    at 3:12 you said you can't comment on the chromatic aberration of the samyang 35 1.4. well I own this lens for over a year now and in my case in bright sunlight it has terrible aberration. i cannot even dream of keeping it at 1.8, let alone 1.4. fortunately, I am not taking many photos in bright lights like that, so it doesnt bother me as much. It performs well in low light. which is what I use it for. for the price, it is amazing, but don't bother if you're gonna shoot in bright lights and sunny days.

    That's the exact reason Sony will always win no matter what good camera other brands make, budget lens selection wins the market.

    • @fwfeo
      @fwfeo 2 роки тому

      Exactly! Fuji and Nikon are specially dumb not to open their lens mount protocols like Sony did!
      They make themselves niche brands and will never be able to compete with Sony and Canon! Canon is so large that doesn't have to do that and manage to compete.

      75mm would be quite interesting. I already have the Sony 85 1.8, so I’m more likely to pick up the 35mm… there’s also the 45mm 1.8 too.. they don’t make it easy

      @@Athiril I bought both the 75/1.8 and FE 85/1.8 and I'll be selling the FE 85/1.8. I enjoy the rendering and bokeh on the 75/1.8 more, plus it's size/weight are quite nice, though the FE is already small and light. The FE does seem to focus better, plus have a bit more bokeh, and I would've preferred the longer FL, all else equal.

    That's an interesting definition of "budget".... I'd say budget is something under 200$, so basically it's a 20-30$ adapter and a selection of M42 or canon/nikon old manual lenses for your taste.

  • @MarcelVolker
    @MarcelVolker 3 роки тому +9

    Agreed on the 35mm 1.8, not a lot of character but I found recently it's been my go-to lens to pair with my 70-180, it is so effortless... Never misses focus, always sharp. Perfect for street/documentary/landscape.
    And as others have mentioned the Samyang 85mm 1.4 optically amazing rendering with a very vintage feel to it (despite being tack sharp too), but the AF is a bit iffy, I wouldn't want to use it in "one chance only" situations.
    Am now saving up for the 55mm 1.8 😊.

    For those wonder, the Samyang 35mm F1.4 and 85mm f1.4 surprisingly resolve 60mp (A7Riv) really well, top tier sharpness when testing them with my camera. Good Autofocus on both (although a bit slow).
    Downfall is the light flaring.

    • @LMActionsports
      @LMActionsports 2 роки тому +4

      I have both of them on my a7riv for all my weddings I do. I love the 85mm f1.4 especially. I picked up the 85mm GM and compared it to my Samyang and for 1200$ more it was barely sharper and focused the same. I sent it back and been using my Samyangs with great results

    • @mrwashur1991
      @mrwashur1991 Рік тому +1

      Sharpness isn’t really concern. It’s ca control, bokeh quality, lens flares, ghosting, and most of all build quality. It’s better to buy a lens that will last than one that’s cheap and you’ll have to buy twice. That’s where samyang misses the mark for me. Also I need my AF to work at maximum capability. No point in buying a body and holding it back with a lens. Sharpness isn’t really a concern in todays market. Just about all lenses are sharp.

    On a day when videos are dropping for the Sigma 24mm f2, nice to have a reminder of other lenses around the Sigma $639 price. 👍 Agree on the Sony 35mm f1.8. Nothing wrong with it, outside of lack of character. 55mm f1.8 is worth it, more so if you don't pay full retail price. Sony 85mm f1.8 is a bang for buck champ.

    I picked up the Samyang 85mm f1.4 to have a nice fast lens until I could save up for the 85mm GM. I was so impressed on how it worked on my Sony a7R4 I actually found a sweet deal for a Samyang 35mm f1.4 for under $300. I use both of them for most of the wedding day. The focus quick and are really sharp. I barely have any photos that are miss focused. Maybe because I’m using the A9 and R4 but the really track and find the eyes effortlessly. I finally saved up for the 85 mm GM and I was not impressed. I compared it to the Samyang and for $1200 more it was just a hair sharper and I thought it focused the same. So I sent it back and been happy with my Samyang lenses. I hear good things about Viltox and been looking at getting the 24mm f1.8 as my next budget lens. Great video

