Flytraps don’t grow in the jungle they grow in bog areas of north and South Carolina
I use to collect these plants, for awhile they grew happily, then they died, couldn’t understand why. A few years later one of my 2 sons, told me why. When my sons were younger, they use to feed these plants with flies. My poor plants died from over eating. 😭
That might've been my mistake as well 😊
Oops 😬
@@SheffieldMadePlants
Watching the Venus fly trap at work is just amazing, interesting and oddly satisfying
It's almost too clever to just be a plant
Very much enjoyed this video. It reminded me that in my youth, I maintained a bog terrarium, in which I successfully raised both pitcher plants and sundews which I transplanted from remote Adirondack (NY USA) bogs. They were a constant source of fascination to me and my high school biology class, as neither students nor the teacher knew they grew in cold climates like Northern New York.
they cant die from overeating. flytraps can die from being over triggered but thats it. source, i have well over 60 species of carnivorous plants
Lol, “fungus gnat war chest.” Love it. 😂 I need a whole platoon of these plants in my office!
My son has a collection of these plants here in California. He grows them outside with the bottom part of the pot submerged in water. They die back in the winter and grow back in the spring. He grows the pitcher plant however, inside and it's taken over the entire kitchen window. Incredible plants. Keep up the good work Mr. Sheffield, I really enjoy your videos. :)
Thank you 😊
Can you please do a video on them . Always found them fascinating. But no idea how to keep them 😊
The thumbnail is epic!😂 My son and I cracked up all day lol it was the running joke!
🤣
I'm so glad you finally bought some! I can't wait to see more content on these wonderful plants!😀😀
I've got a friend who got into carnivorous plant collecting after his messy divorce. He moved away, so I've not seen him in years, but he got custody of their twins and started growing every carnivorous plant he could get his hands on. Duno how his collection is these days, but he seemed like the last guy to get into plants of any kind. Guess it helped him cope with the divorce and the custody battle. In my state you've gotta be a pretty cruddy mom to lose custody.
A crappy mum, who does not like plants.
Nice hobby to get into
S@@_evangelina__ Oh boy she was. They were living in a one room apartment, she was 19, wasn't working and just HAD to have a baby. He was doing his best to make ends meet before the twins and they weren't even 3 before he caught her cheating. He got a great job out of state, proved he could do better by them than her and won. Heck... they're probably old enough to drive by now.
Perhaps he didn't move out of state, the plants ate him?
Noooooo !not bob whyyyyyyy bob why . Say it’s no so 😂😂
🤣
My room always end up having fruit flies in it. It's the heat and humidity I think. My room is full of many tropical aquariums, tropical terrariums, small animal enclosures, then you add the many plant lights and my computer to increase the heat....ugh. Plus all the fruit and vegies for my little fellas, flies probably think my room is a resort for em. I do my best to remove them but they always seem to come back. Maybe it's time for some of these buggers
The perfect storm
Such a fascinating & fun video, I really enjoyed it!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Fascinating! Love this video. Thank you for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it!
The snail being completely unfazed while the trap just shut on it is such a mood
Lol @ nightmares for a week! For real! They were selling these at Walmart for awhile
This morning I saw a fungus gnat getting soooo drunk from my Venus fly trap’s nectar. The gnat was so drunk he couldn’t even fly and started to have trouble walking. It was too small to trigger one of the hairs on the fly trap so I moved it over to my sarracenia plant and he fell right in.
Who needs tv 😁
My husband came home with a couple of small pots of tiny sun pitchers and Venus flytraps last autumn. I forgot them around Christmas and they dried out. The Venus flytraps look OK, but the sun pitchers look dead. I’m trying to keep them moist and see if they come back in warm weather.
Fingers crossed 🤞
Fly high Bob 🕊️
I have a sundew! They're absolutely adorable and very easy to take care of. I put it in a small saucer by the window and give it distilled water until it leaks about 1 cm into the tray, and I leave it as is. What's great is that the food doesn't have to be alive, so I can smack a fly and bring it over directly if I want. If there aren't any bugs available I give it fish food (freezedried bloodworms). I'm really hoping you get one too!!!
That's a great idea!
While not something that will get much of a feed in my house, I recently got a Sarracenia Psittacina and found a great video by California Carnivores recently explaining its origin in bogs and how it normally eats tadpoles and small fish
Thank you for amazing content. It's always a pleasure to see your videos😊
Thanks for watching 😁
Been growing these for years and i've had alot of fun. Started with entirely a carnivorous plants collection and it slowly started to expand to indoor collections. I have around 23 carnivorous plants ranging from nepenthes, vft, sarracenia, pings, heliamphora. Had a couple of droseras but they died to mealy bugs and or aphids which is a shame. Will buy some again in the future. Planning on repotting my whole carnivorous collection soon. It will be fun repotting them as I havent done so in years. Great video! Looking forward to see more about your carnivorous plants.
Thanks!
