Lovely! Thank you for sharing this🙏🏾
Thank you for the flip through, please do more of these. Beautiful demo.
I definitely have quite a few art books, so will try and remember to show more!
I love your pen and wash, Helen. It has a fresh and clean look. Thanks for sharing! ❤
Thanks to John Harrison for his style!
Love #johnharrison work and your sketch looks amazing! 😮
Thanks!
It turned out so beautifully! The book looks good.
Thanks!
Every artist has their own style and preferences, there is no right or wrong. Personally I enjoy your light, loose style and I don't find it to be too detailed; your pieces have a nice cheery feeling to them that I find quite attractive.
Thanks ever so much! I just think it will be helpful to me to learn how to simplify more easily. It was fun and relaxing to switch off and copy, if nothing else!
Lovely painting Helen!
Thanks!
Love watching you paint. Thanks for the look through the book. I have ordered it as a result of the peek inside. I think it will be helpful to me.
Thanks! Hope you enjoy it!
Thank you for another great video! I'm adding this book to my wishlist right now ❤
I'm glad you liked it!
I like John Harrison’s style. I first came across him on Channel 4’s “Watercolour Challenge” some years ago. Your copy of the work is a wonderfully accomplished piece: you do seem to be able to master all styles.
I used to love watching that programme!! I only came across him fairly recently on Instagram, and love his clean style. That's very kind - thank you!
Great painting you’ve done there 👍🏼.
Thank you!
Thank you for the flip through. I really enjoy his work. Looks like this might need to come to live at my house lol. Your painting is fabulous....well done.
Thanks!!
Great choice using super granulation paint for the sky….Love your work. Have to get this book suggestion too. Thanks 😊
Thanks so much!
Yes I love John Harrison’s style too. Lovely painting!
Thanks!
Looks like such a fun study! I wish I could go in confidently with “ink first” and hope for the best, I rely on my eraser too much 😂.
You’re so expert at your sketching to begin with Helen! Loved watching 🐨👍
Thanks ever so much!
3:45 Wow! Your drawing skills a very good! 4:17 That alone looks like a good painting/design/illustration 😊.
Thanks!
Beautiful! I envy your ability to freehand draw such straight lines I really admire his style too and have this book in my wishlist. You have thoughtful in-laws! Thanks for another enjoyable video.
Thanks so much!
Just come across your video. I have to say I really enjoyed watching along and learning. You make it look so easy, which I know it isnt! 😂 Thank you for sharing. ❤
Thanks ever so much!
Hi, after watching your video with John Harrison book, found his utube (very funny), then saw Jason Skills’ video, & have tried his varying “ tree” styles, Thanks for introducing me to 2 interesting artists! Even if one was accidental.
That's great!
this looks so gorgeous, please stop tempting me with more art books ☺☺
Haha, sorry!
oh, dear Helen, it makes me so happy that you like John Harrison, too! thank you for showing the book (in germany the english version of the book will be avaiable in oktober 2024. that's weird.) i love Harrison's work for all the reasons you mentioned, and yes, my number one reason is how he is able to create glistening light by adding the darkest shadows to the whitest buildings. it's the teaching of light and dark values incarnate.
i bought something from his etsy shop and he was the kindest person.
thank you so much for sharing and the beautiful recreation at the end. you are - in your quest for change and progress - truly an inspiration!
Thanks so much! Lovely to see so many people enjoying his work!
I love your painting! It turned out beautifully! That haze blue worked so well for the sky. I don’t have that color but I wonder if I can try to mix it myself? This looks like a wonderful book. It isn’t available on the U.S. Amazon site but I will order it through the UK Amazon link you provided. Thank you so much, Helen!
Thanks! I just had a quick play, and I managed to make quite a close approximation of the Haze Blue, with Schmincke French Ultramarine (I used that one because it's my most heavily granulating Ultramarine), Roman Szmal's Transparent Gold Ochre (my only PY43) and a tiny bit of Daniel Smith Burnt Umber (you could play around with different PBr7's)
That's very kind of you to use my link, thanks!