    Bravo amazing video @juliaTrotti ! I am a Canon guy been with Canon for 10 years now but honestly I am sick of the price of their Great/pro lenses. I had a Canon 6D for 10 years, wanted an upgrade, tried a Canon R8, fantastic mind blowing camera, autofocus is a monster, but only one or 2 cheap lenses are amazing for the price the 50mm F1.8 STM but then what ??? then the RF85mm F2 IS is 1.5x the price of most equiv Sony 85mm, now the Canon RF 35mm F1.8 IS is sharp clinical but the bokeh is almost boring or dull. So I am left wondering what is better then you get the Canon RF 35mm at a whopping 1300 USD about 2x the price of any great sony Mount 35mm !!! And I am like what wait a minute why should blow up my budget or having to use almost sub standard quality lenses compared to Equiv sony mount ???
    e.g.
    #35mm Canon RF vs Sony E mount 4x price factor: Samyang 35mm F1.4 E Mount : 440 USD ! vs Canon RF 35mm F1.4 3x that 1500 USD !!!! this is madness !
    #85mm Canon RF vs Sony E mount 4x price factor: Sony 85mm F1.8 600 USD vs Canon RF f1.2 another whopping 2500 USD !!!
    #50mm Canon RF vs Sony E mount THE EXCEPTION same price ! Sony 50mm F1.8 250 USD vs Canon RF 50mm f1.8 STM 250USD (now thats a great lens for the price but the ONLY ONE in the RF range !)
    I am so torn because I love the RF cameras, and the lenses when you have them in hand, I have EF lenses, Canon Flashes, Canon flash triggers, etc. All Canon but other than than when I see the sharpness and Bokeh quality time and again with friends owning Sonys E mount cams and videos like this times and times again. I just want to go : but why Canon ? Why ? The R8 R6 etc are absolutely AMAZING cameras, and especially the R8 is extremely well priced but then if wanting to use top quality primes and even worse for their 24-70 F2.8 zoom, this is just 2x, 2.5x sometimes up to 3x the price of the equivalent range and quality lenses on the Sony mount.
    I also love the skin tones of Canon and would never want to swap to any other brand for that reason too, such natural rendering out of the box, out of those jpegs even, but really can I justify Canon's legendary skin tones for paying pretty much every time 2x or more the price for lenses, and otherwise, revert to using old EF lenses which are great but not as tack sharp and modern as the RF range.
    I am really in dismay.

    Hmm,Julia the Zeiss 55 f1.8 is definitely not a budget lens in Canada as it currently retails here for $1,249.00 CAD.

    Hello Julia. I'm a beginner and I have a Sony a6000 with lens kit. My main goal is to do full body portrait to start to do outfits photos for Instagram. Because I'm a beginner I do not want expensive lens. What would you recommend for a budget full body with good bookeh lens?
    Thanks in advance and take care ✌🏻

    the photo equipment is not equal before the dynamics, the human eye has a dynamic of 24 EV. The best current photo sensors for dynamic range are made by Sony; they are found everywhere, mainly at Sony, Nikon and Pentax. The analog-to-digital converters they use limit their theoretical maximum dynamics to 14 EV. Or 10 stops less than the eye ... it's huge!

    Great review, and I've seen it at least 3 or 4 times)). I like You recommend cheap Samyang instead of anything more expansive and make a statment that it has good autofokus. Exsamples are also very usefull. Sony lenses are optically strong and good, but there is no magic some times(.

    I was very disappointed with the sony 35mm 1.8. The rendering with that lens seemed like pictures were taken with a high powered microscope. In fact I gone back to dslrs bc Im just not a fan of these ultra sharp lenses that all mirrorless lenses show. It made me appreciate how much more character my dslr lenses had.

    Hi Julia. Just curious.
    If we have a telephoto lens set at 50mm with f/2.8 let's say, and if we have a PRIME 50mm/1.8 lens set at 50mm/2.8, would both take the SAME picture?
    Let's consider both lenses to be native Sony lenses used on a Sony a7iv or a7iii.
    What about DoF and bokeh? I'm really confused in this, can you please help?🙂
    Thanks!
