Ive tested both of these and here is my honest opinion if someone is struggling to decide. Both are good, sony is cheaper by almost double and that means that samyang should be better by double BUT it's not. In my eyes it was better by like 20%. Noise was the "worst" problem for me, but thats just something you get used to over time and if you work in open envirovment you hear other stuff as well anyways. Autofocus difference is minimal, but it's better for Samyang, is it better 150$ ? Nope, it's better maybe 50$. If someone is buying, i would rather say to go with 50mm Sony, just because you can use extra 150$ to buy maybe lights or invest into something else.
At the end, comparing the sharpness of the 85mm to the 45mm is apples and oranges. dunno why you did that. Of course, the Samyang 45 is now going for $300 on BH.
1st time i bought 55 1.8 plannar.. but it has same look as my batis 85.. Now i bought 45 samy And great small lens! Only my 3rd lens are huge Sigma 20 1.4 but has unique "medium format" look in wide picture at 1.4 in FF. So my combo for peoples 20-45-85 with R4.
The Sony had been notoriously mediocre. I just got the Rokinon 75mm and I love it. That's what made me look into this one. Looks like this will be my next purchase.
@@OmaGhomrawi I'm in love with that lens. I just wrote an amazon review. I really hadn't even seeing any reviews on it. Minor complaint is it's slightly slow to focus but not a deal breaker at all. Sharpness, colors, light weight lens etc. It was a very good purchase.
Comparing 45 1.8 vs 50 1.8, then what is talking about sharpness of fe 85 1.8 at the end. I think you should compare sy 75 1.8 vs fe 85 1.8 instead (I'm sure Samyang does better again). Sorry for your sony lense.
Great model, Oma! Just checking - was the Sony 50 f1.8 updated to Ver.3 for your testing? Did you have the lens on an A7iii or later model? Apparently the 50f1.8 is a different, much improved lens on the latest cameras and fully updated. Apparently still noisy though! I am just waiting for my copy to be delivered so I can test it out for myself on my A7c.
I believe at the time of this review, the firmware was not 3.0. However, I recently got another Sony 50mm, updated the firmware to 3.0, and compared it with Viltrox 50mm f.18. ua-cam.com/video/QK_HUXWwNj8/v-deo.html I noticed the lens has better autofocus performance with new firmware, however, it is still noisy and slow compared to other lenses.

Very useful video, I am struggling between these two lens. Can I know how you can upgrade Samyang's firmware, did you spend another 60 dollars to buy a base to upgrade the firmware? I have seen some reviews of the old firmware cannot be focused at infinity, and sometimes the focus is not accurate at close range.
I did not upgrade or bought the firmware device, however it’s the only way to upgrade the firmware. You may check a Samyang dealer near by, I’m sure they will do it for you.
This is my current dilemma 🤕 is the 50mm f1.8 with the latest firmware Oma? Either I sell off my 16-35f4 Zeiss and pick up the Samyang 18mm f2.8 + 45mm f1.8 combo or stick with 16-35mm f4 and add on the Sony 50f1.8
Hey Amirul, My 50mm firmware’s is v03, which is the latest version. It got quite improved with this version. I don’t really recommend Sony 50 for much video work. Ive been using it for a while. In still for example, one photo of 10 is slightly out of focus. Zeiss 16-35 is versatile from 16 to 24 to 35. You need a prime lens for better quality, I enjoyed the 45 since small, smooth and fast autofocus but it’s quite expensive. But had Zeiss 55mm f1.8 for a while, and definitely I prefer Samyang 45 ove Zeiss 55
Amirul Noorazmi however Tamron 17-28mm f2.8 costs $900 I got one couple days ago and gonna make a video in 3 weeks. Maybe you sell zeiss to get tamron and samyang 45
I don't do much video yet, but maybe in the future I'll think about it. The 55mm Zeiss is amazing but not within budget. And the Tamron is nice too, but sadly the Samyang 18mm f2.8 and 45mm f1.8 is just within budget. Thanks for the advice Oma! 😁🙏🏻
I have both, Samyang is much better, less haze than Sony wide open. Also autofocus is much quicker. The price is almost the same, now that Samyang/Rokinon can be had for 250. So you are wrong..

The fe 50 1.8 is rated for 20 fps with A9. Not all Sony lenses can do that, so not sure why you say slow AF, unless you mean video but you should specify, more incorrect info on the 50 is not needed.
kinachahue the 50mm autofocus is Okk but remarkably slower than samyang 45mm in videos and slightly slower in stills That’s from my real world testing :)
kinachahue The (Sel50f18) Fe 50mm f1.8 has a very Slow Af. I Know none Sony FE Lens that has a slower Af than the FE 50 1.8. The FE 50mm f1.8 couldn‘t do even 5 fps.
I did not test them side by side. I had the 55mm in the past, and this glass is sharp but overpriced in my opinion. I see the 45mm from samyang comes in between 50 and 55mm.
The Sony 50mm 1.8 AF is actually good with the A9, in fact, it can even do 20fps, so your comment is completely wrong. Did you actually update the firmware? With old firmware it was bad. You are misleading your viewers with false information. Thumbs down.
Is it an issue that there is no gap between the lens element and the mount on the Samyang? I read one reviewer saying: "The bayonet mount also felt overly tight and required more force than other lenses to mount, feeling a little "scratchy"."
Hey Dexer, Sony 50mm has a large gap because it was rebuilt from dslr lens same as sigma art lenses for sony. However I didn't experiment tight mounting with Samyang.