I love these plants ❤ My faves are the tropical pings. They're easy to propagate by leaf pullings and bloom quite a bit. Even the flowers are a bit sticky and have caught bugs for me! I love it when moss coats the top of the medium they're on - it's so magical looking. As soon as it warms up in my area I'll order more :)
I’ve noticed the flower spike is sticky too
Venus flytrap populations are dying out in the wild, so be careful where you buy one to be sure it hasn’t been poached. They don’t grow in the jungle, they are native to North Carolina. They are fun plants to watch but difficult to keep alive through dormancy.
Always been fascinated by carnivorous plants. Wowww!!! Thanks for this great post. 👍🏽 A far cry from our usual house plants.😂😂😂
Glad you enjoyed it!
Disgustingly interesting, lol. Enjoyed this one
Highly recommended pinguicula for fungus gnat control. Easy to get lots of them via leaf cuttings and pretty violet like flowers too. Alas, I no longer have any carnivorous plants.
I always wonder if having those around my house plants would help with pests!
sounds like they might be quite sensitive towards some pests
i've heard some good things about pinguicula vs gnats. my sticky traps seem better though but they have been around for twice as long.
some might be more suited for crawler or flying insects, but only eat a few. it also sounds like it can be quite tricky to keep those plants alive.
might be interesting trying it though, they look pretty unique
Interesting, lots of facts i never knew 😊
i bought 2 and the vedio came on time 👍🏾
I’ve always liked Venus fly traps, but the pitcher plant fascinates me. 😮
Such weird things aren’t they
bought a pinguicula after halloween, seem to be doing well even though it's winter.
it looks a little like echeverias and i like those as well, i also managed to propagate 2 leaves
feel like it has a faint marzipan like smell to it
Didn’t know you could prop by leaf
That thumbnail😂
I would really like a video on how to avoid dying new growth on aroids. This happens to my plants every so often. Plant looking good and healthy and all of a sudden, the new growth turns black at the tip before unfurling and stops growing. The plant abandons it and tries to grow another leaf. Experienced tha the most with pothos and alocasia. No Idea where that is coming from and not much information on the web about that
Great video
Thanks!
I will be on the lookout for the Pinguicula plant at my plant store... Anything for the war on fungus gnats!!
I absolutely love carnivorous plants. I have a small collection at the moment and they are quite addictive, I'm even half considering selling my other indoor plants to get more. My current favourites are my Nepenthes Gaya and my Cephalotus Follicularis.
On another point, Mr. Scheffield, I recently came across air pots or air pruning pots and I was hoping to get your opinion on them. Have you seen them before? Do you think growing indoor plants in air pots would work?
I think that’s the nepenthes I have. I’ve not tried air pots yet but lots of folks have mentioned them
Very nice topic! I am somewhat a beginner with plants and was wondering what could be cool to build up a collection with. In addition to your list, in my research I came across the sun pitchers (Heliamphora) and trumpet pitchers (Sarracenia), which are attractive variations of the pitcher theme, and the Roridula, which goes in direction of sun dew. The fungus gnats can't satisfy their hunger, I am worried, and flies and mosquitoes I tend to keep away, so what to feed them to keep them happy? I am too afraid being caught catching cats and dogs from the neighborhood.
I believe you can give them a light feed even though many folks say you can’t
think mealworms might work.
i remember someone mentioning that they tend get over fed though.
@@smievil Do they need to be alive or are the usual chicken treats okay? Soldier fly larvae etc. What do you reckon?
@@Eddi.M. i haven't tried it, only heard about it
I've never been able to keep the pitcher plant or the venus one alive for more than a month or two...
It's been 20 years or so since I last had one, so it might be time to try again 👍🏻
Thank you for the video
I hope you all have a nice weekend
You too 👍
Try a sundew; I've had problems with Venus flytraps but my sundew has been very easy!
@@hercrabbiness Will do 👍🏻
Just wow!
Wow, I didn't know all this about these plants. I never owned any of these plants and probably not something I'm going to in the near future. It will be interesting how they get on at your place. I actually never met anyone that has any of these plants! It sounds like another experiment coming up in the near future.....can't wait!
How come you don’t fancy any?
@@SheffieldMadePlants I don't feel the attraction to any of the looks of any of these plants. I don't know why they just aren't too appealing to look at for me
Loved the little Bob story 😂
😁
I have a variety of those. They're kinda fun. Those sundews are great at catching gnats. Even if you think you don't have any, you might be surprised to find a bunch of dead gnats on them. Bwa ha ha.
What a fascinating world is this ! Well I'd feel much safer raising vegetarian plants at home instead 😅 Thank you Mr.Sheffield it's a very instructive video. P.S. R.i,P. Bob...😢
Indeed 😂
Pitcher plant is intriguing but dont think it will thrive in my arid climate of Arizona 🌵 I've had venus plants and they don't do well either ☹
Love you made a video about sundews and pingus :D 👍
Hope you enjoyed it!
@@SheffieldMadePlants very much 😄thank you!
I had a pitcher plant a long time ago but it wasn't near that big. I never see any now
Oh my goodness😢
The question I have, jokes aside, is how well do they actually work as natural pest control for you. Do they really help with mosquitoes and fungus gnats, or is that just your comedic element (if it is, no complaints, I enjoy your style).
They help a little. They won’t solve the underlying problem
@@SheffieldMadePlants That's about what I suspected, Mr. S. Thanks for confirming.
