Ignoring This Submission is Killing Your Jiu Jitsu

- The omoplata is one of the easiest submissions to set up in jiu jitsu, but many people ignore it because they feel it is difficult to finish. This video I go through my favorite finishes and sequences from the position. It involves matrix, crab ride, transitions to other submissions and more. Also the omoplata can be set up from so many different open guards ( De La Riva, Butterfly, Collar Sleeve, Spider Guard, X Guard )

props for the cat
Jon your like a Bond Villian with the damn cat!
I know I needed to work more on looking evil while petting the cat!
Oh man I said something similar but it turns out you beat me to it 😂
I literally just screwed up one of my matches on Sunday in the open weight by shooting up a triangle instead of an omaplata because I am not super comfortable with the omoplata. I'm gonna get so much use out of this video and make sure that by the next competition I have a killer omoplata game. Between this and the huge jump in performance I've seen after adding the stuff you showed in your collar sleeve video, I have SO much to drill, but its going to really help me. Thank you man, your videos are helping this blue belt shake off the covid rust!
Really happy to hear it is making a difference for you buddy! Yeah a good Omoplata is such a powerful skill to have, hope this video helps you make the difference
I only came here to see the cat
Wow... that's A LOT of detail packed into such a short video. Gonna have to watch this 2 or 15 more times.
Great! That’s what I wanna hear!
You have a severely underrated channel. I will be going for the omoplate much more from now on!
Thanks a lot buddy doing my best to keep it growing
Love the cat, villaining out in your black gi and and all white room. GANGSTER
I’m trying to turn heel here.
@@JonThomasBJJ 😂😂
Jon "you can go that way" Thomas
Amazing stuff as always mister Thomas!
Dude you are brilliant. Love your guard game.
Great content and pace of the video. Will for sure be following. Glad I got the opportunity to meet you.
Great stuff man, lots to play with here. Thank you!
No problem buddy hope it helps your game!
Always great break down. Really appreciate your insight🔨🔨🔨
No problem hope it helps you evolve your Omoplata!
Lol. The outtakes 😂
Sweet vid. Love it man!!
Hahaha thanks buddy was fun making
Awesome transitions and details. Also, I love your cat. Thanks for sharing!
Haha thanks buddy! It’s a friends cat but she was very chill and patient
Nice instruction! Thanks.
No problem happy to help
demonic crossover
Been playing a lot of lasso lately, which led to lots of oma's, which led me to this video. Great content, can't wait to drill some of these
Very informative, a great instructional Keep up the great work!
Thanks buddy I definitely will!
Jon, no doubt you are awesome at BJJ but your BJJ teaching videos are exceptional. I love the way you breakdown and explain everything. Thank you!
Your videos are real eye openers for me. Have been watching them non stop for the last few weeks. I'm leaving the hardest ones for later like the crab ride. Trying to focus on collar sleeve, improving my overall guard strategy and experimenting a bit with the matrix.
Yeah the foundational stuff is the key bolo crab ride is awesome but you need to build off a strong double sleeve and collar sleeve
This came at the perfect moment as I'm getting hooked onto omoplatas. Saw how one instructor on a different channel uses it all the time to get into other things but he is shorter and has thicker legs then me. Seeing you do it with longer legs and these adjustments so that the opponent doesn't completely escape, give me more drive. Many thanks
No problem buddy really happy you found the video useful! Will definitely be doing more soon!
that was great, thanks. i like to play guard and im a bit lighter then my teammates so your videos have been helping me a lot
Happy to hear they have been helping buddy!
Great vid Prof Jon. As a black belt, I love your content. Excellent flows, techniques and details! 👏👏👏
Thanks so much buddy! It means a lot to know it!
This is like a little gift to me from Jon Thomas right before Masters Worlds! Thanks Jon!
Haha hope it helps you at worlds! Good luck!
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!
No problem happy to help! It’s fun for me to share the info and know how much people get out of it
Great video, loved the cat .
Cat looks awesome and so does the concept and narrative
Great video! Often go to omoplata from collar sleeve but don’t always end in a great position. It would be great to see a video on responses to the step over defence (late stage), as well as how to avoid it
Good stuff!
Thanks Linus! Hope all is good back in Sweden!
Such a great video
Thanks buddy!
Good stuff thanks!
No problem happy to help!
Amazing video, thank you so much. I do not play omoplata as, like you said, I don't have a good system on what to do once the arm is captured (omoplata or other submissions). Pretty sure this video will change this :)
Jon This Awesome! Thanks for the details. Look forward to seeing you at Profectus, I have a lot of questions for you.
Looking forward to being there too
I love your videos man
Thanks a lot buddy I really appreciate it!
Nice video! the omoplata during training is always one of My favourites, but i am never able to hit it. it always seems to.me that there are much better things to do from this positions. But maybe it is just the Best second option if something goes wrong with the armbar or triangle !!! I love the cat haha
it has to have been one of the most common submissions at the lighter weight classes since 2012? Viewing it as a position like the back or mount rather than a submission really opened it up for me.
For sure there is so many transitions from it, it’s more of a position than just a submission. Plus it’s so easy to get to.
Good stuff 🤙
Thanks buddy
@@JonThomasBJJ no thank you 🙏🤙
Very nice! I have a new favorite channel. I love what you’re doing and how you break it all down! I’m trying to learn all I can to help my grandkids. I was talking to my son today about getting them started in BJJ. Keep up the good work.
If you don’t mind me asking how long have you been doing this?
🙏 thank you
great vid
Thanks a lot buddy
Very nice video
Thanks a lot!
Damn this video is dense, I'm going to have to watch it a few times that's for sure.
