As with most councils no common sense.I wonder what would happen if the council were sued for a failure of their duty of care for insisting in the reinstatement of a dangerous gateway? Hope the calf got better.
Has any council officer actually done a site visit or did they use google street view? Chances are they used Google, have you spoken with your local councillor, if he/she is any good you should be able to prove your right and get them to use their common sense...
If you can get a Planning Officer out on site nowadays to come and look at something, you will have achieved what most of the rest of the world rarely ever does nowadays. The old days when you could go in, see a Planning Officer, talk through a proposal before you submitted sadly are long gone. Pre Apps have little or no clout and are almost always done by a different Case Officer to the one who looks after the final Application. Its a very sad state of affairs
I asked for kerb to be dropped, have you been out to my property I asked planner, no I used Google maps said Mr planner. You could ask for signs saying conceled entrance ahead or just wait till there is an accident but you don't want that.
The council / highways agency are a bunch of pillocks
Send your movie to the planning officer, your local councilor and the town council
They worry more about a bit of hedge then the safety of the road sounds about right

So is there any legal reason you can’t rip up all the hedge, and that tree, no tree preservation order, does that require planning, etc.
Because that is the stupidity of the council.

Thinking bout gateway, firstly I would tell the council to do a site meeting with you and they can show evidence on problems moving gate, and they want put back, they can do it and they can take full responsibility concerning future accidents here in! Other than that I would just ignore them, they will use what ever posh words to con money out of people, jobs worth!! The lot of them.
Once again, the planners loose all sense of proportion.

Ian...regards the gate issue, as a responsible farmer you've identified a potential hazard and carried out a risk assessment. Your mitigation of moving the gate, there by reducing the risk should be noted by the council. Their Road Planning department should recognise you for your duty if care and due diligence in the matter ( would be interesting to see what the police would say in the matter). You can guarantee that in the unfortunate event of an accident, one of the findings of an investigation/ enquiry would be to re site the gate. Keep the videos coming and happy birthday to Biskit 🥳🎂🍾

Black Tee shirt! Bee's don't like dark colors or fast movements. A bee will normally "dart" at you before they sting. Fly back & forth somewhere around your face. That's how a bee barks at you. Slowly back up. You won't keep getting stung. Just saying. Cheer for across the pond.
So sorry that you are having more calf troubles. We all learn that bit more from every vet visit. My vet said a while ago that cocci can be spread by dogs and probably other creatures even if they show no symptoms. Dog walkers take note😮

Hi Ian I'm a farmer from ireland not to far from rathineska where you and the funky farmer were at the ploughing, I winter my sucklers out I have a shed where if there is problems I can bring them in, The last couple of years I have had coccidiosis in calves terrible thing only now there is a vaccination to prevent, Worth looking into, I find a calf that gets coccidiosis never thrives as well as a calf that doesn't, And can be very expensive to treat especially if spread from calf to calf, Great long video wish you would do more I'd watch your boaring life all day 😅. Thanks for sharing. 🇮🇪

Totally agree with you're logic behind the moving of the gate and just think it's going to take an death of near death to happen for the council to see sense. Would siting a large mirror opposite the old gateway give a better view further up the road, not ideal but may give you a better chance.

Hi Ian back during the war the fighter pilot Douglas Bader said ‘Rules are made for the guidance of wise men and the blind obedience of fools’ sounds like he was talking about your council staff. Try talking to a councillor sometimes they have a bit more sense especially if you can quote the number of followers you have on UA-cam 😂
You gotta love the council.. on paper it all looks ok the way they want it. But reality vs books is once again different.
On the tedding. My dad tought me to ted 1st go around at 1650 rpm in normal 540. (540 is at 2100rpm i believe) to not damage the grass too much, but still fluff it up. Then again, he really enjoyed tedding, did it more than twice as much as i do now 😅, with comparable results😅

