Owned a number of s2000s for over a decade. Driven the 997 GT3 and 981 GT4. Did my first track day in the S2k, and learned how to work on my car in a S2K. That S2000 was my Japanese teacher. Some of us were lucky enough to build a lifetime bond with the S2000. S2000 for life! Other cars get added to the stable but the s2000 has a permanent place. I even did a buyer's guide of the s2000 in my UA-cam channel. Thank you Shigeru Uegara, the father of the S2000!

Bought my 2001 AP1 used 12 years ago and despite putting another 65,000 miles on it, it is now worth much more than I originally paid for it. It's like getting paid to drive a free car, if you stop to think about it. Also, it is incredibly reliable unlike many cars and hitting the 9000 redline is always spine tingling as the VTech kicks in. It's a car with timeless beauty and is a real head turner. People are drawn to the S2K and will often come up to chat just to look at the car closeup. One guy literally ran out of a restaurant when I parked and shouted "A S2000! My dream car. Someday I'll get one, someday." I replied that I really hope that he could get one day and that they were awesome cars. I'm 75 now but will continue to drive mine until I am physically unable or am in a box after they pry my cold, dead fingers off of the steering wheel. To say I love this car is an understatement. If you have one, never let it go.

I am fortunate to still have a S2000, but I have owned and sold other vehicles special to me that would now be very challenging to replace. I've also lost people in my life that meant far more to me than any vehicle, keeping things in perspective. Getting into a house doesn't make for exciting video content like a S2000 does, yet it does count for a lot. Take it from an old guy, there is a bigger picture but the irony is that it doesn't usually come into focus until much later in life. Nothing is forever and change is inevitable. You might even end up with another S2K. As it is, you've had many automotive experiences that very few who follow will ever come to know.

If money were no object for me, I would buy a Singer Porsche, but an Ap1 in my opinion is a similar experience as compared to most the cars today with traction control, turbos that practically drive themselves. The f20 engine is LEGENDARY regardless of price. He just did an overhaul, ohlin coilovers, brand new tires/rims for track, roll cage, titanium exhaust, racing seats, tune, fluid changes, and was about to sign up for Grid Life. But ended up selling it to me for 17,000 with 80,000 miles. I will never sell this car. Such a fun car to drive and I will never turbo it. Plenty of power for me. I do have an R33 GTR tuned to 500hp, so I still get my turbo fix there.

I sold my black s2000 in 2020. I regrated it foreverrrr! Even had dreams about having it on multiple occasions. I missed putting that top down, the feel of the car and the overall experience of it for 4 years. I went on unpaid medical leave due to having a chronic medical problem and I thought to myself what better time to keep my mind occupied and have some fun then working on and driving an s2000 again. I got one this year in January and boy was it one of the best decisions I ever made. Never selling it ever. I hope you get one back mate, even if you have to pay a premium. @@phillpana It is the better all around car for sure. More spacious, more comfortable, easier to get in and out of, higher limits, more compliant and composed, more capable, more powerful, amazing engine and intake noise. It's a perfect all around everyday car that is at home in traffic, on the freeway, and hitting up your favorite back road. It is enjoyable at all speeds. Downside is its just fast enough that you can't wind out more than 2 gears without going way too fast, with the higher limits I find I need to be going 10-15mph faster around a corner than i would in the S2000 for it to start getting exciting.
The S2K is the more raw, direct, pure experience. Inputs are more direct and instantaneous, and it feels like your going really fast at posted speed limits. It's an easier car to near the limits of on the street vs the Cayman. The S2k feels more alive and engaging and you feel everything through the chassis.

Stock the car was a bit of a let down after coming from a highly modded example, I sold it to buy another dream car (a Ferrari 360 manual) only to think soon after I needed another s2000 again. So I got my third and said I’d never sell it. Sold it as the values doubled and I felt it was over hyped the price. Still I have had over 10 years with an s2000 and 130k kms driven. Can’t take those memories away. Still I look for a decent red one like my first ap1 but at the price point now it’s hard to justify. I've driven my mom's NA Miata, my dad had several different mustangs I drove, I have owned a MK5 Golf, a BRZ, an IS300, a 240SX, and currently also own a MK3 Focus RS and none of them have felt as pure fun as the S2000. In the time since I bought mine they have gone way up in price (I saw one in worse shape than mine with a hole in the block go for $15k recently.) @@phillpana same! Yes I think those early DBW throttles were just not quite as responsive - that 'safer' car I bought in 2015 for my daily is an 08 Element and even that I notice throttle response just feels a little laggy like the DBW AP2's I've test driven (before picking up this keeper '03 AP1 I test drove an 04 and 07 to see if I wanted to go AP2). The 04 was fine but the 07 seemed to be just a tiny big laggy like my Element, compared to a cable throttle. I've driven newer Hondas since then that don't feel laggy at all but I'm sure the technology is better now than it was 15 years ago.