Pitcher plants refer to the temperate ones that come from northern america, uk and parts of europe, tropical pitcher plants are the same as moneky cups which come from asia, australia nd southern america
wowo is now my ting love u btw
I love my pinguicula in my kitchen - keeps all the nasty bugs feeding on my fruits away from them :)
Nightmares for weeks😂
Carnivorous plants are so unique
Hi a little off subject but I have a question about a umbrella tree..it's about 7 feet tall and I have been trying to get rid of these white bugs I'm not sure what they are but I've tried everything..would it survive if I cut it down?? Any ideas or help would be appreciated
Mealybugs? Umbrella tree will be fine with a hard prune
@SheffieldMadePlants it could be, do you know what I can use to get rid of them..I've sprayed it more than once and it's not working plus it's so big...?? I will probably cry when trimming it lol...
@@pamwright8372 dab with alcohol, insecticidal spray
Bob! No, Boooob! 😬
Hi Mr. Sheffield. I live just up the hill in Pitsmoor and have several different drosera species to keep my fungus gnats on their toes. If you want any seeds of D. binata or aliciae, or some gemmae from D. scorpioides (my favourite of all 6 species I have, but don't tell the others) let me know. Also I've got far too many Venus fly trap 'Akai Ryu' plants that I need to give away if you're interested. Oh yes, and lots of Pinguicula grandiflora outside just starting to come out of hibernation now.
But by far my favourite are my Cephalotus follicularis. I really need to give some of them away but can't bring myself to give them to people because I don't trust them enough to keep them alive. However, if you want one you're more than welcome. Clearly you care about all your plants and, being somewhere in Sheffield, you must be nearby.
Thank you for the offer! I’ll let you know if I want to expand my collection. Need to make sure I know what I’m doing first 😅
I purchased two pinguicula plants in the midst of a war against fungus gnats. Guess who was happy to catch the pesky gnats with the sticky leaves. I still treasure the pictures I took of my beautiful plants with approx 30-40 gnats being digested on their lovely leaves.! Sadly the plants did not live longer than a year, may they rest in peace, unlike the gnatties.
Would you get some more?
@@SheffieldMadePlants oh yes, the same species. They have beautiful purple-blue flowers, very pretty plants.
Why do I get the distinct feeling a Bob and a Dillon did you wrong…😅
😅
Carnivorous plants are such fascinsting plants!
I currently have nepenthes gaya and graciliflora who is currently loving life outside. Occassionally i would check the pitchers and see a bunch of dead ants inside but hey, free nitrogen for the plant 🎉
I love the nepenthes
Just never let them get a taste of human blood! 😱 Seriously though I love them all. I have 1 Nepenthes, 1 Drosera, 2 Pings, and 2 Venus Flytraps that I may have killed doing the dormancy wrong (remains to be seen if they come back ok). I’d definitely love more Nepenthes and Pings.
Fly trap dormancy has me worried
Gross Mr. Sheffield!!!
Even plants are not vegan
I watched this while eating lunch, big mistake 🤢 but weirdly, I feel like going out to buy a Nepenthes😂
😁
I'm a vegetarian but I am looking forward to meat eating plant content!
I started with sundews then got a ping, my VFTs keep dying and my monkey cups struggled to transition but think they might be getting there. You didn’t talk about sarracenia pitcher plant but they are kinda the same as monkey cups. I only have 25 carnivorous plants but no cobra lilly. Pings are my favourite as they are easy to look after
Yeah I’m thinking the same
Because you have done several videos about toxic plants do you eat a carnivore diet? I do.
I do indeed
Hahahaha 😂 I like plants as much as the next person but I will not poo in a plant or feed them small mammals, there's a reason I don't have a snake or a gecko.😂
😅
Thanks god I'm not Dylan
I love all of them. Unfortunately I don't have a south facing window, but as soon as I have a garden, I'll be planting a bog pot with them.
As for mammals in the traps: there is a German garden center that specializes in carnivorous plants. It's called Green Jaws. They also have a UA-cam channel and tested the digestion of small dead birds. Some traps didn't make it and rotted, because it was too much. It was very interesting to watch but don't try at home: the smell must have been horrifying 😂
Nice thanks!
😳😳😂
Show this to a vegan
Evil laugh ....
Finally, a way to keep small herbivores out of my vegetable garden
RIP Bob, Dylan and the hungry mosquito. 🪰🦟🪦 I wonder if the Nepenthes would be a good last-ditch effort to rid our home of that smart, solitary winter-season mouse that loves to roam around my plant area looking for dried leaves to abscond with...
You’d need a big pitcher but worth a go 😁
A few years ago, I bought a pitcher plant but it died. I don't know if it wasn't getting enough bugs or if I had bad growing conditions. Somebody told me if you don't have enough bugs, you can give it beta fish food. Is that true? 🪲
I think you can even give them fertiliser
Watched your video then bought 3 online. Been meaning to get some as fungus gnats send me mental! My 100 plus plants this is my main pest issue. I top water so to be expected I suppose. Goodbye gnats hopefully 🫰
Fingers crossed 🤞