@@helencryerthanks so much!I have those paints on hand so I’ll give it a try! 😊
When I saw the video on making your palette in the Derwent pencil tin, I had to laugh because I did the exact same thing! Unfortunately, this was too awkward for the amount of desk space I have. I did finally find my "holy grail" palette tho. Several years back the French toy company Vilac sold some huge (9" x 12", 22cm x 30cm) tin watercolor paint sets for children, with lid illustrations by Nathalie Lete. The one with the deer painting (Mon coeur fait boum boum) even has 9 wells impressed into the top for paint mixing. I used appliance spray to paint the uncoated tin white. Right now I have 150+ whole and half pans in there, with room for at least 16 more. I simply adore it.
Ha! That's great! Yes - they're quite big - I'm OK on my dining table though.
What a lovely book….another one for the list! The part where I mess things up…..trying to add the shadow! More practice needed 😅
It's definitely easier when I'm copying!!
Absolutely beautiful once again ❤
Thank you!!
What a beautiful painting. You really did his work justice. X
Thanks!
Thank you for flicking through the book, I'd added it to my basket before you even finished flicking through because it looks exactly like what I'm looking for. And adding that granulating blue onto my wishlist for a future treat, it made such a gorgeous sky, proper British "It's gonna drizzle" looking sky.
Thanks!
After the video, I had a go at making a mix of the Haze Blue, with Schmincke French Ultramarine, Transparent Yellow Ochre and a PBr7, and it worked really well.
I remember you watching one of Toby's video and not liking the bleeding of colours and splashing. Can't say I do either, they look like major accidents. This is very neat and unlike your normal work, very good though. Finding your own style is like Glen Miller trying to find that sound that made him famous. It will happen one day, even for me. 🤔
I think I actually didn't mind the splashes! I know I've done them since!
This isn't likely to become my style, but there're definitely things to learn by trying out different techniques.
I rather like the style you have but I can understand wanting to simplify your work. I thought I'd test out my watercolor pencils in small 5x3.5 cm rectangles (8 to an A5 page) I thought I could do little very basic landscapes in them. I used the Pleinairpril random generator for reference images. The first one that popped up was an island in the fog with a dock and a small boat in the foreground. I'd promised myself that I would do any landscape that came up, no cheating for easier ones lol. My bad. I had no idea you could fit so much detail into such a small space 😂 Anyway it looks like a great book. I've added it to my growing wish list of art books. There are a couple of Terry Harrisons books already in my list. Maybe I could paint better if I changed my surname to Harrison 😛 I did learn my lesson from moving to this house in 2014, and lugging box after box after box of books upstairs though. I had purged a lot before we moved but wow a lot more went to local bookfairs in the years since. Now I mostly buy kindle or ebooks and only buy the physical book if it's one I return to again and again. I quite enjoy reading magazines and art books on my ipad. Fiction lives in my kindle. The library is also my second home.
I believe you about fitting lots of detail in a small space!
Funnily enough, we had to come up with a new surname for ourselves for something once, and I picked Helen Harrison! 😂
I know what you mean about books - we got rid of so many when we moved. It's mainly just art books I buy now, and I listen to a lot of audio books.
I came across his channel a while ago. I do recommend people to stop by and check it out.
I haven't actually seen it - thanks for the recommendation!
I've added links now in the description box.
Welcome!
1:36 Nice painting!
Why is this the “new” book ?
Because it has fairly recently been released by John Harrison, and it's new to me also.
First! 🥱 💤
Sorry my videos are boring you again!
I’m 🥱 getting sleepy 🥱
@@helencryer😂😂😂. Never say that!
Sweet dreams!
@@helencryer Thanks! I’m actually reading your replies today as I’m getting ready for bed 😂.