I feel like the perfect 4runner would be a 4wd, Limited trim 3rd generation on 265/75/r17 tires on wheels with a slight negative offset, 2 to 2.5 inch lift all round and levelled, the offroading goodies you need, and a 1uz swap.

Funnily enough own both an s2000 and a 997 GT3 and the driving experience/rawness is very similar. Obviously the GT3 is on another level in terms of performance and quality but in some ways the s2000 is more enjoyable to drive (especially on track) because it’s less expensive to repair/fix. Recently drove a friends K swapped (k24 supercharged) s3 Elise and that was pretty mega.
For the money an s2k is hard to beat, but in regards to whether it’s ‘better’ than a GT3 - the F20 as wonderful as it is does not compare to a howling mezger even if it’s cut short 600rpm earlier. This was the exact same reason I discounted a GT4, the engine just isn’t special enough.
Thanks for the vid, it confirms the Honda needs to stay. One negative note, it’s a shame the s2k came with electric steering, it’s the one missing piece of the puzzle

I have had a a bit of hardship while owning this car and let me tell you, it is already 20 years since I owned this car and still never sold it. Single with roommates, getting my own apartment, getting married, purchasing a home, etc this car still stayed with me. I never even put it up on the market. TBH, I just hate the process of selling a car, this is the main reason why I never sold it. The second reason, since this is a weekend car, I don't drive it as much. So why even own it? But once I do start driving it, it reminds me why I love it lol. I have no plans on selling, meaning I will not go out of my way to find a buyer but what I would do is entertain is someone offering. Own my AP2 for 15 years and for a while I thought it was incomparable. I came across a gen1 Cayman base (boxter basically identical in this era) recently, and actually I think that car is comparable in many ways stock v stock. They both are in the same price range, both have that perfect mid balance, similar weight, and both are relatively reliable (non S 987.1 is reliable as modern Porsche get). They trade blows with totally different philosophies. I think the Cayman would still win in a straight line or on the track even though it has less power, no LSD and McPherson suspension. It's genetics and finesse really do help it that much lol

I've never driven an s2000 but I understand that sometimes a car can really get under your skin. I've got 4 cars at the moment... EK9,DC2,DC5 and an Evo 5. All provide me with different experiences and feelings, all of them feel special enough to me to warrant keeping them and I fully intend on adding a few more to the collection in years to come, likely an s2000.
New cars are great and I can appreciate them for what they are, but if you've driven any older vehicle with a splash of character, then you're fucked, because you really start to realise how depressing the future is.
It's been discussed to death, but really who gives a fuck about BHP, Nurburgring lap times, 0-60 when the cars are as dull as dishwater.
Having a car that you can jump in and take out for a drive on a sunny day, that makes you feel good is priceless. The age of owning cars as pleasure items is coming to an end in my opinion, look at the hot hatch market falling on its arse.
I needed this video as a reminder that I'll never be able to replace the ones that I have currently with something similar if I was to sell them and I do hope you yourself get a chance to jump back into an s2000.
    Great video and discussion points!

Never had any of the problems you described and still has original brakes & clutch at 90,000 miles. I have a lot of fun with it but know how to treat and maintain a car, being a mechanical engineer.
The reason I would sell it? Basically, I've aged faster than the car. Driving for more than an hour in a car is less appealing now and sometimes downright painful. I realize this will be my last stick shift car, maybe last ICE. I continue to cherish every moment.

This was right before the pandemic thinking one day I’ll buy another. Now in 2023 they are between 20k to 40k ridiculous. Guess I’ll never own another one without feeling robbed. Yes never sell your s2000 😭. The guy that bought it lives about three miles from me too 🤦🏻‍♂️

Hopefully you may hold on a bit longer. Grass is always greener I find.

2002 one prior owner AP1 under 69K miles. Bought for $14K USD in 2012 and it has appreciated at least 80%. Bought it with 55K miles and haven't put many miles on it after the first 3 years of ownership. It is a special car and the AP2 isn't a real s2000 although it is a refinement over my Ap1, but I wanted what Honda engineers envisioned and not some watered down compromise for the US market. Sorry, but that is a fact. KEEP YOUR s2000.

At that price it seems like a steal. But who knew a car price bubble would emerge. You clearly made some good decisions !

I do wish that Honda would have named the AP2 the S2200, matching the approach they took with the S360, S500, S600, S800, and the S2000. Ironically, Japan was the only other market than North America to eventually replace the AP1/F20C version of the S2000 with the AP2/F22C1 model.