Damn good lesson
I feel like I’m getting repetitive here, but awesome content Jon! I’m going to give the detail of gripping the outside of the knee a try to break down the opponents posture
Yeah the blocking knee and shrimping out method is great for breaking them down.
Very good video.
At 4:44 I feel like a better armbar is turning the other way. Still holding the lapel for control.
Yeah there is multiple options for sure
Can we see the technique the cat used to escape? Thank you for the amazing content 🙏
Hahaha should have filmed it
I think it was a gatoplata... Or maybe a nekogatame.
As a newish white belt I’m nowhere near this level but still a great instructional! Keeping for later! 🙏
Thanks buddy hope you find it useful when it’s more relevant for you
Being the lightest white belt on my gym (not counting the women), your videos are amazing. Thanks for the help.
No problem buddy really happy to hear the videos are making a difference
Your videos are always sharp.
Any bottom half material?
Omo Plata's will always impress at your MMA mixer party or other get togethers.. good call Jon
Hahaha absolutely!
Upvoted for the cat.
Hahaha thanks buddy me and the cat appreciate it!
After 3 years I finally nailed an Omoplata a few weeks ago, I just found this and am even more inspired to play with it some more, tonight....
Happy to hear it buddy, hope this helps you get the position working even better for you.
Welcome to Halifax John!!!
Hahaha excited to be there soon buddy
Is that Ryan??? Eyyyy I trained with him at CPAMMA back in state college. Lmao so weird just randomly seeing him in a UA-cam video like this 😂
Beautiful cot
Yeah she is the best!
Not a technique related question but what camera have you been using for the pictures on your story? They look amazing!
Hey buddy it’s a Sony A7
As a blue belt, I didn’t realize how much more options were open from here.
Yeah Omoplata is such a versatile position, you can do so much from there.
Lol, as a while belt... WUT? Love your videos BTW. =)
Hahaha thanks buddy! Happy you enjoy them
What a cute black cat!❤️🖤
Yeah she is the cutest.
that cat is so chill lmao
Haha yeah she was the best
That’s some Great Gatsby shit!
Ahahaha
jon what about when they try turning but not to mount. when they try to go to side control on the other side. my omoplata is my favorite attack and i learned it from you. the only defense that works is the turning in one
i love the modified x position when they turn the knee out. i love to attack with that butterfly ashi footlock you teach from spider. alot of my guard game is from you and i appreciate it
Could you do some no gi videos? I play playing collar sleeve guard in gi but I'm not sure what's similar to that in no gi.
Your cat tax is well received.
Ahahah happy it as been accepted
Liked for the cat before even watching the video that's whatsup
That cat is amazing 😍🐈⬛
Haha yeah he was pretty chill. Hope all is well for you Henri
@@JonThomasBJJ cats are great. Same to you brother! ❤
Fluffy boi escape next please
So can you shoot for this when they go for standing split in full guard?
I really hope holding the/a cat is a new feature. Almost like a Bond villain.
Totally dig this information! What’s your cats name if you don’t mind me asking? I used to have a cat and it was destructive as hell!!
It’s not my cat it’s a friends, but her name is Gracie
Black cat zen power
Is there a practical way to get the Tarikaplata from cross sleeve guard? Also, will you be eventually delving deeper into cross sleeve guard via instructional video?
Not sure about a direct way from cross sleeve to Tarikoplata but I hit it from vice a bit when they defend triangle. I will definitely do instructionals on cross sleeve in the future!
Ah yes. The Catoplata
Hahaha the new submission
I like that cat
Beautiful Kitty
Yeah went so well with the white background
Black cat ,white mats 😁I am in
😻
Lunie the cat loves the channel and so do I! You've really helped us through uncertain times and I've learned a lot which I'm now applying to the mat as a blue belt. Thanks again, we wish you all the best! 😄😼❤️🥋🙇🏼🐈⬛
PS lunie cat is a black belt of course.
whats up jon? greeting from PA. are you at brinkmans in mississippi? you still doing virtual privates? i need some work! -scott
Hey buddy yeah I was at Ryan’s gym! Not making it to PA this trip unfortunately hopefully next one I have space for some online coaching shoot me a message on IG
@@JonThomasBJJ awesome! talk soon!
50/50 cat… aka the Schrodinger cat.
Man this vid did well quickly… cat = good for the algorithm.
Cats are the new algorithm hack
Ignoring the omoplata is killing your jiu-jitsu gains 😂
Haha that and more steroids
One of the big ...fu- Loool
You have a beautiful cat 🐈⬛ i own a black cat too. Osss
It’s my friends cat but she is really pretty!
catoplata!
Haha yup
Jon "Jeff Cavalier" Thomas😅😆
Hahaha
ik this is a gi channel and i hate to be that guy but would you recommend omoplata for no gi too?
Yeah absolutely, even through the classic finish is harder you can turn it into and arm bar pretty easy like Miley did with geo Martinez also you can transition to leg locks real easy if they posture out.
Bro the cat! hahahahahahhahahaha
He was very patient with me lol
Kitty!
She’s the best!
Cat!!!
Also awesome info
It’s all about the cats
Oh my goodness - the kitty!!! 🥰
She’s the best!
@@JonThomasBJJ What is her name?
@@rook4067 he mentioned it in another comment: her name is Gracie
I trust you so much more because I saw a cat
Cats = Trust
How very Athlean X of you lol
Lol did he do this?
@@JonThomasBJJ lol no but his videos are always "Doing the bench press is killing your gains" "Ignoring this exercise is killing your gains" etc
This is getting weird. Every time I commit myself to improving a specific area, positon or technique in my game, you put up a video on it a week later.
Hahaha wait until next week
@@JonThomasBJJ I don't know if i should be excited or concerned lmao.