Hi Ian, when you have time run your drone along the road both ways to get an aerial view of the gateways new and old. Plus maybe refilm the old position with a sheet of ply to resemble a tractor, plus maybe even from your car. Then God forbid if someone dies there you can show it at the inquest. I would also have a list of names of those involved in the decision. I remember the black spot signs rated by how many people died before the council took action. I'm sure councils make these rules just to make money, common sense never comes into it.
While working on the St Clair tunnel from Sarnia Ont. Canada to Port Huron Michigan. US. The safety control changed mid channel from one country to the other. The walk width changed from 4 ft. to 2 ft. when we crossed into the US, the contractor did see sense and continued laying double width boards in the US section. Luckily all other rules stayed the same.
To keep the field lines straight the old tractor driver I worked with had one fence post pained white in each field and wire gun sights on the tractor to plough the first line. No cabs in those days and a sack or two on the steel seat for comfort.

Good to start my Saturday with a long Ian video, If councils had any common sense half their planners would be redundant. Watch Ollys videos every morning just after you. Birthday Bumper has raised over £70k. Even had my Wedding on there a month ago 💒. Hope your calf recovers OK. Good news it's not Coxyi. I can only think of a solution is that when you need to go into the field that you put out "Tractors Turning Slow" signs out at around 200 yards at least on each side when you need to use the old access. It's a faff but it could save your ass from harm. I know you shouldn't need to and that drivers should only go round corners at a speed they can stop in within what they see, but I am concerned that to not put a sign out, similar to roadworks ahead, that you or the girls (if they are driving the tractors) come to harm, and no one wants to see that.
You'll probably find there is a law against putting up your own signs and the council will enforce it.
@ecc84 a permanent sign yes, but a sign that you put out each time you are going into a field and pick up when finished are not bound by those rules. It's the same as putting a sign outside for a car boot sale or fête.

Send the council a copy of the video regarding the gate and add a note that should anything happen to a motorist or you by using the old gate then they will be held fully responsible as they have now been informed that there is a problem and they are refusing to deal with it. I also have a funny feeling once this video goes up you will get a visit from the planning department with permission to leave the gate where it is ;-)

I am surprised though that their red tape terms didn't tell them how the new gate meets the 215m clear visibility distance either way from the junction/gate way. 🤔 Loving the fabulous crop of grass you managed to get this year.

Council councillors, planning committee, hiway man more concerned about hedges than flipping potholes. Farmer P, get them together with yourself your field were old gate was then say how far can you see left side ,then new gate how far you see left side.
Please send the video to your local MP, they should go out of their way to help you so close to the election result, whether they kept their seat or their new in post. If they insist you have to use the old gateway, say you will send a copy of the video to the persons family when the accident happens (not if it happens!). I'll write it for you. You have gone out of your way to make it safe, at your own expense and you have form fillers just be jobsworths. 100% commonsense from you. Keep up the good work.

Hi Ian I understand why you don’t get the politics !!! This is what is wrong in the UK and Ireland and Europe. Not one person, who actually make decisions know what they are talking about. They should remember that they work for the community. Get off your ass office people and have the respect to go out and discuss it with Ian. If anything Ian is a better custodian of the country side, than any of you office people. To add to this I once had an COUNCIL OFFICIAL tell me, that I could only turn left, when I went out a gate. I asked for an explanation. I was told that was his decision. And if I didn’t agree he would take me to court. 6 years later I am still waiting on an official reason as to why I have to cross a road to go 200 yards to turn back again. Who in gods name gave these people this much power ?!?!

Common sense is not a tactic normally used by many councils
Sounds like no one from the council has actually bothered to look and are more interested in the fact you didn't follow their check sheet. Highways will have only got 'Installation of a new gate way' written on their report, not 'moving existing gate to a safer location'.
I'd be getting your local councillor out to have a look in person, see if they agree and can put pressure onto highways to look at it from a road safety point of view.

Ian. I'm afraid to say that despite the fact that there are Planning Policies etc that they supposedly follow, there is often very little apparent logic in the way Planners act in my experience and I have to deal with them on a regular basis.

Trouble is someone in the council office knows you do UA-cam and thinks (a) you've got the money to play there games and (b) got plans for something more than the surface
