18mm as a vlogging lens. 24GM vs Zeiss Batis 25mm for environment portraits? For wedding I would go 35mm 85mm combo.

The main Problem with the zeiss 55 1.8 is the clinical results it delivers. The lens is very sharp but has no soul...very boring to shoot with it. Dustin Abott said in the recent review of the Samyang 45 1.8 that it has its own character, a result between vintage and modern. I love the rendering of the Samyang that‘s why I sold my Zeiss 55. Moreover, I prefer the a set of prime like 24, 45 and 85. i don‘t like the standard 35,50,85

This lens got the perfect focal length, good price, great sharpness and an aperture that's a perfect compromise considering its cosy size. And about that focal length, ~43mm is the definition of a normal lens on a full frame camera, so in my eyes it's the perfect lens. Will be replacing my old manual focus Minolta 45mm f2 as my prime lens :)
Thanks for the review and all those good pictures!

It's my only autofocus lens, got it to replace of the Pentax FA 1.9/43 Limited when I sold the entire Pentax kit this year (£9,000 in used value).
43mm is actually the real standard focal length, not 50mm. 43mm emulates the natural field of view of human vision.
I do hand held off camera flash and this is as close to the specification I can get for the Sony Alpha bodies, both focal length, speed and weight.
The bonus is the price. Picked one up as new, used, boxed all original for £190. Got the Samyang lens dock to update the firmware then sold that for the same price I bought it for the next week.
I may consider the Samyang 1.8/24 and 1.8/75, if they come up used at a reasonable price.

The only Samyang/Rokinon lens I have is the 12mm f/2.0 APSC lens which I dearly love. I "may" get a full frame lens in the future. I have an 85mm f/1.8 and a 70-200mm f/4 G OSS that I use for my APSC cameras but, my 50mm is the OSS model only for APSC. I would probably want a standard lens for my full frame camera but, don't want to break the bank...
I am thinking of adding this lens to my glass collection.

I've just ordered a Viltrox 85mm and pre-ordered a Sony 35m f1.8, but wonder whether this Samyang would do just as well [for me] at half the price. I know it isn't a 35 but I have reviewed my photography over a long period and the most used focal lengths would be about 85, 135, 14 and around the 40 to 50 equivalent [using a zoom lens in many cases]
I think I will cancel the Sony 35 for now and buy this. In the worst case it will do instead of a 50 f1.8 and it is nice and compact and lightweight.
What do others think? The new 35mm f1.8 Sony, or the 45mm f1.8 Samyang?

    • @RotoUK
      @RotoUK  5 років тому +1

Hmm it's a tough one. I think the Sony is too expensive for what it is though even a grey import so I would go samyang. They are different enough focal lengths and therefore would suit different styles so there is that to consider,

You're used to either 35, 50 or 85 and therefore need to get used to it.
But then you're saying "it's great for beginners" which totally makes no sense at all!
A "beginner" buys the Sony 50 1.8 which is cheaper than this Samyang. Or a kit zoom lens f4 - f5.6
No, this is not a "beginner's lens". It's for people who feel the Sony 55 f1.8 is too tight (and too expensive) but do want a light, compact and fast "standard" lens that performs better than the noisy Sony 50 f1.8

    • @RotoUK
      @RotoUK  4 роки тому

Nope... If a beginner asked me what lenses they should consider then the 50mm 1.8 and this 45mm would be top of the list. Both would suit a low budget and produce great results. This 45 is better than the 50 1.8 and worth considering.
On the Sony system there are no cheap lenses and I appreciate its double the price of the 50 1.8 but still a good lens for a beginner. It's a useful focal length to start with and a great introduction to prime lenses.

"A good lens for a beginner" is a patronising statement. I guarantee you, with a lens much worse than this, Chris King would take a masterpiece of a photo. Compared to a silly snapshot 99.9% of people would take with a 135mm F1.8 or, better yet - the sharpest HasselBlad or Phase One body and lens combination. Okay, that's an extreme example to illustrate the point, but, really, the 45mm F1.8's central sharpness is only slightly inferior to Sony Zeiss 55mm F1.8's.
Speaking of the 85mm F1.4, it's only marginally softer than the equivalent focal length GMaster (except in closeup range), but renders colours slightly better. Bokeh is very comparable, as well - from what I recall.
So, I do not agree with your statement on the two Samyang's occupying a beginner niche. To the contrary, they're every bit as suitable for professional work as any more expensive equivalent focal length lens. This is more the case with the 85mm F1.4 than with the 45mm F1.8, but still…

You have me misquoted here I think. Its a good lens for a beginner as it gives top notch results for a smaller budget
It also is close to a 50mm and 35mm so a bit of foot movement means you have a great all round lens. So yes, great for a beginner! Learn your camera and functions and what your lens can do.
If a beginner asked me what lens to start with it won't be the 85!
The 85 1.4 is by the way my 85 of choice and I have sold all other 85mm lenses I own. I use for all my paid work.
I have just done a long term review on it here on youtube in fact.
Hope that clears it up a bit?

@@RotoUK Thank you for the reply. We concur on the 85mm Samyang, then. :) I still beg to differ on the 45mm F1.8, but Goodness knows I might concur with you on that, as well after some time with it. Best regards.

No worries and I respect an intelligent opinion on photography! :-)
I do feel the build quality alone on the 85 1.4 and this lens is huge too.
Love the 85 for sure!! 😊

centre sharpness looks pretty good - so the AF was ok? That bokeh is fugly though...

Yeah the centre sharpness is good and AF was fine. Bokeh is so so but then again it's a cheap lens really😊

I disagree. I think the bokeh looks really nice!

Always subjective but I certainly don't think it's the worst out there. Not the best but a great lens for the money 👍

@@RotoUK True. In any case, for the price it's great and I think we can all all agree that this lens is much better than Sony's 50mm 1.8. That thing sucks big time!

@@Old_Man_Jay Better than the 50 yes but after spending some time with it the 50 1.8 isnt as bad as I thought! Not amazing but in a pinch I can make it work ;-)

Hey there, you mention that there are no chromatic aberrations whatsoever but this is not true. Even your own images show very high aberrations wide open. Both blueish and greenish. Check the images!
