpicking at people like this all you want. You won't fool the 'real' much wiser people who know so much more than the majority of others here constantly yapping about creature comforts. That reality can't be taught in a comment section.

We started with our Toyota T-100 and a homemade camper that we lived and traveled in for two years. Currently in a small sailboat to save up and make some changes to the camper for more full time living and working as digital nomads. We definitely didn’t spend a lot on the first build and we plan to keep it cheap on the second one. The 2nd generation Tacoma’s are on our short list, but even used are not cheap. I been following these guys from the sidelines and surprised/not surprised they gave up on the sun raider so fast.
Looks like they are having a nice time for now with the Tacoma.
